Dev Challenge - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK first, this thread does not intend to convey any lack of appreciation or respect to the devs or any of their ROMs.
That being said, it seems to me that by now, most of the ROMs are pretty much the same as the ROMs they are cloned from. Really, there are just so many things you can mod, after all.
However, there are a few things that have been left unresolved and I think it might be useful to make a list of the things we would like the devs to take on. So I will start the ball rolling land maybe others would care to offer some ideas as well.
1. A patch for ROMs based on the Sony Beta to enable fully functional CDMA and 3G capability.
2. Increased volume in CM9.
3. A Verizon 2.3.4 FTF file.
4. A modified Play Launcher which shows all your games.
That's all I can think of for now. Please feel free to add your USEFUL and POSITIVE comments and suggestions. And as always, thanks to our devs for the work you do. We appreciate you so much!

Its funny you mention the 3G Verizon CDMA, I have been messaging with Pax on the topic of makinga CDMA patch, in factc I literally just emailed him on it, again, about 20 seconds ago... I asked him if he wanted to make a thread on the Dev section where we try to get some additional help with the CDMA patch as I have no programming experience and I have never used APK tool, and I do not exactly have a lot of free time due to job, wife, kids, etc. But I am willing to give it a shot. I was thinking o getting a AT&T Xplay after my contract is due in Dec, but I think I have changed my mind, and decided why cant we just create a CDMA patch. I mean if they have it for AOSP, why not us. Plus, I see all these cool ROMs for the GSM and go, "I want to try that ROM".

My thoughts exactly. Same with some of the GB ROMs like Ancestor. It would be nice to have a patch for those, which ought to be doable since we have GB 2.3.4 compatibility now.
It comes down to whether or not we have enough users that need it and a dev or devs interested in the challenges.

About #4, there is this:

Swipe off notifications in Gingerbread.
That would suit me down to the ground
Or implementation of the 4 Corners UI from the X10Mini. Saves having folders everywhere

I want swipe to remove notifications for GB too! It's so epic!

I agree wholeheartedly. I see tons of ROMs that I'd love to try but they're all GSM, especially gingerbread ROMs.

Challenge accepted.
Regarding #3 - The update needs to be posted to SEUS, then an ftf can be made.
Regarding #4 - I don't use the launcher, so I won't be messing with it too much.
Otherwise, I'll be starting on number two soon & one eventually

I don't know what's with the audio but its present in all AOSP roms, I think its an issue for other devices too.
It might have something to do with the audio effects.
After the stunt Sony just pulled, open sourcing their touch pad implementation would be fair enough, and IMHO would be better than official ICS.
I need a new kernel splash screen my support for Sony has dropped a little bit, but hopefully they will treat us with respect and release something for us.
Touch pads fully fixed on CM9 would be awesomesauce

About this dev challenge:
Stereo has been fixed, volume will be much louder: https://github.com/CyanogenMod/andr...mmit/bab72b92f3f1d806ae1306e99cc2ff0570053660
Volume on first boot is fixed.
WiFi tethering SHOULD be fixed.
Bluetooth audio is still broken afaik
But progress is good
Thanks to FXP for fixing audio!
Should be in next nightly/FXP release

Another thing that would be awesome is a CDMA patch to use with GSM ROMs based on 2.3.X ROMs

I can fix wifi and other things but i dont have power right now soi cant work untill i do... also what kernel are you using for this? It has to have init.d support for themes to work and also the euro galaxy s2 version has the camera working last time i checked.

I'd be curious to know what kernel as well. You try eri n apns for service? Wifi might be the same fix we've used for 2.3.5+ issues in the past as well since our kernel is technically built for 2.3.4.

hey barnacles,
if you grab the 'official' rom from miui.com or even the int'l sgs2 miui port from xda, all you need to do is swap the zimage with one of the epic 4g touch's (like LoStKernel) and it will boot up and function (maybe what the OP of this thread did, didn't download to see). Data and wifi were no go. If I remember, the cameras were working though unlike what this OP says. I've been working on this here and there but I definitely dont have as much free time as I'd like as I'm getting ready to move to the other side of the earth.
I'll be more than happy to answer questions and/or help development going as soon as I can put some time aside to work on this.

