Noob question, I should know this by now, but I don't. What exactly gets backed up with a nandroid? I was thinking of trying some JB roms but don't want to reconfigure my working ICS stuff in case something is not working correctly or I don't like it. Will a nandroid restore bring back everything that was on my phone at the time seamlessly? I know some of you flash roms daily and assume that nandroid backups are the way to go, but I want to make sure. Thanks!

On TWRP, it gives you some options, but the usual that is backed up is system, data and boot. Basically your entire current installation. Nandroids will bring back everything back.

Sorry for the dumb question, but a full nandroid backup, is done how? With titanium, or rom manager. Like I said sorry for the dumb question but everything I read just confused me. I'm really not that dumb just need some because I confused myself. Thanks!

I am new to this stuff but I learned pretty quick because I truly love my Evo so I want the best for it! (roms/kernels) but I over think everything so I need a few dumb questions answered from time to time...

Nandroid backup is done through the recovery menu. Use titanium backup for the apps, sms backup for the texts, and for the contacts, go to contacts, hit menu then export to SD CARD.
Swyped from my sexy EVO.
They aren't dumb questions, you're just starting out. But:
1. Titanium backup is to backup your apps and system, in case you do a clean wipe. backup your apps every so often, especially when you changing roms.
2. If on clockwork recovery, you can backup your rom using it.
3. You can manually backup by turning the off the phone, powering back up, but holding vol+down ad you do, and then in the bootloader screen. Once there, select recovery, then go to backup/restore.
Thanks roxx, you cleared up what I said. You always seem to answer my questions or be in the same thread as me.

Cool thanks! I know how to flash roms through rom manager and kernels in recovery. I thought I was doing a nandroid backup by backing up my stock rom before flashing a new one. So I just boot into recovery (rom manager,or root manager) can't remember if it's root manager? But get into recovery and it will say nandroid backup? Once again thanks for helping me. I want to switch to a non-sense rom but don't wanna mess up my Evo!

Well you can boot into recovery from rom manager, just select reboot into recovery. And I believe you're referring to the bootloader screen. And it only says "nandroid' if you're on amon_ra recovery, but nandroid/backup are the exact same thing. On clockwork, navigate to backup/restore, then backup..and it'll take about 2-5 minutes. After that, go back to the main menu, and wipe factory/data, cache, and then go under advanced and wipe the dalvik cache. After that, install zip from sdcard > install zip > select your rom. And when you boot up, log in, blah blah, then use titanium backup to restore your apps but NOT system settings, or you can get some force closes.
If that's the case, why do I need to flash back to stock rom before flashing a new one? If I'm backing up my phone with a custom rom? Or do I flash back to stock then do a nandroid? You can stop me anytime...lol..I am normal...i swear I am

Lawlz, you don't have to flash back to the original stock rom before flashing a new one. You just backup your current rom, then flash the new one. You always backup befpre flashing in case something bad happens.
1. Backup/nandroid current rom
2. Wipe factory/data, cache, dalvik cache
3. Flash new rom
4.
And its good to ask questions.
Wow THANK YOU! That makes my life soo much easier. Thank everyone I think I now what I'm doing now and not just doing it! You guys rock!

Anytime, and glad you've got it clear. Always here to help if ya ever need anything.
If they used the proper term, it might be much less confusing. Backups made from the recovery menu are synonymous with making an image of the phone's entire file structure (similar to acronis trueimage for windows). This includes all the system files, applications, settings, and any related customizations.
Titanium backup on the other hand serves the function of baking up an individual application and its' associated data. I don't think there's an equivalent of this on the pc, but you get the idea.
I still don't know where this term 'nandroid' comes from. I've seen it used both as a noun and verb on here, which only complicates matters for those not familiar with the android terminology.

'Nandroid' come from amon_ra, its what its listed from you when backup. Nandroid backup/restore. I personally don't know where it came from, but that's where people get it from.

I think it was a coined term relating to android, as that is the root of the word.
Nand is the type of flash memory that is used internally on our phones for the android system.
Nand + Android = Nandroid
I'm guessing that's how Amon came up with the name.

