I was proposed an offer to trade my ET4G for a GNex. Im considering doing it. What we want to do is the nice lady that wants my phone is to use her upgrade for the GNex then when she receives the phone trade it for my ET4G (She like Touchwiz, I prefer AOSP). What Im concerned about is if Sprint will allow this exchange to happen right after she receives it. I don't want them to hit her for the full amount or anything like that. She plans on calling in ans saying she doesn't like the phone and wants to add swap the phones. Will Sprint allow this to happen right after she receives the phone? I kinda hate to leave the ET4G but LTE is lighting up soon in Chicago and where I live there is no WiMax.
Up to what I know, yes, Sprint will let you do this, they'll just make you activate it on her account, resign the 2 year agreement on her account, then you can do the swap. The only thing is, buy the phone directly from Sprint, not Simplexity or something. If you buy it from Simplexity, they'll hit her with the full price, but directly bought from Sprint is A ok.

So long as it is an upgrade and not a new customer, it's ok. She doesn't even have to make up that story. What I would advise, though, is to wait to do the trade until after the 14 day is up, simply to be safe guarded if the device is defective out of the box. Not saying that the ESN swap voids our policy, but it would just make it logistically tough in a retail store, with how it would look on our end.
Also, she'll need an inactive phone to complete the transaction. We can't just flip-flop two different accounts' ESNs simultaneously, and an account can't be left without an ESN, even temporarily. She'll need to activate another phone (not yours, since it's tied to your account, unless you activate another phone instead of her), the gnex will then be inactive and free to go on your account, and then you can put your E4GT on hers.
What this all really amounts to is that this whole transaction will be much much easier in a store than over a phone lol.

Damn, I thanked you on accident. If I may interject... You are correct up until the whole inactive phone part. Sales Rep should contact NSS and they should be able to do the flip flop over the phone... At least that is what I gather from past experience.. :highfive:
If NSS gives you a hard time simply hang up and call again until you speak to someone who knows what they are doing..

Thanks everyone! Now I need to decide if I want to leave the ET...
Well if they want an esn on the account at all times and she is using her upgrade then she would have a phone with a clean esn that you could swap your phone for then she swaps your e4gt to her account and then you swap the GNex on to yours. Yes its a lot of extra work but its an option if you have to have an active phone on both accounts

I'm leaving it for the Nexus. My sister want my E4GT and her upgrade is available next month, so she wants me to take her upgrade and give her my phone. I'm leaving sprint in December anyways, so it's not worth getting a phone like the S3 or Evo LTE. And the iPhone is a definite no anyways.

No loop hole. That ESN is locked until the delinquent account is paid.

can he call and switch his esn? without having to pay his whole balance?
Call in from a land line, I thinks its 800sprint1. Tell um you bought it off ebay and cant get your money back, cause your old phone broke they should let it slide. Make sure they dont know it was your friend. If the say no tell um they to help you with this cause you wont have anyway to use your phone. Worst case threaten to switch to verizon.
I used to work for sprint years ago its sad they seem to always forget that without our business they would be no where. Good luck!

That's not gonna work, ESN is locked to the delinquent account and the button to remove it is blanked out. Only a payment will allow you to go in and remove the ESN. Sad that people still think threatening to cancel will allow retention's to waive a magic wand and fix everything. You'll just get transferred to a supervisor to be told no again.

I'm sorry, you think its sad that Sprint locks esns for phones on delinquent accounts(like every other carrier out there)?
Can you imagine the abuse? Just go start a bunch of new accounts, buy phones and then let them go delinquent and sell the phones...how about not.
Whining and threatening you're going to switch isn't going to change an industry wide policy.
Correct. Industry wide. Verizon's policy as well. Pay the bill for him or something if you want it that bad.

You say that he is "letting his account go past due," does this mean that his phone is still active?
If his phone is still active, and not yet past due to the point that his account is shut off, then do an ESN swap before his account is shut off...then when it is shut off, the other phone will be blacklisted and not the EVO.
...
As others said, there is another way. If you don't know what it is, we won't tell you.

He's past due 160 and temporarily disconnected until its paid off. So I guess there's no way around it. I wish someone would say what the "other way" is. I thought there was a way to reprogram the number yourself through ##menus. Or is that old school?

