Recommend me some ROMs! [Defy+] - Defy General

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forums but I've been looking into custom ROMs for some time already.
I'd like to tell you that I'm extremely dumb when it comes to things like Kernel, even though I understand a bit of these, I have lots of questions, keeping with that example, if I flash a CM9 Kernel, when I restore an old backup (where I used the Stock phone, for instance), what happens to that Kernel? Is it erased and the Kernel is back to my Stock?
But well, let's get the thread specifically where I want, the custom ROMs.
As previously said, I'm stupidly new to these things, but I decided to gamble on my luck and flash a CM9 Quarx nightly some days ago (can't remember from where I got that one, sorry), but I experienced some problems, like a small lag (yeah, I didn't really like the speed, compared to my stock) and an awful battery problem, where two battery fixes didn't work, and, then, with my heart desolated like a dragon's breath on corn fields, I restored the stock backup I made before doing that.
Ah yeah, I forgot to mention that my Defy+ came with a 2.3.4 version of the OS, just to let you guys know.
So, after that, seeking for more candy to my eyes (Jesus, I loved the settings and stuff from that ROM!), I sailed my boat to the famous WhiteRabbit 1.6, which I must admit, I LOVED it. But as I said, LOV"ED", until I started to face a giant tide... My phone was constantly freezing for long periods (something between 4 and 6 minutes, usually), something of which made my phone quite unusuable and unstable. With tears in my eyes, listening to Beethoven's 1st move of Moonlight Sonata (on the PC...), I decided to restore that old - 2-day old actually - backup to Stock again.
Now I just noticed that I don't like Stock anymore, I can't stand the limitations in comparison to the other two ROMs I used, and I want more! I want some stable ROM, and with "stable" I really mean something stable: a ROM that won't freeze, that has the basic stuff working, a good-looking UI, with fast and smooth scrolling, with a fix for the battery error (if there is the error on the ROM... which I'm quite sure will have), and that gives me more than the Stock would.
I've been looking at that MIUI Pikachu Edition and I really want to try it out, so, should I go on with it? Or do you guys recommend me something else? Another thing that I forgot to say is that I don't really feel like downgrading my Kernel nor putting my phone into a knight's blade way.
Yup, my device is Rooted and has a Boot Manager that I got on some brazillian forums, everything works as I guess they should do.
Sorry for the wall of text and before anything, thanks in advance!

Hey, mate
MIUI Pikachu Edition was the ROM I used absolutely the longest, almost two months without switching to anything else. I must admit that was the time I was constantly satisfied with my phone, but then CM9 became stable and I switched to it and then I simply couldn't go back to any Gingerbread ROM as the new features (mostly the looks ) of ICS were just too good Soon CM10 showed up and I've been with it since the first nightly.
So, yes, I think you should try Pikachu, but for it you need to flash "bl6 Froyo", because it's built for Froyo kernel only. (You cannot flash those flashable kernel zips! They are meant for the standard DEFY only. They are signed as bl5 and if you were to flash one of those, you would end up with a bootloader error, so you would have to flash the 2.3.4 sbf to get your phone back up and running...)
Other than that, CM10 is pretty much the way to go, if you ask me. Yes, it might take some time to load an app or another, but it's the most advanced ROM for the DEFY(+) so far and Jelly Bean really is the best Android version up to date. Quarx's latest nightly is the best version at the moment - the one from two days ago (September 12th). (Paranoid Android and AOKP are both based on Quarx's work, at least our (DEFY) versions)
The third choice for me would be MIUI 4.1, the one based on Jelly Bean. MIUI v4 was a nice step forward when it comes to looks, but it was two steps back when it comes to performance. v4.1 is a much better performer, but work on it has just started, so it'll take a couple of versions to polish it a bit. If you try and like Pikachu I guess you should follow Wajk's WIUI Jelly Bean progress and switch to it when you find it good enough for you
P.S. If it happens that you like Gingerbread more than Jelly Bean for whatever reason and don't like MIUI, FuZZ's CM7 KANG's were always the best for me :good:

I'd say that depends on how you want to handle your phone. If you want to just install a custom ROM once and then stick with it I can recommend CM 7.2, I had that for like half a year and everything worked nicely. It also offers lots of extra features and customization.
If you want the newest Android version I can second the above notion, try CM10 by Quarx. its a great ROM, and even though it is still work in Progress everything you need is working. This might mean that you want to update your ROM every once in a while to get the newest build and features, but this can be done easily through an app from within CM10.
As you have a Defy+ you wont need to flash any Kernel for the above, just pick the correct (Defy+) Version.

use CM10 its stable & works fine on defy+

Because of the controversy and arguments they inevitably generate, "best ROM" threads are prohibited on XDA. Thread closed.

Is my phone rootable ?

Hello,
I just received my HTC Desire, i'm quite happy, he's very nice !
I would like to know if it is possible to upgrade it CM6.
I'm already using a HTC Magic and I really like the battery life in CM6.
I made a picture of the software settings inside so you can see the version i'm running.
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Thanks for your help !
Yes, you can root. I had the exact same version when i rooted.
Use this method: http://android.modaco.com/content/h...e-now-with-hboot-0-80-and-os-to-1-21-support/
Its really easy, just read it carefully and ask any questions if you need.
Good luck
Thanks
I just created the goldcard, now let's see next...
After reading alot of threads and post, I think I'll stay with the stock rom.
It seems that there is no way to backup actual rom and also, no way to have led working.
It seems that CM6 is not yet ready for Bravo(htc desire), so I'll wait for something fully working...

I have everything working with a modified version of DJ DROID, including leds.
You cant backup you current "pre-root" rom because to FULLY backup your rom, you need root. But you can backup contacts, SMS, etc with My Backup Pro, its a 1-time operation.
The roms based on the HTC froyo leak, aka v2.04 + nem radio v5.x are usually pretty fast and stable. Also, current MoDaCo r4 is shaping really well.
What we're still missing is a fast, stable, no bull****, no SENSE, AOSP rom. We have some good ones (like OpenDesire) but they're not exactly there yet. Cyanogen will be great too, if it goes well.
My advice is to root and go with DJ DROID or some other rom based on the HTC leak, they're VERY fast. I cant go back to android v2.1 now that im used to 2.2.

It seems that DJ Droid is very sexy indead
But as you said, I found Sense very nice, but I prefer my stock applications.
My best desktop is CyanogenMod 6 (Android 2.2) when it will be done (but the RC1 is really stable, I use it every day on my Magic), LauncherPro and that's it.
Nothing more, nothing less
Here on the phone, I've installed LauncherPro, removed Sense, and it's already a bit better.
I miss the PicasaSync ! But I love the Dialer, so much more faster and nice than the stock one !

[Q] Kernel help, Sense def. needed

Heres some pretty basic questions for yall:
1)
I need a AOSP kernel. No "Trickling battery" please, I don't want my battery exploding next to my head while I sleep. Needs to be stable. Needs to have HAVS. Needs to be able to run Cyangenmod7. Lastly, it needs to be CMF, or non-brain ****ing whatever.
2)
I need to know what custom ROM i should download. I'm undecided with the whole sense vs. non-sense thing. Partially because I don't know what sense is. (im assuming its some sort of UI?). Something with a different look than stock 2.2 at least. Needs to be stable. Should be Froyo-derived. Needs to be activly upgraded, but not nightly or in beta (with the exception of Cyangenmod7)
In essence, which is the best coustom rom in your opinion?
3)What is Sense? Is it what allows you to drag-n-drop icons?
4) I need a non-AOSP kernel incase the most popular ROM doesn't have support for AOSP.
Thanks.
And I did do a bit of searching in the developers section, but all I found were beta or alpha releases with trickling charges enabled.
I decided on Savaged-Zen Kernel 2.6.37-ck1 kernel and a CM7 nightly build. full-18.. I hope this works >.< All my other attemps have been faulty.

