[DISCUSSION] Cyanogenmod 9.1.0 - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Figured I'd start this thread since I didn't see one. So far his has been running perfectly for me using stock kernel and whatnot. I do have one issue though. It seems as if speaker volume has decreased with this release. Anyone else experiencing this?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda premium

Had it flashed for a few hours now (haven't changed from the kernel it flashes with).
I don't notice any difference however I rarely even use the external speakers. I usually have it plugged into my car via aux cable for music. So I might be unable to make a good comparison of it since I rarely use it.
However these are the notable changes I've noticed:
- Less battery drain (literally same settings/apps used rom toolbox pro to backup/restore them, haven't added or removed anything)
- Camera opens every time now (previously crashed on CM9RC2 and prior versions)
- Faster power-off
- Faster ADB connection (this might just be my computer)
I'm not sure what's on the full changelog as I rarely look, but this one seems much more stable over CM9RC2 (obviously, since so many new changes were committed).
All-in-all, I have to say I'm happy with this version until we get our first stable release candidate of CM10. There's almost nothing to complain about.

Good good. I'm having an awesome experience with it including battery life. Indont listen to music through my speakers much either lol I mean ringtone and notification loudness. Definitely notice a difference in loudness with it.

Jumping on board and shall be trying this soon. Battery life was one of the things keeping me away from CM9 despite loving it to death. If it was actually improved, consider me a very happy man.

I'm not sure if it's just me or placebo, but the UI feels JB fast on this!

Yea man its about as good as its gonna get IMO. Oh one more thing that battery life screenie I took earlier is from the phones first cycle! It will only get better!! Not to mention I tweaked the ondemand governor to performance settings to make it even faster and smoother! Feel free to try them out yourself. You'll need setCPU.

Also I agree with you about the JB smoothness it isn't a placebo effect. But I can explain it. For some reason JB isn't as smooth as its supposed to be on this phone. If you grab a galaxy nexus with JB on it you'll know what I mean. I flash my home girls gnex with JB updates and I question why its smoother on that device. Maybe its because the gnex CPU and GPU are better than the t989. Not sure but its noticeably smoother. JB has got a ways to go on this phone.

Thanks for the tip. Going to try those settings out now. And I know what you mean. I'm sure our phone has the horsepower under it to make it as smooth as possible, but I guess our drivers aren't as optimized as they should be. Almost bought a GNex during their sale but ended up getting PC parts instead. Our phone will catch up one of these days. But I guess we have fragmentation and manufacturer bloat to blame for that.

HAHA that's hilarious!!! I chose to buy an i5 2500k/Asus tri-sli/8gb gskill instead of buying the gnex!! Haha great minds think alike. It would have been worth it though. I flash my home girls gnex at least 2 times a month and JB is bug free and noticeably smoother than on this phone. Not to say this phones bad. Its gonna have to last me until the galaxy nexus 2 releases.

As I noted in the main dev thread, it's not included, but instead can be downloaded from the Play Store. I can confirm it launches and doesn't force close, which they said it would if you're not on CM9.1, which is required to support it.

Wow, its like stable releases on a monthly basis, gotta love CM team.
Flashing this **** now

upgrading from CM9.0 to CM9.1 didn't work, keeps getting on "finalizing start up" after the upgrade and it stays there forever like 3 hours
tried all kind of things
end up having to simple do a full wipe, and flash CM9.1 clean, and restoring all the backups
now everything is fine, testing BLN to see if it hangs like on 9.0

Hilarious, I too went for 8GB of Gskill, but went with the Gigabyte Z77 (UD3H) and a 2700k instead. Not a fan of SLI/Crossfire setups (bad experiences in the past) . Figure one GTX 670 should do the trick. What cards are you looking to triple SLI? That should be pretty beastly!

Having a mixed experience with 9.1. It was great at first but then started to slow down (noticeable while browsing with a lot of tabs) and heats up fairly quickly. This is without playing with clock speeds.

