I was shocked to read this, but it is still up to the carrier to decide whether or not they want to release a windows phone 7 update according to this article.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3982/windows-phone-7-review/26
"Microsoft physically hosts the update, however it is the carrier’s call whether or not to release it to customers Given the ban on UI customizations and the unified hardware support, there should be no technical reason for a carrier to prevent an update from going out. The fact that Microsoft will deliver, with every update, a list of how the carrier’s own validation tests will run should guarantee that any failure to push out said update would be negligence on the carrier’s part. Microsoft went on to say that while it’s possible for a carrier to prevent a Windows Phone update from going out, it doesn’t believe it’s a likely scenario. While Microsoft didn’t say it explicitly, the implication is that Windows Phone won’t have the update issues that have plagued certain Android customers"
The situation is still better than what we get with Android, but the only thing I want my carrier in charge of us my actual wireless service.

why would carriers deny an update? they are not creating it so they will approve it as long as it doesn't cripples their hardware...
the reason why they don't bother with android or windows mobile is because they need to create that update themselves...re-do the skin etc which costs $$$ so they are ultra slow regarding those OS...
with microsoft doing all the hardwork, carriers need to check whether the update is good for their device or not...
ps - this is why, everyone should buy an unlocked device..

I hoping the carriers can only stop people from getting it over the air, but not through zune
Quick note - this wasn't a very clear answer in several cases. According to several sources, including Jason Dunn's site, MS will push the OS updates, not the carriers. The carriers will have the option to roll up their updates into the WP updates so there's a common distribution method. Everything I've read recently strongly implies that the carriers will not be in charge of releasing updates. Hope that gives people some hope that we'll get updates in a timely fashion as defined by MS, not the carriers (who have a horrible track record of providing OS updates).
According to Paul Therrott's conversation with MS, Carriers could hold up one and only one update. Not sure why'd they want too, but who knows.....time will tell.
From a recent interview done on Engadget on The Engadget Show, it has been said by Microsoft that they will push updates. Only the user is able to decide whether or not to update.

Carriers have no say over updates through zune since it isn't using their network.
So, I've been looking around pretty hard recently and I have yet to see an answer on this that either applies to my phone or is not out of date.
My question is: Is a dev willing to attempt to replace android with Windows Mobile (6.1-6.5) or Windows Phone? Or is this not possible? ( Had seen previous answers stating we needed an unlocked bootloader for this to be an option...which we now have.)
Now some of you may be asking why the hell I'm wanting to replace the OS, and that comes down to the new privacy policy of Google's services and that there are no WM devices w/in the past two years that have a physical keyboard which use the 1700 MHz band for data.
Thanks so much for the help.

It is very hard to port a different OS. Possible, but very hard.
But as for the privacy policy, you understand that it basically makes Google have the SAME policy as Microsoft and Apple right? And you can opt out of many of the changes?
The media got that story and turned it into something it wasn't. Google can use your data to improve your experience in its other services. Just like Microsoft says it does.....only difference is they hide it in a wall of text, Google came out and told you.
Also, think that Windows Mobile/Windows Phone are closed-source OSes, while Android is Open Source. Even though, look how hard it is to port Ice Cream Sandwich to our device - an Android OS.
Porting another system with no drivers or access to source code would be next to impossible.
This has been asked a bunch and always answered with either no it can't work or why would you want to.
Don't think its possible
And its not that ics is super hard to port..its the fact that it hasn't been released for more than a couple devices. As soon as htc releases the official dhd ics things should go a lot smoother

