[Q] Flickering Screen Progression - HTC One X

Hey guys I just started getting the flickering backlight problem on my one x. I've noticed its gotten a little worse since it first appeared but I wanted to see if it actually progresses and gets worse and worse. I don't have time to send the phone in for repair (off to college in a few days) and I'm considering just dealing with the flickering. Also, my bootloader is unlocked so I dunno if they will fix it.
Thanks

+1 to Lawrence's comment, if it's 1.28, that's your problem its a very, very buggy software release if you ask me.

I'm not sure, if you've not long upgraded or flashed it mine took around 3 days to settle the voltages and stop flickering

Also is it specifically on the grey backgrounds I.e the recent apps screen?
Sent from my HTC One X

2.17.401.2 and yeah its mostly on grey backgrounds. Sometimes the recent apps screen but not always. I've noticed it doesn't happen all the time. Maybe its linked to brightness? Thanks for the help by the way

Oh, that's the most recent update which I also have, that's a bit confusing maybe it is brightness related. If it's like a strobe light on the recent app screen specifically on recent app background then it sounds like the software bug, but if you said you've had the software on for a few weeks, I'm a little confused. Maybe you should wait. A little longer and see if it settles.
No problem, always like to help
Sent from my HTC One X

Hmm okay. Yeah its a very faint and fast flickering on certain shades of grey. Hopefully its just software. I don't really have time to send it to HTC. I'll give it some time to settle. Maybe the next update of arhd will fix it. Thank you very much!

I hope it gets sorted for you! Good luck and sorry I couldn't help anymore!

Australian OTA Update for OPTUS 128.980.10

128.980.10 is now out on Optus branded handsets. See any difference?
My phone was running great before, but now I am stuck at title screen, and its very difficult to scroll on the menus!
A bit wierd Im sure it will come good.
So I played with it for about 2 mins and it finally cleared up. Running pretty smooth. Some parts are super laggy, but my phone was like that when I first got it. Once I had been around the phone and seen everything the phone behaves super smooth. Its like it needs to see everything one time then its smooth.
Anyways ill report back any noticable differences over the next few days.
Just did the same update and first thing I can notice is that my WiFi has become alot more responsive. Is very quick to react when searching over WiFi and no delays. Apart from that I'm not too sure because it's too early to comment. Will keep all posted

Unfortunately, im getting a wierd error Ihave never seen before, and everything is now reaaaaly unresponsive.
It says "android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly".
What can I do to stop this. sort of annoying cause my phone was actually pretty smooth and had great battery life before hand anyway!
EDIT:
While typing this message. I just got:
"com.android.settings" is not responding.

WHAT!>?
Where is it.
PS My phone is getting worse and worse.. the home keys barely work anymore. i have turned it on and off. I have even done that clear contacts cache under manage sources for contact info. Sometime when I try and wake the phone from sleep with the power lock button, it just stays off, for about 45 seconds. When it comes to, it is almost bricked.. just slow and the menus wont scroll properly.
Ah yes, google search leads me here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755968
So my HBOOT whatever that is, is 0.94.0000
im going to have to start my phone from scratch.. sorry guys I cant recommend this update for Aussie Optus people. maybe its something simple I dont know, but i updated it following the instructions perfectly, and the phone is now screwed. Im going to try and hard reset and reinstall everything on my phone all over again.

You're downloaded update had an error. Are you rooted from HTC dev? If not (judging from your question re hboot) take it back. The update failed and needs to be reflashed. Unfortunately without being rooted this can't be done. Easy enough to gain root but that has other consequences.

Hope this worked but I'm not sure it will. The android core process error is common with flashaholics who have not wiped a phone properly when changing base firmwares. Which is what we have done with the Optus ota. For me it worked fine.

The phone is now bricked guys. No I don't do any of this rooting stuff, I'm just learning the phone as it is from factory. I just got the Optus OTA installed it and now my phone is stuffed.
It's stuck on the 3 android with white background picture. I can't make the menu come up in this white screen. It just says "checking SD card update".
If I go to menu, normal menu with icons and sense 4.0, doesn't like any touch, completely unresponsive and will not accept me doing any functions, including resetting the phone. I can't do hard or soft reset.
Damn Optus update. Even before my phone got that green banding. Now this tops it off.
Two options return and enjoy new one. Or obtain root and flash ruu to return phone to stock software. Pick one and I can walk you through it. Will provide links to show you exact method but without flashing experience you will have questions that I can answer for you. Up to you which path you want to go.

[POLL] - 1.29.401.11 ota - Does it fix your flicker issues?

