Honestly why do you need that much space/speed ? Just stick a 32gb card in it. If you try to overclock it you'll just fry it and kill the battery and any warranty.

Because I choose to buy a 64GB version. I didn't ask which one I should get, I asked where I could find those versions. Anyway most high end Android phones can all be overclocked. Like One X or S III. People run them at 1.8GHz without issues.

Your storage space issue is for me the easiest to answer. I am an extensive user of audio books. The teaching company series, Will Durant's seminal 12 volume series, podcasts, science fiction audio... Asimov, Huxley, Clarke, current fiction, "Why the West Rules for Now" (i highly recommend by the way) is how i keep sane on morning and evening commutes. I have a 16gb g-note and a 64gb SD card and i use all of this storage. Samsung's release of a new 128gb SD card will be none to soon, and if it cannot be utilized on my current note, it will most likely spur me to buy the note 2 with 2 GB ram and 64 GB SD internal. I also can access and stream from my collection on my home server but my at&t "unlimited" isn't, so i use WiFi whenever possible. This means that i use the phones memory as a cache buffer to limit my telecoms' leverage. Concerning speed. I am currently testing an incredible voice control app called Utter. Extremely flexible, configurable and powerful. Coupled with Ivona voice the results are simply stunning. I am also running a custom JellyBean rom called slimbean that is half the size of ice cream, is overclocked at 1.8 ghz and is as smooth as a baby's butt. I've been overclocking and flashing roms since i joined xda, its why i joined xda. I understand your credulity, we do still call these devices phones after all. i am also aware that my setup and usage is not typical, yet it is just this flexibility of android and current Samsung products that make them so attractive people like us with such differing needs and views.

First time i heard the "you don't need that much.... " line was when i opted for a 10MB hard drive for my then new spanking hot PC AT. It had a 16bit processor and 512kb of ram...my buddy had the
commodore 64 (64 KB of ram and a cassette based memory). Despite his lack of technical sense, we remain friends to this day. Unsurprisingly, he favors that other phone ecosystem....the glass jewelry ones with those little screens. He still freaks out when he sees my note. His first words? Yeah, you guessed it; " you don't need that much..." I notice his wife checking it out though... So maybe there is some justice in this life

I had friends that laughed at me s3 about its size. Now one of thes ( a .... girl! ) got one for free

Same thing with 2nd battery. People give 500+$ for a phone and they don't get an extra battery and a charger.

I have about 80GB of mp3 files which I want to carry around with me. I have several GB more of pictures I have a Galaxy S3 with 32GB internal and a 64GB card, and it's getting crowded. And I'll keep adding more files. Maybe one day I'll be comfortable with keeping this in "the cloud", or streaming it from HDs in my house, but right now I want it all on my phone.
Right now Samsung's web page only mentions a 16GB version for US carriers. I definitely won't buy that.
I agree with the philosophy of not questioning why someone wants the storage they want.
It is already available for pre-order on some sites (handyshop.de) by an exorbitant price of 899 eur and a delivery date at the end of October...

I was wondering the same as well. I just ordered my Note 2, but am wondering about the storage. I have a 16GB Nexus 7 and have found that with no music/videos/picutres stored, I cannot download all of my apps without getting a low storage warning.
Anyone have issues with downloading around 200 apps on a 16GB Note 2? I know you can add an SD Card, but that doesnt help with app storage, correct? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I am pretty confident at this point I'll be picking up a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 once it hits the market (presuming it's not banned off the face of the Earth by Apple first, somehow), but I have a question, and, I'm not entirely clear on something:
The Note II comes in three variants, 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB. However, what's the point of buying anything other than the 16 GB (maybe 32 GB) if it supports up to 64 GB via micro SDHC? Plus, to my understanding you can install apps directly to the MSDHC as well? I presume this is due to local caching, performance, etc. which is why you would want to use local storage only, but, to that, I ask: if you buy the 64 GB, is there really enough of a reason to require it? The app store just doesn't provide enough interest to need it for apps themselves, music and video can put dumped in the much cheaper MSDHC instead; so why buy the higher storage capacity? I know this is a very subjective thing, so, it's a bit of preference involved, but, I'm curious to know what the leading factors are, so when the time comes to pay the premium I'll know for sure what I'll be picking up internal-storage wise.
Anyone who wants to clear this up for me, please, do, I'm sure I'm missing something fundamental here.

