How to actually update DesireHD to 4.0 - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry Folks, I'm new to this site/forum, I would like to upgrade my HTC Desire HD to the 4.0 update, which I read/watched is working well. My problem is I'm fairly handy with my phone and somewhat with computers. But I don't see/understand how to actually go about that. I thought I saw somewhere, that I am to factory reset my phone, I can handle that, but I guess what I don't understand, is how I actually get the update ONTO the phone. Do I just go this website and clink on a link from my phone and it will take over? If so, which one, I see links all over the place. Should I remove my memory card? I'm assuming this site is for really phone, computer savy people. I just want to try the update. Would be happy to donate to the site, once I get it going. Can someone please help me. Thanks for everyone's time of reading this. Sorry for my ignorance.
Cheers.

Before screwing your phone read this guide carefully Post #7 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1824379)
There are also lots of interesting stuff in there so read, read and read.

Hi, its a little more complicated than you suggest in your post.
First you will need to disable the security on your device (known as s-off) and flash a custom recovery.
You need to download the rom you wish to install and save it to your sd card. See here for a list of custom roms, there is a section for Android 4.0:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1610483
Boot the phone into recovery, wipe you phone data and factory reset then install the rom.
You can use this to unlock the phone and flash clockworkmod recovery:
http://tau.shadowchild.nl/attn1/?p=74
Do loads of searching this forum and googling so you fully understand the process as there is a chance of bricking your phone if it goes wrong. If you do your homework, are methodical and computer savy as you mentioned you should be fine.
Good luck!

Thanks, But...think I'm screwed.
Thanks Guys for your help, but I think this is way beyond me. Its not that I'm lazy, but I can't see myself reading tons of posts and researching for days to do this. I'm having a hard time even finding relevant info that pertains to what I'm trying to do, links and stuff everywhere. Doesn't seem like a lot to ask for to have a step by step guide. You know what I mean ie: Step 1, Factory Reset, Step 2, download this file Step 3. Run it etc... Oh well, I will just suffer with this phone, and probably get stung getting out of my contract early and get a Samsung G3 or something. I had thought this was as easy as factory resetting my phone, downloading a thing or two and then just running it. Too bad there wasn't a store or place I could take this to, to get it done properly by people in the know. Would gladly pay to have this done.
Thanks.

Everything you need is in the link and guide glevitan gave you. But you do need to read. If you don't want to, the rooting and flashing isn't for you.

Basic's of Rooting

I was just wondering if anyone could just post the basic's of rooting, not how to do it, but everything I need to know and keep in mind, what everything means, if say something goes wrong, or need to re-flash a rom, just the basic's, I can follow directions just fine, so I don't think ill have any problems rooting.
I did the unrevoked method, just to get superuser and install a few apps, waiting to do the toast method once a good ROM comes out, and now that Fresh is out, I think it is time.
It is really pretty easy. I think setting up adb is the hardest part and it's not too bad either if you follow a guide here.
If searching xda isn't enough try youtube.
This is a bad idea.
Rooting isn't that hard, the instructions are clear. If it became any easier then everyone would do it and we would have people coming out of the woodwork asking for help for this that and the other.

Who cares if "everyone comes out of the woodwork"???? People take this far too seriously...it's a freakn' phone. If there are a ton of noob questions on here, so be it. The world will not end. If you don't like the questions, there is a button on your mouse that will help you skip past it. I thought that's what forums were designed for in the first place??

it's honestly REALLY EASY, you flash a zip, reboot, flash another zip then flash a rom and your done.
Installing the ROM on my phone wasn't what I was concerned about.... but whatever, flashing now.
How do you install unrevoked? I would like to try this method if is possible since I had my evo rooted then I unrooted and install the OTA and now I can't root it anymore.
http://unrevoked.com/m/
Go there, and then click the image, it will install itself. Make sure in the options you make it so it can download unautorized files.

