I've always used cwm on my devices. Currently using 5.5.0.2 non touch. Backups seem really slow to me. GSM gnex.
I was a long time CWM user, but tried out TWRP on the GNex and I like it MUCH better! Try it out and see for yourself.

i used to be an avid CWM user as well, but since i moved to TWRP on my TF201, TWRP has been the only recovery for me, Its absolutely amazing on the GNex
I've always liked CWM and have no intentions of moving to TWRP. CWM works really well, it's solid, reliable, and fast. There is no reason for me to switch.
I had a terrible experience with TWRP in it's early stages. Bent back to CWM and never tried again.
I was actually a twrp user for awhile. I used it on an HTC one s as well as my current gnex. I personally found cwm to be more stable in the the end because I had a few lockups with twtp that just soured my experience with it.

+1 I tried TWRP on another phone because it was included with the ROM I flashed, didn't like it. I could get used to it I'm sure, but I see no benefits over CWM, so I'll stay with what I'm used to that just works.

I have used cwm since my og droid days. However, on my gnex I switched to twrp. Cwm always gives me issues with the volume buttons on it. I would press the volume down button, and it would move the cursor 3 or 4 spots, making it very difficult to get on the correct option, especially find the one yes in the bunch of no options.
It also seemed to sometimes lock the power button, so when I pressed it to accept the reboot option, it would just turn the screen of and on.
Touch screen buttons are much easier to deal with on a touch screen device than using volume and power buttons.

Good to know, thanks!
The main reason I prefer twrp over cwm is the ability to name back ups to something other than a standard date code. My advice would be to try it for a couple of days, and see what you think, personally. We can all tout one, or the other. But, like everything else in android, it's a matter of preference.
Swyped from the land of unicorn porn
Twrp blows cwm out of the water - period. Even koush admitted cwm was past it's time which is why he started to rebuild it. Until something major changes w/ cwm, twrp and goo are where it's at right now...

Installed ROM Manger.
Installed Clockwork Recovery from Rom Manager as I wanted to install a new rom.
Now when I boot, no matter what combination I hold down, it goes to the Android System Recovery screen and in the background is the white triangle, yellow exclamation point and little android guy.
I can move between the three ofered choices but pressing the power button (I assume this is the OK button) does nothing.
Thoughts / help?
Does your computer recognize it? If it does you should try adb download and see if you can get into download mode

Just realized I posted the question in the wrong forum as well.
Computer makes a noise as though it knows it's connected, yet it doesn't show up and odin and kies don't find it either.
I think home button is select and power button is back, but I haven't used stock in a long time, so might be remembering incorrectly.
I suggest you don't use Rom Manager to install recovery. It doesn't work properly for this phone and could lead to non-recoverable problems.
Read this thread and you'll have references to everything you need to undo and start from scratch:

I came over from an Evo and believe me everything pointed to not use Rom Manager when I had my phone as well. I agree that if people took the time to read properly they would see that Rom Manager and a few other crazy things they do are not suggested. But they make sure to have time to post and read their threads when they screw up. Honestly with all the brick laying and blue light specials up in herrre. Do you really need to post your problem and how do you fix it...
His problem is one of 100 exactly the same in here and instead of searching and helping himself he did the same lazy thing that got him stuck in the first place. Then too lazy to find out how to work CWM. Quite sure he will be back again if he keeps up this route... @OP not trying to be an ass but just hate to see people who don't want to help themselves.
Sorry to hear that you've bricked OP. Hope you can get a replacement and get back into owning your phone.
Here's what I've done to avoid bricking since I am also somewhat new to the E4GT...
Read the forums on XDA.
Observed what others are doing that worked.
Didn't flash anything you are unsure of.
Became familiar with ODIN.
Stayed away from ROM manager.
Flashed using el29 rogue recovery only. (I've been successful with this so far, others say to use el26.)
Wipd cache/dalvik-cache/data/system.
Purchased mobile ODIN, $5 is better than the deductible to get a replacement.

