Just got an R800x. Where do I go from here? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got an Xperia Play (Verizon) and to my surprise it was rooted already.
Gingerbread 2.3.2
Baseband: 7X30A-AAABQMAZM-1290_10-01
Kernel: 2.6.21.9-perf
Build Number: 3.0.E.2.89
Should I get a Gingerbread rom? ICS rom? Leave it on stock? I plan to use this phone for gaming, music, and web browsing (and using the former more than the latter), so I'm looking for the solution with the best gaming performance. Not going to be used as a phone at all. Also, is 7-8gb enough for games? I have about 22gb of music than I want to put on the Play once I get around to getting a 32gb micro sd card.

Unlock your phone. It costs $25 but so worth it. I unlocked mine a couple days ago.

What do you mean by unlock? Like unlock to use for other carriers? I'm not using it as a phone cause I don't need to. I only bought it for gaming, since I'm selling my Droid X to a friend.

Oh really? You have anywhere I can read up on this stuff? And how can I check if it's unlocked?
How viable do you think stock is just for gaming and music?

stock based roms are the best for gaming you can flash roms like true ancestor and Gin2JellyBean Without a unlocked bootloader as they can use stock kernel

Sorry about not using search.
Basically, what you're saying is stock based roms like the ones you listed will be able to be flashed by CWM or whatever method the R800x uses, and other roms like CM9 will brick me right?
I'll try reading through the stickies or other topics right now.

Alright thanks a lot. Gonna do some more research. Is it just me or is it hard to find an R800x rom? Only definite ones I've found are Cola and GBTweaked. I like Xperia NXT and Gin2JellyBean but I can't tell if they are R800x compatible.

Any ROM will work if you're not planning on using it as a phone. (GSM Roms break the phone aspect of the R800x, that should be it.)

They're not any harder to make than a GSM ROM, its just our user base is smaller, (and also, on average, from who I've communicated with, the more active R800x users tend to be older, so less time to spend working on ROMs) leading to less ROMs

I am currently working on a Minot rom that is somewhat built for gaming. When I am done I will post the link here

So basically I can use any rom I want that works on a locked bootloader? Won't mess with wifi or any other important function besides the phone, yes? That'll make choosing a rom much easier. Thanks for the info guys.

Hey guys. I decided to go with Xperia NXT v1.2. In the guide, it says to flash some firmware and root. Since I am rooted, can I skip those steps and go straight to installing CWM?

Why are you trying to install a GSM ROM!??!? It won't work on the R800x unless you like a black homes screen, soft key not working, video recording, pictures, etc. You need a CDMA rom which is practically the stock rom debloated. Apparently there is no custom roms for the CDMA xperia play other than cyanogenmod or fxp. Make sure you know how to use flashtool to revert your xperia play back to stock and fully functional again.

EDIT: Looked at GBTweaked, and do any of you guys know what he means when he says he removed basic games? I'd like to keep Asphalt 6.

Can someone please clear up my confusion

All the different versions of the Play, and it's availability across the globe is making things very confusing for me to figure out. Can someone please give me some straight answers to the following questions? (And, yes, I -did- try to read the threads, but I'm not getting it.)
First, my relevant stats:
Wireless Provider: Verizon
Location: US
Phone: Xperia Play
Model: R800x
Network type: CDMA
Bootloader: Locked
Rooted: Yes
Custom Recovery: CWM installed to the \System
Questions:
1. If I have my bootloader unlocked, what ROMS will work properly with the US Verizon network?
2. Again, assuming the above, which kernel(s) should be used?
3. Once more, assuming the above, how is the functionality of the Gamepad affected? (Obviously, it needs to work to make any sense of having the phone unlocked and loading a Custom ROM.)
Maybe I'm making this harder than it needs to be. But, it seems to me that the R800x is such a different beast from all the other models of the Play that it would almost make sense to have its own sub-forum.
Please note my prior Android experience has been with the LG Ally and the LG Vortex. No bootloaders, no multiple models with different rules based on the country of origin, just straight-forward simple configurations. The rules were simple: Root, install Custom Recovery, make a Nandroid, install your choice of Custom ROMs and enjoy. So you can see why this environment is so perplexing to me.
Thank you in advance for clarifying my options. I'm sure with all the knowledgeable folks here, I'll soon be rocking a new configuration.

Root?

