Is my phone rootable ? - Desire General

Hello,
I just received my HTC Desire, i'm quite happy, he's very nice !
I would like to know if it is possible to upgrade it CM6.
I'm already using a HTC Magic and I really like the battery life in CM6.
I made a picture of the software settings inside so you can see the version i'm running.
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Thanks for your help !

Yes, you can root. I had the exact same version when i rooted.
Use this method: http://android.modaco.com/content/h...e-now-with-hboot-0-80-and-os-to-1-21-support/
Its really easy, just read it carefully and ask any questions if you need.
Good luck

Thanks
I just created the goldcard, now let's see next...

After reading alot of threads and post, I think I'll stay with the stock rom.
It seems that there is no way to backup actual rom and also, no way to have led working.
It seems that CM6 is not yet ready for Bravo(htc desire), so I'll wait for something fully working...

I have everything working with a modified version of DJ DROID, including leds.
You cant backup you current "pre-root" rom because to FULLY backup your rom, you need root. But you can backup contacts, SMS, etc with My Backup Pro, its a 1-time operation.
The roms based on the HTC froyo leak, aka v2.04 + nem radio v5.x are usually pretty fast and stable. Also, current MoDaCo r4 is shaping really well.
What we're still missing is a fast, stable, no bull****, no SENSE, AOSP rom. We have some good ones (like OpenDesire) but they're not exactly there yet. Cyanogen will be great too, if it goes well.
My advice is to root and go with DJ DROID or some other rom based on the HTC leak, they're VERY fast. I cant go back to android v2.1 now that im used to 2.2.

It seems that DJ Droid is very sexy indead
But as you said, I found Sense very nice, but I prefer my stock applications.
My best desktop is CyanogenMod 6 (Android 2.2) when it will be done (but the RC1 is really stable, I use it every day on my Magic), LauncherPro and that's it.
Nothing more, nothing less
Here on the phone, I've installed LauncherPro, removed Sense, and it's already a bit better.
I miss the PicasaSync ! But I love the Dialer, so much more faster and nice than the stock one !

[Q] Poll - ROMS

Ok peeps! It's time someone stepped up and posted a thread that addresses the most critical of (the technically inclined) humanity's issues:
ROMS - From the bunch out there, which one is your favorite and why?
I'll start this poll by posting the ones available in the Android Development forum. If none apply, please post what you are using and why.
Not sure if we can change polls after they started so probably can't add any options after the initial post, but suggestions might make it into a next edition. For now I'll post 20 ROMS
Let's get our 'droid on people!
Bumping back to top so more people can see the poll. Would be great if some admin could sticky this poll for the duration so we could get more participants and maybe get a better sense of what the community is doing / using.
Been trying out a few ROMs lately, though currently happy with Froyo DeLite, it's pretty much the stock Froyo release by HTC just with root and no new hboot, just what i was looking for.
I'm running this one: [ROM] Official 2.2, with: busybox, old A2SD+, OpenVPN (TUN), EXT4 support, 802.11N by ieftm. Which one is it in your list?

LOL... When preparing this poll I had counted 20 ROMs. When I finished filling out the forms, I had 19 and an open space and couldn't figure out what was missing so I used the 20th spot and filled it in with "others". Guess now I know which one I forgot
Just vote for others and leave your comment. Thanks for commenting and sorry to all that I messed this up by forgetting that ROM

Which ROM did you most like up till now?
Personaly, so far I have to say I liked LeeDroid Mod and Cyanogen. If I had to choose I would be hard pressed. But despite that I am still stuck on a Rooted Official HTC Android 2.2 (FroYo).
For me, I love the purity and simplicity of a non-sense ui. Hence my passion for Cyanogen (amongst the non-sense mods). But I must confess that I miss Friendstream, and clock / weather widget and animations, and also the HTC calendar. This brings me back to LeeDroid. If I were somehow able to get these 3 things on a Cyanogen Mod, I'd be in trouble because then I'd have to choose one of them !
Neophyte
I like Sense. It's the only phone skin I've come across that I think adds something to the phone UI.
I've tried Dj Droid and Leedroid, and all the Neophyte ROMs. I've stuck with the latter as they're really quick, seem totally stable and basically I can't find anything wrong with them!

I think there are 2 NeoPhyTe ROMs out there, right? NexTSense and NeoPhyTe ROM. Which one do you prefer?
I'm confused between so many ROMs and so many changes. What I want is one rooted but first of all STABLE (without any bugs) ROM. I don't need nothing special added or removed from official one.
If someone can suggest the one - I would be thankfull.
Me too which one, and especially how to ROOT for lamers like us?

