Getting Xperia Play! What should I know? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First thing, sorry for not searching but I'm going to br busy over the coming week or two with school and tests so please, I would be very grateful.
--
What are the main things I should know about the Xperia Play?
(In terms of Rooting and Bootloader Unlocking etc)
I'm coming from an Xperia 8 and I'm not a n00b at Android hacking so I can take a lot in.
Also, is there any bug in the Play that I should know about? I'm hoping that by the time I get mine (2 weeks) it will. Come shipped with ICS.
If not, I can use PCC ....right?
Thanks guys,
Really looking forward to joining the R800i community.

Anything guys?

It probably won't come with ICS. However, if you unlock your bootloader (free using Sony's official method if you have an R800i) we have an official ICS beta from Sony. It's perfectly stable for everyday use. There are also a few roms based on it.
We can't flash kernels from recovery so get used to using fastboot. It's actually pretty simple.
Be aware that the gamepad doesn't work properly in non-stock based roms - CM7 for example. Sony's stock rom is actually quite good anyway once you've de-bloated.
Other than that it's just another Android phone really

Yea, don't worry. I'm used to flashing kernels and backups in Flashtool from my X8 , so fast boot shouldn't be too hard, but I'll have have to learn more about it as we don't have that over on the X8....
Also, its a bit of a bummer that the game pad doesn't work on custom ROMs :/
But just as a matter of interest, does the game pad work on the ICS Beta and can the game pad or
down arrow be used for scrolling on web pages?
And I'm also very surprised that Sony have given access to a Boot loader Unlocking tool!
Anyway, thank you very much for your reply.

Gamepad works fine on the official beta, although some games don't perform as well as they do in GB.
Yes, D-pad can be used for scrolling web pages

If I were you I'd flash the Sony beta ICS with the Sony kernel. Unless you like games, then I'd flash the latest Gingerbread ROM. Emulators (especially PSXperia) work better with GB.

And if I happen to get an R800i model, where can I unlock its bootlader, as MicaelBH said Sony have a free unlocking tool.
Also, I'm hoping that the Xperia Play can be rooted in flash tool..right?
Again, I really appreciate your answers.

Can someone please clear up my confusion

All the different versions of the Play, and it's availability across the globe is making things very confusing for me to figure out. Can someone please give me some straight answers to the following questions? (And, yes, I -did- try to read the threads, but I'm not getting it.)
First, my relevant stats:
Wireless Provider: Verizon
Location: US
Phone: Xperia Play
Model: R800x
Network type: CDMA
Bootloader: Locked
Rooted: Yes
Custom Recovery: CWM installed to the \System
Questions:
1. If I have my bootloader unlocked, what ROMS will work properly with the US Verizon network?
2. Again, assuming the above, which kernel(s) should be used?
3. Once more, assuming the above, how is the functionality of the Gamepad affected? (Obviously, it needs to work to make any sense of having the phone unlocked and loading a Custom ROM.)
Maybe I'm making this harder than it needs to be. But, it seems to me that the R800x is such a different beast from all the other models of the Play that it would almost make sense to have its own sub-forum.
Please note my prior Android experience has been with the LG Ally and the LG Vortex. No bootloaders, no multiple models with different rules based on the country of origin, just straight-forward simple configurations. The rules were simple: Root, install Custom Recovery, make a Nandroid, install your choice of Custom ROMs and enjoy. So you can see why this environment is so perplexing to me.
Thank you in advance for clarifying my options. I'm sure with all the knowledgeable folks here, I'll soon be rocking a new configuration.

[Q] Any ICS Roms that work without unlocking bootloader?

At the moment I cant unlock my bootloader, so Im wondering if there is a ICS Rom that works with the normal kernel. Im on the most recent NA 2.3.4 firmware for the R800a if that makes a difference and I have the Xperia Play 4G (R800at).
Thanks guys.

The only ICS roms we have right now require an unlocked bootloader. They alone aren't worth unlocking it IMO.
Might as well just wait for the official update.
Unlocking the bootloader is still a good idea in general, but if the only rom you wanna try is stock ICS, and not any custom ones, don't bother.

I heard the ICS++ work with a locked bootloader...but i dont think its true
If you like the design of ICS then use a rom that is ICS themed...at least a little

Ics fast approaching?

So its getting closer to june, we were told when ics was due in feb/march that it was being delayed till may/june.
My question is does anyone really think we will get an official ics at all?
I think there's no reason not to, we got the beta, and our Xperia Play's are pretty decent to run ICS has the Arc S.
Just a matter of time I believe
Don't say fast approaching! They'll delay it even further! You know they watch these forums, right!?
Slowly approaching...
Not to mention, the date they gave is when they start rolling it out, it could take 4 - 6 weeks from the first release til your specific one. August/September ; how does that sound?

Not to mention the fact that while all of you lucky R800i users will probably get an official ICS update, we R800x users probably don't have a snowball's chance in hell of ever getting it.

