Sensless or Stock Android

Hey guys I have been doing quite a bit of searching through the forums and still have a couple questions about custom roms and rooting. Forgive the noobness but the droid incredible is my first android device and I only recently got it.
1. My first question is what is the simplest way (rom + root I assume) to get a stock version of android on my incredible? Also what rom would you recommend (I have seen a pretty big list but know nothing about them)?
2. What is the difference, if any, between a kernel and a rom? Ive seen both words used a lot and have seen kernels that are stock and roms that are as well. Which would I use between the two?
I know these questions may be dumb but I have been searching for a couple days and have gone through hundreds of threads trying to find the definitive answer (there were some benefits though, I use launcher pro and the droid x's keyboard now) any help would be appreciated.

1. You are right in assuming that the quickest (and only) way to get a stock version of Android on your phone is to root your phone and install a custom recovery that will allow you to flash a rom. It is not really possible for me to recommend a rom because rom's are all about personal preference and my preference may be different from yours. That being said, if you are interested in stock Android, check out Cyanogenmod. The biggest thing right now is that for the Incredible, Cyanogenmod is the only true stock Android that is compiled from AOSP (Android Open Source Project) however it is still in its early stages for our device, so it's still buggy. The other roms are modified versions of our stock sense rom, so some of the roms are modified to have the bulkier parts of of the Sense UI removed, but it is still a Sense rom.
2. I'm not going to profess to be extremely in the know about kernels, but a kernel is the go-between for the hardware and the os/applications. If you want to learn more about kernels, you can read the wikipedia page about kernels found here. Basically what you need to know is that the rom is the operating system, so if you wanted to change the OS such as from Sense to Vanilla Android, you would flash a rom. If you wanted to change the way the system runs, such as if you want your processor to be overclocked or undervolted, you would flash a kernel.

[Q] Need help picking a kernel

Ok so I am new to the droid Incredible and as you can kind of tell I am coming from the HTC Hero by sprint. I looked around but nothing really helped me making a decision so now I am asking you! I am currently running the newest Synergy ROM which is android 2.3.3 and I haven't seen any gingerbread Kernels, just froyo. What kernel would you recommend for battery life because I am used to having atleast 2 days but I was running cm7 but I missed sense way too much lol

Unfortunately there are no options for custom sense GB kernels aside from what the rom comes with.

ok so that's why I could not find any, is there one in the works though?

That'll be a possibility when the official GB version source code is released, which will be after we would receive the OTA.

I too need help picking a Kernal. I am totally new to this Rom thing but luckly was able to root & get SkyRaider 4.2 running on my Droid Inc. on my first go with no trouble.
So what I'm mainly looking for is to get:
1. Better battery life
2. To overclock cpu
(If you have any other tips for me on getting the most out of my phone, they would be MUCH appreciated.)
So I've been thinking of flashing the Incredikernal 2.632. But I know that this new version of SkyRaider was just updated or released not too long ago. Will this effect my decision? Is the Incredikernal I want even compatible with my current SkyRaider rom? Or should I just stick with what I have? Thanks in advance.

I'd recommended trying incredikernel, you're not gonna hurt anything flashing kernels so there's nothing to lose and you very well may see improvements in performance and battery life. Just make sure you get the incredikernel for sense from 12/23. Other options to look into are heyitslou and ziggys.

I'm new to both the XDA forums and flashing Android although I've been a 'regular' Linux user since '96. I've owned Zaurii etc so I'm not scared of the terminal, compilation etc but I don't know much about Android and its various spin-off ROM/distros. I own a UK, unlocked Xperia Play r800i thats still running stock .42 which I had to factory reset over xmas as it was misbehaving and now its time to get it updated or switch ROM but I don't know if I'm best sticking with the latest stock or going with an alternate ROM?
I'm not really a gamer and the xperia pad is really just a novelty to me that I use to show off to gamers with although I think it'd be a shame if I could no longer use the pad and sneak the odd N64, PSX or MAME game in so I'd prefer that to work. What I do definitely need to work are the standard phone functions, the camera and GPS/sat nav. Apart from that I want stability, decent battery life and speed like everyone else. I was planning on sticking with GB and stock or maybe a custom stock unless there are real gains in stability or battery life to be had from updating to ICS or JB.
I've wasted a few days now trying to use SE's update service and PC companion under XP, 7 and OSX on different machines and with different USB chipsets and with different cables and it didn't work under any config! This is why I said I'd never buy another SONY product is it? Actually it was when they stole Linux from the PS3 users who took advantage of that feature, maybe even bought it especially for that but thats another story! Anyway, because of this I have not been able to download the latest stock ROM which my phone says is now up to .79 but I've read .84 is out now too?
Does anyone have a working link for a .79 (or .84) FTF file? I have only been able to find .42 and .62 stock FTFs after spending most of the day yesterday looking. Otherwise, maybe I'd be better off with a custom ROM? If so, which one and why? There are lists of r800 compat roms in both a couple of sticky threads in these XDA Xperia Play forums and on the XDA r800 wiki page but none of these lists include any notes or recommendations.
I'm hoping some kind soul will take pity on my Android n00b ass and spare me days or weeks of flashing roms and trawling these forums by answering as many of my questions as they can?