Nospin, I do know that the policy is basically the same for Google as it is for Microsoft or Apple. And i really do like that they came out and said it as opposed to the EULAs of the others. I am also aware I can opt out of Google's services by not signing in on my desktop, but not on Android. I am required to be logged in to use things on the device like the market. Even for free apps, I have to be signed in to download them. Then, most of them also only provide downloads via the market, so I can't go to their site and buy them or get them (or updates.)
I am well aware it is difficult to port a different OS to a device, but I also know it's not impossible (just next to it.) I also know the question had been asked multiple times. I found 4 different threads under 4 different devices. All of them had different answers. Either "we need an unlocked bootloader", "yes it can be done", or "not possible." Were the answers. With each of the threads being years old I figured asking was the easiest way to get an updated answer.
If open source is the issue, how about loading memo 5, or even a full on version of Linux (vnc solutions don't count.)
I appreciate the responses so far, but I'd also like to hear from a dev on the subject if possible.
HTC HD2 is multiplatform (android,WM 6.5, WP7, ubuntu, meego) but doesn't have keyboard (only bluetooth)
Oh god, the mention of WM 6.X on our device made me throw up in my mouth a little. So obsolete, laggy and unstable. I don't know why you would go anywhere near that garbage.
Porting WM or WP, not "impossible" per se. But so much would have to be built from scratch. No hardware drivers for WP to work on our device, so they would have to be written from scratch. It would be a huge effort, and the fact that WP is closed source, makes it all the more difficult. "Impossible", technically no. But hundreds, probably thousands of hours worth of work. Nobody is really interested in putting that much effort into such a project. And for the reason that you just don't like Google's privacy policy? Sorry, not going to happen.
So based on a leaked document from AT&T the 7.8 update will not go live until WP8 devices are released.... that means 7.8 will not come to the Lumia until Christmas...
Nokia and MS are just playing with the customer making promises they will not fulfill.
Matters not to me I will grab a Win Phone 8 device when they are available and either slide my L900 in a drawer or put it on ebay, as will most others who want the latest
oh yeah, since we all have a pile of money laying around to update our phones every six months. prick.
I thought Nokia was going to directly push the updates to customers who sign up for a program? I was confused when AT&T mentioned they had a timeline for it.

Careful - name calling isn't part of the discussion. If someone can afford it they are welcome to do what they want with their money. He said what he's going to do, not what everyone should do. Hence, name calling is totally unwarranted here.

Yes, the update will be made available OTA afaik. My guess is that AT&T will do the official push to gather everyone in so they all are running 7.8. I would assume that even though I will be pushing the update to myself, not everyone will want to do that (depending on how it's made available). My dad comes to mind

Exactly - to be the latest and greatest at all times, you need to be ready to shell out the cash. I'll be looking at the 1st gen WP8 devices, but I'm pretty sure I'll be picking up a slate/tablet this time around as my iToy err iPad (gen 1) is gathering dust due to uselessness and lag (should have NEVER added the latest OS patch =/).
I'm already looking towards WP8 Gen II devices
Actually I am a little fuzzy about the OTA update thing. When they were talking about that, were they referring to future WP8 devices, or legacy devices as well. Same goes for the 18 month support promise. Moving forward, or including legacy devices.
If a WP7.8 OTA update is planned, do devices already have that capability, or do we need a "plug in" update to enable it?

Well, I'm going off of some articles I read about the WP 7.8 update, including what Paul Thurrott said. However, I can't seem to find a direct quote from Microsoft. So, we'll just have to wait and see. Nokia said something about 7.8 arriving in the coming weeks, but again, that could have also been in reference to something else (re: exclusive apps and extras).
*shrug* still lots to follow =)
I remember well that only WP8 will receive ota.

Yes, as a regular feature. But 7.8 was discussed otherwise:
Windows Update. Windows Phone 7.8 will be delivered directly to all Windows Phone users, bypassing the carriers. You will be able to download and install Windows Phone 7.8 over Wi-Fi, at home or wherever else, and install this update. This type of updating will be made available in Windows Phone 8, as well, as given my long, loud, and lengthy complaining about the lack of such updating in Windows Phone 7.x, you won’t be surprised, maybe, to discover that Microsoft jokingly calls this “the Paul Thurrott feature” internally.

That was the only part I could find, not an official bit from Microsoft themselves. you can see it here: http://www.winsupersite.com/article/windowsphone75/windows-phone-78-preview-143476
So, AT&T customers won't get the 7.8 update until Xmas? Yet another reason not buying devices from the carriers... Alternatively, anyone who doesn't want to wait for AT&T generously allowing him to update - could just flash his device with a non-AT&T ROM - right?

So then I suppose you know when everyone else will be receiving WP7.8. What a surprise if AT&T releases it before everybody. They do carry the flagship device after all.

