Simple port request - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Ok guys, before I get flamed for not doing it myself I gotta say that my build system is down ATM. This is a simple thing to do, I just don't have the resources to do it. If anyone would be willing to port this for Toro, that would be AWESOME. It's a new recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2201860
Like I said, I would do it if my computer wasn't down right now. Thanks for anyone willing to do this.

Well where to start?
Its just another recovery since the unique features of it will not be open sourced by the dev.
What features of it intrigue you the most? I mean I spend all of ten minutes a week in recovery. I have no need for anything else in recovery other than what I currently have.

For me, CWM is ok, but it lacks the spice of TWRP. On the other hand, TWRP is like a cheap ass Android phone. It works, but completely ruins the experience. This is like CWM on steroids. If you read the OP it says 99% of it is open, just not the touch code like CWM. I feel that this is what I have personally been missing in a recovery.

I don't quite understand what the "spice of TWRP" and the "experience" of Android in a recovery are. To me, the two recoveries do the same thing; the only reason I use TWRP is that it is touch, and I have had bad experiences with broken buttons from overuse. So I need to agree with pirateghost; I don't see the appeal.

Missing Features from github source:
- all gui options, include touch code
- name the backup folder with current ROM name
- custom zip install menu (Free Browse Mode + custom startup folder)
- Create Update.zip from current ROM or from pre-existing backups
- misc nandroid settings menu (but /preload is included by default and I added option to toggle compression under backup format menu)
Please, do not ask for touch source, I will never share it, release it public or make it commercial...

Yeah I do, but I never got around to trying it since TWRP works anyway. Like I said, my recovery doesn't really matter to me as long as it works. Does it have any special advantages?

Got my build system up and running finally. Working on syncing some source now then I'll get this going probably tomorrow or so. If anyone is interested just let me know and I'll get it posted in the dev section

Compared to non touch ? Not really, I've started using it because I wanted to save the button wear, but since 4.1.2 I'm not seeing the recovery much anyway (using stock Google image). I tried TWRP, but went back quickly, since I was more familiar with CWM and didn't want to waste time relearning/trying something that I wasn't aware of how it all works when needed.
As for regarding recovery "features" some would probably want working radio in it and use it as a phone ...

Any word on what? At this time the only useful aspect of this is the standard recovery features we already have with 2 other recoveries. Since he won't open source the only bits that make it unique it seems like a waste of time.

Looks like Phil just posted it in the Toro section! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2281571

TWRP to me is pretty horrible. CWM is simple and it works. Ive used it from the start and never had any problems. also the latest version of CWM supports Toro (obviously) and is also touch. Not sure why the OP wants this one to be honest.

Then you get no custom lock screen.
I'm in the same boat you are. I rooted my phone, but at least for the time being, I don't want to use a custom ROM. With that choice comes sacrifices. I'll likely never get a % battery mod or a custom lock screen. Life is full of choices.

then you give up the custom lockscreen without using a third party app.
im trying to root my optimus v but i just made an account and can't post in the thread i want because i need 10 posts.
for me stability of my phone is very important and custom rom doesn't really give me that feeling just yet, there is always something issues going on...
back in the days the reason why i went w/ cm7 vs stock rom is because it was cleaner, now that I have ICS its pretty clean as it comes, developer puts in his own tweaks what he feels is important (may not be important to me) and with that comes some unstable/untested code which i'm not ready to do beta testing
so i'm fine w/ stock rom and i'm loving it, of course someone may not think this way and want to go w/ cm9 nightly or some other custom rom its up to this person (who am I to tell otherwise)
i just wanted to know if maybe i missed something and it can be done with stock rom, but apparently thats not the case (or at least doesn't seems so)
I think you might want to try out one of the custom roms first. I thought that too. But these roms seem to be a whole different level of professionally coded compared to the cm7 days. Aokp to start with, then expand if necessary to paradigm etc. I think you'll be surprised, you're getting stock stability with extras.

[Q] TWRP vs CWM

I've only ever used CWM before. What exactly is TWRP and how is it better? I did hear that the new version can handle encrypted phones which sounds important to me. I use AOKP with a CMPlus kernel. Thanks

Ive had issues with bad restores on TWRP as well as a few others I know where force closes would randomly start happening I don't see any difference other than themeing which is nice but reliability > customization.