I dont have the ftf's but in your choice with ROMs, seen as u want something fast but still able to play emulators id recommend JB. ICS was ok probably CM9 & AOKP where the 2 ROMs I used. But you will need to flash farenheits touchpad fix.
Theres about 6 ROMs at the moment for JB. I use my own obviously which is PACman (mix of cm9, aokp,paranoid android and miui) but with the choice of multibooting I also have cm9 & AOKP in different slots which are accesible to boot through recovery at anytime. Also I added farenheiths touchoad fix into PACman source so no need to flash anything to fix it.
Choice is yours at the end of the day, but I find JB alot faster / smoother then ICS.

Last time I was looking into roms for my xperia the consensus seemed to be to avoid ICS or JB if you wanted a stable and fully working phone but it sounds like times have changed and its good to hear that my joypad should work under JB!
I like the sound of your rom wedgess so I hope to try that soon. I don't see any real reason to try any ICS roms but I'd still like some links to the latest stock ftfs and it'd be good to know what the best stock based rom is too as thats another thing I'd like to try. From these two responses though its sounding like there isn't much interest in GB roms any more?

Ye JB was very unstable back when it first came out. But I got camera working,CosmicDan got proximity sensors fixed and Farenheits touchpad fix so it all became better. Personally I stay away from ICS due to the fact of it been a RAM hogger. JB seems to deal with it alot better.
For both my own JB kernel and CosmicDans JB kernel you will need to flash the ftf in our kernel threads OP. Reason being they both use custom partitions which give 610mb in internal storage. In this ftf vendor partitions are unlocked. In other ftfs partitions are locked beside the r800x.
Id say try them out. Maybe take advantage of the multiboot feature which will alow u to boot between JB and ICS (cm9 based roms only). I havent used it personally but if I was to go back to ICS it would be either Sechkos port of ICS pureness or CosmicDans MIUI australia.

Is for the stability that im not using JB. The Stock based ROM that I mention later is the best that you can get with ICS. I'm using it with Lupus Kernel and overclocked to 1.2 (min 460) and also I erase many stuff with Link2SD because there are many garbage you really don't need. And I've got a great experience with this ROM. Give a try if you want, I recommend it.

- PACman ROM v5 thread here
You will need to flash this stock ftf first to use the kernels as they have vendor unlocked partitions
Theres also a link in PAC thread to LuPuS-v7 kernel, if you want to read up a bit on multiboot(recommended) or there is this great guide by fma
Put the PAC-v5.zip onto sdcard. LuPuS-v7 is inside the PAC ROM's .zip just extract the kernel.img from the PAC-v5.zip and flash the kernel.img in flashtool via fastboot mode.

Hello again guys,
I sucessfully rooted my phone but now I have a problem. I have read through alot of forums and sites and I guess the next logical step is to get a new rom and kernel. Now I have done alot of reading about all this but I'm getting quite confused between the pair. From my understanding the kernel controls all the complex stuff like making your phone run faster/slower and increasing/decreasing battery life.... I'm stumped at what a rom is,it's like, the operating system but custom ones are more streamlined?
So what I'm asking for is a little information and some suggestions of what I should put onto my phone, I read something about a smartassv2 which is supposed to keep the phone more balanced, now im sure if it is a kernel or a governor?
Any help would be apprciated.

Have you put cwm or different recovery on your phone yet. Also do you have the CDMA or gsm version

Yeah, the utility I used to root it also installed cwm, I checked it out and did a backup which should be on my SD card now.
beleive it's gsm, it has a sim card and is on T-mobile.

Ive just installed link2sd and partitioned my sd card, was able to move over a game that I couldnt originally get over to the sd card, saving a bit of space.
Also with link2sd I was able to delete preinstalled bloat like twitter, friendstream, news, weather, stocks, etc.
So far a good day

smartassv2 is governer you can use cfq scheduler with it.
about suggestions:
after rooting you have two options:
use cyanogenmod roms:
cm9.1/cm10
(original modpunk cm9.1 ,speed droid,jelly king,miui etc)
use stock sense roms:
(wildchild etc,sense 3.5 etc)
these all are main roms after there are many variations like pacman rom,aokp build cm9 but they are not much stable at this time so.

Sorry to be a pain can you give me a little info about the listed roms? You put cm9.1/cm10 then the others in brackets, are they just like the same roms but with slight differences or is cynaogenmod a kinda name for those type of roms?
EDIT: Just looked up CyanogenMod.org, doesnt show that it supports HTC Wildfire S.

official cyanogenmod isn't support wildfire s.so dev made here unofficial cynogenmod which support cm9.1 and cm10 with some bugs.

Personal oppinion
When I rooted my wildfire s I was exactly like you. I started wondering what I should do or where I could find it.
After testing a few roms I will tell you what worked for me: Test different roms till you find the one that suits you.
Anyway, I'll tell you my advice:
- WildJOY joyOS First rom I tested. No bugs found.
- Modpunk's CM10 As far as I've read the rom every one uses as the base for their own ones.
- JellyKing This is the one I'm using right now. Active development and really smooth.