Was going to say something in response but have decided instead that, thanks to people like surfer dude here, for me xda no longer serves the purpose for me it once did. It was one of the best sources on the for useful, helpful information for phones and tablets, but has become a source of irritation and frustration with very little useful information. There are far too many people who whine and complain without offering anything useful or meaningful to the community as a whole, to the point there is more griping than anything else. That being said, I am outta here and on to find the quality elsewhere. l8r
when they say in the "coming weeks", anybody have any idea of "how many" weeks does in the "coming weeks" refers to? i'm actually using an unbranded unit, so i'm actually looking forward for this update

Honestly I didn't know that there's an official release date for WP7.8, but I presume it'll be available before (or at the same time at most) AT&T releases their branded version of the update...
I've been keeping an I on the Nokia Suite servers...but nothing has popped up yet..Unless i'm blind (totally possible).
If you've found a working 7.8 rom for rm-808, I'd love to know how you snagged it!
There is not one yet. With Nokia starting to crack down on unauthorized access of Care Suite, I don't think I'd expect one either. They are going to protect the servers at the end of the month for only authorized people (Those licensed to use Care Suite.) so I doubt at this point they'd post anything new until after the lockdown.
Unfortunately, the blogs posting detailed guides on how to use Care Suite to get slightly early access for hits & ad revenue ruined the party for everyone else.
Hey everyone,
There is so much work on windows mobile 10 from all the users of XDA, and all the people we don't know about... does anyone have any idea's as to the following, or new ideas, to get a few more years out of windows mobile or even the possibility to revive it?:
Possible petition ideas:
a) a petition from x number of people to make Project Astoria available to all phones/select phone builds in the current windows phone 10 so that we can use Android apps (at least get continued app updates for a while longer using android apk's)
b) a petition from x number of people to make windows 10 updates for set devices through a product key purchase... we pay $$-$$$ for windows 10, 8, 7 licences... why not get a key for wm10 and then wm11 when it comes out and so on? if microsoft supports all the current phones hardware and manufacture a few new models... maybe this way we could revive it?
c) a petition from x number of people to continue updates for x time frame so that we can at least get a bit more out of it, maybe enough time to get some app developers to launch a single update or two for applications we really want using another petition from us.
[edit] One other idea I have thought of is maybe microsoft could release the code for astoria and windows 10 mobile... maybe for open source?
would be nice if the incredible people out there wanting to keep this alive had the tools to do so... could we petition this or approach them another way? [/edit]
Maybe a combination of all ideas into a petition and see what they decide to do. I personally have little money but if we all pledged $30+ to an update, had 1000 people willing to do it, I think microsoft would consider $30000 as an incentive?
Microsoft dropped this because of only having a tiny % of the market and the costs involved on maintaining it, so is there a way we can increase the percentage of devices if we get this working?
As I said above, if we could buy product keys for our phones to enable continued support, and also if we used a petition or other method to encourage and get results from Microsoft, then we could probably get other app developers of our choosing to follow suit (like Whatsapp, Waze, Viber, etc).
A petition is the only thing I can think of right now that just needs names and details, but we may have a legal stand point with newer devices getting continued support based on how long the expected support is for other devices from microsoft (what is the newest windows phone released with wm10?), google, apple etc... all ideas welcome
Example: in Australia all devices are warranted for a year, if sold here or manufactured and sold here... and that year is extended and often because someone will argue it to a tribunal (part of the fair trading route to take up matters with a manufacturer or seller) and say something along the lines of "TV sets used to last 10-15 years, my $2000 TV broke after the 2nd year, and the manufacturer/shop wont replace it" usually I get replacements after the 1 year warranty and I hear about entire Cars etc getting replaced entirely... Maybe if hardware has to work for an expected time, does software (that cannot be changed) that comes with a device? what about 3rd party applications for that software?
Any lawyers in the US, UK, Australia or another country reading this?.. Could you get us a few years continued updates with a similar clause?
Any route that works may even lead to reviving Windows Mobile
I would love some serious feedback guys, but please, don't just comment "No, why would Microsoft bother" or "I see no reason to try and revive"
What I hope to see is ideas, us working together... let's see if we can do this, anyone who wants to try or contribute please just say "yes" if you have little time
[edit] By the way for people needing instagram, pandora/spotify, facebook etc, I have a list of applications and links to .appx's that run (not always without a crash) currently (24th June 2019) and cost nothing. [/edit]
I wouldn't mind this. Still use a Lumia 640. I guess were it to fail, there's always trying to put WoA on Android phones...
Hi OP
I read your post and this can be a fantastic idea, but i didnt see soo much interest from the guys here in WM10.
Im still with the doubt about Whatsapp working beyond 31-12-2019 and nobody answer anything about that in my post. So i think, if people dont get "moved" about the posibility of having phones without whatsapp since 1-1-2020.... i really think that people just doesnt care about this OS.
