HELP! Samsung galaxy s2 sgh-t989 stuck in the ultimate boot loop. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Ok, so heres the deal. The s2 is my sisters phone, and she comes home and told me the phone wont turn on, that its stuck on the boot screen and it just keeps turning off and doing it again. So I started looking into it (Im an iPhone user, so I'm not too familiar with android devices. BUT I do know a bit about computers, cell phones and just technology in general). I ended up finding out that its stuck in a soft brick. So I started youtubing how to fix it. Found a great method using Odin3 and Samsung Kies. AND IT WORKED. I turned the phone back on, got past the lock screen and everything was all good.
After about 30 seconds, THE PHONE BRICKED AGAIN. And it went right back into the boot loop, I cant get it into download mode because it just keeps restarting after a couple of seconds. With that happening, I cant get the computer to recognize it so I can do a recovery fix with Samsung Kies. I legit cannot find any solution to it.
The thing that baffles me and is causing me a huge headache is the fact that THE PHONE IS NOT ROOTED. nothing has been done to it, its completely stock. So if there is no solution to it, can somebody at least tell me what might have been able to cause this?
Thanks to all,
Dariel

Probably bad sticky/stuck/sucky power button. That usually is the case when you can get into download mode but then it restarts.

having the same problem... phone worked great for a while the with darkside evolution..ICS.. my phone began randomly restarting on a daily basis... but now it just in a boot loop.. it makes it to the darkside evolution screen and then will eventually power off and reboot.. sometime it just vibrates and never boots.... once in a while it will boot all the way and when it loads the power off mode pops up and i try to hit recovery but i ussually will just reboot...... absolutely frustarting.... took it to a phone repair guy ,said he took the power button off and it did the same thing to him... he said it was a corrupt operating system.... not sure he is right.. think its a bad power button..... dont know what to do.. cant send it to warramnty with it rooted with a custom rom..
IF ANY ONYONE CAN HELP,PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But if thats the case, then how would I be able to fix it?

I doubt its a corrupt OS, because like I said in my original post; my sisters phone is completely stock. No custom rom, no root. Nothing. So I'm leaning more towards the bad power button situation.

As far as I read, with this problem, Jigs dont help because the phone turns off regardless if they're in download mode or not. goodluck tho.

I'm curious, did you all have the phone for a while, or did you recently get these phones? Sounds like a bad batch

i had same prob on galaxy note and i found out that it was power key problem, it was moistored and phone was thinking that power button was allwayes pushed. JIG wont help it will go in download mode for 3 seconds.

i only had th phone for about 2 months.... think you might be right...

it sounds like a bad power button
Like its been posted before, it sounds like you have a bad (or stuck) power button. OK try this (it might or might not work) take off the battery, and with your finger start rubbing the power button from side to side (take in consideration not to do it too hard, you don't want to hulk rub the phone to death). while you rub the button make sure to hear the click click every time you go over it. after that connect the battery and see if it boots. it worked for me. granted sometimes the problem comes back, so in all honesty this AINT a fix, its more of a workaround. but who knows it might work for you as well. Best of luck.

so i think these issues are different from OP. Though i can say, i did have the same issues you were describing.. im now happily on CM10 nightlies.. much faster and stable than the Darkside ICS rom!

Well I can verify that removing the power button from the mobo works brilliantly. No more boot loop on the t989 and nexus s. Only the middle and left or right side of the contacts need to be jumped to power it on. Remember it takes 10 seconds of holding a jumper there. Now where to find replacement buttons?
Hopes this helps guys.:good:
Alex K.
UbreakIfix technician.....

I think its a power button assembly problem. At first it would happen intermittently and it would go away till, no matter what I did, the phone would behave as if the power button was being pressed and not let go. It would happen more often when the phone would get moist due to rainy or humid conditions. So I opened up the phone, took the motherboard out and used a blow dryer on the power button area for about a minute, let it cool down and then reassemble (also blew some air in there just in case dust was causing the problem as well). The phone did not boot/reloop for a week. Then it started again, and I thought that maybe my case (d30 case) pushing on the power button really tightly all the time wasn't helping so, I cut away the are near the power button on my case and the problem has not come back in two weeks.
To Sum up....
Possible causes
-Tight cases pressing on the power buttons (Get a case that doesnt fit so tight on the phone, dont use one, or cut the power button area away from the case)
-Power button too sensitive to humidity and dust ( (disassemble , clean and heat the area up)
goood luck, my friend had the same problem before he traded it in to get an s3

Recovery Mode - HEAT will force access!