Please note this isn't a poll to figure out which ROM is king! No, it's just intended to give us a sense of what's going on in the community and what people like and are looking for so that hopefully, new developers can take that info and use it, either tweaking their existing ROM, or making new ones based on the ones people most like, or even creating something that is 180º different and goes in another direction.

Same as above for the first part of your post. Check "unrevoked" for the rest.
I've always had Modaco roms for my Android handsets (T-Mobile Pulse, HTC Hero & then Desire). They have always been extremely stable. For a close-to-stock 2.1 Sense (Eclair) ROM, Modaco r3.1 was the best for me!
I tried LeeDroid Mod 1.3a (to try out Froyo) and haven't looked back. I've decided not to update to any of the other versions (1.5, 1.6, 1.7 etc) as everything works perfectly for me!
Unless there's a significant reason to update (specifically battery life), then I'm staying on LeeDroid 1.3a.

really that good?
yeah man, that rom rox
the most stock, complete, functional rooted rom i've encountered so far.
[ROM] Official 2.2, with: busybox, old A2SD+, OpenVPN (TUN), EXT4 support, 802.11N
I have tried a lot of them and now I´m using Defrost 2.5a, I know it´s not based on 2.09 Froyo but I want to try and leave Sense Ui once and for all.
Qudrant just got me 1441 and Linpack around 39-40 all the time.
I´m gonna install that Launcher Pro Plus and Beautiful Widgets for the weather and such.
If I wanted to go back to Sense, I would choose my fellow spaniard Neophyte´s 1.4a or 2.1b (both rock).
Cheers

Which froyo sense ROM do you use?

I know, such a question is asked every day but since the froyo OTA was released many roms changed completly and many new roms were created, too.
Unfortunally I dont have the time to test all of them, so I just wanted to ask for your suggestions
Which froyo-sense-rom do you use and is it worth flashing?
I have to say that I really haven't used any other custom ROM, but I've stuck with LeeDroid too. I'm currently using 1.6a as it has been perfectly stable with lots of nice apps not included in other ROM's. I love it also because it's updated almost daily. I'm still using 1.6a since 1.7 is based on the official HTC Froyo ROM and it's not as stable yet. I'm waiting until it's as flawless as 1.6a and upgrading then
on stock froyo 2.2 rooted (hboot .80) cause I can't be flashing custom roms for fixes daily. Need a stable (doesn't have be super speedy) rom with froyo and rooted for everyday use!

Exactly the same for me atm - would like to have a daily useable rom which is built from the ota. Maybe I will give 1.7b a try
From the beginning I've only wanted root access with the stock HTC ROMs as my daily use. I rarely flash additions and whatever I do is for long term use. I don't have time for problems and fussing around with new variables, bugs and shortcomings. Stock MFG ROM releases generally have excellency in stability, consistency, integrity and reliability which is exactly what I'm after. So I'm using the rooted HTC 2.2 ROM. Every mod or hack I needed is working on it. Battery life is still excellent. I couldn't be happier.

im using nextsence, i usually prefer stock roms over custom roms but this one is sweet, its like the stock rom but with a cool theme
I'm currently using the LeeDroid 1.7 Froyo ROM. Its working a treat for me at the moment, not crashes or stability issues, my only concern is that when having to reflash ROM's all the time that I will keep losing my apps. Though i'm told this is not the case if you use A2SD/A2SD+
I tried flashing 1.7b, but got no APN and couldnt add them manually. So i switched back to 1.6a

I really love the sense widgets - and I can't find good replacements for them in the market
Only one choice imo if you want a stable & fast Froyo Sense. Neophyte 1.6.
Seriously - I've tried nearly every Rom including LeeDroid and this one is so much better than all of them.
atm I'm using Leedroid 1.8.
Really stable Rom - didnt see any bugs yet...

What rom do you use at the moment and why?

We have got many good developers here working on different ROMS.
I just would like to know what ROM are you all using at the moment and why.
I used most of the time Sense rom from Leedroid. I love his boot image and the fact it is sense rom. I tried Sense HD and I like it, but until the camera works is no good for me for day to day use. Last couple of days I use MIUI and it is really different but nice (like iphone OS but on better device)
I've used Defrost, Opendesire, Villainrom, SupervillainHD and Oxygen. Like the ASOP roms the best, as they are the fastest, allow me to choose the addons more (not 3 or more programs for one task, if i don't want to use Sense apps), and are more versatily (at least, appear to me to be so).
Moved to general as this is in no way pertaining to ROM development.
fair enough. I just tought the poll might help people to choose a rom to use/try.
I am using pinky desire classsic at the moment .
CM 6.1 RC - cause simply I hate to update alot. I'm considering it the latest satisfying my needs!
using pays sense rom
tried auraxtsense rom, but reverted back to pays
it has the best dialer i have seen in a rom.
would like to try sense HD, but wont until they fix the camera

