Make sure your media players arent still running in the background and that your network programs arent keeping your phone awake by scanning for new media every few minutes...
When my phone used media excessively, I just went into my media players (allshare, dice player, mx player, UPnPlay, XBMC, etc) and made sure media scans were set accordingly and then shut my phone off and let it charge to full strength.... worked for me

What you ladies and gents are staring at is a wake lock. In this case, due to the MediaScannerService.
There are a few different causes, one being some corrupt image, sound or video file somewhere on your SD card.
Solutions range from killing the service to finding the troublesome files and deleting them.
Good luck,
Darkshado

A few games I play trigger the MediaScanner services to come on and keep the phone awake (wakelock). One being NFS:MW. If you long press the home button after playing it and swipe it away it will kill it.

Hello folks,
I got my galaxy note 2 for 3 days now, but when I want to play mp3 music then the problems come. Music is stuttering all the time. I'm not using bluethoot or anything like that. Has anyone too this problem or a fix?
Cheers,

Nope, I have everything checked twice. I noticed when i upload my music to dropbox the quality is not stuttering. But when I copy my songs directly from my pc trough usb to my note then the problems are gong to come up.

There is some problem with your speaker. Better get it replaced. I suppose you are getting it normal when you listened through the ear phones.

Funnily enough, I noticed a stutter on some music tracks today when using the default music player.
My mp3's are stored on a 64gb class 10 SanDisk sd card if that makes any difference.
I'm using player pro ... for my music player ... and I had this happen once .. but it was some bad mp3 files .. Blahhhhhhhhhh

I'm having this issue too using the beta of n7player. Don't know if it's player's fault (youtube audio seems fine), or it's something related to custom kernel/rom :S

Possible, but i'm still running stock kernel, rom and radio. I think i'm going to the store and maybe they send my phone for repair. I'll keep you guys up to date

Mmm, just noticed, mine is a bluetooth issue, motivated most likely by the custom kernel/rom I'm running..., the shuttering gets worse if I move away from the phone, anything beyond a couple of meters == no sound at all.
im having this problem also
i havent identified why it is but im getting alot of dalvikvm concurrent and for_alloc freed in my logs
things i've tried:
overclocking
set the minimum to 500 mhz
changed cpu govenor
another music player(winamp)
removing any games that i've installed
and then i flashed it with a custom rom, and i still get lag spikes ;/
http://pastebin.com/XQJNyVng
the lag comes when the dalvikvm shows up in log
i notice that it only happens when the screen is off
auto memory manager (play store) and set "empty apps" to 250 - its better but still Some stuttering
The auto memory manager fixed my probleem! I'm glad it fixed the laggy songs! Thanks!

Hi,
Read on one of the threads that when you transfer songs in bulk to the SGN2, they stutter, but if you transfer in batches of 5-6, the same songs play well.
yeh same problem here with stock music player :/
I have the same problem using the stock ROM and music player.
The stuttering seems random, and I have plenty of free memory (~750MB free).

yeh for me it is also random, sometimes i have listened for 2 hours music without stutters, later i get 1-3 stutters at one song. Especially i get stutters when screen is off or surfing the net. Noticed stutters at 4.1.2 firmwares, hadnt any problems with 4.1.1

I'm still on 4.1.1 actually.
Hmm I'm back to this problem. Stock Rom/Kernel. I'm rooted now.
Used the memory manager but the issues are still there. It's really weird. Did put them one at another on my SDcard trough USB.
When I zip my files put them on Dropbox and download them from my Dropbox then there is no problem..
Almost would think that the drivers are screwing the songs up in 320kbps.

Hi everyone,
I just updated to JB and noticed that Media server (66% usage) has been keeping my phone awake for the entire time (4 hours). Is there any fix to this? It's running hot and draining 10% per hour (and it's been idle).
Disable it? uninstall [root]?

It's always recommended you so a factory reset after any update. That should fix it.
The thing is though, I wiped everything, installed the update using ODIN, wiped that and then flashed the Black Jellybean rom. :/
Look at whsts under media server in batt stats.
Go in app manager and clear data for each one. Reboot and give it at least 5 min to rebuild library.
Prob need to clear data for these

Download (both)

What version of what kernel does this issue occur on? In October, the CM10 builds had issues with media server drain that coincided with kernel commits. 3.0.46 or 47 i think had those issues.
I assume its the official JB update, not a custom rom.

