Quick question. Before I finally start installing new ROMs for my 1st time, and I end up not liking them due to errors, how am I supposed to restore? Do I have to WIPE everything before restoring my backup to stock EL29?

Its best to wipe before installing or restoring anything.

Use kies to backup now before you start anything at a minimum.
Are you saying that you're currently pure stock el29 at the moment or is that your goal?

I am a currently running swagged out stock but would like to see decks ics ROM, would backing up sos and restoring to it after checking out the ics ROM be fine? will i have to wipe anything between the two ROMs?

Just do a back up via recovery. Then flash your new from. Afterwards restore via recovery and you will be fine

Yes, backing up your rom, trying a new one, and flashing back is perfectly fine, everyone here does it.
Just remember to wipe everything BEFORE flashing (restoring). Restoring a backup is just like flashing a new rom, you need to wipe before flashing.
I never wipe when restoring a backup. It's just an image.

Also, just an FYI - backups WON'T work (or maybe worse than just that) if you repartition between bking up and restoring.
It's only Flashahol, try a sip...
Useing CWM wiping everything clean to install a rom. At this point back up useing CWM. Now if I just restored that backup before every rom would that be like wiping everything for it?

If you don't perform the wipe before installing a different rom, all you are doing is installing over top of, and you can run into problems that way. The exception would be that some of the developers start the installation by formatting.

Ok so imo, i dont think it works...i have zero base for my opinion. But even if it does work why? Wiping is faster than restoring anyway. Flashing TDJ's superwipe is even better and still faster than restoring.

You want to backup before you wipe because if you backup afterwards you would be backing up either a blank ROM or by a small chance a wiped version of your current one.

A friend created a nandroid and Titanium backup for me, and my phone is rooted. I'm currently on ICS and I want to go back to GB, Do I have to Restore Epic 4G Touch With Pre-Rooted Stock Gingerbread Firmware — EL29? or can I just use nandroid recovery since it's like a full system image right?
So confused. Want to go back to old GB without losing apps or settings. Please help?
You can restore the nandroid from a safe recovery like EL26.

N00B here, seriously. I was a WEBOS fan and I rooted there but it's difficult for me to understand the terms for Android and the fragmentation doesn't help

Yes that helps. If you don't like ICS (FF18) ODIN back to EL29 (Gingerbread). thats the safest way or to keep what you had under your backup; ODIN Direct boot kernel here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662295 its under the GB touchwiz based kernels. Flash that kernel, it will only boot to CWM and then restore your backup. But to let you know, there are better custom ICS ROMs that are very smooth and stable. Just make sure you use the safe kernel/recovery like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1767421 Then you can safely wipe and flash any ICS ROMs you choose.

It seems like it will factory restore and wipe everything>
Is there a way to just use the backup and reset it to then? If so can you please dumb down instructions and what it will do? I really really appreciate any help. I'm sure that once I go through it, it will make more sense but at this time, I'm overwhelmed by all the different setups and instructions from different places.

Ok get titanium back or a backup app. Then back up all your apps, just apps not system settings. then with titanium back up you can make a flashable zip. odin back to EL29 + CWM. let it boot up. Then power off, reboot into recovery. Flash Titanium backup Zip. Reboot. the titanium backup app will be on your phone. then restore apps only, not apps with data as ICS is very different. All done

Nandroids are used to restore backups. They are backups. If you backed up a GB rom. You can restore all your settings as long as you are on a GB rom.

I would love to LOVE ICS but the only thing I want my SGII to do without apps or widgets that I have to turn on and off to use:
Control orientation: I sometimes read in bed and it irks me that I have to use an app called Autorotate Switch to stop it from switching views, it does work but sometimes cuts off the top of a chapter. I can also hear it "fighting" with the system to prevent it from rotating based on the angle I'm holding it.
Control Brightness: The lowest setting isn't dim enough and I have to use a screen filter. Now with ICS it autoadjusts the lighting even when the toggle is off the setting to adjust brightness automatically! I hate this new feature.
Social Hub: I actually like this since it integrates msg and email and fb together. The new ICS lets me easily delete without confirmation, something that's good, but it broke update syncing contacts and the emails are huge and it's a big mess with scrolling and spacing.
Camera: All I want is to assign a shutter button to a camera
Phone: I want to call out in speaker automatically. I had set this up in WebOs and it was awesome especially for driving.
I seriously would consider trying out other ROMs if they can help me do this...

How would I do this? My friend made an nandroid in GB BEFORE I upgraded to ICS. Please and thank you in advance!
That is the GB direct boot kernel that I linked it the previous reply. Flash that kernel/recovery in ODIN or mobile ODIN. Then restore back up in backup/restore option in CWM recovery.

Noob question, I should know this by now, but I don't. What exactly gets backed up with a nandroid? I was thinking of trying some JB roms but don't want to reconfigure my working ICS stuff in case something is not working correctly or I don't like it. Will a nandroid restore bring back everything that was on my phone at the time seamlessly? I know some of you flash roms daily and assume that nandroid backups are the way to go, but I want to make sure. Thanks!

On TWRP, it gives you some options, but the usual that is backed up is system, data and boot. Basically your entire current installation. Nandroids will bring back everything back.

A nandroid backup is an exactly image off your boot, kernel, operating system, dalvick cache, android secure, and cache.

But should i completly do a clean up be4 doing the restore and does the restore be as good as the last time I used it? Or will it have some issues after first restore?

Restoring is better and less work than flashing through odin.
No wipe is neccery with restore..I personaly prefer Twrp cause it saves your efs and modem in seperate partitions for easy restore.

Yes just tap on restore; it automatically wipes and restores each partition you've backed up.

in my experience, I always backup the ROM I'm using before flashing any new ROMs
in any ROM backup, I recommend that you checked the boot, system & data (I use TWRP recovery) if you want to revert to it later on
if all three items are checked, you can just restore it & it'll be the same as when you backed it up
as for the wipe, I always wipe (data, cache & dalvik cache) before flashing &/ restore anything, just to be on the safe side
