[q] cwm or amon ra? Which is better and why - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so I have been using cwm since my android on metro. Never an issue, always smooth. Now everyone switching to amon ra. Why? And why are some devs making it so you need amon ra to install their roms? Give me some insight people..................

I KNOW SOMEONE HAS AN ANSWER..........

Ok, yes, Amon is more reliable on everything. Why? Idk, but it is.
Yes, some Devs ROMs have to have Amon to install correctly. Why? Idk, dont care. If the Devs say it is better, install it and enjoy.

CWM is great; on other phones. On the EVO, not so good. Doesn't wipe properly, is know to have problems restoring back-ups. Those are just the surface issues.

Plain and simple. If you have an evo, you use amon. Its like rule #1 haha. All of the CWM recovery versions I have used either A.didn't wipe correctly or B. Couldn't flash what I needed because it only supports edify scripting in zips and doesn't support amend (older but still kinda popular)

I have been doing this since December 2011. And have been rooting, flashing, kernals, you name it... So please, tone it down. I DID search this forum, google, facebook, and every other search engine on the web. NO ONE WOULD GIVE ME A STRAIGHT ANSWER.
SO.....Thank you for your pleasent answer.

Umm, I didn't think I was being overly stern in my answer.

Since it almost seem like you're interested in having a little bit of both worlds; I guess you can try this out and see how it works out for you

I'm using that and it works perfectly for me.
NAND backups with no problems
NAND restore with no problems
WIPE for new flash with no problems
I would recommend it over RA 2.3 for the simple fact that you can use the BACK button to actually go back a step

+1
I also recommend Amon ra 3.11 it just works on the EVO perfectly been using it since 1st day I rooted (2yrs) and it just works amazingly

One thing tho. I've always been on CWM. But im thinking of flashing AM just for the hell of it. Am i doomed to losing all of my CWM backups? Or can AM restore a CWM backup?? <<--(Before you ask, I searched this question and got conflicting answers.)

Which is?
I use Ra btw.
ra for sure, ive been using it since day one. i never use cwm, i have a few times but don't like it.
I used AmonRA on my MyTouch 3G back in the day and liked it. When I first rooted it I used Clockwork for the ease of updating through Rom Manager app, but as I learned my way around rooting and flashing and Android for that matter I started using AmonRA and doing everything manually. I wish I would have never used Clockwork on my EVO, but when I first rooted it instead of doing it the long way I used Unrevoked3. I made a backup as soon as it was done and lost my RSA keys after running Clockwork for about a week and having to Nandroid restore. Been using AmonRA ever since. I am sure that Clockwork has fixed the Wimax issue, but I still prefer AmonRA because now I am used to it. I also like Amon options better and I know it is wiping my davlik cache when I tell it to.
My point is that I never used CWM and I want to know what it has and does that AR doesn't....
That's your point?
Amon, here, for whatever that's worth .... which, apparently, isn't much.

That's part of it....
Compatibility with Rom Manager is probably the biggest draw for Clockwork. Some people use RM religiously. I've never used it, because it reminds me of some bad experiences I've had flashing a PC BIOS with a Windows app. I'm sure it works fine, but I'm old fashioned, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Also, AR was the first to backup RSA keys. I've never lost mine but I've never looked back.

Restoring apps is just a part of flashing, this isn't a great selling point. I've had problems with CWM not working with certain rom's and all around RA is just cleaner and to the point. To each their own I guess but you are the minority here my friend.

New from OG Epic, advice needed.

Hello,
I dropped and broke my epic today. The sprint dude said I could pay 100 for insurance to replace it, or use my premier early discount $200 since premier ends this month.
Anyway, I ran SRF 1.2 and ACS ICS 5.5.
What do you guys recommend for roms on this phone? I forgot how to attain root and recovery.
Just fyi I will be using the go series (launcher, sms, contacts, dialer).
One last thing, what is the best way to transfer everything to my new phone?

I get it that its q & a but your questions are all in the wiki and to me we all need to do a like better jib of reading up on things which saves on the off the wall threads but OK I will spoon feed ya... try UnNamed its a nice rom and of course Calks is always a great choice. There is a CM rom in development as well. Now if you like odex or barebone roms the forum has a couple with nice ICS themes. Now to root there are a few methods but most say us sfhubs method which is pretty easy.