Requires more than that. Media Storage usually isnt the primary culprit. See my post towards top.

I've been having this issue for a while now on Frosty. I tried what Doc mentioned earlier, but it doesn't seem to work after restarting my phone. The only way I can stop it from draining is to go into battery and stopping the process.

If that didnt help, the next step is to factory reset and reflash.
If that doesn't work then itll be something on your sdcard causing it to hang/wig out.
It may be a corrupt media file, or just something on there it thinks is media and when it attempts to load its info into library it screws up. Im just guessing at this part, but if you do a complete clean install, all thats left is your sd data.
Youd need to backup, and reformat the sdcard most likely.

This wont help in my experience. I intentionally reflashed everything last night and left my sd card out, and it still does it
I've done tons and tons of experimenting with this issue over the past 24-48 hours and I was able to come up with a solution that worked for me. I examined the external.db file which is located in /data/data/com.android.providers.media/ and noticed that it scans all files on internal SD and Micro SD right after each reboot. I had a 1.6gb titanium backup folder on the Micro SD which was taking the scanner a lot of time to get through so I copied that to the PC and deleted it from my phone.
I also got rid of a whole bunch of other unneeded files like roms that were just sitting around taking up space. So now instead of my phone running max CPU utilization for 10-15 minutes after reboot, it only does it for about 1-2 minutes and settles down.
Thats normal behavior for it. Naturally the more data you have the longer it takes to scan. 10-25mins is longer tgsn I believe it hss to be, but the issue a lot if people are having is this process will continuously run forever! Causing 10-15% power drops in less than an hour!
All I know for certain is the couple of suggestions I posted in here have worked for others ive helped in the past, the first one I mentioned seems to work most often and has worked a few times for me. Obviously they dont always work for everyone. I just wish we could figure out the exact cause!

This is a problem that ruined my experience with the JB leaks since I've never had this problem on CM10. I hope it's as easy as releasing a patch.

I FOUND A FIX! Apparently, I had 300 mp3s that needed fixing so I ran a program "Mp3 Scan + Repair", fixed all my mp3s and put it back on my sd card. Also, I removed all m4as and converted them into mp3s. This was a suggestion for how to handle mediaserver issues from ICS so I was surprised it worked for JB

Awesome dude. I also read somewhere that the CFQ I/O scheduler has more of an issue w/ media scanner than others. I'm not sure how true that is, but lately I've been running 2ghz as max speed w/ SIO for I/O Scheduler & interactive governor along w/ the other things I've done and I get less than 1 minute of CPU trashing after each reboot. I will have to try that program though to see if it can get me down to zero.
Hello,
My battery status shows me at MEDIA approximately 30%.
How can I eliminate the power-hungry?
I had the same issue and traced it to an app that was accessing my sd card all the time. Un installing that app solved my battery and I'm back to approx 2 days life.

I have the same problem on CRASH ROM 3.1v. It drains the battery once you activate any media video from your phone. To deactivate the glitch need to open task manager and CLEAR RAM. Unfortunately this is a temporary fix. Looking for permanent fix.
This is common case if there is significant amount of media files on the device. Media scanner makes a database of the files and if you have like 10000 or more it takes time and resources.
There is several apps on the store for that phenomenon.

Don't know how willing you are to do this, but you can move all your media to your PC, then delete it off your internal and external. That for sure will fix it. Or else you have to m to find the one piece or pieces of corrupted media and delete it.

You are maybe also affected by this bug, very, very annoying: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=37199
There is also an app to deactivate the bloody media scanner, but that is also an temporary fix only, because from time to time we need it:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.addz.mediascannerroot&feature=search_result
Personally, I have a shortcut on my home screen to deactivate and another to activate that service... It seems also to be triggered by too many files in a single folder (If I understand the bug report correctly).
Its called MP3Validator (Windows) - http://mp3val.sourceforge.net/
