Hi Folks,
My HOX has this flickering light problem with its Display. Now i need to know if this is a Hardware fault, and it has to be repaired. Or is this Software related and i have to wait until next OTA?
My Device is a HT24 with german 1.29

There is a pretty good chance that it is permanent hardware damage caused by the software setting display voltage too high.
I would probably get warranty repair done, but only if I knew that the repair work would be done right.
I returned mine (backlight flickering) and they updated it... To the latest version i allredy had on tomorrow i will demand a new phone and aks if the sum of the iq of the people that worked on my phone can be compared to my spare tyre

The 1.29.401.11 update that was issued fixed the flickering. You need to wait a while for the update to go.

It was supposed to fix the issue, but I suspect that those who were on updates that had the original flickering issue for too long may have actually had their phones damaged by the overvoltage.

I'm on the latest (stock) update and mine still flickers - although only slightly. (Still enough to notice on light backgrounds, though - and not all the time.)
I used to have the flicker with the stock firmware (it was 1.29 I think), after I updated to test 2.05 and now to 2.15 the flicker issue is gone.
It's a shame that HTC didn't fixed the issue faster, but in the end it's OK.
There was a massive thread on this that kinda fizzled out not too long ago, I think the general consensus was that after the 1.29 update it took about two weeks for the software to settle in and the flickering will disappear.
You mean flickering like a strobe light effect as there were two known kinds.

I don't want to hijack someone else's thread, but mine is not the strobe - it is the slight (but noticeable) flicker on light backgrounds, as you might find in a fluorescent bulb which is struggling to stay alight. I am on Voda UK, 1.29.161.13 which is the latest OTA and I have been using it for more than two weeks, so the flicker should have gone. In all other respects, my phone is rock-solid; I don't want to swap it and take the chance I'll get a worse model back and I can't be without it whilst it is in for repair. I guess I'm hoping that a later OTA will fix the problem. Is that a reasonable expectation?

That's what I was experiencing, Eg on the light grey backgrounds it's a light flickering. Mine went away and I don't experience it anymore.
I seem to remember it dissapearing after I got 1.29.401.11 iirc...

I'm a bit late, but heyho. I also experienced the flicker when I was on 1.28. Especially on the recent apps grey screem. But I flashed a newer base and its disappeared in 3 days (ish). I flashed the 2.17 base by the way. But, like others have said 1.29 was apparently the update which fixed the flicker, just took a few days to settle. So glad its gone. Hope you have the same outcome.

Best rom yet, smooth, fluid and fast! Sense feels like a new experience that now I use it and not replaced it with a third party launcher.
It's a big improvement from the previous bases, it can only get better with future updates. I don't use stock but use custom roms so should be very similar performance wise.
Screen flicker was solved on the 1.2.9 release however saying that I did experience slight flicker on the 2.1.7 base but I think that was related to auto brightness as it seems to have disappeared now as well after a few days of settling down.

Yes, the so called 4.0.4 update should include this switch.
Not sure why HTC withhold this, maybe they want to directly jump to JB.

Yes, I'm in Hong Kong.
I can't find any changes yet except the machine is smoother than before.
I have a HK phone, I'm in the UK right now, just got the update.
This is the second 1.29 for HK, it is probably equivalent to 1.29.401.11, so should solve missing storage space and flickering, if you had those problems.
It could be equivalent to .12, we need to compare radio versions, I guess.

The update is 72.9MB
HTC just said the update improvement performance.
Test it for whole day. This is what I have noticed so far.
Speed improved when loading very large web page.
Bettery improved during 3G call.
Power consumption became normal in some mini games.
Faster charging time.
Less heat generated.
Seems more lag in facebook app. But seems battery improved.
The screen seems consume less power just got less then 40% after the update. It used to be 58%. However, it looks less contrast. (Nvidia PRISM??)