Past due $160 or 160 days? If it is just past due $160, and its a short amount of time, maybe a small or partial payment will get the phone turned back on?
What you are speaking of with the ## menus is only a part of the "other" way.
Basically, the ## is how you manually program your phone. To manually program your phone, you need the MSL (Master Subsidy Lock)...Sprint usually calls it "a six-digit code". Lets suppose that yours is 000000 (trust me it really isn't), then you will program it with ##000000#, you can manually program data with ##DATA# (you again will need your MSL.)
That portion, we can tell you on this forum. This information will not help the situation, as your ESN is blacklisted. If and when you get Sprint to lift the blacklist on the ESN, you can manually program the phone if you desire with those ## codes. (there is no real point, unless it does not correctly provision itself.)
This forum, and many others have a prohibition on instruction people how to perform ESN Cloning. Some try to whitewash it by calling it an ESN Repair, which in most cases does not make sense. I have never seen a phone that truly needed and ESN to be repaired. Out of curiosity, have any of you phone techs out there actually seen an ESN that really needed a true repair? (By true repair, I mean, NOT to get it to work on another network?)

He could call in and swap esn to an older phone. He could say "i would like to swap esn to an older phone cause EVO is broken and i dont want the $10 add on to keep adding up." He could also put his line on seasonal suspend which will look like he's trying to at least reduce his monthly bill to hopefully pay it off. He should do that anyway. It's only $8.99/mo (or somewhere in that range, can't remember exactly).

Both of your scenarios wont work. The first wont work, because THAT evo's esn is still blacklisted until the bill is paid, it doesnt matter what phone you switch your line to. And your second, same thing, even if he puts it on suspend, when he renews it, it's still blacklisted.
I agree... ESN Swapping can be risky. and once it get blacklisted thats it to my knowledge.

Hi there, I've been wondering about this. Let me first state that I'm from the Netherlands and know nothing about Verizon or US laws on privacy or whatever. So if anything in this post may look sound weird to you guys, feel free to ask what the hell I'm trying to say.
My girlfriend has an HTC Incredible from Verizon through some Verizon family phone plan on her moms name. She went to college last year, moved out and obviously still uses her phone. She and her mom don't get along well and quite frankly, we both agree that she's a bit of a psycho. Turned out that she knows where my girlfriend has been on multiple occasions, which is weird since she lives 3 hours away from "home".
Long story short, we suspect that there's some kind of tracking functionality on the phone. I Googled for it but couldn't find anything else than what Verizon calls 'Family Locator' software. I couldn't really figure out how this works though, and if it's a separate app or that it makes use of the built-in GPS or triangulation which sends that to Verizon where her mom can then view this on a website.
Can anyone shed some light on this? Ultimately I want to prevent her mom from tracking her, she's an adult after all and it's basically none of her moms damn business where she is. I know, her mom pays the phone plan so MAYBE she's free to do whatever she likes with that. But that doesn't mean my girlfriend is not allowed to do with her phone whatever she wants.
Google Latitude?
It's not active. Besides, her mother doesn't really have the technical know-how to use stuff like that. She doesn't even own a smartphone herself.
Flash a custom rom probably will help
Sent from my SGH-T839 using XDA App
Family locator uses gps and cell towers to track phones of a family plan and only the head of the acc or someone with the heads password can turn it off does ur gf see the bills? If she doesn't she won't know what her mom is doing to watch her
Sent from my SGH-T839 using XDA App
Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. I was hoping that there was some kind of app or functionality in the phone that actually sends the collected data to Verizon so I could block that. If that would be the case it could be solved with a custom ROM, but if Verizon just collects the data straight from her phone than that's a problem.
No, she doesn't see the bills and her mom is the account owner. So we will never know if it a potential solution actually works. Besides, she's in Europe for a year so the phone wont be used till next summer (since we don't have CDMA networks here).
Its not possible to remove it then
Sent from my SGH-T839 using XDA App
So you're saying that Verizon's Family Locator just collects the information from your phone without the need of additional software?
Yeah thats how my t mobile family locator works
Sent from my SGH-T839 using XDA App
LOL! Sounds like the girlfriend just needs to leave the phone at home when she doesn't want mom to know where she has been. That or get her own phone.

What is everyones feelings on owning a Galaxy nexus for the next 2 years on Sprint?
Ditch sprint and buy a gsm gnex from the play store.

If you're out contract call account services and tell them you want to leave.. when they ask why, tell them why! you will get your Nexus in no time.
Ask for the retention or loyalty department. If they pretend to not know what you're talking about, tell them you'd like to cancel your service and you'll get transferred to them. CALMLY explain your situation and thoughts to them, and they should be able to cut you some slack.

Ahh you are on SERO... this is why. You can't expect discounted service and a free phone. I don't think Sprint cares if they lose customers that are on SERO.
Then again I might be jaded as I had to move from SERO once they released the HTC Hero a few years back. Wouldn't allow it on old SERO. I threatened to leave, escalated it to the highest tier, and was still told if I wanted android I would need to switch to a new plan. Otherwise, thanks for being a customer!
A few months later, they started allowing "premium" devices on SERO plans. I called and told them they needed to switch me back... no dice.
I've since paid the ETF and moved to a GSM prepaid Nexus, but I do understand why you need to stay.
That said, you are going to have to make tradeoffs if you want to stay on SERO.