For R800i I take a regular look at this site. We'll be close to ICS when some new builds will show up here. Right now, the newest build for R800i is German's .69. So any future builds should be ICS builds I think.

I'm on Stock 2.3.3 now and when IXS comes around for my R800i, will I have to unroot first?

Have you noticed that normal Arc and the other 2011 handsets that were due out same time as Play have been up there on there lists for a while ready to go. No sign of the Plays FW. With so many issues with games on there Beta Rom, Would it be a good idea from Sony to release FW which is very buggy and takes half of the plays features away. Cant see game Dev's rushing out to Fix there old titles just for Sony's mistake.
is there any reason why sony delay xperia play ICS? forget the beta version, we just need the final one

Update
I am sure, that Sony will give us the ICS update.
The situation about updates was/is bad for Sony, so they want to change something a give updates earlier.
BUT, as they said, gingerbread is running good and ICS is not optimalized yet. I think, that update will came later than they said, but it WILL come.
Here is also question about gaming HW. So this is/will be big problem i think. On ICS it has different functionality than GB.
No one maked rom, that will support gaming HW in all ways like stock rom. And THIS will be problem about new ICS.

Dev Challenge

OK first, this thread does not intend to convey any lack of appreciation or respect to the devs or any of their ROMs.
That being said, it seems to me that by now, most of the ROMs are pretty much the same as the ROMs they are cloned from. Really, there are just so many things you can mod, after all.
However, there are a few things that have been left unresolved and I think it might be useful to make a list of the things we would like the devs to take on. So I will start the ball rolling land maybe others would care to offer some ideas as well.
1. A patch for ROMs based on the Sony Beta to enable fully functional CDMA and 3G capability.
2. Increased volume in CM9.
3. A Verizon 2.3.4 FTF file.
4. A modified Play Launcher which shows all your games.
That's all I can think of for now. Please feel free to add your USEFUL and POSITIVE comments and suggestions. And as always, thanks to our devs for the work you do. We appreciate you so much!

Its funny you mention the 3G Verizon CDMA, I have been messaging with Pax on the topic of makinga CDMA patch, in factc I literally just emailed him on it, again, about 20 seconds ago... I asked him if he wanted to make a thread on the Dev section where we try to get some additional help with the CDMA patch as I have no programming experience and I have never used APK tool, and I do not exactly have a lot of free time due to job, wife, kids, etc. But I am willing to give it a shot. I was thinking o getting a AT&T Xplay after my contract is due in Dec, but I think I have changed my mind, and decided why cant we just create a CDMA patch. I mean if they have it for AOSP, why not us. Plus, I see all these cool ROMs for the GSM and go, "I want to try that ROM".

My thoughts exactly. Same with some of the GB ROMs like Ancestor. It would be nice to have a patch for those, which ought to be doable since we have GB 2.3.4 compatibility now.
It comes down to whether or not we have enough users that need it and a dev or devs interested in the challenges.

I don't know what's with the audio but its present in all AOSP roms, I think its an issue for other devices too.
It might have something to do with the audio effects.
After the stunt Sony just pulled, open sourcing their touch pad implementation would be fair enough, and IMHO would be better than official ICS.
I need a new kernel splash screen my support for Sony has dropped a little bit, but hopefully they will treat us with respect and release something for us.
Touch pads fully fixed on CM9 would be awesomesauce

Gingerbread 2.3.2
Baseband: 7X30A-AAABQMAZM-1290_10-01
Kernel: 2.6.21.9-perf
Build Number: 3.0.E.2.89
Should I get a Gingerbread rom? ICS rom? Leave it on stock? I plan to use this phone for gaming, music, and web browsing (and using the former more than the latter), so I'm looking for the solution with the best gaming performance. Not going to be used as a phone at all. Also, is 7-8gb enough for games? I have about 22gb of music than I want to put on the Play once I get around to getting a 32gb micro sd card.

They're not any harder to make than a GSM ROM, its just our user base is smaller, (and also, on average, from who I've communicated with, the more active R800x users tend to be older, so less time to spend working on ROMs) leading to less ROMs

I am currently working on a Minot rom that is somewhat built for gaming. When I am done I will post the link here

So basically I can use any rom I want that works on a locked bootloader? Won't mess with wifi or any other important function besides the phone, yes? That'll make choosing a rom much easier. Thanks for the info guys.
Hey guys. I decided to go with Xperia NXT v1.2. In the guide, it says to flash some firmware and root. Since I am rooted, can I skip those steps and go straight to installing CWM?

Why are you trying to install a GSM ROM!??!? It won't work on the R800x unless you like a black homes screen, soft key not working, video recording, pictures, etc. You need a CDMA rom which is practically the stock rom debloated. Apparently there is no custom roms for the CDMA xperia play other than cyanogenmod or fxp. Make sure you know how to use flashtool to revert your xperia play back to stock and fully functional again.

What? I was told that it only affects the phone stuff like data, calling and sms.
EDIT: Looked at GBTweaked, and do any of you guys know what he means when he says he removed basic games? I'd like to keep Asphalt 6.
