I have been having the oddest issue the post few months.
I get emails all the time with an attached PDF (a report) via pop mail setup. I had it set in the settings to only download like 22k of the email or so...so it would ask you when opening it, if you want to download the whole email on next send/rec.
The last few months or so though, the phone would ask but then it would stop at 45k (true size is about 60-90k) and say the download is complete and show that its a pdf. Trying to open it will lead to an error stating the attachment could not be found. It asks if you would like to re-download the attachment but doesn'0t do anything. It shows the green arrow next to the email in the list showing its in wait to download but nothing ever happens or changes.
I finally set it to download the FULL email and not partial, and it works for txt/html parts of emails but not with the attachments. No matter the size of the attachment, it always says 45k next to the attachment's name and won't open.

on live or hotmail from there phone
I haven't been able to get it to work on Gmail either... it will open up the attachment, for example, but I can't figure out how to download it, despite the fact that I have the PIE Attachment Download cab installed...
I know that when I get emails, attachments are not downloaded immediately, in order to save space. You might need to view the message, click on the view attachment link at the bottom of the message, then reconnect in order to send/receive data. This is the way it works on pie, but I am not sure about Live, since I don't use it. It is worth a look-sy, though.

Something to check into but you can also, go into your email account on your phone, click on Menu--tools--options--account settings--download size settings--(Then make adjustments) Be sure download attachments is selected and message limit is at whatever setting you choose.
Post what occurs or what worked.

I don't seem to have that option
there was a post made a long time ago, about automatically downloading pictures in the email boxes (whether in imap or pop3), so you dont have to click the "download internet pictures link" every time
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3627632
it looks like that has never been answered, if anyone does have an answer great...
but i'm actually looking for a 2nd thing, is there anyway to download all the internet pictures when you click the link, but then actually have those images somehow stored as cache, or saved in the phone until its deleted. the reason i ask is this, sometimes i have emails that are filled w/ lots of pictures, but they also have a ton of text as well. so i'll read what i can of the email, and if i can't finish it i'll close it. but then when i go back to it, i have to click to download the images again. basically i'm looking for some type or regedit or something that would possibly work, that would allow the pictures to be instantaneously displayed every time i go back to the particular email after closing messages.
I had 2 new mails in my Gmail. I read one, and couldn't see the other one, even though while I am in the vanilla Gmail app it still says 1 new mail at the top of my inbox. Ordinarily I would have just assumed a glitch and moved on.
Except right now I'm sitting in front of my computer and logged on via my computer. Sure enough, I do have a new mail that I still haven't read. I go back to my phone and the notification bar isn't showing any new mail but inside the Gmail app it shows one unread email. Though the view shows everything greyed out and the new mail which came today is not visible.
No refresh, exiting and re-entering or moving around the screen can fix it. I wish I could keep it like this to test what is going on, but I need to read and respond to the mail.
This is a strange one.
Same problem
I hadn't yet worked out the details, but I am almost certain that I've had the same problem. I certainly seem to see nothing new, even although the app says 1 unread.
Looks a bit like a sync error with the cloud. Anyone else got any thoughts?
[EDIT]
I just looked at my Desire and it told me I had 8 unread messages. Opening GMail it said the same in the title bar but only showed 6.
I opened GMail on my Mac and sure enough, I had 8 messages; there was nothing obviously different with the 2 missing ones.
I used Search on my phone to look for the 'missing' messages and to my surprise, they came up! So they are there on the phone, but not showing in the list? So my idea about a sync error is not so good!

Are the extra emails in the inbox, or do you have a rule which applies a label to them and moves them out of the inbox?
Good suggestion.
I know in my case (I just checked) it wasn't labelled and wasn't due to skip the inbox.
I think I may have had this once before and it is rare. But it is strange.

In my experience it happens sometimes but I have solved opening from the web browser Gmail, then you'll find the unread email. Once the unread email is opened, the notification will disappear. But maybe this is a different situation. I hope this can help you.

Yes, this happens from time to time. It's not a desire thing, it used to happen on my G1. I think it's normally a mail within a threaded mail that does it. Annoying but logging into the gmail website usually reveals the answer.
I had the exact same thing happen, not sure why it does it BUT i found the emails...
So SOLUTION/LOCATION of hidden emails are... in email app press menu, goto view labels and hit All Mail, this shows up the messages that didnt show up in the Inbox...
Hope this helps
I have Tilt2 (touch pro 2) and I have turned off the stock user interface. I do not use even Titanium, just vanilla today screen. In these settings I encounter two problems and wonder if anyone can help me with these:
1. I get say a new email message and device notifies me about it in the task bar. I click to read new messages but instead of opening the new message or at least the email account where the new messages are, my device by default opens Microsoft Outlook email folder. I have to switch manually to say Yahoo/Google/Hotmail to read the new message. Is it possible instead of this behavior to view after the click the new message or at least have the device open the email folder where the new messages are?
2. While viewing an e-mail, the default settings are: 1. "Internet messages are not downloaded. Click to download on next connection". 2. "Click or tap here to scroll to the right of the message" or something like that if a message is html and does not fit the screen. So how can I make my phone to 1. download the whole email with pictures without additional taps. 2. To allow me to view the whole content without tapping on a link to allow right scrolling?
Hello, XDA members, can someone help me? Thank you!
Hello!
A friend has brought me his Desire Z (stock 2.3.3 ROM, no modification applied) because he can't open the Download folder on his sdcard. I plugged it in to my pc and adb shows it's full of files named title-20120904-200132.msg. I have found title is the actual subject of an email he got on July 26 (I have removed the real text because it's long and totally irrelevant) and thinking the numbers at the end represent a timestamp, they're approximately 15 minutes apart, which is the frequency his mail app is set to sync, from July 26 until today.
What's more, since August 14 there are also images piled up in the same way: image005-20120814-101443.gif, image001-20120814-101443.png, image001-20120814-101443_01.png. I was thinking they're attachments, but the Mail app show none for the said message, and it's interesting they're missing for 3 weeks.
There is no newer message from that sender or with the same subject and his desktop mail client doesn't have any problem with the message. In fact, neither does HTC's Mail with opening and displaying it, but since the subject is the name of those files, there must be a link between the two
Does anybody know what's with the .msg files, how they ended up in the Download folder and why there are so many of them?
Thanks!