By sense rom he probably mean roms like leedroid etc.
On that assumption I voted stock as I'm running the stock 2.29.405.2 WWE ROM
Why? As it does all I need it to
OpenDesire
I went from stock ROM to OpenDesire 4.0.36. I do not miss Sense at all and BT keyboard now works (why, HTC, oh why?). The only thing I miss from Sense is the weather widget.
Too bad OpenDesire will not be updated any longer as from the final 4.1 version. I hope it gets Gingerbread (2.3) in the final build.
Leedroid, because it has apps2sd by default and is pretty clean and has some other nice little touches (but still pretty close to stock) like a transparent notification drawer
I tried all rom types, but in the end I return to Sense. People who say AOSP or Cyanogen are faster have clearly never used a sense rom. It's at least on par and scrolling is smoother.

I like sense, and I wanted something relatively close to stock but with A2SD and a few other bits and pieces.

[Q] Official 2.3 vs Cyanogenmod

I am waiting for the official 2.3 update these days, just as everybody else.
But I am beginning to doubt that it will make me happy. Sounds like I will have even less memory for apps and such. I am curious to see Sense 2.1 on the Desire, so maybe I'll try it out.
But: Sense (at least the current Sense on the current official 2.2 release), isn't really very important for me. Performance, available memory, battery life and stability is more important to me. Customizability and the ability to run apps that require root (I have never rooted my phone before) might be a nice side benefit too.
So should I wait for the official 2.3 or just go with cyanogenmod now?
What will Sense 2.1 give me?
What will the official 2.3 update give me that current cyanogenmod won't?
How long until a cyanogenmod based on the official 2.3 is released?
Can I take a full snapshot backup of my phone in it's current state and always be able to restore it, ROM, installed apps, settings, contacts and what not? Would be nice before I mess with cyanogenmod. I want to be able to go back to my current state, if possible.
If I install the official 2.3 (when it is released) will I then be able to downgrade easily to my current ROM and state? Will I be able to install cyanogenmod if I have official 2.3?
Thanks

Yes, it's much faster than any Sense-based ROM. And you also get the latest Android available (at the moment: GRJ90 - I've heard it's 2.3.5 with nightlies).
Keep in mind though that Cyanogen is pure Android (with many mods and tweaks), so it'll look much different than official ROM.
You know 2.3 won't be available on HTC Desire, just Desire HD and Z. You shouldn't wait anymore
CyanogenMod is very fast, very stable and very awesome
I'm using CM7.1 and its running perfectly
I still don't understand why people are so in love with Sense, it clogs up your phone and is sluggish.
I've never looked back since going with CyanogenMod, its faster, more flexible, stable, customizable
Sent from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App
Hi,
first of all, you can simply root your phone, you can only benefit.
After that you have rooted your phone you have the ability to do a complete screenshot of your rom(nandroid backup) and roll it back whenever you want.
So with a done nandroid backup, you can simply try most of the roms!
But i would suggest that you wait a few days after the release of the 2.3 update, so the devs can cook their roms.
So AOSP(Cyanogenmod) vs Sense
i am not very familiar with cyanogenmod but i will probably choose it one day (next android version)
they build many great features in their rom and its abolutly worth trying!
And i think with a little search affort you can find most of the Sense Features!
but i am with Sense Roms, but will change if they get too outdated!
A big reason to stay with Sense is Htc Sync (Outlook Cal Sync), i have tried MyPhoneExplorer but it isnt the same.
Also the whole Social thing is so nice integratet, you can share from everywhere(website, sms,...) things with others, with a nice shortcut.
Also the camera app is very nice(dont know the current from cyanogen) but i have the sense3 cam on my mobile and its brilliant
But mostly i think its a look/feel thing
I remember some situations where i thought a aosp would be nice but most of the time i am good with sense
My conclusion is if you want a complete solution stay with sense, if you want to change and customize everything go with cyanogen
Edith: After trying Cyanogen Nightly#147 for a few hours, i saw what i miss in (stock) cyanogenmod:
First minor downside is the need for bluetooth when using the fm-radio.
Ok now i started the Camera to see whats up here, and the aosp camera is quite good,
focus solution could be better and the app is ugly as hell but thats not important.
But what for me is important is a good Calendar Solution, and here sucks Stock Android!
No Offline Calendar, you need a Google or Exch.-Acc to open the app, also its ugly and i dislike it.

