[Q] Download folder full of .msg files - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
A friend has brought me his Desire Z (stock 2.3.3 ROM, no modification applied) because he can't open the Download folder on his sdcard. I plugged it in to my pc and adb shows it's full of files named title-20120904-200132.msg. I have found title is the actual subject of an email he got on July 26 (I have removed the real text because it's long and totally irrelevant) and thinking the numbers at the end represent a timestamp, they're approximately 15 minutes apart, which is the frequency his mail app is set to sync, from July 26 until today.
What's more, since August 14 there are also images piled up in the same way: image005-20120814-101443.gif, image001-20120814-101443.png, image001-20120814-101443_01.png. I was thinking they're attachments, but the Mail app show none for the said message, and it's interesting they're missing for 3 weeks.
There is no newer message from that sender or with the same subject and his desktop mail client doesn't have any problem with the message. In fact, neither does HTC's Mail with opening and displaying it, but since the subject is the name of those files, there must be a link between the two
Does anybody know what's with the .msg files, how they ended up in the Download folder and why there are so many of them?
Thanks!

[Q] Gmail App not fetching attachments

I'm not certain this is an issue specific to the Evo or the Gmail app in general, but...I can not preview attachments (jpeg's specifically) in most emails dated within the last week. Almost everything older than a week previews/downloads fine, with a few exceptions. This issue occurs whether I'm using 3G or WiFi.
Any ideas?
edit: To be clear, what happens is that the Gmail app gets stuck on the "Fetching Attachment, please wait..." window indefinitely on the attachments in question. To be more clear...these attachments open fine on my computer. This problem is specific to the Gmail app.
I'm having exactly the same problem with the gmail app on my Dell Streak, this only started after i updated to Android 2.2
I had that happen this morning, when I tried to open a pdf that was attached to an email in my Gmail account. I decided to uninstall Adobe Reader, reboot, and reinstall. Once done, everything works just fine. Not sure what you should do ... just giving my experience and perhaps a little insight.
Same issue on two different TMobile G2's. On the first, I never got it to pull an attachment. On the second, it worked for the first day or two. I thought the first must be a lemon, but now it has started on this one.
The only thing I can correlate is that the last attachment I 'fetched' had to open the included QuickOffice.

App for deleting txt msgs past a certain # of days

Has anyone seen a good app for deleting, or autodeleting txt messages in your inbox/sent folders once they reach a certain number of days in age? Auto or manual, anything that's simple and straight to the point?
I see an example of this here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=549764 but the link to the 1.1 version that supports the sent folder is down.
I found an app called "msgCleaner" on marketplace. I think it was $1.99. It has settings for how often you want it to automatically run and up to how old you want messages kept. I have my set to run once a day and delete anything over 3 days old. I have noticed it sometimes doesn't delete all the older sent messages, but you can go into the program and manually delete them since it lists them chronologically (not threaded). Sounds like this is what you're looking for.

Mail attachments not downloading fully

I have been having the oddest issue the post few months.
I get emails all the time with an attached PDF (a report) via pop mail setup. I had it set in the settings to only download like 22k of the email or so...so it would ask you when opening it, if you want to download the whole email on next send/rec.
The last few months or so though, the phone would ask but then it would stop at 45k (true size is about 60-90k) and say the download is complete and show that its a pdf. Trying to open it will lead to an error stating the attachment could not be found. It asks if you would like to re-download the attachment but doesn'0t do anything. It shows the green arrow next to the email in the list showing its in wait to download but nothing ever happens or changes.
I finally set it to download the FULL email and not partial, and it works for txt/html parts of emails but not with the attachments. No matter the size of the attachment, it always says 45k next to the attachment's name and won't open.

[Q] Desire Z & Exchange - Help needed !