Internal NAND is usually orders of magnitude faster. Also, it is less complicated to deal with when you dont have to play the "Which Partition To Use Today" game.
Its not worth getting anything over 16gb as long as you can expand with micro sd. If no external storage is available, that's the only reason to get a 32 or 64 variant.
Plus, that extra storage is WAY over priced. A 32gb micro sd card can be as low as 20 bucks if you shop around. A 64gb can be had for about 50 bucks, so paying an extra 150 for the 64 over the 16 is robbery.

Internal NAND will be faster, bar none, than any SD card on the market. Class 10 or not. Its not a rip off, and it very well could mean the difference between slow loading apps (if they reside on the SD card) and a lagless experience. Just letting you know.
If all you plan to store is media, then by all means go for the minimum and augment with an SD card, but it it NOT robbery to be given far faster storage. It is like the difference between an IDE drive and SATA. No comparison or contest when it comes to board-mounted NAND.
I appreciate all the responses so far. I'm thinking I might just get the 32 GB middle-ground in this case (which is what I did when I bought my to-be-replaced iPhone 4), and it's served me well enough. If the difference between 32 GB and 64 GB ends up being $50.00 I'll likely just pick up the larger one as, at least in Canada, it's a 3-year phone term, so, I might as well add as much life to it as I can up front.
I definitely agree with the NAND vs MSDHC performance. The reason I only question it is that I am, of course, thinking of only doing a media dump on the device. Now, I also plan on loading in direct Blu-ray to 720p files, so, I'm not sure of the performance marker there of pulling 720p content from a MSDHC to the device would be, but I can only imagine my performance would be better realised if I was pulling it direct off the NAND.
I guess it'll come down to price, more than anything. I am not heavy into doing large-media storage, so, I doubt there will be much going on where I really need to hit 128 GB of space, but, you know, having the option is nice, especially when travelling around. At least Samsung didn't decide to get foolish and only offer the internal NAND as options, MSDHC is definitely a very nice feature in a device that's intended to bridge the smartphone and tablet market.
...it will also come down to what AT&T offers!!!!

It's the same game that has been around for decades now regarding storage space and price. The price per unit of storage is always going down and your usage of said storage is always going up. One day you will be wondering how you lived with anything less than an Exabyte of space and laugh at those who paid $100 per terabyte. There are only relative usage profiles for the space and everyone's budget is also relative. For me, I will be rocking the 64GB variant with a 64GB micro SD card and claim 128GB in 2012... but you sir will have the last laugh at my expense
16gb internal with micro sd is better, so all game data will go to internal sd, while all your important file(pics,mp3,vids etc) in your micro sd(whatever size it is) much safer if something wrong happen to internal sd
32gb way to much, better having a large micro sd than internal sd

Sweeping comment, TROLLING?? I have seen many Micro SD cards from Sandisk reaching upto 100MBps despite being marketed as Class 10. This is VERY IRRESPONSIBLE comment as there is no holy grail engraved in your beloved "NAND" Flash. Its just a type of flash and doesn't dictate in terms of performance unless Samsung's hardware can not utilize the higher speed Micro SD cards.
One major benefit of having 64GB onboard would be Micro SD card will become more redundant if you live with that space for years. Also, you would have an opportunity to have upto 124GB or so when using 64GB Micro SD cards (I am optimistic though that these new phones may support even higher capacity 128GB or so MSD cards may be after some software tweaks by some of our dev gurus here).

I guess there will be a price difference between the 16gb, 32gb and 64gb. Since there is a micro sd slot, what would justify getting a 64gb as opposed to a 16 gb and just load up on the microsd card (guess it would work with a 64gb micro sd).
I also would be very happy when we finally get decent storage options from Samsung, in stead of the crippled 16GB + 64GB micro-sd we get forced down our throats for 2+ years now. There isn't a huge premium either, well there is now with the niche (=almost non-existent) space Samsung has given it in the market. Apple despite its many faults offers all kinds of storage options without restrictions and delays.
I wasn't aware that apple allowed for more storage than the cards we get, coulda swore they were stuck with less storage overall an no removable..... So they have a bigger drop box? Is this what your saying

