My phone is stuck in bootloop, and My Volume down button does not work, so im unable to remove the battery and boot it into CWM for a restore..
is there anyway to get into cwm without volume down or booting into the os as im stuck in bootloop?
Using adb maybe although I don't know if you would be able to.
Try adb devices in command prompt with the phone connected to the computer.
If it shows up then type adb reboot recovery and it'll boot into recovery but since you are in a bootloop that may not work.
yeah it doesn't boot into the os so my pc won't recognize it
i could fix this if my freaking volume down button would work?? does anyone thing this will be covered under my samsung 1 yr manufacturers warranty??? has anyone delt with them on something like this??
Any way you can persuade the volume button to work?
Well I have never had dealings with them so really can answer that question bit you could tell them you had a defective volume button and corrupted memory.
I think that is kinda common for these, it would be a good excuse for the bootloop.
thing is it's sporting the Franco kernel boot animation
any tricks for making this button work????
i've tried to poke inside with a screw driver, it's not obstructed at all it's just not responding..
I had the same problem. You need to put your phone into stock and start over again. It's pain and time consuming but it's better than having a paper weight. Remember our phone is hard to brick so have that positive note and for the future reference what not to do. Cheers!

Ah I see...
Hmmmm, the only way is to play around with it, press it down and move it around. Push it left and right" that kinda thing. Trial and error.
Maybe before you bring it to the shop let the battery go completely dead so they don't see the boot animation.

How did you return your device to stock if you couldn't boot into recover or the os?
If it is boot looping then your ok because they can't see anything. IMHO your good to go.

They can see his non-stock boot animation though
hmm but the thing is it's rocking the franco kernel boot animation
arguably, it really is a hardware issue thats preventing me from repairing my phone..
im hoping they won't just up and say that it's rooted so we dont' cover phsyical issues..
i've only had this phone 2.5 months
This is tough... So your vol buttons are broken? Hmm only solution would be adb or warranty... Sorry bud I'm out of options

No!!!!
Tell them nothing of the sort!! Say broken volume rocker or corrupted eMMC.
So basically because i can't reset the flash counter on the phone there's no way i can send it in the state that it's in as i've flashed several roms on it, i ordered one of those usb jigs off of ebay to hopefully put it into odin mode so i can restore it..
If there's anyone reading this that's in Vancouver BC that has a jig that might want to help a guy out i'd be forever greatful
as far as I know there is no flash counter in the gnex.

I just bricked my rooted T989. Nothing happens when I hit power (no display) and my PC does not show the drives when I connect via USB. I have tried vol buttons + power (with battery and [no battery + cable]). Does anyone have any ideas as to what I should try next? Is TMO likely to replace/repair my phone even though it had been rooted?
Have you tried getting into download mode? And what caused the brick?

This is really embarassing but I somehow stumbled up WickedRom, which is for the I9100, somehow thought it was for T989, and tried to flash it. Obviously a major league screw up. I have requested a replacement from TMO. I just hope they don't hit me with a major financial penalty if Samsung notices that it has been rooted (it was rooted when I tried flashing WickedRom).

Same thing happened here... I was odining back to stock and the power in my office at work went out... total fail. All Black, no power button, battery pull or Jig will make the phone do anything... anyone find a work around for this... I did this to my VIB before and was able to get it to work again but this just feels bad. Any help is appreciated. Los Angeles area dev's feel free to come play with it.
hey i know im new here but i got the answer... u need 2 odin back 2 stock 4 download mode pull battery plug usb into computer then 2 phone hold vol up and trackpad then insert battery and u will be in download mode also if using CWM dont fix permissions and also dont forget 2 place unzipped recovery file in /system/bin folder and overwrite it over existing file also make sure that cache, data, sdcard ,and system are all unmounted in mounts option of recovery took me 3 days of flashin back 2 stock with odin and soft bricking my phone 2 figure this out hope it helps

perhaps people should have shown a bit more support?
Your fault !
Damn that sounds bad, big mistake on your part though, differentiating between i9100 and T-989 is key, among the other models too.
Mine did the same thing after doing a backup. I'm in the 30 day grace period and I'm gonna try to take it back in.. Hopefully I get away with it unless I find a way to fix it

Only way is to send it to Samsung or get it JTAG. JTAG will probably be cheaper.
Hi,
About 1,5 months ago I received my first Android phone, a Galaxy Nexus.
I have unlocked the bootloader, rooted it en eventually installed Clockwork Mod Recovery following guides on this excellent forum! Everything went perfectly and it ran very smoothly in that state for about half a month up until yesterday.
I didn't have any custom roms installed, so I received the notification for the Android 4.0.2 update, it failed because of Clockwork Mod which I later found out. So I set about to manually install it, I downloaded the image from the google site and placed it in my home directory on my Phone, when I then wanted to restart to start in recovery mode it didn't do anything.
I tried getting the battery out and in, sim card out and in, recharging it,...
It does nothing, not even a small vibration signaling the phone is trying to start.
Anyone has any ideas to fix it, or might it be possible to send it back to the shop ( even though it is rooted etc. ?)
Thanks in advance,
Exatto
You need to get the stock images and flash using Odin or the ADB/Fastboot method. After which the phone will return to stock. Then you can root and do what you like. Lots of guieds on here on how to do it. Good luck.