I thought I would start a poll thread to see if we can gauge the effectiveness of the latest 1.29.401.11 ota update in fixing our screen flicker problems.
It will be best to submit your personal result after a few days usage as the fix apparently takes a few days to learn and adjust your voltage before it can be come noticeable.
Let's hope the results are favourable.
Update (17th May):
Well, so far so good for the latest update, the signs are very positive for a lot of users, still not happening for some although as a few of you have said it is early days to be feeding back on the effectiveness of the update, as HTC have said it can take 1-2 weeks for the flicker to go away. Although there is a fast fix method you can try which is working for many:
Fast fix (after a full charge):
Unplug device from charge
Turn the screen up to full brightness and disable auto adjust
Use the device/leave it on for 1 hour
Turn the screen off and leave it off for 5-10 minutes
Turn the screen back on and use at full brightness again for another hour
Repeat the process for 4-5 cycles
I would then advise returning the screen to your normal brightness settings and using it as normal for a few further days to see if the issue totally goes away
Report back if you can.
I cant vote till I am on the xda app right now but my flicker is gone since today. I updated yesterday and let it on full brightness some time
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
I have only experienced the flicker issue once when 3G was disabled and I was connected via EDGE but I was not able to reproduce this behavior.
I will report after few days of testing. So far I can tell its still there, maybe got abit better, but need to test more.

These are positive signs.
It's been told that it can take up to 14 days to correct itself and you're saying people should vote after a few days usage. I'm sorry but what is the point of opening this thread right now?
I'm saying this because people don't read. They'll check whether the issue is gone right after updating to 1.29 OTA and vote accordingly. And that will cause a misleading poll for people like me waiting to buy this phone because of this issue. At least the poll should be closed right now.

I totally agree with this. The poll should be put on hold, or at least someone should vote after say 5/10 days of usage (and/or) few days with max brightness.

As it states in the OP, it is best to post after a few days usage with the latest update.
However many people are already reporting the flicker as fixed or getting better, and many people are trying the fast fix by leaving the screen on full brightness and this poll gives those 1X owners the opportunity to vote on preliminary findings.
I, and others already see the poll as useful, I am in the same boat as UMD, waiting to see if the issues are going to be resolved through a software update before I pull the trigger and buy the handset.
I can confirm that the flickering seems to disappear!! My device struggled with the flickering problem when it runs @ max. brightness level and from time to time while on auto brightness. After installing der latest OTA yesterday @ 7 pm i set it to max. brightness and used it very much, till device ran out of juice!
While it has been on charge i did NOT use the device! After full charge im running it again at max. brightness and playin' around (Whatsapp, some games, browsing). I check nearly every 15-30 minutes my battery graph because i experienced the heaviest flickering while seeing that battery screen like in the attachments @ the end of my post!
Furthermore i am checking the full grey image in the HTC pictures app again and again.
What can i say? It is getting MUCH MUCH better every hour! Before the update i had sometimes very bad flickering but now it is nearly gone! Another thing i would like to say is that it is NOT related to heat because i just played Shadowgun and Glowball and the HOX had a temperature of 47°C! After the gaming session i opened the full grey picture and the flickering has NOT regained!
You can check the flickering with the two pics i added in the attachments!
I will report when the flickering has completly gone! But i want to say that open a full grey picture and let it stay with display timeout set to zero did NOT change anything for me! I had to play around so that the display contents changed.
Didnt have it before... So cant vote ....

I can't find any changes yet except the machine is smoother than before.
I have a HK phone, I'm in the UK right now, just got the update.
This is the second 1.29 for HK, it is probably equivalent to 1.29.401.11, so should solve missing storage space and flickering, if you had those problems.
It could be equivalent to .12, we need to compare radio versions, I guess.

HTC just said the update improvement performance.
Test it for whole day. This is what I have noticed so far.
Speed improved when loading very large web page.
Bettery improved during 3G call.
Power consumption became normal in some mini games.
Faster charging time.
Less heat generated.
Seems more lag in facebook app. But seems battery improved.
The screen seems consume less power just got less then 40% after the update. It used to be 58%. However, it looks less contrast. (Nvidia PRISM??)

