[Q] Samsung Galaxy S3 Completely Dead - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Forum Noob here, I was using my Galaxy S3 (Wind) and all of a sudden the screen went black and it turned off. Something similar had happened a couple hours before and the phone wouldn't turn on through the power button so I simply took out the battery and put it back in and it worked. Then when it happened for a second time I tried the same thing but to no avail the phone stayed dead.
So far I've tried:
Using another GS3 Stock Battery
Tried getting into download and recovery mode
Tried charging it (I do know that the battery is charging since I checked it on another phone. The red light is not on but it turns on when I take out the battery and then plug it in. After 20-30 seconds of battery insertion the red light goes away and is completely unresponsive all that time)
Tried Keeping the battery out of the phone for a couple of hours (Suggested by a friend)
Also Tried connecting it to a pc, and it only connects when I keep the battery out. When it finally connects it tries to install drivers for "QHSUSB_DLOAD" but fails.
I have no idea what's happening to my phone and I would like to get it fixed as soon as possible. After some searches I've narrowed down to either a Hard Brick or a Sudden Death Syndrome but it doesn't completely match with all the characteristics of either problem. I greatly appreciate any help and I would like to know what exactly the problem is and what my best viable option.
Thank you.

Don't know why, but it's bricked. But you mentioned it started working at one point when you put the battery in. So if you take it out, then put it back, does the phone automatically try to turn on by itself?
Qhsusb is a definite indicator of a brick, but if your power button is faulty it may have caused the brick by rebooting over and over without ever fully booting up. Basically causing corruption somewhere.
There's a debrick thread stickied in development, but if the button is also faulty it may not help for long.
Sudden death is only describing a problem the international models had after release. Doesn't apply to ours in that way.

Yeah, when you put the battery back in it doesn't do anything. Also I don't think the power button is faulty I mean it's been working fine for the last year didn't really give me any problems.

Only reason I suspect the power button is you mentioned you couldn't get it to turn on using the button, but removing/replacing the battery worked. And it can work perfectly and then fail out of nowhere. So goes when you have plastic parts! But lots of people have had issues with this button recently.
Wasn't trying to convince you that was the problem, just letting you know it's a potential culprit.
But if you think it's ok, then try to use KAsp3rd's debrick thread and see if that gets you going again.

If it's completely dead then it's most likely hard bricked. My phone just got hard bricked so you will need to buy a JIG of Ebay. If it's not that then try reflashing your ROM or re rooting it. If none of that works then just take your phone in too wherever you bought it from and have them fix it. Oh a JIG is a small USB that will re write it and force it into download mode.

Your phone in stock rom ? If stock rom that is suddenly dead mean bad emmc on the logic board with my experience.

Since they are seeing the QHUSB_DLOAD (which is technically a hard brick) a simple USB jig wouldn't work, however they can attempt to use my recovery method. It's at no cost and just takes some time and reading.

When you attempt to restart your phone, does anything come up at all? I've been having issues over the past week, culminating in a device that won't charge, and won't complete a boot sequence. I get as far as the Samsung splash screen (and occasionally the first snippet of the ROM's splash screen) and then....a black screen and a quick buzz. Then the whole process repeats. In my case, I believe it's the power button.

Remove and reinsert battery. If it turns on by itself, you are probably right about the button.

I went to a Samsung service center and they told me the motherboard had to be replaced.. I did some searching and found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2178484
I've come to the conclusion that it was indeed a bad emmc (Yes, I was using stock ROM).. Any thoughts?

Nope

If it indeed is a Bad EMC then it should be In Warranty Repair as Samsung does offer that. If you didn't have Insurance that is.

Thank you

Answered in the other thread. Just fyi, its best to only ask your question once, in one thread. It gets messy and confusing when different things are mentioned/attempted in different threads for the same issue.

STUCK
Well my s3 (us cellular r530u), has no boot but has a red led without the battery. Is there a debricking procedure? And if so..where can i find a debrick file.

There is for us. But you need to be in Sprints forums. Theres nothing for your device here, and I dont know what they have over there. Good luck though!

[Q] I think it's bricked?