I'm not a fan of the MIUI ROM(its to iPhone-ish IMHO) but I still wanted to say thank you for this post. Although I know it wasn't its purpose, it did point me to the SkyRocket's Development, and Themes & Apps Section, and man do they have some goodies over there, which I never would've found had it not been for this post, so thanks again!
so you essentially made small tweaks and got aosp based rom from sgs2 int to boot? if so, nice. I wonder if this works with CM7 as well.
Omggggg we need to get this rolling. I thought someone was already working on a port for MIUI? What is this for? Excited nonetheless lol.

mmmm..... hard to say, honestly, i would advise against it. At least until some new versions of the ROMs are released. I know that Raver said a new version is coming very soon-- hopefully today, and Yaldak is back in action, yay!
Myself, i stuck with black edition for about a week but the call echo issue drove me nuts. If ur business requires talking on the phone with people, might be a bad idea to ics yoself (if you do indeed find this issue to occur). As far as stability, black edition, i have found is the most stable but like i said, yaldak and raver are making big moves and will definitely be releasing some huge updates soon. Wait and read the q&a's once the new releases come out.

This is not a flame, just an observation.
You are not having a hard time picking out a rom, you are just electing to NOT search the forums, and NOT read the various ICS posts. There are a couple of roms that will get you DATA, and WIFI. Flash them and find out of they are to your liking. Or if you want to continue to not use the search feature and want people to spook feed you information then just sit back and wait for tmobile to push the OTA release when its done.

The ICS ROMs are in heavy development. If you depend on your phone for anything then no, don't flash them yet. If you like to try out new stuff, go ahead, but be aware, read up and know what you're getting into.

Will JB be 100% working for our phone when the tools are released?

At the IO google said that they would release JB developer tools for JB. So will we have the full potential of 4.1 JB?
I ask this because JB probably won't be released (offically) for our phone.
PS: do you think the performance boosts of JB will have an significant effect on our phone? It seemed to on the nexus.
Probably not. We don't have kernel source for ICS as it is, even though our phone is slated to get it, but I wouldn't count on it so getting JB to work on our phone is highly unlikely.

I'm 76% sure we will get ICS. They have it for the S and they said they would release it at the end of August.
You must consider that JB is just an updated ICS. So we don't need an offical JB to have it running 100%. And Google will have a dev tool out that may help us. Lastly they have a dump floating around. Chances are that we can use that to help us build a 100% working ASOP JB build. But this all depends on when or if we get ICS.
Can a dev jump in and let me know of my logic is correct

And you believe everything HTC and Verizon tells you...? that Dev tool is worthless if it doesn't include specific Dinc 2 files that goes once again back to kernel source. That dump isn't as useful to us as you think otherwise we would have fully working ICS on our phones from ICS dumps. Trust me, if it were as simple as you believe it is, our devs would have done it already. The situation with JB is pretty much the same as ICS if not worse since there is also the issue of resizing XHDPI JB to WVGA because there are no JB phones with WVGA resolution. Don't quote me on that last part, but I'm sure a dev can correct me or explain it better.

Nexus S will receive the update and it is a single core WVGA phone. So, I'll be looking closely on feedback from Nexus S users. That should give us an idea of the performance gains that we can theoretically expect, if any, over ICS. And there is no need to be overly cynical about HTC and their promise of giving us ICS. They said they will by August end and so just wait for it. Regardless of what may have happened in the past, you will just burden your mind with needless thoughts...

They said to be determined by the end of August which is a big difference. And honestly at this point I don't really care if we get official ICS anymore I'm pretty content with the work that our devs have done so far without it, if official ICS is so important to some of these users they might as well have just stayed stock and waited for an OTA. I don't mean to take this out on you personally, but these threads about JB and "perfect and bugless" ICS roms have gotten ridiculously out of hand. Not to mention the amount of user that lack to read the threads let alone the OP when it comes to figuring out what bugs exist. Its been clarified by reps at both HTC and VZW that what they meant was that the date is to be decided but that we will have it by the end of August. Take that for what you will, as I don't believe there has been anything official that clarifies this. I am pretty confident that we will get it and can only hope that we will get kernel source soon after.
Back to the OP's question, I highly doubt that we will have a 100% working JB rom anytime soon considering we still have issues on ALL of our ICS roms. Once we have official ICS our awesome dev's will probably be able to get JB working well pretty quickly.

HTC has to release kernel source regardless because of the Chinese OTA they released. It might be as late as October, but they have to release it regardless or else they'd be in violation of some law that has an acronym I can't remember.

OTA ICS will (should) help remove many of the small bugs we have with Camera etc... And once we get a hand on our kernel source, I believe devs will be knee deep in Jellybean goodness... The main reason why I am looking forward for the OTA is for the kernel source... Hell no I am going to go stock.. Once the kernel is up, I am gonna go with Nits' Sense 4 ROM!
The To be determined thing is crappy of them... They say on their FB page that the "Release Date" is the thing to be determined, NOT whether it gets ICS or not... which makes sense given it is in the table of release dates and given they previously confirmed to give it ICS... anyway, time will tell... No breaking my head on this...

