[q] cwm or amon ra? Which is better and why

Ok, so I have been using cwm since my android on metro. Never an issue, always smooth. Now everyone switching to amon ra. Why? And why are some devs making it so you need amon ra to install their roms? Give me some insight people..................

Ok, yes, Amon is more reliable on everything. Why? Idk, but it is.
Yes, some Devs ROMs have to have Amon to install correctly. Why? Idk, dont care. If the Devs say it is better, install it and enjoy.

CWM is great; on other phones. On the EVO, not so good. Doesn't wipe properly, is know to have problems restoring back-ups. Those are just the surface issues.

Plain and simple. If you have an evo, you use amon. Its like rule #1 haha. All of the CWM recovery versions I have used either A.didn't wipe correctly or B. Couldn't flash what I needed because it only supports edify scripting in zips and doesn't support amend (older but still kinda popular)

I have been doing this since December 2011. And have been rooting, flashing, kernals, you name it... So please, tone it down. I DID search this forum, google, facebook, and every other search engine on the web. NO ONE WOULD GIVE ME A STRAIGHT ANSWER.

I'm using that and it works perfectly for me.
NAND backups with no problems
NAND restore with no problems
WIPE for new flash with no problems
I would recommend it over RA 2.3 for the simple fact that you can use the BACK button to actually go back a step

I also recommend Amon ra 3.11 it just works on the EVO perfectly been using it since 1st day I rooted (2yrs) and it just works amazingly

Funny cause i was thinkin bout this very issue. I search....and this is the thread that i come up with.
One thing tho. I've always been on CWM. But im thinking of flashing AM just for the hell of it. Am i doomed to losing all of my CWM backups? Or can AM restore a CWM backup?? <<--(Before you ask, I searched this question and got conflicting answers.)

Hey Philly, I just want to thank you for your wipe zip, it is the only wipe that I use before any ROM change. It ROCKS!!!!

Flashing ICS success and issues

Wanted to get a discussion going over a much debated and discussed topic....flashing ICS roms with ICS kernels. I want to know the forums specific attempts so we can better understand user errors versus software errors versus hardware errors.
I bring this up as I went from el29 to fc07 a while back and have been on ICS since. I am now on FC22 courtesy of agat63, which I flashed over calks fc18 v2 from. Before that I went from stock rooted fc15 to calks. This was all done using either rogue recovery fc07 or rogue recovery fc22 and using calks format all zip or modified format all zip.
Does it seem this was all "lucky"? I have a feeling many of these brick issues are due to people trying to flash between an AOSP type rom to another and/or using ROM Manager to do so. So lets hear it . . .

The bricking is related to (I think) data partitioning in the ics cwm recovery. If you wipe anything, something is most likely going to go wrong.

That's what I'm trying to boil down to....I have done bith wipes and zip formats, yet no issues....some methods or ROMS are leading into this so I'm hoping the brickers out there can give some feedback on exactly what was flashed and on what ROM, along with some success stories to try to figure out the issue.

Also true....but with all the leaks going around and flashaholics it'd be good to have some guidelines til then, other than speculation. "I believe in science."

In addition,
CM9/AOSP/AOKP seem to increase brick chances.
CMW Touch espicially with ROM Manager is espicially dangerous and should not be touched.

This is what I hear the most. Has anyone else had success with flashing stock ROMs via clockwork on a stock(ish) ICS ROM? By this I mean based off fc07/15/18/22 (calk/agat63/goodness) and not CM9/AOKP/etc...

I've only ever used CWM before. What exactly is TWRP and how is it better? I did hear that the new version can handle encrypted phones which sounds important to me. I use AOKP with a CMPlus kernel. Thanks

Ive had issues with bad restores on TWRP as well as a few others I know where force closes would randomly start happening I don't see any difference other than themeing which is nice but reliability > customization.

ive had no problems with it. i made the switch because i needed the compression.

