This deserves its own thread. For more people to see.
Alright guys, here it is.
I was able to access recovery mode on my bricked phone in a way that all of you may think is stupid.
I have a Bell Canada Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant. My phone somehow bricked it self a few days ago. I wasnt able to get into recovery mode at all, no matter what I tried, how many times, and I tried every single method with no success.
People on XDA Forums were mentioning about heat somehow allowing you to access the recovery mode. Some said putting it facedown in the sun for a few minutes, some said plugging it in for 15-20 min, some said playing games on the phone to heat it will would also allow them to access the un-accessible recovery mode on their phone.
I tried all of them.
I put my phone in the oven for 5 minutes, twice, last night, did not work.
Ok I thoght to myself. Maybe I need more heat. To get it hot to the touch.
So I tried once again today, and what a shock, I was able to get in recovery mode via the 3 button - WITH BATTERY OUT, HOLD VOL UP + HOME BUTTON + POWER BUTTON, then insert battery, and let go of the power button once your phone turns on.
Took 3 seconds to set everything to restore, in the recovery mode.
And done.
It worked for me.
If you are going to try this, maybe try with a hair blow dryer first.
I dont have one of those, so I couldnt, to be safer.
I will not be held accountable for any damage you do if you leave it in too long or damage your phone in any way.
This worked for me. Im happy I got it working.
The only thing which worries me now........
What if heat or cold can cause your phone to brick itself?
My phone bricked itself out of nowhere, no idea how. And what if it happens again.....

LMAO @ holey s*!t it f**king worked in the video. This is a very good post for people having the no recovery mode issue but I'd probably warn them not to go the idiot thing hand heat the phone up until it melts.

Im so embarrassed people keep commenting about that. I dont know what i was thinking.
I told people to try a hair blow dryer if they have one available. Hopefully people who cant access the recovery screen can do it after trying that out.
It may take 3 tries like me, but damn for sure it worked.
Previously before that I tried 3 button methods for 8 hours in total, never got it once.
I'm wondering HOW the heat gave you acces to the recovery screen

Ummm.... Did you try the pull the battery thing before heating the phone?
If heating actually makes a difference it may be a hardware fault, where a reflow off the board solves bad solder points. Same as with broken ps3s... I.m guessing that as with the ps3, the fix won't last... But in this case it may not be a problem unless you happen to brick the phone again.

I tried to do recovery with 3 button methods, all the methods, posted on this forum and others. For about 8 hours in 2 days none stop... 100's of times.
None of them worked. Only after the heat trick.

I did it by myself.
Left thumb on VOL UP
Right thumb on Home Button
Right index finger on power
And with my right hands pinky index and middle finger sliding the battery in.

It took me 3 tries in the oven. You might just have to keep trying.
I was going to give up last night, but I said f**k it, going to keep trying and it worked...
Alright so after re-installing most of my apps and games I just did a reboot (3 times), and it will not go into recovery.
After I did the oven trick, it worked right away. So I am 100% positive its heat that somehow allows it to enter recovery.
(I didnt let them take my phone, and they were out of stock, so I kept it to wait for more to be in stock)
When I was at the store a few days ago trying to exchange my phone.
A Bell store manager said that they have some special machine where they plug the phone into and it forces the phone into recovery.
I am guessing its a heating machine, maybe mini oven, in the back of the store.
This must be a Bell Manager's secret or something.
Im happy with my phone now, so its all good.
Congrats.
Nothing has worked for me so far, and according to the chap on the phone at Best Buy, it looks like no stock will be arriving until mid-next week. I'll be dropping by the store for a rain-check, as I'm almost done my 14-day exchange window with no stock in sight.

