There are many brilliant Sense ROMs that have one HUGE drawback:
when you get an incoming call and the phone is in your pocket/backpack, the screen turns on (while in pocket). Then when you pull it out, you either accidentally hang up or maybe answer the call. Or maybe the phone will start doing all sorts of things while in pocket/backpack.
A solution by the androidforums user copas2 that works PERFECT:
Proximity Service:
http://code.google.com/p/proximitytoolextension/downloads/list
Download, install and check the "Service running" checkbox so all the checkboxes are checked. -That's it. In the notification bar you will see when the service is on, the icon will turn red.
This tool does a lot more stuff (regarding the proximity problems), for example when using Bluetooth headset etc etc...
On the download list, there's also a flashable zip to disable power button wake. Also VERY convenient, but you must have trackpad to wake or some other similar thing in order to wake the phone. I use it because when I put the phone in the pocket, I sometimes accidentally turn it on...
Before I HAD to switch to a different rom (MIUI XJ) in order not to have such annoying problems that many (fastest) sense roms have (Coolexe, AnDroid....), now I can use them again!
Hope this helps others! And a BIG thanks to copas2 for this!!!

Yes, it's a bug that forces you to change rom. So freaking annoying.
Thanks god for copas2.

Bump.
Wow, I didn't know about this thread, I've just spotted it, thanks
I uploaded a "newer" version which doesn't have the claimed problems anymore.
Now if you choose that the ongoing notification should be disabled (meaning that no icon will be shown in the notification bar), there won't be any but you have to count with Android's handling of services. If there's no ongoing notification (so called "foreground service"), the service can be kicked out by Android when getting very low on RAM.
You can always download new versions here, althought I doubt that there will be any more. But you know: never say "never"

Thanks, copas2. And know, without your excellent software, I (and probably many more) would not want to use any sense roms (the screen turning on in pocekt is just unbearable).
Thanks again, you've really made a great contribution!!!

Well, just because of that you could also use a Sense 3.x ROM (just as I do).
The most annoying part is when you're on headset and get an event or make/receive a call and the device stays on or even unlocked in your pocket after that. If it's faced towards your leg, it receives unwanted touches and is able to dismiss an event, a call or even initiate one.

Exactly. I'm just not a big fan of Sense 3.x ROMs, becaouse I find them laggy and not very good in multitasking. My ROM has Sense 1.9 and I find it perfect for the Desire... But, I have also had sense 3.x ROMs before and they were great, I just wanted more speed and better multitasking, which I use a lot.

I know what you mean. The truth is that a 1.9 Sense has much more free RAM than a 3.x, this is why your apps you're using can always remain in memory which makes the device more usable. I'm suffering that, it's true. What I'd really-really like to have is a 1.9 or 2.1 ODEXED ROM on a data++ partition structure. I was willing to do that (you can manage it by making symlinks for less recently used Sense bloatware packages to point them towards the SD-card) but I won't do it because I'm switching the ONE S. I don't own a ONE S yet but I don't really like it already. It has a low resolution facing camera, AMOLED display (unusable in direct sunlight) and a brick-like size. Battery is irreplaceable, no SD-card (16G data partition size only) and the stand-by button is unreachable it should've been placed to the middle because now you'd need one more finger between your thumb and your ponting finger. Albeit of all these drawbacks I need that big screen, the dual core. I think I'm gonna get used to it. The proximity extension will constantly be used of course.

If I had to buy a new phone right now, it would most certainly be the same one: ONE S! The X is way too big for me and the S looks better imho. But, since my Desire still works, I really have no real need to upgrade just yet. Plus, I have all these accessories, without which, the new phone would really be lacking in function:
1) Desktop dock with external battery charger + one spare battery
I have it beside my bed. At night, my desire functions as a night clock and I have a charged spare battery available all the time!
2) The original HTC Desire car dock
The best car dock I have ever seen in person.
See what I mean? The next phone sould really be a BIG upgrade to make me want to switch...
Honestly I hate that the Desire has so low amount of RAM and disk (NAND) space. And because one core is definitely not enough, it's time to move. Well, not really but ICS will never run on Desire. I know that the devs/modders are trying. But they don't produce a stable ROM - these are good for playing around but you can never expect them to be constantly working. I own my Desire for more than 2 years and I also tried some ROMs