Hi Guys,
I am new to the forum but have been reading your phone reviews for a while and really pleased with the help and advice you have given in the past. I have the new HTC one X and never had any issue that other people have complained about etc etc, not one problem at all. its never overheated, never crashed, or had screen issues - BUT as soon I installed the new update my phone has been crashing all day. When my phone rings it turns off, when I leave it alone it reboots, half way through a conversation it reboots. I have not installed any additional apps after the update and as far as I know its only started after the update?? Also my battery is getting milked to death.
Also I am not that computer savvy so please keep the English in layman's terms!!!
Please help shed some light on this as I have been loving this phone, but its completely killing me at the moment.
Thanks again guys

There is a pretty good chance that it is permanent hardware damage caused by the software setting display voltage too high.
I would probably get warranty repair done, but only if I knew that the repair work would be done right.
I returned mine (backlight flickering) and they updated it... To the latest version i allredy had on tomorrow i will demand a new phone and aks if the sum of the iq of the people that worked on my phone can be compared to my spare tyre

It was supposed to fix the issue, but I suspect that those who were on updates that had the original flickering issue for too long may have actually had their phones damaged by the overvoltage.

I'm on the latest (stock) update and mine still flickers - although only slightly. (Still enough to notice on light backgrounds, though - and not all the time.)
I used to have the flicker with the stock firmware (it was 1.29 I think), after I updated to test 2.05 and now to 2.15 the flicker issue is gone.
It's a shame that HTC didn't fixed the issue faster, but in the end it's OK.
There was a massive thread on this that kinda fizzled out not too long ago, I think the general consensus was that after the 1.29 update it took about two weeks for the software to settle in and the flickering will disappear.
You mean flickering like a strobe light effect as there were two known kinds.

I don't want to hijack someone else's thread, but mine is not the strobe - it is the slight (but noticeable) flicker on light backgrounds, as you might find in a fluorescent bulb which is struggling to stay alight. I am on Voda UK, 1.29.161.13 which is the latest OTA and I have been using it for more than two weeks, so the flicker should have gone. In all other respects, my phone is rock-solid; I don't want to swap it and take the chance I'll get a worse model back and I can't be without it whilst it is in for repair. I guess I'm hoping that a later OTA will fix the problem. Is that a reasonable expectation?

That's what I was experiencing, Eg on the light grey backgrounds it's a light flickering. Mine went away and I don't experience it anymore.
I seem to remember it dissapearing after I got 1.29.401.11 iirc...

Yeah please do.
But again guys I know it's a slog but reading through that thread might allay any concerns you have and shed some insight into the issue

Ok so here is the backlight flickering verdict. Its still the same nothing changed. The people who reported that it was fixed probably installed the update sooner then me and did not experienced hardware damage. Its safe to say i have to return mine

I'm a bit late, but heyho. I also experienced the flicker when I was on 1.28. Especially on the recent apps grey screem. But I flashed a newer base and its disappeared in 3 days (ish). I flashed the 2.17 base by the way. But, like others have said 1.29 was apparently the update which fixed the flicker, just took a few days to settle. So glad its gone. Hope you have the same outcome.

Best rom yet, smooth, fluid and fast! Sense feels like a new experience that now I use it and not replaced it with a third party launcher.
It's a big improvement from the previous bases, it can only get better with future updates. I don't use stock but use custom roms so should be very similar performance wise.
Screen flicker was solved on the 1.2.9 release however saying that I did experience slight flicker on the 2.1.7 base but I think that was related to auto brightness as it seems to have disappeared now as well after a few days of settling down.

Anyone fixed the reddish tint on black images ?

Sorry if this has been asked. I haven't been on since I return mine 2 months ago.
Just wondering if anyone fixed this yet?
( When I flash root and watch videos in the dark and the brightness is set to low, blacks on the screen would get a reddish tint to them. )
I dont have this problem. . U sure ur screen isnt defective?

Dont know, but some other people had the same issue as me.
I got a new GS4 today, but havent tested it i'm screwed it will happen again.
It would only happen after I would root the phone. It work normal when it was running the stock rom.
I have the same issue. It dose it when I scroll in the Greyed out parts of the settings menu or any time the screen is dark

Yeah I just did an exchange today behind this issue. I'm debating on whether to exchange again, or just deal with it. Just chiming in verifying with others this issue exist in some units.

If this only happened to you after rooting and changing roms, then your issue is not hardware.

I got a new one last week and there was no longer an issue with it.
I'm now able to root/flash and the Black are pitch Blacks!
Hope you all get this fixed I know how annoying it can be!
I've never noticed the issue, but i hate the distorted colours on stock. Whites arent white, and colours all seem off tinted. Its something i only noticed on my Galaxy S3 when i first got the ability to use Trinity Colour settings. Since then and when i first got my S4, the first thing i did was flash with Trinity Colours on cool settings, and it just makes the colours soooo much more real and vibrant and clear. It fixes the display and gives you that true colour experience that stock lacks. I find the default colours are more offset with a yellowish tint though, which looks terrible in my eyes.