Better or worse depends on what you want I guess.
I use CWM 5.5.0.2 because it is extremely stable, and it is NON-touch. The touch-enabled CWM is NOT stable.
For me, having a touch-enabled recovery is silly -- I am in recovery to fix something or flash something, and I don't need a touch interface where I can accidentally touch the screen and it will do something I don't want. And I certainly do not want themes on my recovery. Hell, I don't even use themes on my ROMs...
From my point of view, the only benefits to using TWRP is the ability to decrypt data while in recovery (although I don't use encryption, so...) and compression. I can't comment on TWRP stability, as I have not used it long enough.

I did some research and TWRP looked good. I installed TWRP yesterday. I've made a backup and its very quick. I did not restore yet. I too have not had enough seat time to comment on reliability. .
I'm still confused whether or not I have to or should remove CWM apps or leave them installed? I paid for CWM touch. No biggie I spend more for a coffee at Starbucks.
Is it OK to leave both installed and to go back and forth between the two recoveries if needed? Is anyone keeping both available?
I understand the backups are not interchangeable.

Yes I would leave both back ups installed because you never know if twrp will mess up or clwmod but I highly doubt clwmod will. They are not interchangeable but clwmod can be flashed through rom manager in case your twrp fails and your not near your PC. I wouldn't use rom manager for nothing else but to flash clwmod its very unstable.

This is what I want to know and I'm hoping for a very experienced xda member to help me make my decision. I have problems making decisions when I don't have enough info or I'm not satisfied with the info I have read. I have scoured google and I have read as much as I can on the differences but there's not much on which is better. My last question is if I choose to go back to clockwmod and if I do it won't be touch is it better to flash a zip or can I count on rom manager to flash it because I won't use it to do anything else only because im a firm believer in if you can't flash manually then you shouldn't be flashing. Thanks in advance

Click Menu > Manual Flash Override. Then ROM Manager will acknowledge your currently installed recovery. However, if you're using TWRP, don't use ROM Manager! Enjoy!

UtkarshGupta:
Ya'. I know that the bugginess and lack of S-Pen support in CM 10.1 pre-release nightlies can be a bit trying. However, once a stable build of CM 10.1 is out, I think you'll be able to overlook the lack of S-Pen support and truly enjoy it. In the past, I've always been able to. Custom ROMs are almost always a matter of preference and opinion. However, when it comes to modified "stock" ROMs versus AOSP-based ROMs, the AOSP-based ROMs are almost always better. And that's not a statement of opinion; that's a statement of fact. AOSP-based ROMs are almost always cleaner, smoother, faster, and once finalized, more stable.
So now that you have ROM Manager working with your preferred custom recovery, I suggest you play around and try out some modifications, kernels, ROMs, etc.... and once a stable build of CM 10.1 is out, give it a second try. I think you'll find it more than adequate for daily use, and quite appealing for root and power use.
I hope my post has been helpful and I wish you the best of luck in modifying your device. Always remember to backup your EFS and do a Nandroid backup before any modifications, tweaks, or kernel/ROM flashing. Take care and have a good one! Thank you!

Yeah. I hear ya'. If the S-Pen was actually one of the major selling points that lured you into buying the Note, and if you use the advanced S-Pen features regularly, then I guess there really isn't any way to overlook it. I love the S-Pen. However, I find that I don't miss it's advanced features quite so much when I've got a stable, smooth, and blazing fast AOSP ROM on my device. However, as you appear to be somewhat more dependant on the S-Pen's advanced features than me, it really wouldn't make sense for you to give all that up just for an AOSP ROM. However, on that note, there are some really well put together modified "stock" ROMs available in the regular development forum. They all contain full S-Pen support. One of those may be more to your liking if you're not inclined to stay completely stock. Just a suggestion. Anyway, I hope you find a ROM that's a good fit for you. I know it can be difficult; so... good luck!