Well don't let my experience keep you from it. Its usually reliable. But I did have some issues. Just to let you know it can mess up sometimes.

and thats why i dont use cwm, because it tends to mess up/has bugs. ive never had a problem with twrp.

Better or worse depends on what you want I guess.
I use CWM 5.5.0.2 because it is extremely stable, and it is NON-touch. The touch-enabled CWM is NOT stable.
For me, having a touch-enabled recovery is silly -- I am in recovery to fix something or flash something, and I don't need a touch interface where I can accidentally touch the screen and it will do something I don't want. And I certainly do not want themes on my recovery. Hell, I don't even use themes on my ROMs...
From my point of view, the only benefits to using TWRP is the ability to decrypt data while in recovery (although I don't use encryption, so...) and compression. I can't comment on TWRP stability, as I have not used it long enough.

I did some research and TWRP looked good. I installed TWRP yesterday. I've made a backup and its very quick. I did not restore yet. I too have not had enough seat time to comment on reliability. .
I'm still confused whether or not I have to or should remove CWM apps or leave them installed? I paid for CWM touch. No biggie I spend more for a coffee at Starbucks.
Is it OK to leave both installed and to go back and forth between the two recoveries if needed? Is anyone keeping both available?
I understand the backups are not interchangeable.

Yes I would leave both back ups installed because you never know if twrp will mess up or clwmod but I highly doubt clwmod will. They are not interchangeable but clwmod can be flashed through rom manager in case your twrp fails and your not near your PC. I wouldn't use rom manager for nothing else but to flash clwmod its very unstable.

I have TWRP. I used to use CWM, but ever since getting my G4, that was what was only avail at the time. I really have to complaints on it though...other than the navigation from forlder to folder was easier on CWM.

Cwm is rock solid. Twrp has bugs(backup/restore especially) and lacks dev support.

Since OUDHS is based off CWM (IIRC), I'll have to say that. For the most part I've used CWM without problems anyway.

If you are using roms bssed off cyanogenmod... I say CWM but if your using TW roms go with TWRP

Wow. Didn't expect these comments. Here's my 2 cents. I started with cwm on my DX, then got touch cwm, then started to do aosp on all my phones really started with the gnex. Once I got my gnex ran aosp ever since. Have 3 s3,s as well. Twrp all the way. Never had issues and last checked it was faster. But then again. I haven't used cwm in years

I prefer TWRP, used to use CWM and it never failed me, so I will not complain, it's a preference. My bigger question would be, how would I move a file in recovery to another recovery if I wanted to have a few recovery options? Example, have the original backup on OUDHS and then switch to TWRP, how do you move that file? Sorry, not trying to hijack, but this thread seems like a good place for this kind of a question.

Had alot issues with twrp restoring nands, I went to cwm on my s3.
Twrp it points to backups that get put into the "0 "partition instead of the way it used to let u restore from external sd...in my opinion the multiple user partitions that now get created in custom recovery since jellbean is a huge headache. .. ive lost plenty of backups.. and no thanks to flashing cm10, downgrading to move all info back to internal storage is a train wreck ... I hate the way it is all set up now ..
Twrp benefit is its touch based and u can name your backups.
Cwm seems better but not as pretty.

Anything done from one recovery is not compatible with the other.. for instance as far as I know u can not restore a twrp backup with cwm and vise versa

Easiest way, save a backup with each recovery, that way, when the need arises to switch recoveries, you have it saved.

True, but it is an option, and when I needed it (due to a different recovery) I was in a jam, I had to wait til I got to my home computer. I have now uploaded all my recoveries to DropBox. I have a 32gb sd card, so space is of no real problem for me at this time.

Good point. I've been meaning to sync a bunch of stuff to my dropbox, but with upload speeds of less than 1Mbps, it's easy to procrastinate doing that.

Try and edit and change your apn settings to back to hspa+
My thread in general explains how and why ...you may gain a mb or 2 on upload there's no real fix for faster uploads, but u will get huge increase in megabytes on the download side.
I always use wifi for dropbox uploads.