This deserves its own thread. For more people to see.
Alright guys, here it is.
I was able to access recovery mode on my bricked phone in a way that all of you may think is stupid.
I have a Bell Canada Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant. My phone somehow bricked it self a few days ago. I wasnt able to get into recovery mode at all, no matter what I tried, how many times, and I tried every single method with no success.
People on XDA Forums were mentioning about heat somehow allowing you to access the recovery mode. Some said putting it facedown in the sun for a few minutes, some said plugging it in for 15-20 min, some said playing games on the phone to heat it will would also allow them to access the un-accessible recovery mode on their phone.
I tried all of them.
I put my phone in the oven for 5 minutes, twice, last night, did not work.
Ok I thoght to myself. Maybe I need more heat. To get it hot to the touch.
So I tried once again today, and what a shock, I was able to get in recovery mode via the 3 button - WITH BATTERY OUT, HOLD VOL UP + HOME BUTTON + POWER BUTTON, then insert battery, and let go of the power button once your phone turns on.
Took 3 seconds to set everything to restore, in the recovery mode.
And done.
It worked for me.
If you are going to try this, maybe try with a hair blow dryer first.
I dont have one of those, so I couldnt, to be safer.
I will not be held accountable for any damage you do if you leave it in too long or damage your phone in any way.
This worked for me. Im happy I got it working.
The only thing which worries me now........
What if heat or cold can cause your phone to brick itself?
My phone bricked itself out of nowhere, no idea how. And what if it happens again.....

LMAO @ holey s*!t it f**king worked in the video. This is a very good post for people having the no recovery mode issue but I'd probably warn them not to go the idiot thing hand heat the phone up until it melts.

Im so embarrassed people keep commenting about that. I dont know what i was thinking.
I told people to try a hair blow dryer if they have one available. Hopefully people who cant access the recovery screen can do it after trying that out.
It may take 3 tries like me, but damn for sure it worked.
Previously before that I tried 3 button methods for 8 hours in total, never got it once.
I'm wondering HOW the heat gave you acces to the recovery screen

Ummm.... Did you try the pull the battery thing before heating the phone?
If heating actually makes a difference it may be a hardware fault, where a reflow off the board solves bad solder points. Same as with broken ps3s... I.m guessing that as with the ps3, the fix won't last... But in this case it may not be a problem unless you happen to brick the phone again.

I tried to do recovery with 3 button methods, all the methods, posted on this forum and others. For about 8 hours in 2 days none stop... 100's of times.
None of them worked. Only after the heat trick.

Left thumb on VOL UP
Right thumb on Home Button
Right index finger on power
And with my right hands pinky index and middle finger sliding the battery in.

It took me 3 tries in the oven. You might just have to keep trying.
I was going to give up last night, but I said f**k it, going to keep trying and it worked...
Alright so after re-installing most of my apps and games I just did a reboot (3 times), and it will not go into recovery.
After I did the oven trick, it worked right away. So I am 100% positive its heat that somehow allows it to enter recovery.
(I didnt let them take my phone, and they were out of stock, so I kept it to wait for more to be in stock)
When I was at the store a few days ago trying to exchange my phone.
A Bell store manager said that they have some special machine where they plug the phone into and it forces the phone into recovery.
I am guessing its a heating machine, maybe mini oven, in the back of the store.
This must be a Bell Manager's secret or something.
Im happy with my phone now, so its all good.
Congrats.
Nothing has worked for me so far, and according to the chap on the phone at Best Buy, it looks like no stock will be arriving until mid-next week. I'll be dropping by the store for a rain-check, as I'm almost done my 14-day exchange window with no stock in sight.

Man I dont know, but if heat can unbrick my phone, that says something...
If you read in the this entire thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754673
You will then see why I decided to put my phone in the oven.
Some people were saying that heating their phones, would allow it to access the recovery menu.
I just went all out with it.
And it is worrying... But wtf can we do, Samsung has to step up and tell us whats really going on!!!
Well, to add some credibility to this X-Filesy story, do a scan for text strings on your modem.bin file: believe it or nit, there is text mentioning a thermistor check in there (probably related to battery charging I think).
Since a thermistor is a kind of resistor whose resistance varies rapidly and predictably with temperature, and a piece of software specifically checks on its performance, it is not unlikely that the result of this check, depending on temperature, can influence the behaviour of other parts of the system.
In short, IMO, it's quite possible the phone is setup to get into recovery (or debug) mode easier when it is overheating (during charging, extreme CPU or GPU load, or whatever) to make it easier for the techies to find out what the @#$ is going wrong with it.
spbtv a heating machine lol