[Q] Unlocking the New HTC EVO 4G

I know, I know, I know...
I am a member of a few different forums for other things and there is always a neb that comes on and asks a question that has been beat to death.
I have heard that God kills a kitten ever time someone post a thread before doing a search on what you are trying to get answered. So for my sake, God's sake and that poor kitten sake, I did read through a lot of post before I had the sack to post this question
I am posting this question because there seems to be a lot of different answers to a lot of different questions, so, I was hoping for very direct answers to these questions that I know have been asked plenty of times...
Here it goes...
I have purchased the HTE EVO w/ android 2.2 and I have had it for about 2 weeks.
I want to root my phone, which is my first ever smart phone.
This is what I would like to happen...
1) I want to be able to have the restore point so that I can flash my phone back to stock so that if something happens the warranty will still be good.
* Does this save on my home pc or sdcard? Or Both?
I have read that you need to download here not there(ruu...clockworks/rom manager)...no here not there...If you download anything but this you will not be able to get it back to the stock setting and Sprint will know you have rooted the phone...The whole thing started to get a little confusing.
I am a very simple person so I am hoping for a very simple answer, if there is one.
1) How do I root my HTC EVO that has the android 2.2?
2) How do I make sure that I can have a recovery point incase I mess it up (brick, etc...)
3) How do I make sure that I can flash my phone back to the original settings just incase I have to send it in to be fixed for some reason, which rom manager lets me do this?
4) Is it legal to do this?
5) What might be the biggest no-no to do before, during and after you root your phone?
Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this.
Visit the wiki, that should answer most of your answers.
1. Rooting voids warranty
2. Always perform a nand backup if you want to revert to your previous state.
Visit the wiki, the instructions are simple.
EDIT: Actually the wiki will answer all of your answers.

Sorry for the silly ? But what is the wiki?
It is a sticky in Android Development called Evo Wiki. You have to put effort in searching, I believe in you!

DO NOT RUN UNREVOKED OR YUO COULD PERMANENTLY CORRUPT YOUR PHONE!!!!! at the moment, there is no brainless way of doing it. you need to manually set up the adb and usb drivers, and then do some coding work, along with downloading like 1/3 gig of files.

Do I have to do a full flash and wipe my phone to get to GB? Can I unroot & try?
You need to use the search function.
But here, let me say this again. YOU CANNOT GET THE OTA UPDATE WHILE ROOTED.
You either need to revert back to STOCK and update or manually install GB yourself.. which you CAN do while Rooted.
You're probably going to ask how to do both, so I'll provide these for you as well.
If you want to update this manually while rooted, follow this link:

If you want to revert back to stock, follow this:

then follow part 2 (For Stock) in the link that was provided for manual update.
Any other questions?

Hey, I am sure a billion other people are asking this same question left and right, but do you know if any roots are available yet for the 2.3.5 gingerbread update? I am well aware that it takes a while for one to be developed. I am currently rooted with the 2.2.1 froyo and love it so I don't mind waiting for the new root. I just wasn't sure how the headway is going with it. Also, the revert back to stock link you posted, is that to unroot the phone? I'm sure all will be explained for us in due time, unrooting the 2.2.1... installing the 2.3.5... rooting to gingerbreak... yada yada yada...
But yeah, any advice would be great.
I was told be 2 Epic users & Best Buy sales rep, you can get OTA update if you are rooted. But I've also heard that you can't aswell. Hence the question.
So can you unroot without losing data?

Preeeetty sure you cannot get OTA with Root, you need to manually install or flash back to Stock. There are lots of threads about this, with the same answer. Also, Best Buy doesn't know a thiiiing. A friend of mine works there, and she's pretty damn stupid.
Well, since you're rooted.. you should probably invest in Titanium Backup. It can backup your data (contacts, messages, apps. you name it) and restore this all as well. Once you back up all of your data, revert to Stock, upgrade to the OTA, root it, then install Titanium Backup & you'll have it all back.