[ROM][GPL] 2010-08-13 FroydVillain 1.2.0 "The Ultimate Parting Gift" CAMERA BROKEN
CAMERA IS BROKEN. WE KNOW. I'M WORKING ON IT.
FroydVillain 1.2.0 "The Ultimate Parting Gift" INFO & Release Notes:
Well there I was, about 28 hours ago fooling around with my local Android source tree, taking a break from kernel development. Then a few interesting things, 16 builds and 14 hours later it turns out something that would make for a great...no...superbly fantastic FroydVillain 1.2 appeared.
So here we are. Which is better to be honest, TeamVillain now aren't stuck in the middle of a release and the wonderful Villain community aren't wondering when the hell the next version will come along.
Well folks, even if you're still wondering what's to come after 1.2, you'll have plenty of time to wonder about it because this baby, is going to take some beating.
First, the usual nonsense, please read it etc etc to make sure your phone doesn't blow up, kick the wife or run away with the dog:
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Since this is likely to be my last post for a while save for just hanging out in the community, can I just stomp on this nonsense here. You don't need multiple reboots. Once you've installed everything you need, give the phone a kick to clear out garbage and set dalvik straight and you're done.
However for the nostalgic, do it anyway:
REMEMBER
Spoiler
the ROM will only be at peak performance after it's been rebooted a couple of times, and when you've opened your apps once prior.
adb install won't work on this ROM, until you tick "Unknown Sources" in the Menu > Settings > Applications menu.
This appears to be a new security feature. Similarly, apps pushed to /data/app won't work either. You might not notice the issue, but the app does not get any of its permissions it should have, meaning that it is probably useless, and might FC constantly or whatever. So remember to tick the Unknown Sources box
VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
When you install this ROM, DO NOT USE GOOGLE BACKUP OR RESTORE. It really slows the ROM down, like all Froyo ROMs, and it uses loads of battery even when you think you're not doing anything. So it's not cool. So turn it off in the setup wizard
Seriously. I cannot state this enough. Google Backup service right now is like sticking diesel fuel into a Ferrari. It's slow, eats CPU, eats memory, eats battery and uses your data connection whenever it damn well pleases. Poor show by Google, let them know they can and should do better by disabling this immediately. Or who knows what might happen to your pets and loved ones.
This ROM does NOT come with the optimal kernel installed. It comes with a safe one. You NEED to read the section "kernels" below for more information about these, and which to choose Then, once installed, open the app "CPUSpeed" and set up your CPU speeds. This ROM uses the interactive governor, which gives much better battery than other governors... So, set interactive as the main governor, then set your minimum and maximum. Then repeat this for sleep mode. If you have a 352MHz base kernel, set both the max and min sleep speeds to be 352 MHz
Yes, you have a plethora of kernels to choose from. Choose one that best matches the setcpu settings you used with those old dreary kernels. If you couldn't clock under 352MHz before because you possess a HTC Friday evening at the factory job, pick a kernel with a 352MHz base. Use your common sense for CPUSpeed/SetCPU sleep settings, clamp the top sleep speed under the top kernel speed.
So... What's changed since 1.1.9?
Well working camera is old news now so yeah, camera worked then, still works now, woohoo! (Thanks Cyanogen and co) EDIT: WOOPS! Famous last words!
ROM is significantly faster to boot than before (usable before radio signal is even established)
Oh yes. Oh yes oh yes. This is just the tip of the iceberg for the speed improvements in this ROM. All those other release notes you read about optimised this and experimental that, forget it. I guarantee you there is not a single other 2.2 based ROM for the Hero built the way this one was built. Sound big headed? Yep. But it is totally warranted. Use it and see for yourself. Even on the default 614MHz kernel, check out how quickly the setup wizard becomes responsive once it appears, unlike times of yore when it was time to go and have a wank and make a coffee when setup wizard appeared, for fear of a swamp of FC/Wait messages.
Updated google apps
Apparently Google tried to rain on my parade by releasing a new apps package today. So I included it. Thanks Google! (Also thanks to Perfinion for letting me be lazy and grab them from his server).
Trackbell LED better
I haven't got around to chatting with Lox about this yet, but I don't like how the proprietary liblights works with 2.2. It only lights up the battery light, it stays on and flickers when notifying instead of straight blinking and it does a weird thing when you boot up where if you disconnect USB after boot, it stays red until you reconnect again.
So I built some drivers that use the Jogball for notifications and the LED sticks to what the LED does best: *****ing when your battery is low.
We of course had various fixes along the way to 1.1.9 that are rolled into this. No weird ass menus that I forgot to trash because I was likely high on caffeine at some ungodly hour and not paying attention. The time machine bug in the kernel was fixed, video playback was fixed too.
Oh, someone please see if WMA/WMV works. The libraries are there, but I don't have any of those crappy files. While you're at it, see if Meridian picks up the xvid decoder I built. It probably won't, but it's worth a try.
Gallery3D is in a state of flux and will continue to be so/change frequently whenever the mood takes me to bash it in the face with some good old "WHY WON'T YOU WORK YOU STUPID SOFTWARE" treatment. I believe the included version rotates okish, but occasionally loses thumbnails. If you lose thumbnails then open a picture, hit the zoom control to fix the whacked out diagonal zoom effect it ends up with. Oh, I left some debug code in that effectively hits "Back" whenever you rotate. Too bad, deal with it until I get around to releasing another, it's no worse than the original crappy 2.2 Gallery anyway
Oh, Alankila gave CPUSpeed a good kick in the nuts and the included version works much much better than the one we inflicted upon you in 1.1.9. We're sorry about that, the beatings were administered soundly and Alankila offers up this latest version as an apology. It was that or his thumbs. We felt CPUSpeed.apk was more useful. I mean who needs more than two thumbs? A hitchhiking octopus I suppose, but I digress...
What else? Oh yeah. It's fast. Seriously fast. Give it some work to do and behold as it eats it up as if it thinks it's a Nexus or something. Don't believe me? I wouldn't either (all tests run on Interactive CPUFreq Governor). Did I mention it's fast? It's slick and responsive too. I am DARING every guy who can't resist flashing, benching and posting about ROMs to try this baby for a spin. Spin it with the default kernel too, before you pick your flavour.
The following screenshots were taken at either 729MHz or 691MHz:

B-b-but, 28.8fps in Neocore? That's terrible! Well, not with sound on at 691MHz it isn't. We did get a 29.2fps out of it, but then a guy appeared from the future and demanded I not post it as I was making the Nexus Two look bad. Good news though eh?
729MHz with sound off. I'm sure some kernel improvements can push that further, but still, not bad considering we weren't on the performance governor.
From 1.1.9
Blah blah you know what changed in 1.1.9, go read the 1.1.9 changelog if you're that interested.
So... How do I get it?
A full wipe is MANDATORY for this ROM, regardless of what you're upgrading from
First, install this file : http://www.villainrom.co.uk/releases/FroydVillain1.2.0/download.php

Then... pick a kernel, based on the speeds you want. Your hero must be capable of the speeds you select. A safe kernel is included, which isn't the fastest in the world, but should work for everyone.

Due to popular demand and because I'm such a nice, sweet and sugary guy, I caved and made you a 652MHz version. For the people wanting 710MHz, use the ROM first, then decide. I think you'll find you'd rather keep the battery power.
Naturally the sources for these kernels are available as per the GPL requirement either at my github repository (search for Ninpo) or in Lox's kernel-hero repo for Cyanogenmod (open source collaboration is a wonderful thing).
Credits:
Cyanogen for base (really does allow me to be lazy with device trees) and their Spareparts. Alankila for his work on CPUSpeed and DSPManager.
Me, of course, for being awesome and as a final ROM release for some time to leave my warm yet loving bosom, I have to say the combination of the kernel and this build is quite possibly my best work yet. Never let it be said I bow out on a low note and don't give the community who have fed my ego and spurred me on since May what they need, deserve and hunger: ME on their phones.
As usual, disclaimers, don't come crying to me if your phone blows up. There is a chance that the erm...persuasive nature in which I made this build may cause you a hiccup or two. Don't whine. Let the Villain team know and they can work on it. I'll be on hand to assist them with getting bug fixes out and making sure they're in good stead to keep releasing good ROMs for the future, or at least good enough that you don't miss me -too- much.
I am of course kidding with the self big upping here (the ROM is damn cool though kids, check it out), Villain is a great team, they did just fine before I came along and they'll continue to serve their community well with me on the sidelines while I hack away at bits of kernel code like a hermit.
So, enjoy. I hope this gives you guys as much fun and pleasure using as it did for me when I saw it come alive. Just don't be scared if it starts calling you Dave.