We really only need the kernal for ASOP. IC sense 3.6 has fully working cam.... IDK about video. Phone video is pointless because it has low FPS and the audio is terrible.
Why is camera always better on sense?

Yeah, I should try that ROM too, sometime... I was wondering how functional it is... The Sense 4 ROM has some issues with GPS too (if you toggle it, it will not come back on). But I don't like how Sense 3.6 is.
Even if we don't get an OTA HTC still has to release source because of the Chinese and Inc S ICS OTA. That's why I don't understand why some of the other users are so anxious for an official OTA, even with these other OTAs flash timing appears to still have not been fixed, whatever that is I haven't had it happen personally (knock on wood). We all need to relax and just wait for source to be posted and let the devs do their thing.
On a different topic, anyone else thing the default sig on the XDA app is kind of redundant?

In my experience it was bugless (IC 3.6) although it was laggy. It was laggy in the wrong places (homescreen, and scrolling through certain apps) and smooth in the wrong places (app drawer, GP, settings).
You need to check it out

I agree, there were a few things that happened recently that have gotten us excited..... (The S getting ICS and JB)....... but we need to chill out. And in the mean time enjoy what we DO have, and not think about what we don't and might not get.
Funny thing is this thread only exists becuase of the recent changes.

I think we can get clockworkmod full functional soon. Once that happens, development can really start. The other trick will to get around the locked bootloaders, but if we follow the steps that the Xperia S took that should not be a huge problem.

sorry to ask a very ignorant question...but i thought sony had given options to support bootloader unlocking?? they gave the processes themselves.. atleast thats what they did with the arc s. So the only reason development hasnt kicked off is because of the bootloader issue?
No, the main reason is that without a fully working cwm and without sources, it was just about worthless to make any attempt at modding. Now I think we have both, I have to do some more testing to make sure that my latest version of cwm is fully working and sources were just posted today so that is why it has taken so long, not to mention the lack of development support at this time. Beside me, I only know of one other at this time trying to help build stuff. (not to say no one else is). Yes, bootloader being locked is a pain in the ass, but I think we found a lot away around it at this time. The LT28i and LT28h can unlock their bootloaders without much problem. The LT28at has locked bootloaders that is harder to unlock.
I was hesitant to get the ion because of lack of development, but honestly with rooted ICS, this phone is awesome. I got it free, just like my xperia x10 a few years ago. I love xperia phones, so couldn't pass up the upgrade, i have no doubt there will be some stuff rolling for this soon enough, i had oodie prime miui on my x10, so many roms to choose from on x10 and i flashed atleast 100. With the ion i have a new adventure to look forward to.

thank you so much for the info mate......& goodluck with the development....very much looking forward towards the development of this phone...even if i DONT get it....i live in bangaldesh so if i do get it, i'll get the lt28h.
I need / want a 2nd Android phone and Sony is the one Android I have not owned. One X is #1 phone but need a 2nd and I keep coming back to the ION. S3 been there Touchwiz moans. The only hold up is no ICS. No good reason from Sony not to have out of the box. Sales killer. Period! That must be why its free or $29.
Skyrocket tons of Rom's and Mod's and ICS update while back.
But I really want to try this Sony ION if I can get past the ICS thing.
BTW- Sony online - Out of Stock. Anybody else free on a two year contract? Can't go too wrong if free vs. what I've paid for the S3 and HOX.
Thanks for all the post, really good info.

I don't understand why is this subject even arised ?. This is a new phone just came out, it takes time to crack it. We have gone a long way getting ICS updated on our Own. Chill out, it eventually will get there - latest & greatest.
If you are *****ing about Sony release the phone with GB or not much roms or mods, then go with another phone brand. Anything wont change the fact it has an older OS installed and developers take their time understanding the code to crack. So make up your mind and Live with it - Better yet do it yourself - stop your winning.

Wasn't me about custom ROMs really. Haven't even done that on my HOX yet. Waiting for JB. I really like the Sony ION but G.B.? Really its embarrassing for Sony and killing the sales too .But I have two Androids as of tomorrow so I can wait. Yea ICS and Apex (only for ICS) work really well. But I can't wait to get the ION and dig into it. Also, thought I read somewhere that they just released the final source code right? So it can't be that long.
If I get 4.1 on my HOX before 4.x on my ION. There's a big issue somewhere and its not at&t.
That's my only real concern. Not much resale value as currently sits.

Killing sales? Care to back that up? You can't because actually the phone has been selling well. The low on contract price has made the phone very attractive for people. And remember the majority of the public has no clue about GB cs ICS vs JB.

This is more true than most can actually believe. Ask any random person what kind of (Android) phone they have, and unfortunately...most reply simply with... "I have a droid" ... And to these people, that could be ANY Android OS based phone... Not the actual Motorola Droid, as we in this community understand.