So my phone running CM 10.1, turned off randomly. So I tried to reboot but kept getting stuck on the Samsung boot logo. I rebooted to CWM recovery mode, wiped cache and dalvik and rebooted which I thought would fix the problem somehow which it did. However, when it said "Android upgrading, optimizing apps", my phone lost battery (thought the phone charger was plugged in). When I plugged it in the outlet properly this time, I got through the battery charging logo. But when I tried turning it on afterwards, nothing. The phone doesn't respond when I tried to turn it on. Took the battery off, placed it back and when I plug it into the outlet, there is no more battery charging logo and I can no longer reboot. How can I fix this? Somehow, the phone might be trying to continue to turn on but is not responding when I try to actually turn it on. When I plug the charger, take off the battery, unplug and replug charger, the battery charging led lights up for 5 minutes (which is weird cause I disabled the indicator led when charging in the system settings). I allowed it to be plugged in to the charger overnight and when I checked this morning, nothing. No symptoms that it was charging; no heat on the phone. Is not being able to charge a symptom of a bricked phone. I have yet to try using another battery.
If you can't power on or get to DL mode or anything and none of the buttons respond it could be a hard brick

I checked at a Sprint store and the device they have couldn't make a reading off my battery meaning it was most likely dead. I'm gonna try with a new battery and hopefully my phone isn't actually bricked.
Best of luck sir

Ah, just my luck. A Sprint representative placed another battery on it (I didn't see it though) and told me that the phone still won't turn on and told me he can open and check the phone if I pay. So, I think it is hard bricked. :crying: How did I brick it? Ugh..I'm just dismayed on the information and data I lost. What are my options? I heard Mobiletechvideos.com does a jtag brick repair with an option for internal sd card recovery?

I had to get a JTAG when I flashed a wrong kernel. Although when I got it back I had lost nothing still had custom ROM and recovery and all my data and apps were there. If its hard bricked its because something happened to the bootloader

How can I know if I need a JTAG or my phone need an eMMC Chip Repair Replacement. What if my phone experienced a sudden death. If it's the latter, it's expensive as the website lists it for $150, almost the price of a new two-year contract phone.
Oh well, I'll send it in anyways for a jtag. Hopefully they can fix it.

Its kind if hard to say if this was a brick or not. Usually sudden death is out of the blue, as far as I know the only way to achieve a hard brick is flashing a bad or international zip file
What's 150$ though? The emmc or the jtag

I just experienced a similar problem as OP, and I didn't even flash a new ROM or international ROM. Since January, I've been using the ICS version of FreeGS3, stock kernel.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1748818
I haven't flashed any new ROM's since January 2013 and have not experienced any problems until now.
This morning, however, when I woke up, I discovered that my Sprint S3 was stuck on the "Samsung Galaxy S III" logo. I pulled the battery and powered up, and it got stuck on the same logo again. I repeated this process several times and the same thing happened. After looking at some XDA threads, I went into recovery and decided to wipe cache and dalvik to see if that fixed anything. Again, the phone booted up and got stuck on the "Samsung Galaxy S III" logo again.
However, when I tried to boot into recovery again, I wasn't able to do so. I tried several times without any luck. I decided to see if I could put the phone into download mode. I did, and it was successful. I didn't do anything just yet because I needed to research more fixes before seeing what needed to be done. I put the phone into download mode several times without doing anything, but then later, the phone itself wouldn't power on.
No matter what combination of buttons I pressed, the phone simply wouldn't power on. I even tried other batteries which I knew were fully charged. When I put the phone on the charger or plug it into my PC, no charging lights light up. However, when I pull the battery an plug the phone into my PC, the charging light lights up and it the PC seems to try to install drivers. However, despite the charging light lighting up with the battery pulled, but phone plugged into the PC, I still can't get the phone to power on at all and therefore can't get into recovery or download mode.
It's similar to the problem the person in this video is having where he uses a jig to get back into download mode.
http://youtu.be/FdrdWqaXUBE
I have a jig on the way, so hopefully that helps fix my problems, but I don't really understand how the phone got bricked in the first place; First it was soft bricked when it got stuck on the "Samsung Galaxy S III" logo, but I was still able to get into recovery and download mode. Then, it was hard bricked when it wouldn't even power on to get into recovery or download mode. Did it get hard bricked because I went into download mode too many times? What might have caused it to be soft bricked. The thread for my ROM is now closed, so I don't know where else to ask these questions. I'll update you as I try to fix this problem. Any other suggestions are welcome.
Your device is not bricked your device doesn't even have a software failure. What you are describing is SDS sudden death syndrome.
Your power button has failed. It's defective and the manufacturer knows it. It fails at the motherboard not the physical button itself. Since you where able to get into download mode I suggest you return the device to stock unrooted, do a triangle away function and take it to Sprint. They usually repair of exchange it for you.
Have a great day!

Hmm...I suggest you are talking about the other poster since I am not able to power it on at all (Recovery nor Download mode). I don't have insurance nor have warranty, I don't think Sprint would be able to fix it without me paying an incredibly huge amount. I was hoping that my data would be recovered but now that you mention the possibility of sudden death syndrome, there's no way I can recover the data if it is. A sudden death syndrome would require a replacement of the eMMC which is rather costly.
@bonsly16 My apologies yes my reply was to Lawyerman... But you do have an alternative option, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43724690 many have had success and in many cases everything was there for them.

