So I know what a nandroid backup does but I was hoping you guys can help me understand a couple of things better. After you create one, is it always there or just until you restore it? Also, can you backup multiple nandroid backups, and when you're done with one, how do you delete it?

Awesome thank you for explaining. One more question. Do you always wipe data and caches before restoring or does the nandroid restore do it for you?

Since we're all here about Nandroids should they take >30 minutes to do? My Epic always hangs on .android_secure for a huge amount of time before it actually starts backing stuff up or restoring it. That's why I don't do them, in the time it takes to make a backup I can already be restoring my stuff.

That's abnormal that usually takes a good amount of time but I just backed up a 400mb miui and it took around 4-5 minutes and about 8 minutes to restore my 500mb cm7

You are using CWM 5.0.2.7 right? Because that has a better backup and restore method that takes about half the time of it's predecessors.
Sorry for the newbie question, but how does one perform a "nandroid backup" on their phone? I did a search and figured I should ask in this thread.
I want to flash the latest Sleeper ROM but I've been told to do a nandroid backup first incase I have problems.

ahhhhhh, so that is what it means. I guess it is easier to just type nandroid backup than CWM Backup....
Thanks for answering the question! I'm doing it now.
update: Man, it's taking a loooooong time. I posted this 12 min ago and my back up is still on "Backing up.android_secure"

It shouldn't be taking very long... unless of course you have like 150+ apps... that are paid that's what .android_secure is your apps license and market link ( I think) but I'm pretty sure it is

i had problems while i was restoring. but i think it is because of having a theme with a mtd rom. but i didn't try a different one. i am back to stock now i have to get my screen to flake out more so i can take it in.
edit: the backup would do the restore process just fine and it booted up but only the backlit keys would be on nothing else would show up. and the back up only took like 3-5 mins tops but i didn't have any apps installed you know one of those flashaholics

yea its a refurb. this is my 4th phone. and this one has been f 'ed from the get go when ever it is on a white screen say like when facebook 1st loads there will be lines that goes across the screen. some times there really bad other time there not even there. I dont get it but I cant take it in till it gets worse because sprint people will be like there is nothing wrong.
Yep white lines sounds like the screen has an issue... if you could get a picture or video or reproduce it at the store then they'll fix it. On what rom did you expierence this though I know sometimes its because the kernels depending on how the defaults are set on voodoo control if of course that rom supports it.

it does it with stock but not as often. but any custom rom its worse. even before mtd. alot of it is when i am using heavy data. my normal is streaming pandora and while on xda and facebook. I know the screen was the worst on miui. it was doing big black lines and then the screen had this greenish yellow tint to it for about 5 mins. thats what made me go back. maybe what i should do is get a custom kernel keep stock take a picture of my phone with my wifes and then go back to stock and walk on in the store.

Weird I know that when rgb's are real low in voodoo ill get this weird green tint to it but goes away when I start using it again its the backlight or the dimming when it plans to shut off.

I accidentally left Wifi Kill on while I fell asleep last night. I wake up to go to work today to my A100 frozen. I reboot it. It works for two seconds and reboots. Doesn't reboot all the way with the Acer boot screen, just the boot animation. If anyone can help, I would be very grateful. I will post a logcat if I can when I get home.
can you get to the recovery? I'd say if you can get a file on the external SD and flash it you should be good.
Was there a button combination? I'm not sure if adb reboot recovery worked. I know I used to be able to reboot into recovery with a terminal emulator. I'll try when I get home

I second that. If using one of the update.zip's doesn't work then you can always try a full restore.

Hey ive had my gs3 since release, but pass couple of days it has froze up , once while just letting it sit and when I went to pick up screen would not come on , it wouldnt even do anything when I plugged charger to it, so I did battery pull and it turned back on like normal, fast forward to today was on phone with wife and noticed the screen would light up but was still able to talk on it, so got off phone and did battery pull again, and powered back on, so does anyone know what could be causing it to do that? And its not rooted.

Rogue app hopefully. Otherwise it could be a hw problem.
If you can, backup your stuff and factory reset (itll wipe int sd too). Then run as bare as you can (no/few apps) to see if it still happens.

Hmm, havent downloaded any new apps in a while, did update flipboard yesterday morning and then this started, gonna uninstall update to flipboard and find an sd card so I can move all my music to it before resetting , hopefully 1 of these works , really dont want a refurbished phone...

Is it just me? After rooting and cwming my phone my system default time is always in the 1970's so it messes up the cwm back ups and things. If you have your phone on airplane mode and reboot it won't grab the time from the network so that how you can check. I only noticed it when I brought in cwm. I've tried different versions of cwm never gotten it fixed though. Oh I'm always aosp, Rom/kernel makes no difference
Can anybody confirm this? Or share any fixes?

Hey look, for a while now I have been using the script and app here.
It's called oNandroid.
- perform backups without rebooting.
- manage stored backups and the dates are correct.
- If you ever need to restore, reboot to CWM.
- It's super convenient and works perfect for me.
Problem solved...and a bag of chips!
(lots of options. Can be used with the GUI or with any script app)
Enjoy
I read something koush posted in Google+ a while back. It has to do with the way the chip set is programmed it doesn't communicate the way it's supposed to to update the date stored on the chip. I guess if you turn on airplane mode and then reboot it will default to the same date. If you pay attention every time you boot the phone it polls the server for date and time.

I figured it was something funky more or less hardware related. Are you saying there's not much hope it can be easily updated?
I can totally live with it, it's really not a big deal.
Besides sometimes it's fun to send people text messages with a 1970's date stamped on it.

Make sure your media players arent still running in the background and that your network programs arent keeping your phone awake by scanning for new media every few minutes...
When my phone used media excessively, I just went into my media players (allshare, dice player, mx player, UPnPlay, XBMC, etc) and made sure media scans were set accordingly and then shut my phone off and let it charge to full strength.... worked for me

Thanks for the reply. I tried that also. Upnp un installed already. Even took of the battery n reboot couple of times but the DRM Protected thing and media storage still killing my battery

What you ladies and gents are staring at is a wake lock. In this case, due to the MediaScannerService.
There are a few different causes, one being some corrupt image, sound or video file somewhere on your SD card.
Solutions range from killing the service to finding the troublesome files and deleting them.
Good luck,
Darkshado

A few games I play trigger the MediaScanner services to come on and keep the phone awake (wakelock). One being NFS:MW. If you long press the home button after playing it and swipe it away it will kill it.