I posted this in the Dev thread but thought it might be more appropriate here... didn't see this until after.
I had serious battery problems on all CM9 and 10s (including nightlies) for our phone but 9.1 stable is running great on its first full day with TDJ's 6.2 CM9 kernel using badass governor:
Sorry, don't know how to make a thumb.
Only about 10 minutes of screen-on time--stuck in meetings most of the day--but still very impressive. Loving CM9 now that it isn't killing my battery.

Getting sluggish. Time for a new ROM?

Isn't it a good time to experiment with a new ROM when your phone starts slowing down, freezing, & occasionally misbehaving? Which is the most stable ROM in anyone's humble opinions? Thanks

I recommend DW for stability and especially battery life, but definitely try out slickmod if you are looking for topnotch UI performance

Dude roms dont get sluggish after time....it is what the user does. U make it sound like a car that your putting a lot of miles on then when it has to many miles u buy new car. Lol not like that it is definitely user related, why dont u go into recovery and clear cache and dalvik cache maybe that might help

Just use a launcher like ADW and your device will run smooth. Touchwiz is stable but Samsung put a half bake job on optimizing Touchwiz and Snapdragon CPU. If its slow check what apps are running when its slow sometimes too many widgets can easily drain battery and slow down your device.

Overall smoothness

So my friend and I were comparing our phones he has an iPhone, and my phone would do everything faster his phone just did everything smoother, mostly we checked how games ran, his phone in game options ex: scrolling through options and upgrades was way more smooth and responsive while mine had hiccups, gameplay was the same though, but I'm curious why the iPhone is smoother scrolling even outside of its ui into games while my Hercules beats it in specs?

Its not only hardware that determines how smooth it scrolls but also the software
In my opinion the reason I think it scrolls better has to do with apples memory management because it manages ram more smoothly so that's probably why
Also did you install custom kernel on your device?
Because if you did there would be no way you would lose

Lightening zap is a kernel. And as for performance once we officially get project butter everything should be fine then.

well i guess you explained it better than me and thanks!!!
"The iPhone changed things by introducing a dedicated thread with high priority for handling UI rendering, redirecting all power (CPU and GPU) to handling UI element rendering in realtime based on touch input. The result? Smooth-as-butter UI elements, transitions and animations as soon as you touch the screen -- even on older hardware when paired with the latest iOS 5 software. The drawback: everything else, from app downloads to content rendering will pause so the UI can keep that high frame rate, high quality redraw pace."

I've tried every kernel for this phone and most ROMs and there are brief times when the smoothness matches the iPhone, but the consistency just isn't there..
Speed..well that's a different story there are some ROM/kernel/tweak combos that make this phone pretty darn fast

The t989 is faster than the iPhone 4s. Geekbench 2 proves that. But in terms of smoothness the iPhone will ALWAYS win. It's just the way Android is designed. iOS sets resources aside for UI transitions and whatnot and that's why you NEVER see an iPhone stutter and spurt like Android does at times. Give Android another year or so and this issue will be a thing of the past. Unfortunately the only way to resolve this with Android is better hardware... but it's coming!

Even though ptmr3 said that adding the supercharge script was unnecessary I did it anyways just to ease my mind Lol I also added some of the battery saving mods from pmr...I keep my cpu set to ondemand/noop and slightly underclocked..and I am using the stock tw launcher ..
I think that some of the aosp ROMs out there may be slightly faster. but in my experiences they aren't as smooth as this one ..
Experiences may vary from phone to phone so there is no point in saying which ROM is better than the rest but I put my setup so someone can try it for themselves
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
well basically JB is the most stable ROM in my opinion that has the most support otherwise like ICS and GB don't have as much but i think that as soon as Ubuntu gets released the JB roms will be flowing like water but basically that also means that more roms will be smoother and remember that JB hasn't been officially released for our device so what there is currently is made by our awesome devs!