I Odined back to stock, ran the update.zip, Odined a recovery, flashed su and then started flashing roms to test. I save my messages with mms backup & restore, but other than that, most of the things I use save to sd. I like a really clean install so I know where my problems are coming from.

This isn't very hard to understand. You do your research, you follow directions, and you'll have success. If you decide not to do it correctly and break your phone, that is on YOU. You broke your phone simply because you did not read. That is your own stupidity.
Also, you don't check everything in ODIN. You obviously do not know what you are doing, so I suggest reading some things before attempting this again.
Both guides worked for me, without any issue. The same goes for many others as well.

Seriously? You're *****ing at this person because you failed to take the time and research these forums. I spent an entire day reading threads and watching QBKing77's videos to gather all the necessary information and files before doing anything. Also, spare me with any replies to you not having enough time to do so.
Hope you walk away from this with a new found respect for doing research.
Edit: You even posted in the "Everything EI22" thread in the General forum where I gave a typed out how-to for a clean install, or full ODIN to Froyo then the upgrade to Gingerbread. You could've simply scrolled up on page 10 to this post. (Seeing as your post created page 11 of that thread.)

No, you are in the wrong. You're out to brick as many phones that you can. Everyone in the chat told me that the thread/instruction is very old and all wrong. The picture used was wrong. Everyone told me that I did nothing wrong and that I followed everything right.
Warning to everyone, don't try his link to revert back to stock. It will immediately show a red fail in the first box, then your phone will never, ever...not now, not ever...turn back on. Then expect to shell out hundreds for a new phone.
This isn't funny. Not one bit.

You're obviously an idiot. I used the method to return to stock just last week. It's not my fault that you can't comprehend simple instructions. That is not the wrong picture, btw. ODIN looks like that.
Also, Out of oh.. I don't know, all of the people I've linked this to, you're the only one who had any issue. It's damn near obvious that you were the one who screwed up.
Do some damn research before you even post anything else.
Oh! And, if you actually used the search function you would learn how to get your phone into download mode so you can reflash stock rom.
I think this is pretty hilarious, btw.

I can do this. It just been a long time since I've messed with this.
I just realized the title of that linked thread "How to Restore a semi-brinked Epic..." and this thread is most likely not proper for those with phones being just fine and all they want is to revert back to stock. I"ve searched for the real thread on reverting back to stock, but I can't find it. Nothing stays stickied on here for long. When I get access to my comp, everything there is bookmarked.
For now, don't check all the options as it says. lol

Also, ThunderOKC. You do realize that to fix the "soft brick" on an epic means returning it to STOCK. So yes, you idiot, you can use that thread to return to stock without it having a soft brick.

Funny thing is that thread works for everyone but you. No one has cried about it semi-bricking the phone or that they can no longer afford to get the breast implants, or whatever the surgery was you claimed you couldn't get to because you had to buy a new phone. That statement alone showed your mentality and level of competence. The Red fail means your stock cable is a piece of crap and you should spend $2 of your surgery money to get a good cable. If you just red through the thread instead of running your mouth everywhere you would have seen that is common for Odin and stock cables.

Actually it is funny. Your level of incompetence shows you should not be rooting or messing with your phone. You are very rude and have no gratitude for people trying to help you. Stay out of the love connection chat rooms asking for help with your phone.
I followed the instructions exactly. In the picture AND in the instructions, say to check it all. Stupid kids, learn how to read and understand. Not my fault. Hell, even had the whole chat room support laughing at how wrong the thread was.
I fixed it on my own. Grow up, kids.
@ ThunderOKC
It's your choice to hack your phone. With that choice comes the responsibility to do proper research beforehand and make educated decisions based upon that research. Otherwise you will likely end up with a paper weight. That is the inherent risk of hacking the phone.
You've been posting all over this forum complaining, and the tone has been down right rude. Welcome to the ignore list.

