I'll be in Malaysia next week with my trust nexus and will have internet (via an xcom global mifi) and was hoping that GPS would work without a phone signal. Last time I traveled to Germany with my sprint touch pro 2 I learned the hard way that a 15min lock time made the phone useless without a signal. Any ideas?
Also I was planning on forwarding my google voice number to my skype mobile number and just running skype for all calls- sound like a good solution? thanks in advance
As long as you have an internet connection it won't take the long time to lock. Doesn't have to be a cell connection, WiFi will do just fine.
GV forwarding to Skype should work just fine too. Just make sure the Skype app is set to run in the background.
I actually downloaded NavFree from the playstore (there's 2 version; one for USA and one for international). You will have to download the maps to your phones internal storage prior to running the nav, but it worked for me flawlessly here in Cali, USA. Don't even have a sim card in my Nexus and I got it to guide me without a hick up. Almost instant lock too.
thanks!! 2 more questions
1) I couldn't find a map for Malaysia for Navfree- any suggestions?
2) Do you think I could put the sim card from the xcom global mifi into my nexus and use the APN setting to get data directly on my phone? I will give it a try when I get there
Requires a lot more work if you are not running a custom rom...
Upgrade to a custom jelly bean rom, then use the new version of Google maps which will allow you to save maps offline (no data connection)

i know that when i set up the GPS to work on my phone i had to put in some IP adresses and such. does this mean it is using my data? i have an unlimited plan so it doesnt matter here in the states. i travel though so i would like to leave my phone in airplane mode but still use the GPS. i have IGO8 on there so it doesnt need internet like google maps does. i want it in airplaine mode so i dont get calls or texts, i just want GPS, thats all.
I don't believe that the GPS will work in airplane mode & I know that mine will not. Airplane mode is designed not to transmit anything. You can however simply turn of the radio via the comm manager
yup
unless you unlock you will be using data for gps. search for the unlocks to figure that one out. otherwise use your data plan for gps
is it not already unloaked? how could it work at all on Verizon if it were not unlocked?
most carriers have the GPS locked on the phone and you have to pay a fee (mines telus and i think its 10$), but after i unlocked my phone and flashed it with NFS rom then it "free" becuase GPS does not use data to transmit info it, uses the radio and that a "free of charge". Most people that have verizon, there is a special way of getting the GPS to work, search the forums and for sure you will find info to how to unlock and properly get the GPS to work.
Latest rom from bell uses unlocked radio, tried with stock rom from bell and GPS runs fine (phone wasn't activated when I tried)
Telus' rom uses the same radio, so I asume that if you'd load the latest *official rom and installed Garmin (or any other GPS soft) it would work.
But while you're at it, why not crack that badboy so you can run any rom out there!
Latest release, either WM6.1 or 6.5, are pretty neat!
Hi guys. Simple question here:
Always thought it was strange but never had the time to check if it was actually a Apple service only. Is it possible to obtain "My Location" through Google Maps app or Latitude, whatever, only with 3G on. I mean having Wi-fi and GPS disabled, wasn't it supposed to 3G be enough to obtain my phone's location?
Yesterday my brother who owns an Iphone4 did it and i thought "how come i never couldn't with my xperia arc"?
Is it any wrong configuration on my phone, or a google configuration or is it just a service xperia arc/xperia/android phones don't have?
Thanks.
Google Maps - works over GPS or 3G(HSDPA,EDGE)
Latitude also can work like one above..
But, if you have wirelles, and GPS disabled...accuracy will be around 300-500m.
while GPS accuracy is 2m
I always use Google maps with the data switch on. I usually have the GPS switch on also. Using just the mobile phone tower to use google maps doesn't accurately represent your true location, only the closest mobile phone tower the phone is receiving the signal from.
I have done this in the past, meaning using Google maps while using only the mobile phone network, since my phone at the time did not have built-in GPS.

Thanks, electrash, you are spot on!