great work, downloading and flashing this asap.

OK, you've convinced me.

Sorry folks. Please enjoy the rest of the ROM, I am working on a fix right this second.
GAH!

the camera issue reminds me of the cronos beta build he was working on but didn't release last night - he built some kind of really fast version also but it borked the camera and had a stability issue, although it never made it to the public.
I'm still setting this new froyd up to actually get it to a point where I can really use it and find out how well it runs. hopefully by the time I get it where I want it (which does take a long time, hours it seems always for me with froyd, just something different about how it configures things on my phone for reasons I can get into sometime if anyone cares, but there's logic behind it...).... anyway hopefully by then a camera fix patch will exist
will be interesting to see!
Right, it's past 3am and this is all blurring into itself. Gonna grab some Zs and get it fixed later.
Apologies again...hope it doesn't take too much joy out of the performance. I'll track it down, promise.
EDIT: Fix identified, it needs a rebuild, BUT, all the performance enhancements look as though they will survive the fix, so, yay!
I'll get some sleep now and get this out asap in the morning. Please feel free to leave feedback on current build.

USB tether doesn't seem to be working correctly.
when i tick the checkbox it connects correctly. when i untick it, it will show as "network cable unplugged" on PC side but the network interface will stay. phone will stuck on tether mode and won't return to ADB mode. it stays that way even after unplug/replug USB until reboot.
My mom has a HTC Desire and after using the phone for 7 months, she still doesn't know how to use her phone very well. Android is simply too advanced for her. So I come here asking, is there a ROM out there that is simple and easy to use? iPhone and iOS are very easy to use and everything is pretty straight forward. If there is no simple and easy to use ROM, what ROM do you guys suggest I install on her Desire? There are way too many ROMs for the HTC Desire compared to Samsung Captivate.

I personally don't see what's so complicated about Android, but on the off chance that Sense is confusing her, you might want to try an AOSP rom or CM. The Sense 2.1 / 3.0 ROMs add more features and so probably won't help your situation
There is nothing complicated about Android at all, especially when you have Sense. Sense makes it a lot easier anyway. Maybe try another Sense rom but that might not help. AOSP roms will be more complicated for your mum so try MIUI. MIUI looks like iOS so it might be a good way to go about it. But realistically, all smartphones are more or less the same as each other. There are just different layouts that's all.
I would think that you have tried to teach your mum before but that doesn't help. I would seem to think that she would get stuck in the notifications bar and the apps. If she understands them, then she understands Android.

But no realistically, you could try MIUI, it is a bit simpler to use.

I find Sense to be a lot more complicated than TouchWiz. It's a pain getting to the Phonebook, Messaging, etc. Maybe because I haven't used the phone that much, but as you said Android isn't really hard to use at all as they're all more or less the same.
I'm on the stock Telus ROM right now, so maybe Telus made things complicated and it's not Sense that's complicated to use. How is AOSP more complicated? I'll take a look at MIUI.
What Sense ROM would you recommend? There's so many to choose from.
I'm not sure how Telus set up their phones, but can't you just create the messages and contacts shortcut icons on the home screen?
Aosp isn't so much more complicated to use, it just has more options and flexibility. Its as easy to use as you want it to be, just don't access the extra settings. Just use what you want and leave everything else alone.