Man I dont know, but if heat can unbrick my phone, that says something...
If you read in the this entire thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754673
You will then see why I decided to put my phone in the oven.
Some people were saying that heating their phones, would allow it to access the recovery menu.
I just went all out with it.
And it is worrying... But wtf can we do, Samsung has to step up and tell us whats really going on!!!
Well, to add some credibility to this X-Filesy story, do a scan for text strings on your modem.bin file: believe it or nit, there is text mentioning a thermistor check in there (probably related to battery charging I think).
Since a thermistor is a kind of resistor whose resistance varies rapidly and predictably with temperature, and a piece of software specifically checks on its performance, it is not unlikely that the result of this check, depending on temperature, can influence the behaviour of other parts of the system.
In short, IMO, it's quite possible the phone is setup to get into recovery (or debug) mode easier when it is overheating (during charging, extreme CPU or GPU load, or whatever) to make it easier for the techies to find out what the @#$ is going wrong with it.
spbtv a heating machine lol

My friend's S2 is having the following issues:
The phone will not turn on (Darkside 3.6 ROM with DarksideX Kernel). The phone will show the Samsung logo, the Darkside X kernel flash and then it would shut off. It will then have a constant vibration ever 2 seconds or so.
I tried going into recovery mode to try and wipe all the caches, but the phone will not let me go into recovery mode at all. It will give me the constant vibration mentioned above.
I'm guessing the issue is being caused by Kernel crash so I tried going into download mode so I could try and flash a new Kernel via Odin, but once I get into the warning screen and I press volume up to go to download mode, the phone go into download mode for a split second before shutting off and go into the constant vibration mode again.
Any idea what's going on? Or did anyone have had these problems in the past?
I flashed her phone a few months ago and it's been working flawlessly until last night. So I know it's not a bad flash. I'm getting frustrated here because I can't keep the phone turned on long enough to re-flash or to ODIN or to do anything.
Any help is appreciated!
Try letting it sit for a couple of minutes, the battery might have drained too much. This happened to me before I hope this helps, every once in a while when it turns off and on try to boot into recovery and just reboot back out to restart the phone to a normal boot.

I've tried letting the phone sit for hours.
I've tried unplugging and then plugging back in and not touching it for hours.
I've tried charging the battery to 100% (with my phone) and then putting it in my friend's phone.
Nothing's working
Sounds like the power button may be stuck, or a hardware failure.

Power button is definitely not stuck.
I'm worried that it's hardware failure, but the phone is still under warranty and if that's the case, I'm trying to get this back to stock so I can claim the warranty.

This happened to a couple people a while ago. One had some lint or corrosion on the battery contacts, they cleaned it, and that fixed it.
skrambled said:
BOOM!!!! I fixed it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I knew it was a battery or battery connection issue. I removed the back plating and noticed that there was some lint on the inside that was bridging the battery connections (I don't know the tech terms, sorry).
Used some air duster and blew it out. Reassembled and it is working like a charm now.
(If Joosty is reading this, I did a factory data reset--including USB storage--immediately so no worries about any personal data you may have had on there.)
EDIT: For anyone trying this fix just thought I'd mention that I used a 1/16 screwdriver to get the screws out and that getting the cover off was a little tricky--I thought I was going to break the plastic when trying to pop it off. Also, the volume rocker button falls right out so make sure to watch for that...

Try to just put the battery in and hold the volume up and down button while it keeps booting up and down with the vibration thingy going on. It usually just boots into recovery might take a few tries just be patient and hold down the volume up and down buttons

Damn... I guess you should try a jig, that's the only thing I have in mind. Sometimes you need to take everything out such as the sim card, Sdcard etc... let sit for 5 minutes then try to put the battery in to go into download mode. Last time I was getting so frustrated and noticed the USB cable was still in and that was the reason I couldn't get into recovery I was so heated! Haha anyways I hope this helps.

Yeah, I'm ordering a jig and hoping that it would force my phone to download mode and keep it on long enough for me to flash new kernel or stock rom.
But I did try letting the phone sit overnight before attempting anything to it with no results. If the jig doesn't work, I'm just going to send it in for the JTAG service. I e-mailed them and they said they would be able to fix it.
What??