HELP! :(

My phone is stuck in bootloop, and My Volume down button does not work, so im unable to remove the battery and boot it into CWM for a restore..
is there anyway to get into cwm without volume down or booting into the os as im stuck in bootloop?
Using adb maybe although I don't know if you would be able to.
Try adb devices in command prompt with the phone connected to the computer.
If it shows up then type adb reboot recovery and it'll boot into recovery but since you are in a bootloop that may not work.
yeah it doesn't boot into the os so my pc won't recognize it
i could fix this if my freaking volume down button would work?? does anyone thing this will be covered under my samsung 1 yr manufacturers warranty??? has anyone delt with them on something like this??
Any way you can persuade the volume button to work?
Well I have never had dealings with them so really can answer that question bit you could tell them you had a defective volume button and corrupted memory.
I think that is kinda common for these, it would be a good excuse for the bootloop.
thing is it's sporting the Franco kernel boot animation
any tricks for making this button work????
i've tried to poke inside with a screw driver, it's not obstructed at all it's just not responding..
I had the same problem. You need to put your phone into stock and start over again. It's pain and time consuming but it's better than having a paper weight. Remember our phone is hard to brick so have that positive note and for the future reference what not to do. Cheers!

Ah I see...
Hmmmm, the only way is to play around with it, press it down and move it around. Push it left and right" that kinda thing. Trial and error.
Maybe before you bring it to the shop let the battery go completely dead so they don't see the boot animation.

hmm but the thing is it's rocking the franco kernel boot animation
arguably, it really is a hardware issue thats preventing me from repairing my phone..

So basically because i can't reset the flash counter on the phone there's no way i can send it in the state that it's in as i've flashed several roms on it, i ordered one of those usb jigs off of ebay to hopefully put it into odin mode so i can restore it..

as far as I know there is no flash counter in the gnex.

It's obviously doing something... Try to force download mode like this:
Hook up the phone with no battery inserted
Hold Vol Down + Home only

Ya if the battery is still warm, it is doing something. I'd try every absolute way to boot to download or recovery before sending it in.

So I gave it to Telus and said that I did a factory reset and then suddenly it turned off and won't turn back on. so they sent it for repair and said it would take 2-3 weeks. Right now is week 2 of 3. good luck.
well my phone was completely dead so I could use triangle away...I'm not worried about it. if they find out it just means they wont fix it for free...
thanks I need the luck, I'm completely phone free... its a funny feeling not having one... no worries though...
Crazy how dependent we are on these things. Too bad a jig doesn't work like on the GS2. That thing saved me when I had to send it in for warranty repair.

Phone Bricked! Help! :(

Dear god please help me . I wanted to switch over to a stock Android rom on my galaxy s3. The first one failed because it said that the product id didn't match even though it did, this was standard cyanogenmod. So I then tried one called Rootbox v3.6 and my phone will not turn on now!
It is a black screen and I cannot go into download mode, recovery mode, or even boot it. I'm getting very angry and upset and I don't know what to do! If I take the battery out and plug the phone in without it the LED will turn red for about 5-10 seconds but then turns off and the phone becomes completely unusable!
What should I do!?!?
Use Odin. Flash back to stock. Start over.

I was trying but how can I do it if the phone won't even turn on? :/
Tried to put it in Odin and it didn't show up at all. Phone is still nothing but a brick.
Just to make sure, download mode is power+ vol down+ home at the same time. Usually takes 5-10 seconds
Tried it a thousand times. Everything fails .
Is my phone dead?
Sounds like it could be.
That's not the answer I wanted to hear . What should I do!? If the battery is out and I plug it in the LED will turn red for about 5-10 seconds then turn off. What does that mean??

since we're desperate here, i'm just gonna go ahead and repeat the download mode steps but in this order: VOL DOWN + HOME + POWER
dont press power button first. also, before you smash it into the ground, grab a usb jig off amazon or ebay.

also, what is your S3 model (i747, i747m, i9300, etc)?
what is the exact name of the ROM download you used and where did you grab the download? the version you downloaded was released back in january i believe. rootbox is on version 3.9+ now. why the older ROM?
Your phone is hard bricked unfortunately that's exactly what it is. Search this forum for Jtag they're the only people that can fix it. Sorry for the bad news

i wanna know something
did you install i747 roms? or different version?
try hold power + home + up/down(i happen to run into one of these types of problem before though with an HTC device) for a very long time and see any reaction
also if the phone wouldn't turn on at all, you might wanna try replacing the battery like borrow friend's to test, it might be battery failure.
Its hard bricked unfortunately I know thats not what you wanted to hear. About all you can do is Google Jtag and you'll find the place to send it to be fixed. Cost you $60 or $80 to fix it.
"Say WHAT one more time!"
I called AT&T and they are sending me out a new one. They waived the 2 day shipping fee as well.
I recommend thoroughly reading the threads and when you think of trying something read some more and making a backup.
Right after rooting your new phone make a back up of your IMEI and learn how to restore it.
That little bit of information would've saved me $200 today.
I'm giving it to you free.

true story. IMEI backup at the very beginning is so important but never really preached. just as important as a nandroid itself.
i made a guide a couple weeks back due to lots of beginners doing things incorrectly (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2179330). the boards were packed full of the same 10 rooting/flashing/imei problems, repeated a hundred times. please share this with every newcomer and let's get people started off on the right foot. cheers
The imei is on the back of the phone? So why bother back it up?