Ubuntu for Android Custom ROM for Galaxy Nexus

*****Moderators: please move this over to a different Galaxy Nexus ROM dev area should it apply, but please leave a link to it under this Sub-forum.
I have created what is probably the first custom Android ROM that includes the files for Ubuntu internally, alongside the existing Android architecture. While this is not really a polished release, it has the ability to crash the phone, and requires some tweaking by devs and downloaders. However, for Galaxy Nexus owners (toro for now, soon to be other GNex devices also) this ROM (Rev 2) should boot up after removing one internal zip file. Go ahead to https://sites.google...site/andrevroot for the link about the project, and/or the bottom of this post for
Some things to note:
Comment back what you think about this project, and ROM.
Please keep all comments polite and on topic.
Donate, via bitcoin if you like, as it helps support us, and help create better, more advanced ROMs.
Please look through the whole site
Don't try this ROM if you are new to custom ROMs, try Cyanogenmod ROMs first so you know what you are doing.
I take no responsibility for screwing up your device in any way.
This version is heavily based upon CM10, to the point where it should even say the General CM10 stuff under Settings>About Device. Please do not beat me up over this, it is just because I wanted to get a simple pre-release out there.
This is licensed, please read the License agreement at the footer of my site, you are bound to its terms. Its Creative Commons, but still used.
Thank You for your time, have a nice day.
Above all, do not try to update the CM firmware, as you will lose the ubuntu files contained within!!!!!!

EDIT: It seems that he updated the link as I was typing my post. The link to revision 2 is no longer there, and the first revision is hosted on a different site. I'm going to download it and flash it and see if I have any luck.
EDIT2: No dice Jim Rice

Holy cow, dude this was awesome. I mean... me and this thing clicked instantly. As soon as it booted within 5-10 seconds I got through the lockscreen and then just started dozing through all the apps and swiping. It is a bit slow, not in particular though, probably as slow as Miui. This is just a dev preview, imagine the real thing and I didn't lose to much battery life within the span of 20 minutes. I wanted to keep this on my phone just to test but I couldn't. I'm just waiting for the real thing :victory:

So you tried out the ROM, how well did it work for you? Did you like it, what do you want to see changed? I am trying right now to put together a hacked SlimBean version, which is much faster and better to use. Did the Ubuntu side work?

Gummy would probably be the most stable you will find so far.
Not a lot? There's 5 if you include the 2 OSs from OPPO. But yeah running Gummy and no problems, haven't had the restarts some people are posting. Gps worked great for me, the newest nightly fixed my lack of auto brightness and screen rotation. It is slightly sluggish for the first minute or so after boot but fine after that. Pick one and enjoy the experiment and let us know how it works for you
Tapped out on my beastly OPPO Find 7a
I also had no major problems with COS 2.0b either so what do I know. I just dont like a heavily themed/overlay Android OS.
Color OS is good as is Gummy as they said. But just make a Nandroid backup with TWRP or CWM and you can easily go back if you don't like what you've flashed.

You shouldn't be using ROM Manager, it's notorious for bricking/screwing up devices.

It's been a source of issues on every device I've ever owned.
Koush is notorious for not doing anything to improve his stuff as long as the money keeps rolling in. The infamous "wipe three times" myth originates from him ignoring bugreports of CWM failing to reliably wipe on an older device for months. During the Samsung Galaxy S2 "Superbrick" fiasco, he was the first person to release dangerous recoveries and the last one to release "safe" ones - ignoring reports of CWM Touch bricking devices so badly that not even JTAG could bring them back for MONTHS. I had to argue with him for 30 minutes to turn on EMMC wipe suppression and rerelease recoveries after it had been integrated into CM's own local builds for 2-3 months. During most of that argument, he consistently blamed users for the failure and absolved himself of any responsibility.
Now the typical "your warranty is void, we are not responsible for any issues" claim issued by many custom firmware projects including CM is there to handle transient ****ups. Sometimes you miss something and it doesn't become obvious there's a problem until hundreds or thousands of people start flashing a release. But for Koush, he belives it is consistently his right to ignore bug reports for extended lengths of time, even when those reports are of hardbricks.

Which one what? Recovery or ROM? As entropy suggests TWRP is the best recovery and as I and others have stated right above gummy is probably the most stable ROM.
