Media app and deep sleep issues - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

So im having issues with my phone not going into deep sleep. It does it on every rom. So I froze it with rom toolbox and that does nothing. I also have cpu sleeper and this stupid media keeps it from DS. I dont want to reboot and clear caches every single freakin time either. Can I delete this media or what? Oh I also defrosted it and I still can click on it in battery stats and force close it. please help before I go crazy

I dont get it either mine doesn't ever sleep either. I have tried cpu sleeper, int.d script tweaks, sleep from the widgets on phone to put it to sleep and nothin works. I did a logcat to check if a wakelock is on and I didn't see anything .

Don't know how willing you are to do this, but you can move all your media to your PC, then delete it off your internal and external. That for sure will fix it. Or else you have to m to find the one piece or pieces of corrupted media and delete it.

how do you make your phone go into a deep sleep?

ive seen people saying about deep sleep how do you do it? sorry for a noob question.
It's automatic. When you lock the screen it should go into deep sleep. Download cpu spy to check cpu states
so basically to save you battery . should i use JD?

No need to use Jack Daniels to put your phone into deep sleep. (I dunno what you mean by use JD lol)
Most ROMS, including 100% unrooted stock will use deep sleep.
^^^^^^^ - Bahahaha!
I read the Thread title and started laffing immediately.
========================
Just smash your phone against a wall to make it go into eternal deep sleep, mate.

I believe the chap means 'Juice Defender.' Make sure you don't have apps keeping your phone awake, too.

Right, deep sleep is a battery saving state when phone is not in use. JD makes a smartphone dumb by disabling the radios. It generally uses more battery than it saves. I don't use, nor recommend JD(Have tried it though, and quickly realized it ruins a smartphone and makes no difference in life). However, some people still seem to think it's some great gift from God, but they are mistaken. A simple script to UV and UC/OC can take care of all your battery saving needs. Or if you can't manage to run a script use system tuner to do these things.
If you are planning on running an ICS rom you cannot not UV or OC until kernel source is released, though. You can UC it
Turn the power off lol
Nah I usually close all apps and cached ones as well. No oc UV apps either

Is there a special way to close those apps??

Like this:
Settings > Applications > Running Services.
Press Menu, and select Show cached processes (you don't have a choice, really).
Now select whichever processes you want and stop them.
Say, M&S, is it ok to stop ALL of those cached processes?

[Q] JB Media Server Drain

Hi everyone,
I just updated to JB and noticed that Media server (66% usage) has been keeping my phone awake for the entire time (4 hours). Is there any fix to this? It's running hot and draining 10% per hour (and it's been idle).
Disable it? uninstall [root]?

It's always recommended you so a factory reset after any update. That should fix it.
The thing is though, I wiped everything, installed the update using ODIN, wiped that and then flashed the Black Jellybean rom. :/
Look at whsts under media server in batt stats.
Go in app manager and clear data for each one. Reboot and give it at least 5 min to rebuild library.
Prob need to clear data for these
com.sec.android.providers.downloads
Download (both)
Media Storage

What version of what kernel does this issue occur on? In October, the CM10 builds had issues with media server drain that coincided with kernel commits. 3.0.46 or 47 i think had those issues.
I assume its the official JB update, not a custom rom.

Requires more than that. Media Storage usually isnt the primary culprit. See my post towards top.

I've been having this issue for a while now on Frosty. I tried what Doc mentioned earlier, but it doesn't seem to work after restarting my phone. The only way I can stop it from draining is to go into battery and stopping the process.

If that didnt help, the next step is to factory reset and reflash.
If that doesn't work then itll be something on your sdcard causing it to hang/wig out.
It may be a corrupt media file, or just something on there it thinks is media and when it attempts to load its info into library it screws up. Im just guessing at this part, but if you do a complete clean install, all thats left is your sd data.
Youd need to backup, and reformat the sdcard most likely.

This wont help in my experience. I intentionally reflashed everything last night and left my sd card out, and it still does it
I've done tons and tons of experimenting with this issue over the past 24-48 hours and I was able to come up with a solution that worked for me. I examined the external.db file which is located in /data/data/com.android.providers.media/ and noticed that it scans all files on internal SD and Micro SD right after each reboot. I had a 1.6gb titanium backup folder on the Micro SD which was taking the scanner a lot of time to get through so I copied that to the PC and deleted it from my phone.
I also got rid of a whole bunch of other unneeded files like roms that were just sitting around taking up space. So now instead of my phone running max CPU utilization for 10-15 minutes after reboot, it only does it for about 1-2 minutes and settles down.
Thats normal behavior for it. Naturally the more data you have the longer it takes to scan. 10-25mins is longer tgsn I believe it hss to be, but the issue a lot if people are having is this process will continuously run forever! Causing 10-15% power drops in less than an hour!
All I know for certain is the couple of suggestions I posted in here have worked for others ive helped in the past, the first one I mentioned seems to work most often and has worked a few times for me. Obviously they dont always work for everyone. I just wish we could figure out the exact cause!