I followed the instructions exactly. In the picture AND in the instructions, say to check it all. Stupid kids, learn how to read and understand. Not my fault. Hell, even had the whole chat room support laughing at how wrong the thread was.
I fixed it on my own. Grow up, kids.

Utmost help needed please.

Sorry for being noobish, just got a nexus, UK and it's on 4.0.1, been reading a lot, and very much overwhelmind, now, coming from my galaxy s2, which, I had been used to flashing and routing daily. I managed to use the toolkit, to root my phone, smashing app, will definitely donate, to the dev, as i managed to root, in pretty much 5mins. My problem is, whats the best route, to follow, in order for me to have the latest stock 4.0.4, because I have read a lot of stuff, so now muddled as to what path to take. Is it a matter, of just downloading the official rom, in the general section, and flashing it via custom recovery, sorry for the noobish questions, it's been a long day, trying to get to know the phone, am sure, if someone can help me from here, all be fine. I also tried to seek for an update, under about, but phone says am on latest firmware, which is 4.0.1,so appreciate your guidance please.

Phew cheers buddy, haven't tried this yet, as at work, will give it a short when I get home, anything easier than this please, as i just have a forbia for anything called adb please? Also, don't understand why my device is still on 4. 0. 1, been hitting the update button continously with no luck, but prepared to use other means, as suggested above, to get the device updated. Thanks again in advance.

You CAN flash factory images through the toolkit you know. You can download them at Google, put them in the correct subfolder of the GNEX toolkit folder and flash away. In order to do that you do have to have an unlocked bootloader and you will loose your root. Unlocking the bootloader will loose all your data (including under the SDCARD folder (so everything you stored will be gone)!. Rooting can be done again through the toolkit...
Or you can download a different flashable zip file that you can flash from CWM recovery.
Hmm thanks this looks more like my sort of of a thing "different flashable zip file that you can flash from CWM recovery.", were can i find this please?. Thanks.

First of all, let me say welcome to xda and hope you will not be disappointed by the people as there are many helpful folks around with some brainiacs (devs ) around.
Let me say that it can get really easy to very very complicated depending on what type of person you are lol.
Flashing custom roms is something that becomes a hobby (well at least for me) and you can choose one from various options, the one which suits YOU!
First off, you should think about giving some threads in general section a read, google around how to flash custom roms and get familiar with it as most of the methods require you a recovery setup known as ClockWorkMod (google it and read about it). Once you flash clockworkmod, you're pretty much secure from soft bricks and all those sort of problems because you can always access recovery and flash the rom again or clear cache or backup and restore which gets your phone working....
Once you're confident about ClockWorkMod and flashing roms. You should think about these steps and do them if you want to, as you mentioned "using the device to its full potential"
1. Use this tool to S-Off in order to unlock bootloader (in other words, you can flash custom roms freely).
2. Once you think you've done the steps properly, you should shutdown the device then once it's shut down properly. Hold volume down + power to access hboot and if on the top lines, it states s-off then it means you're ready for the next step.
3. This part requires you to flash clockworkmod by looking at this thread.
4. Once you're done with clockworkmod, you can access hboot again by that combination and use volume key to navigate to "recovery" then once you press power button on it, you'll be directed to Clockworkmod.
5. In clockworkmod, you can look for the downloaded zip from your sd card and flash it
Now custom roms, you have a variety to choose from. DO those steps and then you'll know more as you start moving in the direction.
Happy flashing

To put it another way....if a Taliban suicide bomber was running towards you, when your standing there with your family and you have a AK47 in your hands...to shoot or not to shoot?
LOL...anyway...hell yeah...root it dude...u won't regret it.

Thank you so much for the info.
Exactly the sort of info i was looking for. I've certainly got a lot to learn by the looks of it but such a relief knowing where to start.
Can i just say that if it wasnt for guys like you this world would be moving a hell of a lot slower.