Hello all,
I'm new to the forum and to this site as well.
I just bought the Desire Z and it looks like a nice one
When configure the phone I found an interesting problem that I have no idea how to over come and need your help.
When I sync the phone with my exchange mail in the office it is sync only my inbox and not any other sub folders I created in my mail box, unless I'm going to each one of the sub folders and sync in manually.
In my older phone (Touch pro2) I use to get it done automatically.
Is any one can help me on this ?
Another small question is how I can activate the screen lock on this phone ?
Thanks for speedy answers and sorry if I post it wrongly.
Regards,
Oren

screenlock is in the settings->security...
look in the "mail" settings. you have to select each folder then after that it will autosync. how many folders do you have?
I don't know if their latest HTC ROM update has changed this, but unfortunately the ROM my HTC Desire Z came with (1.34.405.5) can't synchronise other folders automatically. Whilst viewing email you can press menu and select other folders, but it'll download the email then, there's no way to make it do it automatically.
The stock Android email client (which the person above me is talking about) CAN synchronise other folders, but unless you're prepared to change ROMs (or at the very least root it and try and swap in the stock Android mail application) I don't think there's much of a solution.
However, a word of warning which might not make you want to bother, the synchronisation works differently to how it did on Windows Mobile (I previously had a Touch Pro2 as well!): On WM you could set a folder to sync, but only the Inbox would alert/notify, the other folders would just be there ready downloaded whenever you wanted them. However, the stock Android client will sync the extra folders AND alert you whenever new email arrives in them.
To me this was a pain in the neck because I have Exchange sending messages to some folders that I will read later/don't care about when they come in (information messages etc) so of course I have to unsync those folders now because it'll alert me if something goes into them, I only wanted them there ready downloaded for when I wanted to check.
On the plus side the stock app can also "hide" folders from view, but then it also can't move messages to another folder (which the HTC version can!)... If only the mail client had features from both...

Wow ! Thank you so much for such a post !
For me it is kind of a must have as I travel a lot and need to see the mails coming (by the way, on the TP2 there was a green number of mails near each sub folder) and not to sync manually about 25-30 sub folders .
will try to speak to HTC people - I will update of any new ideas
Cheers

I run IT support for about 95-100 traveling salesmen, almost all of them require mobile email support.
This issue has come up a few times now for IPhones, the way it's corrected with that is by setting the days to sync from the default 3days to no limit. It's not the best fix, as most of these people with this issue are dealing with exchange mailboxes around 5gb's (ceo's and regional managers), so it just eats into the phones space, but it works.
Possibly it will work for androids as well.
I have a tmobile g2, but I use google for mailhosting, exchange support isn't quite ready for any of the big 3 phones (BB iphone and android).

Thanks for this, So there is no answer even not in the market ?
Interesting !
i'm personally hating how exchange simply doesn't work on android, atleast on virtuous ROM for the desire z.
After almost 2 hours of telling it to create an exchange account on my phone and finally be able to create one, I run into a problem that it goes on a refresh spree and spams my notification with the one unread email that I have over and over again until i delete the damn account. I hope hotmail gets their crap together and support imap or atleast get their damn exchange server to work properly.

Question Developer Options -> Memory Usage Question

EDIT: I just noticed there is a forum for the "Ultra" S22. Would a Mod move this for a noob please?
Hey! I just got the S22 Ultra 256gig a couple weeks ago for my Wife and I, and I've just begun exploring deeper into Android systems.
I wound up in Developer Options -> Memory -> Memory Usage. For my phone I created a new Gmail and samsung account for to be as fresh as possible. My Wife used the smart swap to bring over pictures and created a new email as well.
What I noticed, is seen in these pictures here - the screen shot pictures are from my phone, and the following one taken right after is from my phone of her screen.
Also, there is a "com.qualcom.atfwd" on both but when I click on each, I just have 1 "com.qualcomm.telephony" using just over 6mb under details and hers has 2 "com.qualcomm.telephony" under details, each one just over 6mb.
Could she have brought something wierd over from her Moto G7?
{Mod edit: Quoted post has been deleted}
Not really, just more to look into now. I made a secure folder and also used private share for a file on my phone, and later noticed I too have an extra telephony as well as acore in my memory usage.
She doesn't know about these, so I wonder what else could have had her phone showing 2 of each.
Edit: I did notice night before last, I took her phone to look into things more (and she doesn't use a password) and when I when to swipe up to open it, it asked for a pattern unlock that was the same kind for a secure folder unlock. This was after I installed a secure folder for her but I was just turning on the phone, not trying to access the folder.
Make sure in Contacts app, under accounts to sync it only has 1 listed. Mine was syncing to Google, Samsung, and something else.