Hey there everybody.
I'm thinking of jumping to a verizon xperia play and i'm trying to figure out how i'd root it and get to the point where i can flash custom roms.
I think the Flash Tool is what i want, but i cant find any detailed explanation of what it does and how to use it (i'm a big fan of reading up) on either its thread here, the x10 thread, or its website. I think it might be so ubiquitous here that i'm out of my element coming from sprint/samsung land. Help a brother out?

If do get it there are something you should know.
Root is easy, check the link named zergRush in my signature.
To load a custom rom (that doesn't require a new kernel) you need to install CWM, and there is an app available in the market for it (CWM for Xperia, or something like that)
If you want a rom that requires a custom kernel (i.e. cm7 is all that we have right now) then you need to pay ($24) to unlock the bootloader to install a custom rom
Flashtool is a combination of two programs, it can be used in fastboot mode (to load a custom kernel (i think, i've only used it for the other usage I'll talk about now)
Otherwise it can be used to flash a ftf file (a copy of the update) to bring your phone to stock.

Getting Xperia Play! What should I know?

First thing, sorry for not searching but I'm going to br busy over the coming week or two with school and tests so please, I would be very grateful.

What are the main things I should know about the Xperia Play?
(In terms of Rooting and Bootloader Unlocking etc)
I'm coming from an Xperia 8 and I'm not a n00b at Android hacking so I can take a lot in.
Also, is there any bug in the Play that I should know about? I'm hoping that by the time I get mine (2 weeks) it will. Come shipped with ICS.
If not, I can use PCC ....right?
Thanks guys,
Really looking forward to joining the R800i community.
Anything guys?

It probably won't come with ICS. However, if you unlock your bootloader (free using Sony's official method if you have an R800i) we have an official ICS beta from Sony. It's perfectly stable for everyday use. There are also a few roms based on it.
We can't flash kernels from recovery so get used to using fastboot. It's actually pretty simple.
Be aware that the gamepad doesn't work properly in non-stock based roms - CM7 for example. Sony's stock rom is actually quite good anyway once you've de-bloated.
Other than that it's just another Android phone really

Yea, don't worry. I'm used to flashing kernels and backups in Flashtool from my X8 , so fast boot shouldn't be too hard, but I'll have have to learn more about it as we don't have that over on the X8....
Also, its a bit of a bummer that the game pad doesn't work on custom ROMs :/
But just as a matter of interest, does the game pad work on the ICS Beta and can the game pad or
down arrow be used for scrolling on web pages?
And I'm also very surprised that Sony have given access to a Boot loader Unlocking tool!
Anyway, thank you very much for your reply.

[Q] Any ICS Roms that work without unlocking bootloader?

At the moment I cant unlock my bootloader, so Im wondering if there is a ICS Rom that works with the normal kernel. Im on the most recent NA 2.3.4 firmware for the R800a if that makes a difference and I have the Xperia Play 4G (R800at).

The only ICS roms we have right now require an unlocked bootloader. They alone aren't worth unlocking it IMO.
Might as well just wait for the official update.
Unlocking the bootloader is still a good idea in general, but if the only rom you wanna try is stock ICS, and not any custom ones, don't bother.

I heard the ICS++ work with a locked bootloader...but i dont think its true
If you like the design of ICS then use a rom that is ICS themed...at least a little

It's impossible that it could work locked, since you need to flash an ICS kernel with fastboot.

Want to sell my Xplay, which rom should i install (game compatibility, etc..)?

Hello,
My XPlay has been staying for months (even a year..?) in the desk, so it'll be better in someone elses hand.
I'm wondering which rom i should install to get it the fastest (should say the less slowy..) as possible,
And having good game compatibility at same time. Currently i have Paranoid Android on it;
Ideas?

I think the buyer will want game but not having such an old android as GB (knowing all the new features, and all the news apps you can't install on it..) so maybe 4.0 will be less good for games than 2.3 but still much better than 4.1 or 4.2?

Most buyers in 2013 don't want a Gingerbread device and "stock" in our case was always pretty damned broken (unusable after only a few apps). Giving the buyer the best of both worlds with a multi-boot kernel sounds like a much smarter idea to me. Also, an unlocked bootloader is a PLUS that increases the value. Any buyer who appreciates that enough to pay extra is going to know that he/she can return to stock at any time.
Telling BFU's that multiboot is an good idea.. I would rather accept stock, and then i would root it myself.