I bricked but it was a bad recovery well not bad just messy team trolls recovery bricked me 2 weeks ago wiping Cache . But as always when u post questions like this here ur gonna hear it lol but searching helps.
Now if its hard bricked ud not even get to recovery at all just a blue light and a black screen that if is ur case unplug it cause it runs the battery super hot .
If not in that position than try power and volume down if it does not bring u to download mode to Odin another recovery if that don't work idk

Porting was needed for CWM recovery. Not ROM Manager. Support for ROM Manager comes from device devs, not koush. In the form of uploading vetted software, that doesn't corrupt. It is a universal starting point, not a fully functional product.
But regardless, I wasn't even talking about it's support. I was saying people other than ones with HTC devices can get into the habit of using ROM Manager.

Doesn't matter the recovery is in the kernel and rom manager will not work on this phone ....there is no separate recovery partition and ROM manager won't flash the recovery right on here since it's part of the kernel partition.koush doesn't really care he made it to temporarily flash a recovery like touch that might work if not for ics kernels... Better or worse depends on what you want I guess.
I use CWM 5.5.0.2 because it is extremely stable, and it is NON-touch. The touch-enabled CWM is NOT stable.
For me, having a touch-enabled recovery is silly -- I am in recovery to fix something or flash something, and I don't need a touch interface where I can accidentally touch the screen and it will do something I don't want. And I certainly do not want themes on my recovery. Hell, I don't even use themes on my ROMs...
From my point of view, the only benefits to using TWRP is the ability to decrypt data while in recovery (although I don't use encryption, so...) and compression. I can't comment on TWRP stability, as I have not used it long enough.

I did some research and TWRP looked good. I installed TWRP yesterday. I've made a backup and its very quick. I did not restore yet. I too have not had enough seat time to comment on reliability. .
I'm still confused whether or not I have to or should remove CWM apps or leave them installed? I paid for CWM touch. No biggie I spend more for a coffee at Starbucks.
Is it OK to leave both installed and to go back and forth between the two recoveries if needed? Is anyone keeping both available?
I understand the backups are not interchangeable.

Yes I would leave both back ups installed because you never know if twrp will mess up or clwmod but I highly doubt clwmod will. They are not interchangeable but clwmod can be flashed through rom manager in case your twrp fails and your not near your PC. I wouldn't use rom manager for nothing else but to flash clwmod its very unstable.

I have problems making decisions when I don't have enough info or I'm not satisfied with the info I have read. I have scoured google and I have read as much as I can on the differences but there's not much on which is better. My last question is if I choose to go back to clockwmod and if I do it won't be touch is it better to flash a zip or can I count on rom manager to flash it because I won't use it to do anything else only because im a firm believer in if you can't flash manually then you shouldn't be flashing. Thanks in advance

Thought I'd mention, I'm no longer working on this recovery (if you couldn't tell ). The base is pretty dated now and beyond my ability to bring to new devices. TWRP is an awesome recovery, so I'd look for that on your new phones and tablets. Zip queues are sweet and while there is no auto-reboot it's not that big of a deal since it backs ups and restores so fast. You can check them out here or in your respective device forum. I really appreciate everyone who liked this recovery. I went from bugging drellisdee to learning how to make it on my own and that was a really great experience.
Right now, I'm trying to pitch in on ParanoidAndroid for the Nexus 7 when possible and hope to upgrade my phone soon (waiting for my contract to expire late November and for what Google has to say on 10/29). Thanks again everybody!

I'm sticking with what i know works,i like the TWRP touch, but Smelkus has been good to me,why fix something that isnt broken.
I prefer to use Smelkus. As far as TWRP goes, my only *true* issue is the fact that it takes like a minute for my phone to load TWRP when I boot into recovery. When I boot into Smelkus, it takes no more than 10 secs. Maybe it's just my phone, but I know that I'm not willing to wait that long for my recovery to load.

Smelkus is the best, takes everything from amon RA and adds to it. I just can't trust a touch recovery that says "no bricks" in the open. And with smelkus if the capacitive buttons fail you can still use the volume rockers and power button to select things.