I recently bought an iPad 3 with a continuous storage capacity of 64GB. Took me a month to fill it up, in a very straightforward manner. 12GB of this are Spotify music files which will be gone in 3 weeks or so, giving me some breathing space again. I bought the iPad because there still isn't a comparable (let alone better) high-end Android tablet available. Besides its superior screen, appearance and many more (exclusive) quality apps it is also the mediocre storage options I see offered for most Android tablets (especially those made by Samsung), which together were a big reason to go for Apple on the tablet front.
Mobile phone wise I have been a loyal Samsung customer for over 2 years, and would not trade my nearly 1 year old Samsung Galaxy Note for anything besides perhaps the SGN 2. I see the SGN 2 as their flagship model and a strong contender for best phone on the market. There hasn't been an Audio quality test on GSM Arena yet, but so far the only real let down of the Note 2 I have noticed is Samsungs continued budget approach to storage options.
The 64GB micro-sd in my SGN has been overly crammed for ages with vector maps, music clips etc. etc. But even if I didn't continually have to clean up the SGN suffers greatly from having only 16GB main storage. Many games (or Spotify for that matter) you cannot install/use with so little available main storage. The only option left open is to hack your 64GB to become your main storage, with its own drawbacks and quirks. I definitely don't want this cheap skate solution. So the only solid solution we get offered (again) is to buy a 32GB or 64GB version abroad (ebay) for a $$$$ premium when it becomes available in due cause.
Im not sure you understand math... To say im trolling and then claiming the 64gb ipad 3 memory is somehow larger than 64+ 16...samsung, hell if you get the 64 gb version of the samsung you have literally double the memory of the isheep
64 is not greater than 80...and i can move the 64 on the card to another device if i want; get a decent card instead of a crap class 2/4 and youll understand.

I think you need to re-read his original post. -sigh- I know I'm feeding the troll here but I'll do it anyway.
He is saying that, Apple presents and releases the phone with all memory options available. With the iPhone you get 32/64gb variants right off the bat. You don't have to worry or wait for months at a time for a phone with more memory to come out.
Samsung has changed their website for the Note 2. It now says that it only comes in a 16gb version.
It used to say 16/32/64 gb versions. Now it only says 16gb.
I figured that if anyone was holding out for a different version, there might not be a point.

Yeah I noticed that a while back that in one of our "playbook's" (20 page sprint propaganda newsletter) so I went to samsungs page to learn more about it and they had those models listed while our playbook said it only came in 16gb. I figure with a 64gb sd theres no need for that much storage. I just stream all my music from google play / pandora / i<3raido and use that unlimited data plan for streaming netflix and crunchyroll. Using it for all its worth
They would cost more then people would be willing to pay.
Although in typical Samsung fashion it will come out later in different colors.

I wouldn't interpret it that way. They probably took down references to the 32gb and 64gb versions of the phones because they don't want to Osborne the sales of the 16gb models, and because of pressure from carriers who are getting heat about not having the higher capacity versions. In the UK there have been complaints against Samsung for false advertising (a crime there) based on featuring the higher end versions in ads but not making them available; Samsung changed their ads in the UK in response to these complaints.
Whats more interesting is the fact that on the global site it lists 1 step tasking/multitasking features which is absent from the US versions.
I will be pretty peeved if that feature does not make it to the US versions!

I would have preferred the 32gb version as I had the GS3 32gb. Truthfully though, I never touched the internal memory. I think for me, it's more the idea of simply having 32gb. I store everything to extsdcard anyways.

I've been holding off on getting one of these as I don't want to purchase one and then find out that the 32 or 64 GB version gets released a few weeks or a month later.
I just wonder if they took down the reference to the larger models because it's not currently available.
I would probably just go with the 16 GB version and stick a 64 GB card in it, but I don't want to run into problems with running out of room for APPS on the internal memory, which I've heard might be an issue.

My 32gb S3 still has 27gb of free internal memory.
I'm not sure what Samsung's plans are but as much as I would prefer at least 32gb, I'm coping quite well with the 16gb version.

That's good to know and helps me lean more towards just getting the 16 GB version instead of waiting and holding out.
Can I ask roughly how many apps you've got installed?
I have over 200 user apps installed, including a 1.4GB game. I still have almost 6 GB available. I guess if you want to install a bunch of really big games, you might need more, but 16GB is probably enough for the vast majority of people.