By the way if you send back a rooted phone they will tell you to take a jump. Rooting voids the warranty.

I don't think there is a real brick. There are restore images. Extremely hard to brick a nexus...borderline impossible.

No, that's the point. I can't get in any modes. It does't react at all. I think it might be a hardware fault, a friend suggested it might be due to a short circuit battery.
I just followed this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419170) to update, using method 1, having clockwork mod installed. And when I shut it down to restart in recovery mode it suddenly stopped reacting. I have had this before, but then taking the battery in and out fixed everything. Now it doesn't anymore.
Cool, well if removing the battery for a few minutes doesnt sort it then you should be able to return it because the carrier won't be able to tell if it is rooted if they can't turn it on.
When you charge it do you get the charging battery icon when you press the power button?

No, not a charging sign. I hope I can return it, but what if the battery is faulty and they just pop a new one in and then see that it is rooted?

Could well be a dead battery dude, if you have a mate with a Nexus you could try yourself first. I know what you mean about the guy in the shop seeing the unlocked bootloader if he tried a different battery but you may be lucky in that he might not know what it is or you could just grab the phone and leg it ha ha
I hope it gets sorted and be sure to post here what happens. Take it easy.

As promised the followup:
Luckily they didn't notice my GN was rooted etc. as today I received a brand new one after I sent the broken one in to an official Samsung repair center
I did test some things before I sent it in though, a friend just bought a new one and we tested if my battery worked in his phone (it didn't) and we tested his working battery in my phone (it didn't work either), so something was definitely very screwed up.
Haven't got any idea of what went wrong eventually as the repair service didn't offer any details, although I am off course glad I got a brand new one.
So I recently ****ed my gnex 6 ways from sunday. Im talkin no screen no dl mode no fastboot. NOTHIN, ZILTCH. When plugged into comp i get the noise over and over again as if im removing and repluggin the cord repeatedly. sometimes after 20 minutes of that it will finally show up in device manager as unknown device or OMAP440. but thats rarely and it dont stay long. Im no noob and this seems a clear cut case of a Hard Brick. But I beg of you, PLease prove me wrong. Thanks all.
Got the jig. Yup, this thing is ****ed. Probly gna send it to the big S jus to see what they gotta say. Thanks to all those who helped.
I'm pretty sure there is a usb jig that will force odin mode. If that doesn't work I think you'd be screwed. Here's a video on how to make your own jig. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKRrTZayRxU
Or you can buy one already made for $5.50 US at http://usbjig.com/
What were you flashing when this happened?
a little info on how this happened can help.
Are you unlocked and rooted?
Did you drop the phone?
If you call the phone, does it ring?
In other words, is it your screen that's broken? I recently returned a rooted HTC thunderbolt with a non functioning screen back to stock to take advantage of factory warranty.

this is one of the reasons why phone companies are so against unlocking bootloaders. people screw up their rooted, unlocked phones and then send it back to vzw or the manufacturer to cover the bill.
if you're going to root your phone and mod it, then man up and accept the consequences when you derp it.
not saying the op isn't going to accept full responsibility, but your advice is what's wrong w/ some in this rooted community.
Since the linux installer is only using chroot then one would think that it is simply adding its distro to the system partition then chrooting to start. How this bricked you is puzzling. There's no flashing operation here...
I'm guessing hardware failure. The coincidence is hard to ignore though. However, you weren't there when it actually died so who knows what happened.
i was flashing stock ICS 4.0.4 with Odin and then half way through an error came up. so i removed closed Odin from the PC and tried redoing it. and then it was saying analyzing files.
and so i closed it again and restarted the phone. and what came on the screen was a sign, with a phone dots an exclamation mark dots and a monitor. i think thats when the phones bricked rite? any help?

happened to me do you have version 1.85 of odin and do you have a propper version of 4.0.4
odin 1.85 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1394051&highlight=odin+stock
the 4.0.4 version i used here http://code.google.com/android/nexus/images.html
i had the same thing on my screen and it all worked fine the second time round.. i tried for a total of 8 hours doing different things but this worked with the latest odin.
make sure you load via the pda Make sure in the ODIN program "Re-Partition", "Phone EFS Clear", and "Phone Bootloader Update" are NOT checked.
hope that works. im a total novice but worked a dream

Sorry your post is so retarded I have to double reply.
Do you really think the tiny amount of repairs coming from botched hacks is the reason most companies are locking bootloaders? Like really..
My advice is what's wrong? Hmm..
Maybe the OP should "man up" and go buy a new handset instead of Samsung hiring some monkey for $12 an hour to hook his phone up to a jig.