This is a problem that ruined my experience with the JB leaks since I've never had this problem on CM10. I hope it's as easy as releasing a patch.

I FOUND A FIX! Apparently, I had 300 mp3s that needed fixing so I ran a program "Mp3 Scan + Repair", fixed all my mp3s and put it back on my sd card. Also, I removed all m4as and converted them into mp3s. This was a suggestion for how to handle mediaserver issues from ICS so I was surprised it worked for JB

Awesome dude. I also read somewhere that the CFQ I/O scheduler has more of an issue w/ media scanner than others. I'm not sure how true that is, but lately I've been running 2ghz as max speed w/ SIO for I/O Scheduler & interactive governor along w/ the other things I've done and I get less than 1 minute of CPU trashing after each reboot. I will have to try that program though to see if it can get me down to zero.

yes, i have one, don't waste your time with them. let your RAM disk do clean up for you. your phone is fast enough that you should need a task killer. task killers are soooo two years ago
but in all seriousness, you don't need one bud. just use your device it will be fine without one :good:
Well when I used to have on it would say it killed 35 apps or so everytime I pressed it. I should just do nothing?
My ultimate goal was to cut down on battery usage by not letting them run???

you'll be alright without it man, trust me. i haven't used a task killer since i had my samsung moment and never needed one. battery life is great on this thing, and performance with be there.
Leave it alone. Search on Google you'll find detailed reasons why task killers are useless, even harmful if not used with caution. Android is smart enough to do it on its own.

Like everyone else says. Task killer is no no ^-^
But what I actually love and use, is startup manager. It allows you to choose which programs run at boot. You just have to be rooted. It cut my boot time in half and saves a lot of resources by not having random things running that you don't need. And I don't notice a difference in the time it takes to open those disabled programs either.

Cache cleaner NG is the best one. Just don't use the "old cleaning method" because it will hang on you. I also like this app because you can set time intervals on the clean up process. I always have mine run late at night when I'm sleeping. Just wake up with a notification to clear with details on how much it cleaned up
And IMO disabling apps is a waste of time. I prefer just going in and deleting them manually and wiping dalvik cache because it frees up storage space in your system and data directory. Just a cleaner way to do it I think. But either way works.

Thanks for the app cobraboy85! And if you are talking about disabling apps via the startup manager, it actually does help. I do delete apps i dont use. But for things i do use but dont want running (ie Spare phone, youtube, google voice, tapatalk) i remove from being started at boot and then they dont run until i run them and i always completely exit them when done.

Phone is SUPER SLOW

My wife's phone just got super slow like 2 days ago...it just takes a long time for apps to load...to download ANYTHING...and I mean slow...I cleaned her phone...I used sd maid pro...and went through her internal storage and she now has 8 out of 12 gigs free...so what could be causing this...?...I tried switching Roms and it still acts the same...any help would be great...Thanks in advance...
P.s...she does download ALOT themes...wallpaper...and music...BUT like I said I cleaned her phone moved a lot to her sd card...

Download an app called Elixir 2. Open it up and touch on "running" and keep on tapping on the right arrow until it says "top" in the middle. You'll then see which app(s) are taking up the most CPU. If its com.sec.providers.downloads, that's the same reason I stopped using Touchwiz roms and switched over to CM. That problem crops up for me randomly and I've tried many different methods to fix it to no permanent avail.
She not on touchwiz...she's on cm10
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Still try the method though. Could be a rogue app that needs to be manually closed. I discovered that the current version of the engadget app gives me that problem, sometimes facebook too.
Is it possible it was accidentally put on powersave Governor? Also clear the dalvik and cache from recovery. If that don't work your best off just wiping. Sheer could either have too many apps or rogue app using up to much of the cpu

Make sure your media players arent still running in the background and that your network programs arent keeping your phone awake by scanning for new media every few minutes...
When my phone used media excessively, I just went into my media players (allshare, dice player, mx player, UPnPlay, XBMC, etc) and made sure media scans were set accordingly and then shut my phone off and let it charge to full strength.... worked for me

What you ladies and gents are staring at is a wake lock. In this case, due to the MediaScannerService.
There are a few different causes, one being some corrupt image, sound or video file somewhere on your SD card.
Solutions range from killing the service to finding the troublesome files and deleting them.
Good luck,

A few games I play trigger the MediaScanner services to come on and keep the phone awake (wakelock). One being NFS:MW. If you long press the home button after playing it and swipe it away it will kill it.