Just a question on rooting + roms (sorry)

hey guys
Now i know you've probably heard this a million times and i do appologise but i'm not risking ANYTHING when it comes to rooting etc as ill only kick myself if i brick my device. So flame away if you feel like it but i'm simply being cautious.
I've looked through numerous guides on rooting and loading rom's but everyone is different so i just want to get it 100% right. Ill start with my phone and what i'm after when i root.
Phone: HTC One X (Tegra 3)
Unlocked on vodafone
android version 4.1.1
htc sense 4+
I'm after a rom which will get rid of most of the bloatware on my phone and give it good battery life in general but improved performance for games when needed. The best stable rom i've come to the conclusion for this is cyanogenmod 10. Is that alright for what i need?
I'd like to tweak the cpu and gpu abit to help games like nova 3 play decently, i heard the main issue is something to do with the cpu govenor? Whats the best way around this?
Bascially i'd like advice on the most simplest way of rooting my phone and then installing cyanogen mod. Do i need kernels or anything else?
Many thanks for your patience :good:
If you go to an AOSP based ROM, like CM, your GPS won't work and your battery is likely to be less good than on JB Sense ROM.
When HTC release the kernel source for JB, this situation will change.
You willl need a kernel that is non standard because you're on hboot 1.36. If I remember correctly, post 9308 of one of the CM ROMs is useful.
Thanks for the reply!
In that case i'd rather keep GPS ability as i use the sat nav alot. Could i use franco's kernel on the stock rom on my phone and just use that? That'll give me the options to tweak i need without changing roms.
No faux kernel won't work on a JB rom, there are no custom kernels yet for JB ! The custom kernels that are available only work on the older ICS roms.
Custom kernels will be available when HTC releases the source code
You can flash an older ICS rom with custom kernel that's no problem. But then you have no JB
Ahhh this is all making sense now
Fair enough, ill leave it all stock until they release the source code. I have to say, this is pretty damn confusing and i'm no amateur when it comes to tech and flashing hardware
Just want my One x to play games smoothly. Pretty pants on nearly everything i've tried so far (shadow gun MP, GTA 3, Nova 3, Battle bears)

[YOUR OPINION] good rom for Xperia S only

--- I did search but due to ever changing builds and time required to test roms for bugs I need up to date info ---
Hi, I got my Xperia S few days ago and I was planning to use Galaxy S+ as a main phone until a decent 4.2.2 rom will come out but now S+ goes to someone else in a family and I'll be left with Xperia S only.
I tried few 4.2.2 roms in a free time but now I need to get my phone up and running for daily use (which requires all or most functionality). As I have not enough time to try and test all of them I kindly ask you to recommend most stable and functional rom. If it based on stock or aosp/cm 4.1.2 I don't care but if I could choose from many I would prefer clean/vanilla/non-themed rom. I don't care about 'extreme' 'ultra' 'blazing fast' too if it comes in exchange for wifi router or bugfree camera. Or should I go back to original .200/.211 firmware?
Please advise as I can't afford time for flashing roms until I find a good one.
Thank you for understanding my situation.
try this
i dont quite know what your looking for but i suggest you look at this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1950706
I suggest cyanogen mod rom or Aokp for no bugs, if not that FLASH a stock rom and wait for the next update for the XS that "Tackles all the bugs"
I'd say go for stock based ROM's which have small app, walkman, BE and where everything works... This is my favourite one
link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2266993
If you really want vanilla android, go for PAC ROM. It combines features from Paranoid Android, CM and AOKP, plus most of it works, but it doesn't have a great battery life...
I do know about this rom list and I would test them all but as I said I have no time for that and I need -fully- working and solid rom without force closes, obvious bugs etc. as soon as possible for everyday work.
Someone recommended eXistenZ rom before and I will try that for next couple of days and if that will be a disappointment I will roll back to stock .200 until further development results.
I tried PAC 4.2.2 and it's really messed up/not ready for daily use. I have a bad feeling about roms that use various sources stitched up together. On previous phones I only liked pure AOSP or CM as they were most solid.
Please add more opinions or tell me that something I'm looking for does not exist yet I had been waiting for fully working roms for a long time before. Let's hope it's a different story with this device
stock will always be the most stable since it has all official drivers
now, if you wanna ask about which custom rom is better, you'll always receive a biased opinion due to user preferences..just go ahead and flash one so you'll get a feel for them
my search for good custom rom comes from experience with Samsung Galaxy S+ where stock roms are garbage, bloated, ugly and bugged even more than stock .200 for Xperia S but after some waiting smart devs came up with 99% perfect 4.0.4 and 4.2.2 based on AOSP and CM - without official support from those projects.
I was hoping that development for Xperia S will be more advanced since it's more mainstream phone rather than 'let's give original Samsung S some experimental hardware upgrades and leave it behind because we have more popular phones to worry about'. I'm sure it's just a matter of time (and just another driver fix from Sony) when our devs will release perfect working rom.