Ok, so heres the deal. The s2 is my sisters phone, and she comes home and told me the phone wont turn on, that its stuck on the boot screen and it just keeps turning off and doing it again. So I started looking into it (Im an iPhone user, so I'm not too familiar with android devices. BUT I do know a bit about computers, cell phones and just technology in general). I ended up finding out that its stuck in a soft brick. So I started youtubing how to fix it. Found a great method using Odin3 and Samsung Kies. AND IT WORKED. I turned the phone back on, got past the lock screen and everything was all good.
After about 30 seconds, THE PHONE BRICKED AGAIN. And it went right back into the boot loop, I cant get it into download mode because it just keeps restarting after a couple of seconds. With that happening, I cant get the computer to recognize it so I can do a recovery fix with Samsung Kies. I legit cannot find any solution to it.
The thing that baffles me and is causing me a huge headache is the fact that THE PHONE IS NOT ROOTED. nothing has been done to it, its completely stock. So if there is no solution to it, can somebody at least tell me what might have been able to cause this?
Thanks to all,
Dariel

I doubt its a corrupt OS, because like I said in my original post; my sisters phone is completely stock. No custom rom, no root. Nothing. So I'm leaning more towards the bad power button situation.

Like its been posted before, it sounds like you have a bad (or stuck) power button. OK try this (it might or might not work) take off the battery, and with your finger start rubbing the power button from side to side (take in consideration not to do it too hard, you don't want to hulk rub the phone to death). while you rub the button make sure to hear the click click every time you go over it. after that connect the battery and see if it boots. it worked for me. granted sometimes the problem comes back, so in all honesty this AINT a fix, its more of a workaround. but who knows it might work for you as well. Best of luck.

so i think these issues are different from OP. Though i can say, i did have the same issues you were describing.. im now happily on CM10 nightlies.. much faster and stable than the Darkside ICS rom!
Well I can verify that removing the power button from the mobo works brilliantly. No more boot loop on the t989 and nexus s. Only the middle and left or right side of the contacts need to be jumped to power it on. Remember it takes 10 seconds of holding a jumper there. Now where to find replacement buttons?
Hopes this helps guys.:good:

I think its a power button assembly problem. At first it would happen intermittently and it would go away till, no matter what I did, the phone would behave as if the power button was being pressed and not let go. It would happen more often when the phone would get moist due to rainy or humid conditions. So I opened up the phone, took the motherboard out and used a blow dryer on the power button area for about a minute, let it cool down and then reassemble (also blew some air in there just in case dust was causing the problem as well). The phone did not boot/reloop for a week. Then it started again, and I thought that maybe my case (d30 case) pushing on the power button really tightly all the time wasn't helping so, I cut away the are near the power button on my case and the problem has not come back in two weeks.
To Sum up....
Possible causes
-Tight cases pressing on the power buttons (Get a case that doesnt fit so tight on the phone, dont use one, or cut the power button area away from the case)
-Power button too sensitive to humidity and dust ( (disassemble , clean and heat the area up)
goood luck, my friend had the same problem before he traded it in to get an s3
My screen is cracked. And a friend wants to sell me his galaxy s3 (perfect screen but bricked) for cheap. Would it be possible to simply take the motherboard from my phone, and put it in the other phone? Or would me having a custom rom and recovery, mess up with other parts of the phone? I wouldn't think so, since all the main chips seem to be on the motherboard. But I just wanted to get the opinion of someone who probably has more knowledge of this stuff than me.

Very easy and yes it will work. Just had one apart today. Just pull screws on back. Back plate is 2 part. Pull all connectors from board. 2 score was and its out. Just be careful removing board. The volume and power buttons are fragile. Imei on plate under battery will be wrong but no biggie.
How bricked are we talking?

Thanks and it gets stuck on the first samsung splash screen. I'm not sure what to make of it, I at least never heard of that kind of brick. But for 50 bucks, I'd rather take my chances with that rather than 200 for a whole new screen assembly.

What kind of brick is it exactly...if it boots up in any way it probably isn't completely bricked.
Eh Soft-bricked. Can easily fix but shouldn't tell him if you want his phone lol.
Basically, he only needs to get in download mode (vol down+home+power) and flash stock with Odin.

Yeah if you see a splash screen it's fine 99% of the time and just flash it stock... also depends on how good of a friend you are . I'd tell him
It won't go into download mode, that's the weird part about that brick, and why he's selling it to me for so cheap. recovery mode doesn't work either. Just shows the first splash screen and that's it a jtag (I think it's called) will probably get it to go into download mode, but whatever, I just want the screen

Eh, if it boots, it isn't hardbricked. JTAG probably isn't needed. You would be surprised how many people can't get in to DL or Recovery mode because they are doing it wrong. If you do buy his phone, I would restore it rather than risk swapping out screens and such.

A quick jig hit and it would be forced into download mode. But yeah, you're right. Usually it's user error :silly:
I bought it today and I definitely know how to get into download mode and it won't let me. Gonna get a precision screwdriver set tomorrow, then swap the boards thanks for your help everyone!