There is a way to switch the memory from internal to external and vice versa.
It works on the GS3 so it shouldn't be a problem for the note2.

Sprint guy told me the rumor is that the 32gb will be out around black Friday. I don't really trust the source but wish they would announce it. I really want at least 32gb plus my 64gb SD card. I could get by with less but always fill it up with Flashing and backups.

That's interesting. It would have made more sense to handle it by releasing then all at the same time. That's what they did with the GS3.
I'm thinking they aren't going to release them this time. I could see the black Friday thing but they'd piss off a lot of people who are outside of their return window. I've been stressing out a bit because I'd prefer the 32gb version and in some weird way, it's comforting that it appears as though it's not available.

64gb class 10 Sandisk is $40 at Radio Shack. Some might have gotten a $10 off coupon in the mail. Can't go wrong.
The 32GB and 64GB Euro versions are now listed as pre-order... personally I'll be holding out for the larger versions...

I picked up the note 8.0 the other day and I'm really enjoying it, but I looked in the storage section in settings and was perplexed. It shows only 9.78GB of total internal storage available. Is everyone getting that little space? My Nexus 7 had something like 13.5GB free, and my Note 10.1 had around 12GB free. I know you lose a bit due to file system format, etc...but over 6GB of 16? That seems messed up.

I saw in another thread in one of these xda Note 8.0 forums about folks mentioning the same thing, so I'm pretty sure it is not just you. Yeah, it is disappointing.

4GB of bloat above and beyond vanilla Android??? In a mobile OS like Android, that's a lot of bloat when you figure the average large app (not including games) is still near or under 25MB. That's about 160 apps at 25MB each!
Anyway, it kind of sucks. If they are going to eat up that much space with sheet they should make it with 24GB of storage so that when they sell a 16GB device it actually has 16GB!!! Ah well...I'm just *****ing now.
Don't have my device on me, but a df might tell how much of the /system partition's actually in use. My memory is that it's only about 60% or so.
parted can probably be used to resize /system but unless it's adjacent to /data, you'll want to take very careful notes before attempting that surgery.
Fortunately, you can use uni-init or term-init.sh to enable init.d scripts and then mount the sdcard as if it were internal storage. Most of my app data is written to my sdcard using that technique.
But we have an sd card slot, my N7 doesn't. Thats a nice addition to have.

Its not just bloat (apps) but OS (ROM) itself takes up more memory once the manufacturers start to add their proprietary "skins" to vanilla Android. Think of the extra features like Multi-Window and Smart Stay. That stuff takes up space, and the stock ROM is pretty huge (over 1 GB, I believe).
Not to mention, Sammy probaby reserves a chunk more on the ROM partition, in case they want to add more features on future updates.
Its very much the same on HTC devices, as well. On my One X, its also got 16 GB of memory, but only 9.93 GB available as storage.

It would be nice if they actually reported the "user accessible storage" amount, like saying "16 GB memory, with 10 GB user accessible". Since saying how much memory the device has, without telling us how much of it is sucked up by the OS, is kinda useless information.
It would have also been nice, if they had offered a 32 GB version in the US.
No companies report true information like that. Just like cars they give you hp at crank, instead of at wheels, where there is around a 20% difference. Same concept here.

Its more like the car company telling you the gas tank holds 16 gallons, when you can in fact only "use" 10 gallons of the gas tank.
I was trying out the demo set of Note 8 the other day at many different shops and were shock to see the the "available storage" on all the Note 8 were about 3.5GB to 3.8GB. I thought that being a demo set, it could be that there were many apps and useless stuff installed by other users. I've tried deleting useless data and uninstalling apps on 1 of them (resetting options were greyed out in settings) and still couldn't go above 4GB. I asked the staff and they confirmed that the "available storage" is that low. My question is whether the Note 8 used for demo were "different" from those that were for sale. It's quite unbelievable that all the Note 8 I saw (about 10 numbers at different shops) having so low storage available. That's one major reason I have not get my set yet.