This does not make sense. First, were you able to go into download mode using Vol up+down and USB cable plugged in to computer? If you can, then press vol up to continue and start ODIN on your desktop, flash the stock ROM (download from the Galaxy S2 Android Dev threads) and see if that works.
To me this does not sound like a hardware but more like a corrupt software issue.
I hope you just don't waste your money for nothing here.

As I'd mentioned in my first post, I'm able to go into download mode, but I'm unable to keep the phone turned on for me to do anything with ODIN.
I'm hoping that by using the JIG, it will somehow force my phone to stay in download mode long enough for me to flash.
That happened when my phone's Seidio battery had some liquid spilled on it. It did the same exact thing but I used my stock battery to boot it, let the phone run from the charger and replaced the battery. That fixed it for me. Try using another battery.

I have the same problem! please help
Ok, so heres the deal. The s2 is my sisters phone, and she comes home and told me the phone wont turn on, that its stuck on the boot screen and it just keeps turning off and doing it again. So I started looking into it (Im an iPhone user, so I'm not too familiar with android devices. BUT I do know a bit about computers, cell phones and just technology in general). I ended up finding out that its stuck in a soft brick. So I started youtubing how to fix it. Found a great method using Odin3 and Samsung Kies. AND IT WORKED. I turned the phone back on, got past the lock screen and everything was all good.
After about 30 seconds, THE PHONE BRICKED AGAIN. And it went right back into the boot loop, I cant get it into download mode because it just keeps restarting after a couple of seconds. With that happening, I cant get the computer to recognize it so I can do a recovery fix with Samsung Kies. I legit cannot find any solution to it.
The thing that baffles me and is causing me a huge headache is the fact that THE PHONE IS NOT ROOTED. nothing has been done to it, its completely stock. So if there is no solution to it, can somebody at least tell me what might have been able to cause this?
Thanks to all,
Dariel

I doubt its a corrupt OS, because like I said in my original post; my sisters phone is completely stock. No custom rom, no root. Nothing. So I'm leaning more towards the bad power button situation.

i only had th phone for about 2 months.... think you might be right...
it sounds like a bad power button
Like its been posted before, it sounds like you have a bad (or stuck) power button. OK try this (it might or might not work) take off the battery, and with your finger start rubbing the power button from side to side (take in consideration not to do it too hard, you don't want to hulk rub the phone to death). while you rub the button make sure to hear the click click every time you go over it. after that connect the battery and see if it boots. it worked for me. granted sometimes the problem comes back, so in all honesty this AINT a fix, its more of a workaround. but who knows it might work for you as well. Best of luck.

so i think these issues are different from OP. Though i can say, i did have the same issues you were describing.. im now happily on CM10 nightlies.. much faster and stable than the Darkside ICS rom!
Well I can verify that removing the power button from the mobo works brilliantly. No more boot loop on the t989 and nexus s. Only the middle and left or right side of the contacts need to be jumped to power it on. Remember it takes 10 seconds of holding a jumper there. Now where to find replacement buttons?
Hopes this helps guys.:good:
Alex K.
UbreakIfix technician.....
I think its a power button assembly problem. At first it would happen intermittently and it would go away till, no matter what I did, the phone would behave as if the power button was being pressed and not let go. It would happen more often when the phone would get moist due to rainy or humid conditions. So I opened up the phone, took the motherboard out and used a blow dryer on the power button area for about a minute, let it cool down and then reassemble (also blew some air in there just in case dust was causing the problem as well). The phone did not boot/reloop for a week. Then it started again, and I thought that maybe my case (d30 case) pushing on the power button really tightly all the time wasn't helping so, I cut away the are near the power button on my case and the problem has not come back in two weeks.
To Sum up....
Possible causes
-Tight cases pressing on the power buttons (Get a case that doesnt fit so tight on the phone, dont use one, or cut the power button area away from the case)
-Power button too sensitive to humidity and dust ( (disassemble , clean and heat the area up)
goood luck, my friend had the same problem before he traded it in to get an s3
Now before you say its not hard bricked, just use odin/download mode bla bla bla, know that I do know what I am talking about. I was odining WITH PARTION ON to go from mtd to bml and my computer power cut out. Now I can't turn my phone on OR get into download mode . I looked into th e unbrickable mod but apparently that's just more of an untested thing (at least for the epic). That pretty much means I can only get a new phone (probably get the note 2). However I was wondering for the time being if I turned this into sprint, assuming they don't know whats wrong with it and i play dumb, Will they just replace my phone cause I have tep? Or will i have to make an assurion claim? Or should i use an old crap phone for the next 3 weeks until i can get my gnote 2?
A month or so ago, I thought I had hard bricked from an odin disconnect. I searched & tried EVERYTHING and couldn't get it to DL mode. Somewhere in XDA I stumbled on a suggested unbrick method that amazingly worked. I wish I could find that post & hit Thanks.
- Close the keyboard
- Put the battery in
- Press the power button TWICE with short presses
- Plug in your USB cable
- Use 1+Power to fire up DL Mode
- Voila!!
I know it sounds overly simple, but it worked for me. I was shocked.