It's always a question of what she is used to. If she had an iPhone before, of course android may be a bit confusing at first (maybe she should take a look at miui then).
But actually i also don't see what's complicated 'bout android.
I would propose to flash the latest stable CM release, since it is basic, stable and fast.
Then I would ask your mum, where the problems are exactly?
(f.e: She doesn't find her contacts? Put a widget on the homescreen!)
The good thing about android: you can customize it exactly the way you need it.

AOSP is fine to use, it's just like any other rom. It gets a little complicated when your trying to set a few things up. Like joining Facebook contacts to your contacts. That sort of thing. I've seen a lot of people ask around here in the past about these "complications".
I currently use AceSMod Lite. I did use the full stock version but it was slow due to my SD card being slow, I should say laggy a little. My advice is to just try them out and see which ones you like. Rom choosing is just trial and error.

She used to have a LG Dare. Not iPhone.
She doesn't even use more than 10% of the phone features. Not once have I seen her use the Browser, GPS, etc. Only outbound and inbound calling, and sending text messages to us. That's it. Maybe she shouldn't have gotten a smartphone in the first place...
Long press on home screen then choose shortcuts>applications>contacts
Long press on home screen then choose shortcuts>applications>messages
Now you have quick one press access to her most used features

Showed her numerous times. Advanced phones just aren't for her.
Everytime we go out for lunch on the weekends and she wants to check her e-mail, she asks me to do it for her. She can do it herself too but it takes her a long time sometimes. No she's not a senior.
Just today she called me while I was at work asking why there's a WiFi message on her phone lol.
I don't think you'll find a ROM to simplify things so maybe this isn't the phone for her, maybe consider buying another phone dude

I was going to upgrade my mom's Desire yesterday to some sort of Gingerbread with Sense 2.1 or 3.0 ROM, but why is it so hard to upgrade compared to my Captivate? There's like 50 billion steps involved. My Captivate had only like 3 steps.
Btw are the Sense 3.0 ROMs stable?
How about Oxygen? Compared to others with a lot of menu for tweaks and whatnot. Oxygen is pretty basic.. and damn fast too.
Or try to get a phone not as complicated for your mom. It would be a waste to get a smartphone dumb down instead getting a not so smart phone being used easily and optimally.

I'm mostly a lurker and try not to post much since most any question I have has already been answered (I've spent hundreds of hours on here but only posted a couple of screenshots), but I am looking for a little advice. I have been running CM7 with Tiomat kernel on my Evo for about 2-3 weeks and am pretty happy for the most part, but now I'm getting itchy to try out MIUI for the first time.
1. How does this forum infect people with the insatiable urge to constantly mod? ;-)
2. Any tips on a smooth(ish) transition? This is a pretty subjective question but I figure I will learn more from your answers than in dozens more hours poking around.
You'll be hard pressed to go back to CM.
Get the newest MIUI from MIUI.US
Use Aman Ra, Wipe Everything except SD Card and Battery Stats, if you're not fully charged. Flash MIUI then DT A2SD, if you're partitioned, boot up.
Let it settle, Reboot to Recovery, Flash Kernel (Tiamat 4.1.0 and 3.3.7 Are recommended)
Boot up And have at it.
Hey bonillamktg,
Ive used Miui for a few months as a daily driver and to be honest i loved it, its a simple interface that is easy to use but filled with features. You can overclock it stock with set cpu , out of all the roms i have tried so far i would say it was the smoothest, that flowed the best, the only issue i had was some problems with video recording. but besides that it gave me the best battery life i have ever had over 24 hours on a single charge with the stock evo battery. personally i would recommend it, and I liked it better then CM7 "only my option of course". But I say give it a shot, just nandroid up before hand so you can flash back if you dont like it!
Enjoy, hope I somewhat helped lol
Thanks, HipKat! I just read through your entire Ultimate Guide to Everything Evo 4G and learned a ton. That is probably the single most valuable post I've seen on any forum.
I've already been using Tiamat 4.1.0 and it has been good to me, so I'm glad to hear that it works well with MIUI. I fell asleep soon after posting this but I'm up now so I'll let y'all know the results.
Stevo, your description is exactly what I keep seeing over and over that makes me want to give it a shot. I feel like my setup now is a bit clumsy, it gets the job done but I have to go to 20 different places to tweak everything. Thanks! I'll let you know what the end result looks like!