Are android custom roms still worth it?

Dear folks,
a few months ago I brought my Nexus 5x and consigering that I was using my Samsung Galaxy S3 before a new world opened for me instantly. Now I have the Android version on my phone that is current right now actually. I have a clean user interface to interact with and the most satisfying point is that I am not forced to use my phone with such an amount of bloatware as it was the case with samsung.
In the past I used my GS3 only with custom roms like cynaogenmod (R.I.P.) because of this ugly and laggy touchwiz. With this way I was able to consume the new android versions aswell and profit from the pure stock android experience I newer was allowed to consume with samsungs software trash.
Now I owned my N5x and things changed. Now it is self-evident, that I can experience stock android. My device doesn't lag with any task anymmore and I got not too much unnecessary apps preinstalled. Well I rooted my device and finally got the best android experience since I use smartphones. No more wishes unfulfilled.
That got me thinking...
I really loved the fact, that I was able to flash any rom on my previous phone that I wanted to and I was not willing to use my phone without these. But now when I got my nexus I do not see the advantages of custom roms anymore.
I do not need to flash a custom rom to get stock android.
I do not need to flash a custom rom to get the newest android version. The opposite is even the case since the nexus devices get every update first.
Thank to the community behind the nexus series even the additional features of some custom roms aren't an argument anymore considering the fact, that most features came out as a flashable zip file for the stock roms or I use substratum or xposed (when it finally arrives in nougat  ).
So I considered wether I should give lineage OS for the N5x a try or not and I do not see the point why I should flash it. I would not get anything in addition, that I miss now I guess.
So what du you think, guys? Are android custom roms still worth it? Why should I flash a custom rom? Why do you do it? Let me know in the comments.
If you are happy with stock, why change it??
I use custom ROM just for ease of theming. And some shuttle customisations.
Lineage OS does not include theming, so i won't go for it. If you want to experiment, try something with OMS7 theming baked in. My daily driver is ABC ROM.
I used the stock ROM for a very long time, and was very happy with it. In fact, switching to a custom ROM saw very little difference, esp in look/feel of the OS. You are absolutely right that the main reasons for a custom ROM are negated by the fact that we're running a stock android that gets updated very frequently.
That said, I will say that after using a custom ROM/kernel, I don't really want to go back to stock. I could if I need to, and would work fine, but there are a number of small things that I am using that I really like. I get MUCH better battery life on a rooted ROM with kernel. I can set up custom profiles for doing what I need to do, when I need to do it. Some of the Magisk camera modules for these are great, and recording video is much better (60fps with EIS). I also don't like having my /data encrypted, as I feel like it slows the phone down for no reason.
So yeah, stock is fantastic, but there are small things that do make it worth it.