But now back to my question. Do owners of the GNex feel they can be happy with this phone for the next 2 years, I am coming from an EVO which still has a very active Development community are things slowing down here or are they still strong? Open to Rom suggestions I am a minimalist. when it comes to roms I like clean fast and long battery life.

I just got my gnex a couple weeks ago. They way I look at it is sprint has got the new nexus phone around six months after they have been released. This phone is perfect for the way I want to use it and will be happy for two years. If sprint does happen to release the new nexus the same time as everybody else I also have another line due for upgrade in January so that swayed my decision also. As far as devolpment slowing down, I'm sure it will still be going for two years. The ns4g is still going pretty good and they have jb.

The Galaxy Nexus will hold up much better over time than any other phone. If you've been happy with the OG Evo for 2 years than you should be happy with the Gnex for 2 years. Compare it against the Evo LTE, the Gnex will be more likely to have the latest versions of Android without bugs.
I absolutely LOVE my Nexus. It's night and day from my Epic on CM9, which in all honesty was not a bad setup or device. I'm sure I will be perfectly happy till upgrade time. Got mine about a week or so ago.

Google Voice is awesome. The wife and I once had to switch phone numbers for stupid rebate reasons and since I had already given everyone my Voice number all I had to do was login and change my number that Voice forwarded to. No one had to update their contact information or even know about it.
So in nov I signed up with tmobile and got the note and a gs3 for my wife. I plan on selling the note and getting the s4 in march. I call tmobile to pay it off and they tell me I have to pay both phones off? This isn't what the agent told me when I signed up. He knew I swap phones about every 6 months. So my question is why can't I pay the note off separate? My wife never upgrades her phone plus it would lower my bill per month down. Tmobile is ending the subsidiaries anyways so I don't see what the issue is? The reason I went gsm is to be able to put any phone on the carrier as I like, such as international versions.
Talk to a different rep. Cause that rep is an asshole
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app
Nope just spoke to customer relations and was told it cannot be done until tmobile ends the subsidiaries in a few months. No way in hell I'm paying $700+ for both phones. Basically the rep I signed up with flat out lied to me. If I would of known this I would of just bought my note full retail. Really ticked off right now.
$720 for both phones + $600 or so for the s4 is just too much for me.
3rd damn carrier that seems to lure their customers in with lies. Who would refuse me paying off a phone today? Basically I was told their systems cannot allow only one device to be payed off until may when they change their policies. This is really going to screw over a lot of people. I just don't get it.
Can anyone explain tmobiles logic in this? I'm baffled.
I've heard that since it was Even More Plus. The credit line is for everything combined, you can't separate them out. No idea if that's the truth, but they have been consistent in telling me that. If you were lied to, that really sucks and, IMO, they should try to do something for you. No idea what, but they could offer something.
Not much help, but at least confirming what they are telling you now anyway.

Yeah I have it in writing too from the original kiosk rep. I'm really ticked as I talk to this guy all the time when I'm at the mall. Tmobile is investigating what he told me and I've notified his manger. This really screws anyone who wants to get another phone anytime before may. I just don't understand the logic. Why would they care if I decide to pay the device off? Now I'm screwed if I wanted to get the s4 in a few weeks unless I add a 3rd line.
Now I can see why so many go prepaid. To avoid all of the carrier BS. This is worse then what I dealt with on both sprint and Verizon.
There has to be a loophole for this. Any ideas guys?
It does make sense that the credit extended is put into one loan. I'm sure it makes it easier on the accounting for them....... BUT...... If that guy told you something different, I would go straight to him and have him help you get this sorted out immediately. He's the one that gave you misinformation, I would make him spend time working to correct it also.
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda premium
yeah, this really makes no sense to me why they would require this just because the phone accounts are linked? Just to be sure though, I'm going to make sure I buy my phone and my wife's phone separately.
Im told its becuase both phones were purchased together but that was becuase thats the day i switched from verizon to tmobile. The rep knew i switch devices often and told me it wouldnt be an issue. I got an email from the manager that they are investigating. If any of you bought the phones together id check on this. Im glad they are ending the pay per month on the phones BS. From now on ill pay full price.
This happened to me too. Opened a tmo business account and bought an S3 and a cheap text phone for the wife. Financed $500 between the two, and was told I could pay them off seperately. The note 2 comes out, so I go to pay the balance of the S3. I was told the same, you have to pay both off because they where contracted at ths same time. But I still had enough available credit to finance the note 2, swap the sim from the S3 in to the note 2, put the S3 on Craigslist, it sold the next day for the $400 balance I had on the note 2. Walked in to tmo the very next day and paid the note 2 off.
This is just an idea, I don't know for sure if it will work, but when I bought
my Note and my wife's phone, they told me that is no penalty if I pay
the phone(s) in advance OR if I pay more per month to shorten the pay
period of 20 months.
So, I guess you can go into the store and tell them you want to pay, let's say
$300 in the account for the phones. That will lower your montly payment, just
like you payed yours out and not "mess" with they're account number.
It's worth a try anyway....
Wait. So I have a $2000 credit on my account for devices. There's like $700 available. Your saying they won't let me pay a partial payment towards that?