Of ones you listed I like AOKP best. Its just clean. IT feels polished.... Deff a possible daily driver if you don't mind bluetooth problems (which might be fixed by now anyway) point is its a good rom. However the one you didn't list in my title is JELLYBAM
Which I use and love. Its not as polished its a mix of 3 sorces... but its dam good.... plus best bat life I have got from a rom Unless you want one thats stripped down (then you can get more bat life) but I like to use my S3 and I enjoy hell out of it... anyway k
Try jellybam.... if its to not the norm for you just go with AOKP or Im sure cm10 be fine too... I never tried them though..
Later bro. There all good in there own way. Try a few its as simple as a back up lol
I've also tried Jellybam for a few days and battery life has surpassed the other roms I've tried (Tasks' AOKP and Liquidsmooth which I've used for about a month each). I mostly use my phone for web browsing, sms, and skype. I do not call much. I was pretty shocked that I was still at 60% after a day (used about 2 hours of screen time). I've also used ktoonsez kernel with the same settings for each rom.

I think tasks Rom is the most supported but I don't use Bluetooth but if you do search the thread about people who do you might find a good Rom. I love aokp and tasks been my daily driver with updates always for about two months I can't go back to touch wiz I tried. Task and I use ktoonz kernel. Either way the built in kernel is fine I just like under clocking and when playing need for speed over clocking is nice to have hope I helped typing on phone sorry for errors.

Carbon vs liquid. Who has compared the 2

Currently using Liquid rc1 but curious about differences between it and carbon. Doesn't really seem to be much of one on the surface... Wanting to hear from people who perhaps know more about the " under the hood " differences between the two

I personally had a lot of sync issues with Carbon. I switched to Liquid the other day and have really enjoyed it. I did not try the release yesterday by Carbon.
To be 100% honest, though, Team Carbon are former members of Team Liquid and the ROMs are near identical. If you try them both, it's basically the exact same layout and everything except it says " Carbon Controls" in the menu instead of " Liquid Controls".
Try then both though. It's the wonderful fallback of a Nandroid

I actually switched about 20 minutes ago to carbon just to give it a whirl and see what is different. Aside from liquid using nova launcher, there really isn't a noticeable difference.
Carbon doesn't have any issues with lockscreen like liquid does though and that's huge for me so I think I'm gonna roll carbon for a while

I flashed both the latest versions and there are some differences. Carbon doesn't have DPI options whole LS does. LS does have the option to decrease the size of the quick tiles. There are other minor differences as well such as placement of options within the settings menu. Under the hood, I think I read LS sticks more to CM10 coding.
In terms of performance, I can not tell the difference. Both are extremely fast. Both are extremely lightweight. You really can't go wrong with either.
What I think I'm going to do is go back and forth. I'll run the latest release of each rom and wait until who ever releases first. The devs of these rooms are unbelievably talented. Don't stick to just one rom. Go back and forth and support these devs.
I'm running LS at the moment and who ever pumps out the next build, I'm going to flash it. Really can't go wrong with either. My reason for using LS at the moment is because the DPI feature. I like having chrome and Gmail in tablet mode. But I'm sure carbon will put this feature in the next build or so. In my opinion, these are the best roms out there for the GS3. Really 1A and 1B.

Currently using Liquid rc1 but curious about differences between it and carbon. Doesn't really seem to be much of one on the surface... Wanting to hear from people who perhaps know more about the " under the hood " differences between the two

What is carbon and what is liquid? Are they roms? How are they different from Frosty, the ROM that I run?