Ohh no, it's nothing to do with my APN settings; it's the area which I live. I'm on AT&T service, and within about a 20 mile radius of my home I'm on EDGEand spotty 3G. My home internet is only 2Mbps down/ .25 up, so that's out too. It's just a case of bad location.
But thanks anyway!

Cwm but at the time twrp was only available. Twrp had crashed several times on my tablet while loading roms. But no issues so far on my phone.

TMO S4 on AT&T service... I jump around between the two, whatever peaks my interest I read/reply.

I prefer TWRP. I've never had a problem with it, very reliable. In my experience, it is very well supported and updated frequently. Not to say CWM is bad, it always worked for me as well.

I recently used rumrunner to gain s-off and root and I flashed CWM recovery. I have read different posts stating CWM is flaky on the One, and I've also read posts saying TWRP is flaky. Can anyone clear this up?

I've used TWRP on almost every device I've had and have never had an issue with it. I'm currently using TWRP with no issues.

Cwm is flaky period not just on the one. Twrp has been the only real choice for years.

TWRP and Story time
I'm currently using TWRP with no issues, and never had any, starting way back on the OG Evo.
I do remember installing clockwork on the old school T-Mobile G1 (Dream) and I didn't have any issues. Koush spearheaded the recovery project for us, he will always have that title of being the 'first' with his clockworkmod's. (a tip of the hat to Koush)
Reminds me a little of this story I learned a while back. I heard it was true too...
The importance of a beginning in anything isn't always about that first product or creation in the project. The importance is whether the original design and goal is met at the end and/or in the end product. I.E. Adam.
He was the first to be created of humanity but the original purpose for his creation did not meet all of the requirements of his Creator. Instead of scrapping the original product and starting anew, there was a plan to restore and rectify on the original project, or as i like to call it, the original "storyline".
The similarity of this story to the OP takes a turn here. Where as Koush didn't fully rectify his original product (Clockworkmod) and make a better one, the Creator of humanity did indeed follow up on His promise to begin in the restoration of the original design of His story: the "Second Adam".
One was born from the dust of the earth (ie 'first' Adam; the other birthed from the Spirit of God in Heaven ('Second' Adam).
The first Adam was born perfect but ultimately failed in its original design and purpose. But alas, One had come, the Second Adam, who did not fall or fail, but came, conquered ,and was victorious in all that man was suppose to represent and so so much more...

I use cwm just because I like it better, I've had no issues so far with it. Once 4ext is available I'll be using that, best I've used to date.

Truthfully I was CWM all day every phone no matter what.
I wouldn't even give TWRP a chance, once I did though, I never looked back, haven't been back on CWM since either.
I do have a gripe with a menu set up. Nothing major and enough for me to change. I highly suggest TWRP.

I like TWRP more. Better UI, navigation and features. That said, I use CWM. After experiencing bugs and instability with TWRP on the S4, I returned to the recovery that has never failed me, CWM.

I use TWRP and have no complaints. Never did with CWM either. The winner for me is TWRP though, because I like being able to add multiple zip files to flash at once instead of flashing them one at-a-time with CWM, not a big deal but saves some time.

I would love to see 4ext make a comeback. Best recovery ever.

I just actually received an email from max about 4ext for the One. In short - the framework of his recovery needs an overhall to work with the larger resolutions, multi-cores, etc. He has a lot of work ahead of him so if he does try to revamp it for the One it will be some time. But I would switch from TWRP to 4ext in a heartbeat...handsdown the best.

I used cwm with the original droid and it worked fine but when newer phones came out I noticed issues like on my dinc and bolt I had backups that was corrupted and I wasn't happy and moved to twrp and never had an issue since. I did move to 4ext with the bolt and that must say was the best over all. I miss 4ext when I got rid of the bolt but hope it comes to the one soon. It was so user friendly.

I've used CWM on my HP tablet, installed on a few other phones. Honestly, I've never given TWRP a chance. Is there anything I'm missing by not using it. I guess I'm just more used to the look and feel of CWM