I flashed my phone with Jelly King V2.0 4 days back. Its working very smoothly.
You get 69 MB of internal space to install things.
Panorma mode in camera etc. Try it. you'll love it.

I have that rom without that kernel and the only bug I've found for the moment is the 3G connection one. However Kantry123 is working hard on it.

I was v.happy with v1.3 dedoxed i had no problem with it till yesterday started to have problem with viber ''NO SOUND'' , skype signing out when i try to make a skype phone call.. i tried to many things re-flashing the Room without wiping data factory sittings No backup lool so today i flashed the V2.0 with full wipe but its kinda lagy!! not smooth like the older one !! Kantry 123 made amazing job i really appreciate his hard work :good:

I don't find it that laggy as you say. Maybe it's because i don't spect too much from my little device. If i were you i'd try the kernel to test if it goes smoother or not.

like i said v1.3 the best Rom i ever used better than any custom Room Running 4.1.2.. okay please let me know if v2 kernel is any better than newest one... Viber still having problem with communication !! i can`t hear anything am i the only one who have problem with viber !!

[Q] Just want a stable phone, thats all...

Hi guys, I am a BASIC android user with BASIC phone needs. Unfortunately I own a HTC Desire Z with Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread) and the very crapy HTC Sense 2.1 thats keeps on slowing down the phone and mostly rendering it beyond the point of regular usage.
I want the cleanest possible, fully functioning Android version available, like on Nexus phones. Just a plain, simple, clean and basic Android version. No need for overclocking, Sense crap, MIUI interfaces or other spectaculair may-work-may-not-work-brick-my-phone stuff, just a simple working smartphone, you can call with, send text messages with, Viber, Skype or Whatsapp with. You know, kinda like old people do with the phone
So 2 questions:
1. Which version would you guys recommend as being the cleanest one available on the forum?
2. How on earth do I get there? I have basic/bit advanced knowledge about rooting phones, Kernels, radio versions, etc, but this HTC phone is beyond me. Should I first root it, then CID Unlock/ s-Off it, do I first have to downgrade it to Froyo, etc etc etc. I know the easiest answer is RTFM, or use the search function on this forum first, but with my basic knowledge I cant seem to figure it out with the tons and tons of information thats out there on the forum.
So please, a few pointers, short first-this-then-that guidelines, and I'm sure I will get there.

Both are very stable. Very fast. No problem at all.
But I have to say, these time, most of recent roms are pretty reliable.

As far as I understand, this release is based on a CM7 Rom, with added features? And do I only need the ILWT CM7 Kernel, or also the ILWT Deamon? What is a Deamon???!?? and why would I need it? Found a downgrade/upgrade guide from Strawmetal, hopefully it won't brick my phone and I will be able to upgrade to a normal workeable ROM.
Again, many many thanks, and tonight I will either have a useless paper weight, or a normally functioning phone

The deamon allow you to control overclocking, voltage, I/O, governors.
Witch you dont need, if you dont want to play with it.
i.e mimicry's already set to 1000 mhz cpu. You dont need to touch anything if you're satisfied with this cpu speed.
It's hard to find a complete guide for newbes. Back in years, I remember that I had to look at multiple thread to be sure how to root/backup/flash and make sure not to brick.

The major difference between the two (I was using Mimicry myself for the longest time, but I'm currently testing the Flinny Jellybean build) is one is Gingerbread (CM7) and the other is Ice cream sandwich. So if you're find with android OS 2.3, you will for the most part have the most compatibility with the phone's hardware (since all the drivers are avail), and will run better on the phone. But Mimicry will give you the features of ICS (4.0.x), but may lack in some areas like camera capabilities with 3rd party apps such as instagram (which is fixed in the jellybean rom I'm currently using).
But as a "basic" user, I think sticking with gingerbread will do you just fine.

I personally found this guide most useful and very easy to follow. The only problem might be that it needs adb and the respective drivers, but installing it should not be too difficult.
My favourite ROM, when it comes to speed and stability, is the "cm-7.2.0-vision.zip" found here. It might have some extras, but compared to everything else I tried (and I tried a lot), it worked like a charm.

I had some difficulties getting there ( a faulty PC10IMG file, a bootloop after finally flasing the CM zip that seemed endless, a bootloader that gave up on me, etc), but learned a lot along the way. My conclusion: as enthusiastic and capable all the people at XDA are, nothing beats the official manufacterers release of the software. Sure, here and there also original roms have glitches and FC's, but basically everything works the way it should work, all the drivers are present and mostly updated. So my motto is: if it aint broken, dont mess with it

The cyanogenmod wiki instructions are easier to follow but it looks like they stopped developing at gingerbread which I already have. What I did was get the unlock code from HTC and then used busybox to install su for root access.
If CyanogenMod ever comes out with a more current version, I may give it a try but I am guessing they are only going to develop for the latest phones.

I used a mix of guides, basically the procedure was: downgrade to Froyo, unlocked and temporarly rooted (S-Off), got it permanent rooted, and then installed CM 7.2.0
Thats all