[Q] Yet another what's the best rom thread: ICS and stable?

Greetings everyone,
I would like to start off by apologizing for bothering you folks with yet another "what's the best ROM for having X and doing Y" thread, although I felt that after searching I had a rather specific criteria, which I'm hoping someone may be able to address.
I have been using Virtuous Affinity for awhile now, and frankly I'm starting to feel old It seems like ICS has been out forever while I'm still on gingerbread. I am a little unclear on what the official status is of ICS support though; I thought I remembered hearing some talk about HTC potentially having an ICS based update in the works, although past that I know nothing. Browsing around, I'm a little discouraged by some of the known issues ICS roms may have; no camera support, broken audio/bluetooth, things like that.
What I would optimally like to have is a fully functioning ICS ROM. Stable, good performance, nice on the battery, etc. etc. UI wise, I have become accustomed to HTC's Sense UI, but even then I'm very foggy on what the differences are between their major versions (I've been hearing of 2.0 and 3.0). To be honest though, I wouldn't mind trying a new UI. I've liked the one Samsung puts on their Galaxy SIII.
Above all, stability is my goal. I'm not too comfortable with the trailblazing "nightly" builds and testing ROMs; having a working phone is pretty important to me. Now you might say, "Well, why even root to begin with?" Okay, I like to experiment a little bit
But I digress. What is there in the wonderful and magical world of ROMs?
P.S. I think it would be really useful if there was a sticky going something like "State of the ROM", which pulls together a list of ROMs and highlights their features and issues in an easy to compare manner (so a step up from the currently stickied ROM compilation thread)
Right now chillybean's paranoidPAC
And preludedrew's Evervolv I can recommend
Viper and MIUI are both ICS and have everything working so far

Another vote for Evervolv it is 4.2.2 JB and everything works great except video camera. PAC is also good but it is only 4.1.2 afaik

Thanks for the suggestions, guys! I suppose I might want to give Evervolv a shot (Wifi is fixed I hope?) although I'm a little unclear about installing it. Most OPs post a tutorial for flashing ROMs, and while I would feel a little more comfortable flashing Evervolv on my own, it seems like there a new hoops you have to jump through for flashing ICS/JB roms. Could anyone guide me through the steps?
If you are rooted and have installed a custom recovery, go ahead and download the ROM of your choice, then install it from the recovery using install zip from SD card, then install the correct Google apps whether 4.2 gapps or 4.1 gapps
After that you restart and wait for the room to boot.
I highly recommend installing crossbreeder after the first boot, and then you are done!!!
If you want concider v6 supercharging your phone or what i used NOS

Why would you start by apologizing. You are acknowledging that this is redundant. Read the threads that are already there. You aren't asking anything new. And even if you were, you could ask in an existing thread. And if the rom doesn't give specific instructions it means you flash it the same way as any other. Read the op in the thread for each rom and try usually state what works and doesn't.

I'm not trying to be a butt head. I'm still learning too. But if you already know the question has been asked (and answered) multiple times... Read the answers that are there.
Sent from my Incredible 2 using xda app-developers app
I think you might be misunderstanding my OP... Yes, I am aware that the general form of the question has been asked, although I wanted to see how the community felt about the priorities I put forth in looking for a ROM (hence why I later suggested that a sticky stacking the ROMs against each other with their features and flops would be useful). I realize now that a lot of the ICS roms don't exactly meet what I was looking for anyways, and that I would have to take some relatively larger risks. Alas, I am going forth with trying one of the suggested ones.
And I believe asking in another thread would be considered hijacking by most forums? I see it's not explicitly mentioned in the rules, although I would expect people to keep questions to their own threads as a matter of courtesy.
I sometimes forget people can't hear the tone my tone of voice when I type. I meant laying down the law in a good way.
To the OP. Perhaps you would like to work on your suggested project of comparing the roms and once then we can all add our input to your list?

I didn't take it negatively. And your suggestion is spot on with what I was about to reply. Something my pastor says when people come to him with new ministry ideas, "that sounds great, I'm putting you in charge of that committee." Usually people want stuff done but want someone else to do it.
People don't generally make those threads because like this one they get redundant. The features are listed in the rom thread. Questions pertaining to the rom are asked in that thread. If someone wants to make a thread like you suggest that's fine, but what happens is someone comes in and instead of reading the rom thread they start asking questions in the new thread that have been answered already and the op constantly has to refer people to go read that thread.

The camera on aosp isn't as good as sense in my opinion anyway. I just never find myself using the sense launcher and therefore the sense widgets anyway, so I generally stick to aosp.