Hi Guys,
I am new to the forum but have been reading your phone reviews for a while and really pleased with the help and advice you have given in the past. I have the new HTC one X and never had any issue that other people have complained about etc etc, not one problem at all. its never overheated, never crashed, or had screen issues - BUT as soon I installed the new update my phone has been crashing all day. When my phone rings it turns off, when I leave it alone it reboots, half way through a conversation it reboots. I have not installed any additional apps after the update and as far as I know its only started after the update?? Also my battery is getting milked to death.
Also I am not that computer savvy so please keep the English in layman's terms!!!
Please help shed some light on this as I have been loving this phone, but its completely killing me at the moment.
Thanks again guys

I own the one x for a few day now, but the phone has some errors i didn't know from htc till now. The GPS ist unaccurate. Navigon says i'm driving with 50 km/h while i'm standing at a red trafficlight, or it turns 180° or 360°, jumps more than 300 meters into other streets...
is this a softwareproblem?

No this is a hardware issue. I had the same problem with my first Onex bought on launch day. I was sat on sofa in the front room and was doing 72mph and bouncing from street to street. Thankfully I had only had the phone 2 days so I exchanged it at store and 2nd one has been fine since.

I don't personally think this is a hardware issue.
It seems to me that it is a software/radio issue. My GPS was jumping about until i updated my radio and now it's more accurate and doesn't fly around the place.

It's a known issue with many HTC One X handsets. You should get it replaced. One of my friends had the same issue, he tried updating the software etc. as suggested by HTC's support. But it didn't fix the issue, finally after much cribbing they replaced his phone.
Let me know if I helped by clicking thanks

indeed, i can tell you 100% its hardware i took a video when it was doing it which you can find here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVsL6flRNtk
is this the same
whilst taking the video it wasnt as bad as it had been, this was only jumping in a 50m radius
when i asked a dev of ARHD he suggested it was probably a bad Logic Gate in the GPS chip
find it hard to believe its software/radio as the replacement i got (2days after launch) on the same software/radio did not have this problem

If indeed it's a hardware problem how would i experience this before the update and not experience it after the update? It wouldn't make sense?
Can we ask what software version you're currently on? If you're on what i think you're on then it explains EVERYTHING

No worries
A radio is basically the hardware which is used to utilize/use anything connectivity-like. Such as, wifi, phone signal, mobile internet and... GPS.
HTC along with their OTA updates, send updated radio firmware updates which improve signal issues, gps, wifi dropping, call dropping all signal and gps related issues really.
It's how my GPS jumpy issue was fixed, your problem sounds a lot like mine.
I could be wrong, but i wouldn't cry that it's a severe hardware fault yet :fingers-crossed:
If it is a soft issue. Why would it only effect a handful of users.
Also my 2nd 1X currently has been on all Software versions from launch and never had this GPS bug.
You are dilluding yourself if you think its software.
Maybe they have bodged it in the software updates like they did with the flickering screens.
I'm not going to argue this point anymore but if I was you. I would be looking for a replacement from supplier.

That's a great point, the answer is exactly the same as the screen flickering issue & missing storage space. Some people got affected, others didn't, it's as simple as that. All i know is that MY problem was software. How? Because i no longer have the issue after updating, simple really. I don't claim to know everything nor do i know for a fact the OP's issue is software or hardware and neither do you.
There's nothing wrong with a debate? So why you're getting so angry and irate i'll never know
I also had problems with the GPS: could not save walking tracks, because all that jumping made each track at least double the length I walked in reality (well, it always sounds great to tell that I walk at an average speed of 20kph )
This was solved when not using AGPS (and, of cause clearing the cache)
But that made it difficult to get a location quick - most of the times it took longer than a minute, even when outside.
I changed to the Viper ROM and all problems have gone! So, in my case this definately is a software problem.