1st mate welcome to stock community of android, that happen when you buy a nexus(pixel now) , stock rom is perfect!! i change time to time roms, now i use stock/lockbooloader. there 2 reasons, well if you like more..... the are 2 tipes of ppl...
lets start form the basic.
1) why you pick a nexus? the most classic answer to this is.... cose i like the stock experience(true that is great) and cose is the only devices that take 1st and fastest updates for 2 years(true that too )
2) and now comes the question. sould i root my nexus? and why i do this, the phone feels great, is fast and not lag at all.
the answer to this is cose with an unlockbootloader a new world opens to custom roms,kernels,mods/apks/themes. yes the icons and feels is more or less the same... but is not the same 100%!!
so in your case think what realy you want from a custom rom before you unlock the bootloader, the reason that some times i root my nexus is 3....1)cose i like to have a tone of customaze in settings/nav bars/themes etc 2) i like the daily or weekly updates God i love the icon in notification bar when i see it LOL.. 2)and finally some better battery life with a custom kernel!!
so next time think what you want from a custom rom!!
i have test a lot of them!!
if you like customized settings etc LOS(lineage os) is not good! los is stable/daily rom with daily updates/support with some extras in settings but not big deal, is close to stock when it comes to customized!!
full customazed roms and good for daily use is DIRTY UNICORNS D.U // RESURACTION REMIX A.K.A RR // TESLA,VALIDUS ROMS // BLISS ROM // AND OFC PURE NEXUS P.N
but other roms like android ice cold project a.k.a A.I.C.P and Mokee rom is good fast or daily support updates.
p.s sry for my bad english!! i hope to help you!

You cant use custom kernel on stock rom? or mods like the 60 fps recording? I thought you could
I always use custom roms because of the personalization. Not themes but features, some of them are great. Also updating is so easy just download zip and flash from recovery.
Stock rom OTAs encrypt data and install stock recovery and I dont like that, also It is said custom roms are smoother. I still have to try pixel rom though, which is based on stock rom
I wrote this question for my pixel last week. It's probably bc I've been flashing for a long time but it's nice when things work correctly which sometimes doesn't happen with custom ROMs. For me I've been happy with stock but with a custom kernel and root. I still use root and a customer kernel cleans up the performance but stock rom is good for me.

I think you mis-read what I meant earlier, or (more probably) I wasn't clear. When I meant "stock", I meant 100% stock, meaning stock ROM, stock kernel, locked bootloader, no root, etc.
If you used a stock ROM with a custom kernel and Magisk, you could get a lot of those same things, I'm sure. There are still small reasons why I like Pure Nexus ROM, tho, like the battery bar tweaks (removing the icon and having a thin bar on the top), night mode, the Pixel launcher, etc. Plus, I don't have to have the FULL gapps suite, I can only have what I want installed.

Coming from flashing ROMs and kernels on an HTC EVO, Galaxy S2, S3, and S5, it was nice to finally be on stock and not feel the need to do it anymore. I was going to after a few months but updates really improved the experience for me compared to it's original release.

I won't buy a phone that doesn't have the ability to run custom roms. Particularly, CM / Lineage. So for example, the Pixel is out.
1. I get to choose what starts up with during boot up.
2. I get to stop unnecessary apps from running in the background. Guess what I don't want an app running if I don't have it open. Turns out my wife doesn't either for most of her apps. Do you need apps chew through mobile data or tracking your every move even though you don't have them open?
3. I block many apps from data / wifi entirely. They can't load junk like ads, phone home etc.
4. I easily block various applications from my data, as needed. A game does not need access to my contacts, etc.
5. There is still a lot of customization that can be done in the custom roms in regards to layout and such that is not in stock roms.
I realize that some of those things can be done in the stock ROM once you are rooted, or there are work around ways to do sort of do these in other ways without root, however many those are just some of the things I can list off the top of my head that you can only sort of do or only partially do in stock form.
(It's been a long time since I've run a stock ROM, so let me know if it's changed, I could be off base?)
We're not talking kernels, but once you starting tweaking the kernel, plus keep all the crap from running in the background you can get decent battery life out of this phone.