[Q] Odd brick situation Tmobile SGH-T999 (Cant find exact answer)

Hey everybody,
I rooted my phone a couple weeks ago and one day it just pooped out. I researched a bunch on google etc and found some things to try but so far no solutions.
Model: SGH-T999 T-mobile s3 (Used CF-Auto-Root and Odin for rooting)
Problem: After the phone pooped out, I was unable to enter recovery mode. I could enter dl mode however it crashes at variable intervals. So I bought a jig figuring maybe that would help but it still crashes in dl about 5 seconds later. Any suggestions?
Everything that I have found on the internet has been were people can usually get it into dl mode and keep it there or they cant get there at all even with a jig. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
If you were running stock it's probably a hardware problem. If not what Rom are you on? What/when/how was your most recent flashes?
Have you tried kAsp3rd's brick fix in dev section?

It starts and then crashes. After awhile it might make it to the animation with the blue wave forming around the words samsung, but usually it crashes on the Samsung Galaxy SIII logo in the beginning. Also when I put it into download mode it crashes anywhere from 1-5 seconds after. When I try to get into recovery mode it crashes almost right away when the blue words are at the top left of the screen.
Also when I put the battery in it tries to boot on its own without me pressing power button, and sometimes it tries to reboot after it crashes and turns off without me pressing anything. Also after it crashes I usually cannot just press the power button to try and power it up again so I have to take the battery out and put it back in.
When I was doing the Kasperd brick fix I used the T999 debrick image. How do I know if I have a different variant of the T999. I saw that some people had T999v and T999N. What are those?
Look under the battery for your model. Sounds like a power button issue. All I can say is try fiddling with it a bit. May have to open to see if it is physically always in contact, or it could be a deeper issue on the board. Hard to say.

Ok I just see T999 on the label.
How can it be a hardware issue when I never dropped the phone or anything. I was just thinking it was because I rooted the phone because it happened about a week after I rooted it. It was working one minute and then a couple hours later when I took it out of my pocket it was off and I tried turning it on and all that stuff started happening. I will definitely check the power button though. Thanks for the help.
Also another piece of info to add. When I plug it in to charge both the battery charging symbol and red light will sometimes turn on and then it crashes/goes black similar to what happens when trying to power up the phone. Not sure if that helps at all. Thanks!
If my phone was hard bricked I wouldnt be able to turn it on at all correct? Im trying to figure out if I will need to get this thing jtagged or something in order to get it working again.

Physical damage is not a prerequisite of hardware failure. Ever have a hard drive go bad? Did you drop it first?

True, however I just find it odd that I rooted the phone and a week later it happened. That is why I am leading towards an issue involving that and not hardware damage.
If it was a problem with rooting, it would have gone south right away. Many people are having these button issues recently. And you don't have to drop it, like aerowinder said, but you do use the button right? Moving parts wear out. Hardware fails. That's really all there is to it. While I could be wrong in my diagnosis, I don't think that will prove to be the case here.

It does most certainly sound like a hardware issue in the power button. I read another thread very similar to this same thing on the T999.

I would recommend searching around for others who have had the same issue and seeing what their resolutions were. I've not seen many on here but google turned up quite a few.

Thanks guys! I found a good thread on here about the S3 sudden death thread. Im going to read up on that and see what I can do. It was just tough to find since I was thinking it was bricked but the descriptions for this power button sudden death thing sound spot on. SOLVED: HELP NEEDED!!! Note 2 wont turn on. BadgeProvider and Samsung has stopped!!!!

As the title reads my Note 2 will not turn on. It will not go into recovery mode. I have 5 batteries and none of them are working. Yesterday I got 2 weird messages that "BadgeProvider" and "Samsung" has stopped. The phone started acting weird by not letting me use anything but the notification bar. I couldn't even turn it off using the power button. I removed the battery and reinserted the battery a couple of times and still it didn't work only letting me use the notification bar. Finally it started working for some random reason and I restarted the phone and all was well.
I'm so use to having 5 batteries that I did not have the phone on the charger last night and it died. Now the phone will not turn on at all. Not into recovery mode. Not normal mode. It is totally unresponsive. Tried rapidly touching the contacts with the battery contact and nothing. What can I do to get my phone working????????????
Also to add to this, yesterday when I was taking the phone's battery out and in the phone would start booting by itself. Could this be a power button issue? I've only had the phone for about 10 months and never dropped it without the otterbox defender series on it.