I don't know why, but they seemed to work...thank you!
Well, I guess my memory isn't so hot. I found the original post here. The instruction should have been to press the power button twice with the the battery OUT. I'm glad it worked for you anyway.

My friend told me it had something to do with waiting for the static something or other to clear with the battery out...so it may not have been your method. Just the two hours i got frusturated and didn't do anything with it and the battery out.

this drains the power out of the phone board, you could also unplug the battery and plug the phone into a WALL charger while holding power and 1, then after you get into download mode plug the battery in and take it to the usb for odin.

If its been 30 days you can go back to any sprint store and they have to give you a new one. I've done it. not for the s3 but for other phones. Thats considered a manufacturers defect.
Hi
I have a serious problem. In short, my phone is starting normally until it reaches to the Lock Screen it hangs there for a sec then it will restart and keeps like this until it is out of battery. Also for me the volume down button doesnt work at all meaning I cant reach to Bootloader.
Details:
One day my HOX fall into my fish tank but I was able to take it out immediately and put it into bag of rice and it survived with two things not working: headset input and the Volume Down button.
Ok. I had no problems without them until last night. I have Android Revolution HD but dont know which version I dont remember. I wanted to go back to stock. And here what I did as much as I can remember:
- Flashed secure BOOT.IMG. I took it out from RUU 1.29.415.
- Flashed Recovery also took it from RUU.
- Relocked it.
Until now I had no problem I was able to use HTC Quick Root to restart to bootloader. Actually After relocking it was rebooting always to bootloader. I was never able to go to Recovery at all.
The real problems started when UNLOCKED it again.
Now what is going on is that it is looping as I mentioned at the beginning. I CANT go to bootloader because of the button problem. And Mainly the HTC Quick Root cant recognize it when I connect it to My Laptop although I'm sure the laptop does.
I tried RUU a time and it showed me version error.
Please advise. I am desperate I cant afford buying a new phone. What should I do?
Hope those fishies didnt fry !

No the tank was empty I was filling the tank only.
Update:
I have just uninstalled HTC drivers from my laptop and installed them again. When I connect my HOX - it is turned off- I got the following :
USB Composite Device --- Ready to use.
USB Mass storage --- Ready to use.
MyHTC -- Ready to use.
HTC Android Phone USB Device --- Ready to use.
But the problem remains as it is.

Take it apart and wash it with isopropyl alcohol. You should be able to find some guides for this type of thing.

OH no man. Just looking at the video scared me out. I dont have the skill doing that I know I will damage it.
Well, the question is Why the program wont see it connected while it will be recognized by the laptop even if the mobile is off ? I just need a way somehow to go to the bootloaders.

The more you use it, the less likely you'll be able to fix it. You need to disconnect the battery.
Impurities in the water will short the electronics and fry them.
The alcohol will help dissolve the impurities and clean the components, it will evaporate without leaving a nasty residue.
Good luck, but don't hold out too much hope.

Well, the water accident happened months ago. So I guess it is too late to do that.