While it's possible to restore your imei without a backup, you have a greater chance of success with a backup. Peoplesarmy's thread is a great, and easy, way to do it. Only takes a few minutes and the directions in the op ate very easy to follow.
Lose your IMEI in your phone files and you'll know why but go ahead and take your chances you'll regret it.

A few minutes of easy fix, or at least 20 to 30 minutes to fix (and this is generous). And the backup method has a MUCH better chance of working. This is a no brainer.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S3 Completely Dead

Forum Noob here, I was using my Galaxy S3 (Wind) and all of a sudden the screen went black and it turned off. Something similar had happened a couple hours before and the phone wouldn't turn on through the power button so I simply took out the battery and put it back in and it worked. Then when it happened for a second time I tried the same thing but to no avail the phone stayed dead.
So far I've tried:
Using another GS3 Stock Battery
Tried getting into download and recovery mode
Tried charging it (I do know that the battery is charging since I checked it on another phone. The red light is not on but it turns on when I take out the battery and then plug it in. After 20-30 seconds of battery insertion the red light goes away and is completely unresponsive all that time)
Tried Keeping the battery out of the phone for a couple of hours (Suggested by a friend)
Also Tried connecting it to a pc, and it only connects when I keep the battery out. When it finally connects it tries to install drivers for "QHSUSB_DLOAD" but fails.
I have no idea what's happening to my phone and I would like to get it fixed as soon as possible. After some searches I've narrowed down to either a Hard Brick or a Sudden Death Syndrome but it doesn't completely match with all the characteristics of either problem. I greatly appreciate any help and I would like to know what exactly the problem is and what my best viable option.
Thank you.
Don't know why, but it's bricked. But you mentioned it started working at one point when you put the battery in. So if you take it out, then put it back, does the phone automatically try to turn on by itself?
Qhsusb is a definite indicator of a brick, but if your power button is faulty it may have caused the brick by rebooting over and over without ever fully booting up. Basically causing corruption somewhere.
There's a debrick thread stickied in development, but if the button is also faulty it may not help for long.
Sudden death is only describing a problem the international models had after release. Doesn't apply to ours in that way.

Yeah, when you put the battery back in it doesn't do anything. Also I don't think the power button is faulty I mean it's been working fine for the last year didn't really give me any problems.

Only reason I suspect the power button is you mentioned you couldn't get it to turn on using the button, but removing/replacing the battery worked. And it can work perfectly and then fail out of nowhere. So goes when you have plastic parts! But lots of people have had issues with this button recently.
Wasn't trying to convince you that was the problem, just letting you know it's a potential culprit.
But if you think it's ok, then try to use KAsp3rd's debrick thread and see if that gets you going again.

If it's completely dead then it's most likely hard bricked. My phone just got hard bricked so you will need to buy a JIG of Ebay. If it's not that then try reflashing your ROM or re rooting it. If none of that works then just take your phone in too wherever you bought it from and have them fix it. Oh a JIG is a small USB that will re write it and force it into download mode.
Your phone in stock rom ? If stock rom that is suddenly dead mean bad emmc on the logic board with my experience.

Since they are seeing the QHUSB_DLOAD (which is technically a hard brick) a simple USB jig wouldn't work, however they can attempt to use my recovery method. It's at no cost and just takes some time and reading.
When you attempt to restart your phone, does anything come up at all? I've been having issues over the past week, culminating in a device that won't charge, and won't complete a boot sequence. I get as far as the Samsung splash screen (and occasionally the first snippet of the ROM's splash screen) and then....a black screen and a quick buzz. Then the whole process repeats. In my case, I believe it's the power button.

Remove and reinsert battery. If it turns on by itself, you are probably right about the button.

I went to a Samsung service center and they told me the motherboard had to be replaced.. I did some searching and found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2178484
I've come to the conclusion that it was indeed a bad emmc (Yes, I was using stock ROM).. Any thoughts?
Nope

If it indeed is a Bad EMC then it should be In Warranty Repair as Samsung does offer that. If you didn't have Insurance that is.
Thank you

Answered in the other thread. Just fyi, its best to only ask your question once, in one thread. It gets messy and confusing when different things are mentioned/attempted in different threads for the same issue.

STUCK
Well my s3 (us cellular r530u), has no boot but has a red led without the battery. Is there a debricking procedure? And if so..where can i find a debrick file.
There is for us. But you need to be in Sprints forums. Theres nothing for your device here, and I dont know what they have over there. Good luck though!