From that statement above, having the otter box doesn't mean you'll be protected against drops. Yes it'll protect the phone but still suffered inside the device! I had a friend crack his screen on the corner, with an otter box on with one drop!
Now back to the phone:
Since you can get into recovery have you tried a factory data reset to see if that fixes your problem..

I plan to read all responses as soon as I can because I'm in dire need of help. The phone WILL NOT turn back on. The first day I had the problem it gave me the "BadgeProvider" has stopped working and also the "Samsung" has stopped working error messages. The only thing that was responsive was responsive was my notification bar. I could slide it down turn wifi on and off etc from there but when I hit the setting button on the notification bar it would not open up the settings immediately and there was maybe a 2 minute delay (I walked away from the phone and came back to it) and it would finally open it up but giving me the 2 error messages "BadgeProvider" and "Samsung" has stopped working. Read online that clearing the BadgeProvider data under "Application Manager->All->BadgeProvider" would fix this issue so thats what I did. Wallah it worked fine.....fell asleep without my phone on the charger and it died but I have 5 batteries so who cares. Woke up noticed the phone was dead then I swapped batteries (OEM Samsung battery). Tried to turn it on and it will not turn on. Tried putting it on the charger (even though it should be a freshly charged battery) and the red charging light will not even come on. Tried to boot into recovery mode and still unresponsive.
As of now I CANNOT boot into revovery mode, turn on the phone in any way, get the charging light to come on when plugged in (I have 5 other batteries plus an external battery charger so its definitely not truely dead battery wise), I cannot get the phone to do anything what so ever. Tried removing external storage from it, tried removing sim, tried 5 different fully charged batteries and nothing.
Anyone that can give me some insight on what the problem may be and a possible solution I would greatly appreciate it.

True, true.....Or, they post the same question in five forums....lol.
What do you guys think about using Odin? Can he get into the phone if it won't go to recovery? Can you install TWRP or CWM, they may automatically set the phone to restart in recovery mode? Just some thoughts....I am not a dev., just an avid user.
Something here might help as well. :

Keep us posted on what you try, and your status. Good luck.
Also if it helps any, I have had my phone restart by itself randomly way before rooting it. After rooting I still had the restarts just as I have always had (maybe once every 3 weeks). Rooting it gave me no errors at all and it has been working fine for months being rooted. Not sure if letting you guys know of the restarting issue is going to help anything but I'm telling you all I know to try to debug this issue.

So there is no power at all, not even a loop. I had a similar problem with a LePan tab, but when I plugged it into my laptop via USB, it would start.....Sorry. Sounds hardware....
Good luck

I did read the whole post, hence my reply. Towards the end of his post, he says that the phone won't turn on at all. Maybe you should read the whole post.

Thanks man. I'm thinking it's hardware too. Herd of motherboard problems early on with this phone that would cause it to randomly shut off and not come back on.
Has ANYONE had any experience with samsung repair centers???? Do they care if the device is rooted even if its a known hardware issue?
Thanks for any help

I've read a few people having that problem with the phone randomly turning off.
[Q] did you get the phone New or used? If its used you have a lot of people out there selling devices with problems that they couldn't fix! FYI
#2
Does it get recognized by the PC?
When you plug it in? If so then you should be able to try the Kies recovery!
If not then kies won't help..

I brought it directly from AT&T new. And nope. Tried pluggin it into the PC and not recognized. Tried Kies and Odin and neither had any affect. The phone is just completely unresponsive now.
Thinking about trying to take it to Samsung before AT&T so I can try to miss the deductible.
Remove the battery ...then plug the device in to USB connection with your PC...
Then attempt to boot the phone into download mode..
If successful ....then immediately push the rooted stock rom from Mr. Robinsons thread in the development section...
If no download mode exists while attempting boot with the battery removed ...then the likelihood of device damage is high...
This of course does not rule out the possibility of a stuck power button ...but that hardware failure generally presents a repeated and uncontrolled loop which in this case we are not seeing...
Odin mode failure generally means a defective or damaged Chipset...g

Ok since you want to take it in to Sammy. And you did state you got it New from the AT&T store. Then you can take it into one of the DSC. (Device support center)
Check HERE:
http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB91429&cv=820#fbid=CS_QLPeF54-
Hopefully there's one in your area. I have one like 10 mins away from me
Hopefully they can help you get back up and running. No charge either. It's a warranty center. Member no Rom talk in there.. LOL:sly:
But if they can't get it to turn on you'll be getting another the same day. Takes about a total of 15 minutes and you'll be on your way with your new toy!! Yay and good luck to you. Lety us know what you're outcome is!