Hey guys I just started getting the flickering backlight problem on my one x. I've noticed its gotten a little worse since it first appeared but I wanted to see if it actually progresses and gets worse and worse. I don't have time to send the phone in for repair (off to college in a few days) and I'm considering just dealing with the flickering. Also, my bootloader is unlocked so I dunno if they will fix it.
Thanks

Also is it specifically on the grey backgrounds I.e the recent apps screen?
Sent from my HTC One X
2.17.401.2 and yeah its mostly on grey backgrounds. Sometimes the recent apps screen but not always. I've noticed it doesn't happen all the time. Maybe its linked to brightness? Thanks for the help by the way

Oh, that's the most recent update which I also have, that's a bit confusing maybe it is brightness related. If it's like a strobe light on the recent app screen specifically on recent app background then it sounds like the software bug, but if you said you've had the software on for a few weeks, I'm a little confused. Maybe you should wait. A little longer and see if it settles.
No problem, always like to help

Hmm okay. Yeah its a very faint and fast flickering on certain shades of grey. Hopefully its just software. I don't really have time to send it to HTC. I'll give it some time to settle. Maybe the next update of arhd will fix it. Thank you very much!
I hope it gets sorted for you! Good luck and sorry I couldn't help anymore!

Sorry if this has been asked. I haven't been on since I return mine 2 months ago.
Just wondering if anyone fixed this yet?
( When I flash root and watch videos in the dark and the brightness is set to low, blacks on the screen would get a reddish tint to them. )
I dont have this problem. . U sure ur screen isnt defective?

Dont know, but some other people had the same issue as me.
I got a new GS4 today, but havent tested it i'm screwed it will happen again.
It would only happen after I would root the phone. It work normal when it was running the stock rom.
I have the same issue. It dose it when I scroll in the Greyed out parts of the settings menu or any time the screen is dark

If this only happened to you after rooting and changing roms, then your issue is not hardware.

I got a new one last week and there was no longer an issue with it.
I'm now able to root/flash and the Black are pitch Blacks!
Hope you all get this fixed I know how annoying it can be!
I've never noticed the issue, but i hate the distorted colours on stock. Whites arent white, and colours all seem off tinted. Its something i only noticed on my Galaxy S3 when i first got the ability to use Trinity Colour settings. Since then and when i first got my S4, the first thing i did was flash with Trinity Colours on cool settings, and it just makes the colours soooo much more real and vibrant and clear. It fixes the display and gives you that true colour experience that stock lacks. I find the default colours are more offset with a yellowish tint though, which looks terrible in my eyes.

So heading says it all, did you have the issue before you installed it and did the ROM fix the issue? I've done the low ISO, I missed around with the settings and it does not fix or make it at all better. I will not settle for a replacement device that is not brand new so I am looking for a software fix. I figure a ROM made from a developer phone would fix it since their software is not affected by this issue. So let me know if you have an answer for this. The key has to be that you had the issue before you installed the ROM. Don't trash the tread with junk or speculations of what might fix it I am only interested in facts at this point I've done all the Google might fix and none did....reply away!

So I read an article on engadget that said the 4.3 update made improvements to the camera in low light settings. I was previously avoiding 4.3/5.5 ROMs because you can't change the lock screen image independently of the home screen. Anyhow, I flashed it last night and have been snapping away with the camera. The pictures seem better.
It's a shame, other than the camera this phone is nearly perfect.

The gsm ones that got the 4.3 update already owners has said it did not fix the low light issue. I doubt HTC has redid the update for tbd Verizon version

I don't know, it seems better but I don't have an objective way to measure it. I know that previously my newborn son's face always looked purple in low light pictures and now his skin looks more true to his natural color.
Also, over exposure doesn't seem as bad.