This is how I rank them in terms of stability, performance, and features
1. Rootbox
2. Liquid
3. Carbon

I ran the liquid smooth RC... 9 I think it was? it was on 4.1.2 but never gave their 4.2.2 ROM a try before it went RC, but I had a lot of little issues with it being buggy and they just started to get to me. I eventually swapped back to cm 10 because it was more stable for my own personal experiences with it.
As for carbon, I didn't flash the first release because I wanted to watch the boards and see what issues people were having with it, but I've been on carbon since 1.1 and I really like it. It doesn't seem quite as buggy as liquid smooth did. The only exception I have to that, is the most recent release (1.4) was consistently giving me issues with regards to display timeout. It would timeout after 15 seconds (I like a short timeout) and the screen would go black, without the CRT off animation, and then it would just freeze with a faint horizontal line through the middle and the hardware buttons would still be illuminated. I could not unlock the screen or get it to turn back on, and had to pull the battery out and reboot my phone every time. I tried reflashing several times, and I continue to get the same issue so I flashed back to 1.3. No issues on this version, it runs solid.

[Q] Best 4.4.2 Rom for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Like title said, I'm searching for good Galaxy Nexus Rom.. i have some base requests like:
- Screen Record keys (vol+ and pwr)
- Battery Life
- A loooot of customization
- No lags
If there is a Rom with all that requests and It's android 4.3.x isn't a problem

I second this request - I am at a point where I would throw my phone into oncoming traffic because it lags so bad. The battery cannot make it past 2pm on a good day, and have grown to really hate the "nightly" ROMs. I want to stay rooted, and run the latest stablest version of android on it. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
There is no best ROM. These threads arent even allowed. Just try them a dev has put a lot of work in it.

I love Paranoid Android. In PA3.99 RC2 (Android 4.3.1), there are a lot of feature and customization. In PA4.0-BETA (Android 4.4.2), there are a few extra feature but nothing relevant at the moment. Devs are working in recode features, but they say that want to reduce kanging. You can try CyanogenMod or AOKP (the last has a lot of customization) por any derive from that. You have to try them and then decide what you prefer.

I am currently on the CM-Remix rom 1/11 release and have been on it for a few days, so far I like a lot of the customization features. I would suggest reading what other users have experienced in the thread and determine which one you want to try. This has been the only 4.4 rom that I have used for more than a few hours. I am weird about customization so I tend to find one with lots of features and stick with it for a while. (trying to curb my flashing addiction.)

CM-Remix has a lot of cool features, probably would be my favorite but I can't get the wakelocks figured out even after reflashing etc. For me, slimkat is a second in features but most better in terms of wakelocks (for me). Translates into almost double the bat life for me
These type of threads are not allowed on XDA.

Agreed. The lag killed me after a couple days of usage.

I'm running stock 4.3 with Franco kernel r392 (for bigmem as r394 doesn't have it) and its the smoothest combo you'll ever have.
I usually get 3 - 3 1/2 hours of SOT.
as for nightlys, I agree, they do suck and I hope the PA team gets a stable/milestone with HALO and all of that good stuff soon... like REAL soon.
trying soooo hard not to flash everything any anything.
Which one is the most stable then, if I may ask. Or am I still better off using 4.3?

They all are. Only Paranoid Android 4 is still in beta but that should be stable too. There is no best ROM or most stable one. It depends on your preference and phone (every Galaxy Nexus responds diffrently to certain settings/roms/kernels) so please stop these threads..

I understand very well that such questions may annoy people, but my question is actually more specific. I'm not looking for the best rom with the most features. I just want to upgrade to 4.4. But I'm afraid to do so, as I use my alarm a lot (to wake up for exams in time). If the phone randomly reboots and the alarm is gone for some reason that would be very silly. So I'm looking for a phone that has the smallest chance of such situation (alrm gone) happening.
So CM11 nightly has the smallest chance of that happening?
Thanks in advance.

From my own experience, CM11 doesn't have the smallest *chance* of that happening - because that NEVER happened to me at all. GNex is my part-time alarm clock and it always wakes me up at the right time. But yeah, because we install different apps and use different settings, YMMV

Re Best 4.4.2 Rom for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus
ParanoidAndroid 4 (BETA 3) is working fine on my Maguro. Because there are not so much options right now (because it's in beta), I'm using it with the Xposed module Gravitybox (KK). You could wait for the official PA 4 when it's out of beta, or give it a try: paranoidandroid.co.