With or without SBC?
I only use SBC
Yeah and thats what I was reading all about before I gave it a shot to. I say go for it and give it a flash, it really is a nice smooth rom. One thing I forgot to add before when ever I use a sense rom I am normally getting around 150mb free ram, but on MIUI I was getting easily 250mb! & yeah I feel ya, its always a pain to tweak everything to perfection. Well hopefully Miui works out for ya! Your welcome, an thanks for keeping me updated on your journey haha. Good luck
HipKat, wondering if you would know why I'm having an issue. I was actually hoping that this type of feature might be built into MIUI, but I've been using Wallpaper Wizardrii for a little while now because it crops properly for non-scrolling wallpaper and doesn't pixelate...at least not until now. With CM7 & ADW.EX, it worked perfectly, but now, it is pixelating horribly. It's not the images, they are the same ones I used before that worked well.

In ADW ex, do you have the wallpaper hack option turned off? I think that option has something to do with wallpaper quality or color depth or something. You can also try Superwall lite or MultiPicture LWP. They're both live wallpapers, but I've seen no battery drain with either and I've used both. Superwall might be better since you're just using one image.
I get amazing wallpaper quality with MIUI, especially on the default launcher. Clear defaults for ADW or use a home switcher app to see what the wallpaper looks like on the default launcher with the same app. If it looks fine on the stock launcher, it could have something to do with your install of or settings in ADW.
Supersonic Evo 4G | MIUI | Tapatalk
I tried turning off the wallpaper hack and then went back to an image I used to get clearly and it was split in two, basically the left half of the image was moved over to the right.
You are right in how impressive the image quality is on MIUI's stock programming, even using ADW. If I really wanted to, I'd take an image editor, even something basic like MS Paint, and edit an image so it'd be centered where I want it. I change my wallpaper too often for that, though.
I found the Flikie Wallpapers app which has some great wallpapers, but I'll remember Superwall Lite for the future.
Thanks so much for the advice!
Here is where I am at now. I like the combination of Minimalistic Text, Missed It! and Quick Agenda that I put together at the top. I wish I could've integrated the SwitchPro widget into it, but it isn't scaling right for me (It leaves a big gap that I don't like). It's also not letting me edit the images for the switches, which I want to do before integrating it up there.

well i for one have tried the tiomat kernel on the MIUI rom and so far I noticed that my battery drained a little faster than usual. The one thing i did like about it was that i was able to use the hdmi mirroring. But I went back to cyn kernel with miui in the end (^_^)
miui is awesome. i love how many pink themesbthere are...yes im a girl...and how i can customize the theme the way i want it. i promise that you will be addicted. its a lot better than any other rom, and im a flash maniac. i do have a question maybe someone can help me, I'm on the latest miui 1.12.9 when I do group text messaging it force closes? What gives? Any ideas?

Well, unless you use the extended settings, wall paper on MIUI does scroll, so maybe the images you're using are being resized improperly. FYI, and you probably know this, but the wall paper size on scrolling desktops for the EVO are 960px x 800px @72 dpi. 480 x 800 for lock screens.
BTW, you should lose the background on your Minimalistic text. or at least turn the opacity way down.
Just saw your post now, and hopefully hipkat can help you more with this, but i think your issue is to do with the rom itself. That is one downside of Miui there is no 720 picture taking and I really want to say the rom it's self has less resolution to it, when using it i did have a lot of low quality things images, and after flashing back to a sense rom I noticed much better quality images within pictures my backrounds and even just certain apps.
Hope that helps a little, is it just wallpaper your having issues with or is it other images?
MIUI is a 180 degree spin from CM completely different but its real nice you will enjoy it very stable and complete. The 1.11.18 version worked great for me then i tried 1.11.25 and had too many issues. By the way can some1 hlp me get a copy of .18 or .12 just to have? I cant seem to find it anywere and i didit save a copy. Thanks.