Find a repair shop and see if they'll take on a water-damage repair. If they dont seem confident (like they've done it before - they might confidently express doubt!), try another.
WOW. I was able to go to Fastboot simply by pressing the Volume down hard, REALLY HARD.
So now I am confused and scared what to do.
flash a rom!!

Hey guys!
QUICK SPECS:
- SPH-L710RWBSPR (Marble White 16gb version)
- Under a year old
Okay so I'm almost certain my s3 has Sudden Death Syndrome as it won't turn on each time, and fails to stay on after occasionally turning on once. The power button has failed I can tell, as the power menu randomly pops up when its on, and then BOOM the screen goes black and it's off again. I have tried multiple batteries, download mode, recovery mode, usb recognition from the computer, heck even adb into recovery.. NO AVAIL. So, all in all, my beautiful phone - is now an
Now --- my question is! WHAT SHOULD I SAY TO SPRINT OVER THE PHONE? In order to get a free replacement phone? There's no Samsung Service Center around me and so I must go through Sprint. I just don't want to deal with any representatives that think the way to deal with customers is like a child. ESPECIALLY when the customer could do their job better than them. ANYWAY, /endrant. I read from a post it's safe to say, ""I charged my phone for 3 hours before bed.. unplugged it... and screen flashed white... and it keeps rebooting itself and it wont stop.."...Do NOT tell them you left it on the charger for 5+ hours!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats possible internal damage and voids warranty.""
Should I do that, or just tell the truth and say "My phone has the Sudden Death Syndrome and I would like a replacement."
Thanks guys, I appreciate the input.
Colton
Um idk where you read the 5+ hours can hurt your phone. Every newer electronic device has overload protection built into it.
I would just explain to them whats happening. They most likely will walk you through the usual trouble shooting steps. Or you can take it to a Authorized Sprint Service center.

Okay, thanks man. I'm just worried about the whole "if your're rooted your warranty is void" thing. Because I'm running a custom ROM on my phone, but if it is impossible to boot up, Sprint won't be able to tell right? So I'm all good right?
If they get it booted up, then yes they could. I've seen a Authorized Sprint Service center repair a broken power button. But I've also seen them just issue a refurb. It depends on the tech that looks at it. Idk if they would just issue you a refurb over the phone without one of their techs looking at it.

Yes they could look at it, but it's not just the power button that's broken. The issue with Sudden Death Syndrome is that it's an eMMC Firmware malfunction and so the chip is messed up, and so basically this is all Samsung's fault, not mine. I have read in this case, I would not get a refurbished phone, I would get a brand new replacement.
Also, I have tried to see if I can revert to stock again. But in my situation, is there any way to even do that? My computer doesn't recognize my phone when I try to connect it, and I can't get into download mode or recovery or anything.
Could I possibly try this method? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43305728 even if my phone has the SDS issue?
EMMC failure issue was only for the international i9300 US s3s aren't effected by that

This^
The SDS forQualcomm S3's is that the power button gets sunken in its socket, or otherwise damaged and causes the phone to continuously power itself off.

Oh, okay. So can my phone still have Sudden Death Syndrome though? It would just be a malfunction of the power button?
Also, do you by chance think my phone could be revived following the process of this thread? : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2345860&page=3

Okay, have you come across a fix in my situation then?
Compressed air can? Hitting the power button on the end of a washer? What do you think Cnexus?
LOL. Don't do the second one. Unless you have an upgrade/money to buy a new phone...
Compressed air has helped people. Also taking it apart and messing with the power button a bit and then putting it back together, as well as just jiggling the power button around
All you really need is for it to stay alive long enough for you to boot into DL mode and Odin back to stock

Alright cool I'll do that man. Do I just youtube "how to take a galaxy s3 apart and mess with power button" or what? Is there a guide somehwere? I'll have to buy a small screwdriver right?
And odin to stock MD4 right?
Also, there's no hope for backing up my phone at this point right? I haven't backed it up in a while.