So when you use a 4.3 sense rom found in the forums, like the one I'm running which is the NuSense 4.3 RC5, it seems like its "fixed" but what actually happens when you put your hand over the lens is that the blue hue or red will show up, but as soon as the phone detects the hue it goes away. It seems to keep doing it in a repetitive pattern.Hue shows up, then goes away, then shows up again, then away, unlike before on 4.2 where if it shows up, it'll stay there.
My guess is that on 4.2.2 like others have said, when the ISO is raised too far, the hue showed up. So really, it seems like HTC just gave the a camera a limit to not raise the ISO too far.
It's "sorta" (not really) fixed. It's a hardware issue that's been somewhat softened by software implementations.
Sounds about exactly right for what can be done. The low-light picture taking is really a hard thing to accomplish, me thinks. I have a Canon DSLR, and fast lenses are expensive (apart from prime lenses), so I'm not surprised that this overprmised technology is not meeting expectation. That said, do people really use their camera phones that heavily? I don't. And it certainly wasn't a feature I considered when buying this phone. Not to knock any enthusiasts, but this defect has made me realize how many folks are satisfied with phone camera fidelity.
For any of you interested in photography. $50 spent on a 50mm prime will blow your brains out, expectation-wise.

I use my camera as a camera not as some sort of blue noise detection meter. If the hue is gone from my pics and the ISO isn't so high that there is a bunch of color noise then I'm happy and for all practical uses I'd say it's pretty well fixed.
I tried putting my hand over the lens, after about 90s it started turning kinda blue around the edges then would fade to black. Better than before.

The problem with it still is that because it fades in and out, if you take the picture at the wrong time, the hue will be in the picture. That means you have to time when to take the picture, which I'm sure to many is absolutely not fixed. It's still got much room to improve.

Over in the regular HTC one forum someone posted a video of a HTC one running kit Kat and the person had the phone laying down on a table. When he got to the camera the screen stayed black and their was no purple haze going in and out. So I hope it does fix it and look forward to a kit Kat Rom for our phones.

Good point. I've been playing with it more today. I have been able to capture most pictures without the hue, but like you said, it kind of fades in and out.

I can tell you this with certainty.. if you tell HTC you need a repair to take care of a camera issue, they will accept it as a legit reason for service. I told them my camera was showing the red/blue and having trouble changing a focal point once it caught one. They tried talking me into waiting for 4.3. I refused. They opened a service order, I sent it out, about a week later I had my same phone back with none of the original problems. I don't know if they swapped out the hardware or what the deal is but when I cover the lens it stays pitch black.
Yes, it hurts being without a phone for a week but it's better than living with a phone that disappoints you for some reason. And especially when that reason can be remedied.

Did you return it to stock before sending it? I could stand being without it for a week to have it fixed

Yes, I did return it to stock before sending it in. I don't know that I needed to, but I wasn't going to take a chance on them refusing to do the work because they didn't like my icons or zooper widgets. =)
I used this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2475216
Just to update this thread I did end up sending my phone to HTC to get repaired it was a one week turn around and came back same phone and fixed. Getting my phone repaired was a big deal since I don't want a CLN or Refrib device. So phone is fixed!

Just to give an update, the new stock 4.4 gpe rom does a better job of preventing the blue/red noise from appearing. When I cover my hand it appears for half a second then is completely black for the rest of the time
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using Tapatalk
I'm a crack flasher so I flash just about every ROM released just to give it a go and I have to have a ROM (4.2.2, 4.3 or 4.4) that has remedied the issue. HTC swears up and down that there is a camera update coming with 4.3 but seeing as how AT&T and Sprint folks said it helped nothing at all in their forums I'm leaning towards a hardware issue. Sucks but we might be stuck with it.

Well unfortunately I can't be without my phone for more than a couple of days. I use it for work and personal. Too bad HTC doesn't have designated repair centers we can take our phones to for repairs of manufacturer defects. HTC should have acknowledged the issue and authorized cell provider stores where the device was purchased to do exchanges after the traditional 30 day exchange was up. I tried to exchange mine at the Verizon store I bought mine at and they wouldn't do it. Said I still had to go through warranty repair. It's understandable on VZW's end bc it isn't their fault HTC shipped jank phones but on the customer service side it makes both companies look bad. Glad yours got fixed though.