For me, CWM is ok, but it lacks the spice of TWRP. On the other hand, TWRP is like a cheap ass Android phone. It works, but completely ruins the experience. This is like CWM on steroids. If you read the OP it says 99% of it is open, just not the touch code like CWM. I feel that this is what I have personally been missing in a recovery.

I don't quite understand what the "spice of TWRP" and the "experience" of Android in a recovery are. To me, the two recoveries do the same thing; the only reason I use TWRP is that it is touch, and I have had bad experiences with broken buttons from overuse. So I need to agree with pirateghost; I don't see the appeal.

Compared to non touch ? Not really, I've started using it because I wanted to save the button wear, but since 4.1.2 I'm not seeing the recovery much anyway (using stock Google image). I tried TWRP, but went back quickly, since I was more familiar with CWM and didn't want to waste time relearning/trying something that I wasn't aware of how it all works when needed.
As for regarding recovery "features" some would probably want working radio in it and use it as a phone ...

TWRP and Story time
I'm currently using TWRP with no issues, and never had any, starting way back on the OG Evo.
I do remember installing clockwork on the old school T-Mobile G1 (Dream) and I didn't have any issues. Koush spearheaded the recovery project for us, he will always have that title of being the 'first' with his clockworkmod's. (a tip of the hat to Koush)
Reminds me a little of this story I learned a while back. I heard it was true too...
The importance of a beginning in anything isn't always about that first product or creation in the project. The importance is whether the original design and goal is met at the end and/or in the end product. I.E. Adam.
He was the first to be created of humanity but the original purpose for his creation did not meet all of the requirements of his Creator. Instead of scrapping the original product and starting anew, there was a plan to restore and rectify on the original project, or as i like to call it, the original "storyline".
The similarity of this story to the OP takes a turn here. Where as Koush didn't fully rectify his original product (Clockworkmod) and make a better one, the Creator of humanity did indeed follow up on His promise to begin in the restoration of the original design of His story: the "Second Adam".
One was born from the dust of the earth (ie 'first' Adam; the other birthed from the Spirit of God in Heaven ('Second' Adam).
The first Adam was born perfect but ultimately failed in its original design and purpose. But alas, One had come, the Second Adam, who did not fall or fail, but came, conquered ,and was victorious in all that man was suppose to represent and so so much more...
I use cwm just because I like it better, I've had no issues so far with it. Once 4ext is available I'll be using that, best I've used to date.

Truthfully I was CWM all day every phone no matter what.
I wouldn't even give TWRP a chance, once I did though, I never looked back, haven't been back on CWM since either.
I do have a gripe with a menu set up. Nothing major and enough for me to change. I highly suggest TWRP.
I like TWRP more. Better UI, navigation and features. That said, I use CWM. After experiencing bugs and instability with TWRP on the S4, I returned to the recovery that has never failed me, CWM.

I use TWRP and have no complaints. Never did with CWM either. The winner for me is TWRP though, because I like being able to add multiple zip files to flash at once instead of flashing them one at-a-time with CWM, not a big deal but saves some time.
I would love to see 4ext make a comeback. Best recovery ever.

I just actually received an email from max about 4ext for the One. In short - the framework of his recovery needs an overhall to work with the larger resolutions, multi-cores, etc. He has a lot of work ahead of him so if he does try to revamp it for the One it will be some time. But I would switch from TWRP to 4ext in a heartbeat...handsdown the best.

Same here. I love twrp, but pales so hard in comparison with 4ext

Almost anyone in that case lol
I used cwm with the original droid and it worked fine but when newer phones came out I noticed issues like on my dinc and bolt I had backups that was corrupted and I wasn't happy and moved to twrp and never had an issue since. I did move to 4ext with the bolt and that must say was the best over all. I miss 4ext when I got rid of the bolt but hope it comes to the one soon. It was so user friendly.
I've used CWM on my HP tablet, installed on a few other phones. Honestly, I've never given TWRP a chance. Is there anything I'm missing by not using it. I guess I'm just more used to the look and feel of CWM