I think you can make a partial payment, but your monthly bill stays the same until its all paid off

i was told flat out i cannot pay off just one device, it has to be all of them or none until they end the subsidies and change their systems in may. im waiting to hear back from the store manager.

the way tmobile does business is BS. never had this issue on sprint or verizon, i could swap phones when ever i wanted without penalties. knowing me the s4 will be announced and ill get impatient and just pay the $720 off and get the new phone lol. from now on ill always just buy my devices outright.
You could do what I did. Pay the deposit on the new phone and finance the rest, sell the old phone, then pay off the new phone.

i get what your saying but until these phones are payed off i wouldn't be able to activate the s4 or whatever phone on the current lines without penalty. id have to open a 3rd line. if i cannot get this resolved i guess ill just have to wait until they change their systems in late april or may.

that's when tmobile gets the s4, i was planning on buying the international version as it will ship much sooner than the US carriers will get it. plus from now on i won't finance phones from tmobile, ill buy them outright. if that's what you meant buy putting a deposit down.
it's my fault for believing the rep and not reading all of the fine print. the dude must be like a car salesman. says anything for a sale.

If that is the case, which I will call tomorrow and find out, me and tmobile are gonna have a huge problem. I upgrade very often. If I can't pay a portion of that off to free up space for a new device there's no point.

same here man, i upgrade very often. go ahead and call and i bet you get the same response i was given. once they end the subsidies and change the policies you will be able to pay just one device off. "take that with a grain of salt". to me this just doesn't make much business sense. if i finance two cars at the same time for lets say 2 years and decide to pay one of them off early i doubt anyone would be complaining getting their money early.

My daughter lost her GN II a while back, about 2 months ago to be exact. We did the insurance thing and got a replacement. Going through all the stuff in her room she no longer wanted and guess what? We found her frickin phone that we reported lost/stolen. Question is being that we reported it stolen/lost, I know there's probably not a way to activate it on sprint or a different carrier or anything but would she still be able to use it as as lets say a tablet for just wifi stuff etc...? Not 100% sure on Sprints regulations and I really don't want to send it back as I've already paid for the re-placement. Any ideas would be helpful? I've hear several things so I have it on Airplane mode right now and wanted to ask here to see if anyone else has had something similar happen and if they were able to use the device after as say a tablet or even re-activate it or flash it in some way.

Well not exactly sure but check your contract paperwork. Legally you might need to return it but again I dont know for sure.

hmm, thanks for the reply. Anyone else have any idea if it can even be used a tablet on wifi?
Sure you can use it as a tablet. You can also take it and put it on cricket or other non sprint cdma provider. Well if you know what you are doing you can even put it back on sprint.
The thing is what is legal? Really the phone belongs to sprint till you have paid it off (phone prices are subsidized by your plan). Since you reported it stolen then you only paid part of it. Most likely you had to pay extra to get your replacement to help cover part of the price of the new one. This means the lost phone is not paid for and does still belong to sprint.
What you do is your choice. Will sprint come after you over the phone? Highly unlikely but there is always a possibility of it.
Now to legally keep the phone all you need to do is call sprint and tell them that the phone was found. You will have to either place it on another line, pay off the balance, or return the phone to sprint.
Hopefully this will cover all your questions about it.

I would call sprint and let them know it was found. Since you already had it replaced when you thought it was lost and gone forever, they're not going to tell you return the replacement and switch back to the old phone. Depending on your point of view, the worse thing they'll want you to turn in the old phone. Personally, I think that would be a nice option because what else are you going to do with it? To keep it means you have a WiFi only 5.5" tablet, or you have to open a new line to use it as a phablet. And I find having anything less than a 10" tablet is a waste when I have the GN2.
I just see a whole lot of problems if you're discovered with the phone and it's still believe to be stolen. Not that I think Sprint would go after you, but there is very slim possibly they could go after you for fraud.
Actually, the recovered phone belongs to the insurance carrier now. And, as they are partnered with Sprint, Sprint will mark the ESN as bad, so you can't flash it to another carrier.