Got a new phone. It was a painless process. Just walk in play dumb and talk as least as possible. They never asked a question about rooting. I'm guessing because I seemed like an idiot . Going to let it do all the updates it can then going to root it tomorrow using CFroot.
Thanks all for the info.
Anyone reading this in the future let me know if I can help in anyway.
Glad you got a new device ..and for the record ...I personally believe you had a bad device from day 1...
Normally I would frown on anyone taking back a device that has been modded ...but I can see no evidence in your case that indicates your doing anything that would break your chipset ...
And I know that others feel the same way ...
You tried your guts out ...and the device just didn't act properly from day 1...
Please place a "Solved" in the thread title if you don't mind ...
That way ...everyone knows the issue has been corrected ..
Many thanks ...and....
Happy flashing ....g

[Q] turns off in a few seconds wont boot or download/recovery NOT button issue!

Okay before i get bashed yes I have searched the threds and yes I found the issue but the solution did not apply to my case, So I do appoligize if this for any reason is not the right place and will be happy with any mod that feels necessary to move my thread
That being said, I came across a t-mobile galaxy S3 t-999 the phone is not rooted, has not had any physical damage and does not have water damage and no update was attempted, the occurrence was random with nothing being done, just shut off and wouldn't turn back on. The battery has been swapped with another S3 to confirm there is no battery issue. The cord has also been swapped.
Now the problem
The phone turns off after a couple seconds and does not boot
My initial thought was to first try a factory reset and if that didn't work to re-flash stock with odin.
Well recovery also turns on for 2 seconds and shuts right off.
Download mode? Yupp you got it same thing
cant reflash with odin because it won't stay in download mode
The only thing i seemed to find thats remotely close to this is a stuck power button and the solution seems to be slamming the phone on the table
However this is NOT the problem in my case
The slam method has been attempted as well as the remvoval of the power button, Plus after each time it shuts off It will NOT turn back on until I remove the battery which is when i get that glorious 2 seconds followed by it turning right off. Thats why i made a new post rather then posting this question there, but if I shouldn't have Im sorry The mod can remove it and i will be happy to repost it there.
If anyone can help me please do, because at this point my face looks like thank you.

I think you already know the answer. Seems to me that you've done everything possible. Were you on 4.1.2?
Can you call T-Mo or Samsung and Check Warranty Coverage on the IMEI ? They may ask for Serial Number instead.
Not actually my device

Yea thats what i was afraid of, I actually don't know the version it was on prior, to be honest this isn't my device I actually run a small time craigslist base business generally rooting peoples phones and installing roms and fixing softbricks, someone asked me if I can help them and i thought it would be a simple softbrick issue until I actually got a hold of the phone and saw this issue now i think its hardware problem but i thought id ask my good friends at xda before completely giving up

That sounds a little extreme TBH with you. I've only heard of people doing the oven trick for the flickering LCD fix, but I haven't paid too much attention lately so I could be wrong.
Please provide more info:
d850 rt? still on fulmics? can you manually boot into recovery(doubt it if you're blue screened but had to ask)? have you tried flashing a TOT or KDZ and going back to stock yet?

yes d850 and yes i am still on fulmics but according to numerous other threads on different forums, this isn't a software issue. I can't get into download mode at all as the phone shows no signs of life when the power button is pressed or when its plugged in
Board expired

It's time to move on.same happened to me a week ago.and I found the reason that my charger was at fault .the charger damaged one of the ics.it causes the board to draw a lot of current and causing severe heating issue within seconds.
So,better buy a new phone.

Welp...that doesn't sound good. One last question(i think you already answered, but double checking)- so with power off, plugging the usb cable into a pc & holding vol up does nothing at all?
I guess if you're in "last resort mode" the oven may be the way to go, but I have not done it myself so I can't help much there. Here's a post from someone who had success using the oven... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68235296&postcount=7
I'd be nervous and would do it as the absolute last resort, but you could be at the "what do I have to lose, so why not?" point by now. You may want to PM the poster(or anyone else who has had success) for more info if you need it & to see if it is a lasting fix or not.
Good luck! :fingers-crossed:

I also ventured for the oven.and within 2 seconds.my board was gone...oven trick is just a sarcasm.don't go for it.
You can extra life of 30 minutes by giving it a Sunbath for some time.
My bad - misquoted a poster.
I kind of forgot about this thread whoops
Well I have news for you guys, I got a used g3 from eBay and wanted my apps from my old phone back and you know what I did?
I stuck it into the oven. I **** you not, after 375 for 5 minutes it started working again and I was able to get my apps and data to an SD card. Its still working but I took the battery out of it to use with the replacement. Can't believe it worked tbh