Recommend me some ROMs! [Defy+]

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forums but I've been looking into custom ROMs for some time already.
I'd like to tell you that I'm extremely dumb when it comes to things like Kernel, even though I understand a bit of these, I have lots of questions, keeping with that example, if I flash a CM9 Kernel, when I restore an old backup (where I used the Stock phone, for instance), what happens to that Kernel? Is it erased and the Kernel is back to my Stock?
But well, let's get the thread specifically where I want, the custom ROMs.
As previously said, I'm stupidly new to these things, but I decided to gamble on my luck and flash a CM9 Quarx nightly some days ago (can't remember from where I got that one, sorry), but I experienced some problems, like a small lag (yeah, I didn't really like the speed, compared to my stock) and an awful battery problem, where two battery fixes didn't work, and, then, with my heart desolated like a dragon's breath on corn fields, I restored the stock backup I made before doing that.
Ah yeah, I forgot to mention that my Defy+ came with a 2.3.4 version of the OS, just to let you guys know.
So, after that, seeking for more candy to my eyes (Jesus, I loved the settings and stuff from that ROM!), I sailed my boat to the famous WhiteRabbit 1.6, which I must admit, I LOVED it. But as I said, LOV"ED", until I started to face a giant tide... My phone was constantly freezing for long periods (something between 4 and 6 minutes, usually), something of which made my phone quite unusuable and unstable. With tears in my eyes, listening to Beethoven's 1st move of Moonlight Sonata (on the PC...), I decided to restore that old - 2-day old actually - backup to Stock again.
Now I just noticed that I don't like Stock anymore, I can't stand the limitations in comparison to the other two ROMs I used, and I want more! I want some stable ROM, and with "stable" I really mean something stable: a ROM that won't freeze, that has the basic stuff working, a good-looking UI, with fast and smooth scrolling, with a fix for the battery error (if there is the error on the ROM... which I'm quite sure will have), and that gives me more than the Stock would.
I've been looking at that MIUI Pikachu Edition and I really want to try it out, so, should I go on with it? Or do you guys recommend me something else? Another thing that I forgot to say is that I don't really feel like downgrading my Kernel nor putting my phone into a knight's blade way.
Yup, my device is Rooted and has a Boot Manager that I got on some brazillian forums, everything works as I guess they should do.
Sorry for the wall of text and before anything, thanks in advance!
Hey, mate
MIUI Pikachu Edition was the ROM I used absolutely the longest, almost two months without switching to anything else. I must admit that was the time I was constantly satisfied with my phone, but then CM9 became stable and I switched to it and then I simply couldn't go back to any Gingerbread ROM as the new features (mostly the looks ) of ICS were just too good Soon CM10 showed up and I've been with it since the first nightly.
So, yes, I think you should try Pikachu, but for it you need to flash "bl6 Froyo", because it's built for Froyo kernel only. (You cannot flash those flashable kernel zips! They are meant for the standard DEFY only. They are signed as bl5 and if you were to flash one of those, you would end up with a bootloader error, so you would have to flash the 2.3.4 sbf to get your phone back up and running...)
Other than that, CM10 is pretty much the way to go, if you ask me. Yes, it might take some time to load an app or another, but it's the most advanced ROM for the DEFY(+) so far and Jelly Bean really is the best Android version up to date. Quarx's latest nightly is the best version at the moment - the one from two days ago (September 12th). (Paranoid Android and AOKP are both based on Quarx's work, at least our (DEFY) versions)
The third choice for me would be MIUI 4.1, the one based on Jelly Bean. MIUI v4 was a nice step forward when it comes to looks, but it was two steps back when it comes to performance. v4.1 is a much better performer, but work on it has just started, so it'll take a couple of versions to polish it a bit. If you try and like Pikachu I guess you should follow Wajk's WIUI Jelly Bean progress and switch to it when you find it good enough for you
P.S. If it happens that you like Gingerbread more than Jelly Bean for whatever reason and don't like MIUI, FuZZ's CM7 KANG's were always the best for me :good:
I'd say that depends on how you want to handle your phone. If you want to just install a custom ROM once and then stick with it I can recommend CM 7.2, I had that for like half a year and everything worked nicely. It also offers lots of extra features and customization.
If you want the newest Android version I can second the above notion, try CM10 by Quarx. its a great ROM, and even though it is still work in Progress everything you need is working. This might mean that you want to update your ROM every once in a while to get the newest build and features, but this can be done easily through an app from within CM10.
As you have a Defy+ you wont need to flash any Kernel for the above, just pick the correct (Defy+) Version.
use CM10 its stable & works fine on defy+
Because of the controversy and arguments they inevitably generate, "best ROM" threads are prohibited on XDA. Thread closed.