Just do a back up via recovery. Then flash your new from. Afterwards restore via recovery and you will be fine

Yes, backing up your rom, trying a new one, and flashing back is perfectly fine, everyone here does it.
Just remember to wipe everything BEFORE flashing (restoring). Restoring a backup is just like flashing a new rom, you need to wipe before flashing.
I never wipe when restoring a backup. It's just an image.

Also, just an FYI - backups WON'T work (or maybe worse than just that) if you repartition between bking up and restoring.

umm...I thought CWM recovery backed up everything...including data (excluding microSD card).
So, if I restore it, it restores the original Kernel and ROM? Is that correct?
If something goes wrong, while flashing new kernels/ROMS, I can boot into recovery and just restore?
I'm already rooted, I just want to be sure before I start messing with my device.
Thaks!

you are correct the Nandroid backup built into the CWM recovery will back up everything on your phone as it is. including any ext partition on your external SD card. (will not backup your FAT partition where your normal downloads and pictures go, as this is where the backups are stored) but your ROM, all apps and their data and anything on your EXT partition (if you have one) will be backed up.
i suggest copying the clockworkmod backup folder to your computer before flashing anything else. just in case it messes up your SD card somehow.
doing the full restore will automatically restore ROM apps and data as they were when you backed up. feel free to flash as many roms as you want, just make sure to keep your backup safe. and to wipe all data in between roms as usual.
although titanium backup is amazing. and will backup apps and their data while booted inside your rom. its amazing, check it out.
Cwm backs up everthing including rom, kernel, and data. When you restore your backup it will restore your phone the way it was the moment that you backed it up.

Is it possible to save a data partition from your existing ROM that can be flashed with Mobile Odin? So i could flash a new Rom, Kernel, Modem, then the specific Data partition that I saved from my ROM that holds all my user specific data. Is something like that possible? I am tired of having to set all the apps, data, email servers, and appearances of my old ROM back up after flashing a new ROM. It wont stop me from flashing if I cant......LOL...just wondering if its possible.
I know there is TB and Backup apps but they still take to long to do everything needed. I am lookingfor a one flash type thing to just reapply all user data specific stuff. Possible?

You sure can sir, just make sure you don't restore from gb to ics or vice versa, simply go into recovery after new rom is flashed and wipe cache and delvik cache then go to backup and restore and advance restore your data
Awesome, I will give it a try on the next round of leaks!
Thanks.
Just wanted to stop back in and say holy Sh!t. Why have I been bothering with TB and MyBackupPro for so long when I could have been doing this. Soooooooooo much easier.
Make a backup of your data in advance backup
install new rom
restore data with advance restore
Done
No more email setup
No more passwords for wifi
No more home screen setup
Its all done by advance backup and advance restore.
Restoring just got way easier.

Because it doesn't always work....if recovery gives you a md5 mismatch or something and alot of times it can cause force close... Do keep a titanium backup also just in case
Also you can usually do this from tw to tw but not tw to aosp ....can cause problems like I said....similar roms usually ok

If you are on a good kernel with good recovery and not restoring say from GB to ICS it has always worked for me on my Epic and Epic Touch. Now, if you are changing between GB and ICS it can throw all kinds of gapps, acore, and Google Services Framework errors at you so you may want to keep a Titanium backup like Epix said...just in case

Either way is fine with any rom.
You can mske a backup of whatever you are using, flash a new rom and then revert to the backup if you want.
Or you can just start all over and flash another rom. You need to full wipe always.

I've never found any bugs with a nandroid backup and have used it on multiple devices.
Sometimes if you restore app data using something like titanium you can get probs depending on the rom but nandroid backups are fine.
last time i used nandroid on sabsa prime 3.0 i got bootloop... just wanted to warn prospect since lots of people got those problems even with nandroid.

So technically the only time one should perform a nandroid backup is when he/she wants to switch back to the stock fimware otherwise "install zip from sdcard" is better

No.
You can make a nandroid backup anytime you want and restore it. It is advisable to make backups before flashing anything to the phone. Mods, scripts, etc. Just in case something goes wrong. That way yoy can go back right where you left it.
The other member, seems to have been talking about that particular rom, however strange it may sound. And there is always the possibility that in that case, either the member did something wrong or it was an isolated case.