Looking at the numbers your talking about, it looks like that demo unit had 8GB of internal memory. The units that are available for purchase are 16gb units and have about 10GB of free space on them for apps etc. In addition to this you also have the microSD card slot that allows for extra storage for media files etc but not applications.
If you are willing to root your device, you are able to use external storage for app data as well though. I should be receiving my 16gb wifi note 8.0 this evening (fingers crossed it has been delivered to the store) and will be using a 64gb microSD card in conjuntion with an app called FolderMount in order to use it to transfer application data from the internal storage thus allowing me to install more apps and games.
If your holding out for a 32gb model you may be waiting a while though as the website customer services and samsung store employees told me that they are not aware of a release day for a higher capacity device.
The storage data I talk about is true for the UK, I dont know if it would be the same where you are, but from what I can tell, all note 8.0s are 16gb capaciity at the moment. Hope that helps.

Thanks. I will go back to check with store on whether their demo set were the 8GB or 16GB version. I've googled for the tech spec on Note 8 and all comes with 16GB or 32GB. The nearest match to 8GB will be on a Tab2. Thanks again and I'm from Singapore.
Alright, I have checked with the store assistance and it was confirmed that at hit on display were Wi-Fi only and it's only at 8GB. I'm a happy owner of Note 8 now and it has 8.7GB of available storage.

When I went to Best Buy to pick up a Note 10.1 2014, they only had the 16 gb model. I could have waited, or picked it up somewhere else, but I wanted to take advantage of Best Buy's financing (18 months no interest) and I hate waiting for things.
After installing all of my apps and downloading the data for them, I have about 6 gb left. The problem is, I read a lot of comics. A typical comic in the Comixology app will run you about 100 mb or so. I delete many of them when I have read them, but I fall behind on my reading fairly regularly and accumulate quite a few. I also have a lot of articles in Pocket that I'm behind on and that takes about 600 mb.
Apps to SD is a myth on Samsung devices. I have confirmed that when you move an app to SD, it just moves it to a folder called "emulated" and really doesn't free up any space. Add to that that Pocket's "store cache on SD" feature isn't working and Comixology won't store comics on the external SD and I can basically only use the SD card slot for movies and music. So, I'm wodering: Will 16 (9) GB be enough? Or do I need to take this thing back and get the 32 gb model?
My real question is: How are those of you with the 16 gb model getting by? Is your internal space filled up? Are you wishing you had the bigger model?
Ive had other tabs that were 16g and as long as I was mindful of where I stored my books and photos I never ran inyo problems. I also make sure my email only syncs 5 days. With my work and personal accounts I get way to many. For reading I use Moonreader because unlike aldiko it doesn't force me to put my books on the device. Hope this helped

I have had 16 GB tablets as well, but they generally have much more of that 16 gb available. All of the touchwiz and SPen features leave us with just over 8 GB on this thing. There's also the issue that, if we fill it up completely, it will hurt performance. So we really only have about 6-7 total out of the box.
I'm taking it back and getting the 32GB model. I love the tablet, but I need internal space.

You can use Folder Mount to move programs to the SD Card too.

Just got a 16GB at Best Buy for the same reason as OP (wanted to use financing, didn't want to wait) - haven't done anything with it yet, but I'm getting more and more nervous that I'm going to run into trouble with the storage space - I expected to be able to move more onto an external SD card, but it sounds like that's not so workable after all?
If I root, I have more options, but I'm reluctant to do that if I don't have to... Anyone else have a similar conundrum?

Not sure if this is an option for you, but I bought the 32 gb model from Newegg with my preferred account. 12 months no payment or interest. And no sales tax unless you live in CA. Taking the 16 back to Best Buy. Better too much space than not enough.

So you have the 16 GB and over 11 GB free? That I can live with, and it's about what I would have expected from the OS and bloatware... I can't decide if I want to try fot the 32 or just deal with the 15 (I'm not going to game with it, and movies/media I'd run off the SD card no matter what)...

you'e kind of answered it yourself tbh...Gaming will take up the majority of the space of a tablet. Applications are normally around 20mb to a max of 100mb and some rare ones larger. Games on the other hand well the high graphic games anyways are over a 1GB so space would be an issue if you were to play loads of games.
honestly if you have no intentions of gaming 16GB would be plenty for you although if you could afford the 32GB then go for it since its always nice to have loads of space.
Ofcourse only you can really decide but I'm holiding out for a 32GB because I would like to have atleast a handful of 1GB games to keep me busy when I'm at the airport waiting for my flight or on the flight itself.