I then went about getting Clockwork Mod Recovery by way of Rom Manager. Easiest thing to do. I will be installing Calkulin's rom first.
I'm still tripping about adding all of my data from my first Epic. I don't get it since we are talking about two different SD cards. =/

I had to use this to install clockwork mod instead:

Cwm for me
TWRP all the way!:good:
I like TWRP because I have a touch screen, I want to use it. The buttons on TWRP are nice and big. CWM touch is too easy to push the wrong thing. And queuing up multiple zips too flash saves me a little time during my almost daily flashing

TWRP for now...
Had CWM for my old optimus one and install it on my S2X first when i bought it... but recently change to TWRP and it's big improvement for the GUI... No more need to flash Darkside Wipe Cache and Darkside Full WIpe... For now it's working fine, but some people says they almost brick their phone with TWRP...don't know why... i'm still little nervous with it...
In my opinion twrp is the best. The openscript support, and also the flashing of multiple zips is great.
TWRP because it is easier to use, and you can flash multiple zips.
Cwm i gotta go the safe route cause im a noob.

Smelkus or TWRP?

Any thoughts on this one?
smelkus said:
Thought I'd mention, I'm no longer working on this recovery (if you couldn't tell ). The base is pretty dated now and beyond my ability to bring to new devices. TWRP is an awesome recovery, so I'd look for that on your new phones and tablets. Zip queues are sweet and while there is no auto-reboot it's not that big of a deal since it backs ups and restores so fast. You can check them out here or in your respective device forum. I really appreciate everyone who liked this recovery. I went from bugging drellisdee to learning how to make it on my own and that was a really great experience.
Right now, I'm trying to pitch in on ParanoidAndroid for the Nexus 7 when possible and hope to upgrade my phone soon (waiting for my contract to expire late November and for what Google has to say on 10/29). Thanks again everybody!

There are plenty of us still using Smelkus without any issues. I've used it with much success. Boils down to personal preference, really. Haven't used TWRP since version 1.0, but it's good, too. Just stay away from ClockworkMod and you'll be fine.

I'm sticking with what i know works,i like the TWRP touch, but Smelkus has been good to me,why fix something that isnt broken.
I prefer to use Smelkus. As far as TWRP goes, my only *true* issue is the fact that it takes like a minute for my phone to load TWRP when I boot into recovery. When I boot into Smelkus, it takes no more than 10 secs. Maybe it's just my phone, but I know that I'm not willing to wait that long for my recovery to load.

Smelkus is the best, takes everything from amon RA and adds to it. I just can't trust a touch recovery that says "no bricks" in the open. And with smelkus if the capacitive buttons fail you can still use the volume rockers and power button to select things.

TWRP and Story time
I'm currently using TWRP with no issues, and never had any, starting way back on the OG Evo.
I do remember installing clockwork on the old school T-Mobile G1 (Dream) and I didn't have any issues. Koush spearheaded the recovery project for us, he will always have that title of being the 'first' with his clockworkmod's. (a tip of the hat to Koush)
Reminds me a little of this story I learned a while back. I heard it was true too...
The importance of a beginning in anything isn't always about that first product or creation in the project. The importance is whether the original design and goal is met at the end and/or in the end product. I.E. Adam.
He was the first to be created of humanity but the original purpose for his creation did not meet all of the requirements of his Creator. Instead of scrapping the original product and starting anew, there was a plan to restore and rectify on the original project, or as i like to call it, the original "storyline".
The similarity of this story to the OP takes a turn here. Where as Koush didn't fully rectify his original product (Clockworkmod) and make a better one, the Creator of humanity did indeed follow up on His promise to begin in the restoration of the original design of His story: the "Second Adam".
One was born from the dust of the earth (ie 'first' Adam; the other birthed from the Spirit of God in Heaven ('Second' Adam).
The first Adam was born perfect but ultimately failed in its original design and purpose. But alas, One had come, the Second Adam, who did not fall or fail, but came, conquered ,and was victorious in all that man was suppose to represent and so so much more...
I use cwm just because I like it better, I've had no issues so far with it. Once 4ext is available I'll be using that, best I've used to date.

Truthfully I was CWM all day every phone no matter what.
I wouldn't even give TWRP a chance, once I did though, I never looked back, haven't been back on CWM since either.
I do have a gripe with a menu set up. Nothing major and enough for me to change. I highly suggest TWRP.
I like TWRP more. Better UI, navigation and features. That said, I use CWM. After experiencing bugs and instability with TWRP on the S4, I returned to the recovery that has never failed me, CWM.

I use TWRP and have no complaints. Never did with CWM either. The winner for me is TWRP though, because I like being able to add multiple zip files to flash at once instead of flashing them one at-a-time with CWM, not a big deal but saves some time.

I just actually received an email from max about 4ext for the One. In short - the framework of his recovery needs an overhall to work with the larger resolutions, multi-cores, etc. He has a lot of work ahead of him so if he does try to revamp it for the One it will be some time. But I would switch from TWRP to 4ext in a heartbeat...handsdown the best.