No problem, try it and let me know.
P.s (sometimes it takes longer to get your location max 1-2min)
So meaning that something is wrong in my phone. I have it updated and non root. I have 3G (HSDPA) on and the phone is unable to obtain "My Location" and asking me to turn wireless or GPS on. What can i do to fix it?
but do you have 3G MB packet (pay for 200mb or etc) or you have flat internet on phone like me?
I have a 300mb per month subscription. Is there a difference here? The 3G or data connection isn't the same in both cases?
yes, but sometimes if you run out of MB Packet this wont work, i dont know why.
I have to go now, when im back i will find some app to test your phone (market seacrh)
Till then, have a nice day
Everything is working now. I needed to check in the location configuration the use of wireless and data connection to obtain position. LOL My bad! Thanks for all the help anyway! Cumps
Glade to hear that
Hello,
I have Galaxy nexus factory rom 4.2.2 (unlocked and rooted) and I am very angry with GPS offline locking. I was used from other devices like HTC that all I need is just to turn on GPS and it will get the signal right away without a need to download any data for better locking. And I don't understand what it can't be that simple on Galaxy nexus GSM.
If I start for example "GPS status" app and this app is not able to download GPS location it WON'T lock ( it gets for example 3-4 satellites for a while and then all satellites disappears and it starts locking for satellites again.. - finds few satellites and drop them afterward but never lock if no data connection....) etc. ! I also tried to reset GPS data. But if I let it use data connection (wifi) it works right away like charm!
I don't really understand how it works. I guess it needs to download some kind of first lock data location according to my carrier or location internet provider. I am using NAVIGATOR for GPS navigation.
question 1:
is there any way how to make the phone work just by turning GPS on without using any data connection ?
question2:
If not, is there any way how I can pre-download the GPS location so I don't need to download it from the internet but just load it from the saved file or something?
I was searching but didn't find this kind of problem.
Thanks for any help.
I'll piggy-back on that thread since I'm having the same problem.
I moved my Galaxy Nexus (GSM, Maguro) from the stock Android to Cyanogenmod over a year ago, and noticed that GPS just won't work when I'm in a foreign country, ie. without a data connection while it works fine in my home country with a data connection.
Even after riding around outside for a whole day in open fields, GPS still won't locate me without a data connection.
I also noticed that while travelling abroad, GPS will locate me within a few seconds after I connect to the Net through a wifi connection.
Before I get a GPS + Glonass smartphone, I was wondering if someone knows if the problem is software-related and has a fix.
Here's what I'm currently running:
Android 4.4.4
CyanogenMod 11.0-Installer-XNPQ32P
Baseband version I9250XXLJ1
Thank you.
I currently have two HTC M8's that i have activated on AT&T. They have worked flawlessly for a long time, but I do have one current lingering issue on both devices. As of now, I am unable to access most google services that run off of the google.com domain, but only when i am connected to LTE. This includes most acount syncing capabilities, using the play store, using google search, or even just accessing google.com in a browser. All the while i still retain full access to any other site/services. All of this functionality works just fine on HSPA+ and wifi. Also to make it even more complex, It only seems to be an issue when the phone is using LTE band 17, when using LTE band 2 it works just fine. To add one more bit of oddity to the situation, a tracert from the phone to google.com goes through just fine with a low ping.
Things i have done to remedy the situation/rule out a carrier issue:
New sim card.
My sim card will access the play store just fine on another AT&T phone.
Used a VPN for a different route.
Factory reset through recovery menu.
Tracert to google.com, play.google.com works fine.
Edit1: Just thought to try something else. Set up wireless hotspot on my phone and connected my laptop. All google websites work just fine through there and tracert shows same results.
Sent in a ticket to HTC about it and they said they forwarded it to their engineers and i should be getting a call in a week with "something".
Im kind of at a loss and im open to any suggestions or ideas.
Hello everyone, I've been lurking here all weekend as I've been trying to stabalize this phone I bought off of Kijiji. Right off the bat, when I
installed the sim I forgot to turn off the phone . Haha, I was extremely tired & only when I removed the battery (of course) did I realize what
had happened. Ever since the sim has been in, the signal has been unstable every 5-10-15 to 30 minutes (this is without running POGO). By
unstable, I mean both data & most importantly calls. I won't be able to make or receive, when I place the call during these failures it will
say dialing, connecting... and just continue until "call ended". And when I"m called, outside of LTE just say we've forwarded your call to VM. On
LTE, it will say something along the lines of this customer isn't able to receive your call at the moment.
Troubleshooting Attempts:
- Tried SIM in a different phone & it worked perfectly
- Power Cycled Several times, Factory reset it 3 times
- Set up 2 APN's (sorry can't link yet, but google them if u like they're ez to find. LG G4 VM Canada APN's)
- ^ Tried both, both unstable, but PDA gives most stability
- I've registered to all available networks under GSM/HSPA/LTE all unstable
- Connected Automatically & Manually to GSM/HSPA/LTE together & separately. All unstable
- Phone is not in Air Plane mode

Now, I have just recently come across a very interesting development. Using the App Network Signal Refresh Lite,
In pokemon go I've been able to transition to a signal that will stay solid for up to 5 minutes, 3 on average. It will still
lose connection, but will usually reconnect in-app in moments. I do have to minimize it & do a refresh again in NSRL
every now and then but it's a big improvement. Before hand, when I would use go, the service (calls included) would
completely rip in seconds.
So... any ideas? I'll appreciate any & all help.
I've flashed every stock rom I can for the device too, but the signal continues to drop regardless of the OS. Some error messages I' ve gotten are emergency calls only, no service & service disabled but usually it just shows that its connected to virgin but I can't make or receive calls.
Other than the cellular service, everything else with the phone works perfectly. The wifi, the camera, the gps, etc it would be a shame to have to get rid of it but the essentials first. I have to be able to make calls.
Please, anyone, any ideas? Are there any apps I can install to fix the broadband or something.
It won't remain stable no matter what I do... and no one has any solutions
tips, thoughts or ideas? Really regretting this purchase now... It's been a
month and I still cannot get a stable connection. This is ridiculous.

You may want to check out this link (https://lg-firmwares.com/lg-h812-firmwares/) for an H81220X Bell/Virgin kdz (H81220x_00_1122.kdz) and use LGUP-NEW to install it. It might help but if not, you may be facing a hardware issue ...
Solved lg g4 losing signal
I bought my lg g4 K450 and within days l noticed my phone was losing signal constantly. By the grace of God l tried this and it worked.
Go to settings---Then to Network---To more---To Mobile networks----To network operators. Select search network. All available networks will be displayed after a thorough scan. Select your network provider with a WCDMA instead of GSM and it will register it. After it done registering, restart the phone. and u are good to go. It worked for me, if it works for u give glory to God.