One reason why I don't use MIUI is because it doesn't have 4G support. So if you use 4G routinely, you may miss it.
True that. No 4G. For me, I don't have it here, anyhow, and have access to WiFi all the time, home and work

Running unrooted stock FH13 I'm getting a high percentage of my battery being used up by Android OS when the phone is idling. From what I've gathered this seems to be a pretty common problem with the two official ICS builds, but I'm wondering if anyone has any solutions that doesn't involve reverting to GB or rooting my device. Better Battery Stats typically tells me that the culprit is a wlan kernal wake lock, and sometimes is deleted wake lock (which if I understand correctly could be the same culprit as the wlan_wake lock). So it would seem that Wi-Fi is what's killing me, but I've not had any better battery life when I run 3g all day either. I did a factory reset after upgrading to FF18, but I didn't do it again after upgrading to FH13. Any suggestions?
Also, does anyone know if FI03 has the same issue?
This is xda, why are you here if you don't want to root your device?
Honestly if you root it and get rid of the stock apps and bloat that runs in the background you will get better battery life. The first thing I do on official ics is delete the Sprint and Samsung apps like Sprint zone, media hub, social hub, and extra widgets like accuweather and dual clock.
There are guides everywhere for battery life improvement. Also turn off wifi when your not using it.

I appreciate the advice. I knew about that option already though. The reason I don't want to root is because aside from this one issue I'm fine with the stock experience, and I honestly just don't have the time to try different builds and tweak things enough to get the most out of a rooted experience. As far as why I'm on xda, there are plenty of unrooted leaks on this forum too so I can't be the only one who doesn't want to root for whatever reason. For general battery improvement, I've looked and I haven't found anything useful aside from either disabling some apps from starting up or accessing the internet at certain times, which would require rooting, or turning off data/wi-fi (which in my opinion defeats many of the purposes of my phone).
I am well aware that turning certain things off or removing certain apps, even those that would require rooting, would help my battery, but my point is that I didn't do any of those things on GB and my battery life was still perfectly fine. My current understanding of the situation is that this is just what the official FH13 ICS rom on the E4GT does and there's nothing I can do about it. I'm hoping I'm wrong and that someone might have some advice, but if that's really the case feel free to confirm my suspicion as well.
Only thing that comes to mind is - after you reset, did you go right back and install all your apps before testing for battery drain?
Did you try turning off auto sync?

Yes, I did just reinstall all of them immediately. I know that it would have been better to put them back on slowly in order to pinpoint an app that may be causing a problem, but that would have taken a lot of time and I didn't think it'd be worth it. Also, right now better battery stats doesn't show any of my apps holding a wake lock for long and I thought it would show up there if it was one of my installed apps causing the problem. Is that not how it works? Because I'm considering factory resetting again when I get the chance, so if it still could be one of my installed apps I might give the gradual app installation a try if I do it.
No I did not turn off auto-sync because being notified automatically about e-mails and such is one of the main reasons I use this phone. I know that it uses more battery when it's on, but I consider it a necessity. However, now that you mention it, I never really did try turning it off just to see how much of a difference it makes. That could be useful diagnostically so I'll probably give that a shot.
Also, on the auto sync note, is there a way for me to change the time interval that the google services wait to check for new notifications? Because I can't find it anywhere and I could have sworn that was an option in GB.

Disclaimer: None of the following is meant to be rude -
You're asking for a shotgun approach to a specific issue.
You do realize that the majority of people that your asking love to take things apart to find out what's wrong, right? Its kinds like taking the screwdriver away and asking someone to fix it.
That being said:
Autosync: App dependent. Check each app. If you have outlook, unfortunately its also on the server side for push notifications. If you have outlook, talk to the admin and ask if they left push at the standard default. You can find those settings through technet. I posted on this issue so you should be able to find it in search.
Each app install: Without a logcat at a minimum, or a verbose battery monitor app, that's a needle in a haystack. Either
A: go the "one at a time" method
B: Research each app for same issue
C: You can find similar posts on this issue since its such a popular one and try the various suggestions.
Either way, you're going to spend the same amount of time, or more, hunting this down.
Ooor, since you don't want to root:
You can flash ek02 and let the OTA process take you to el29 and try the no root method of ignoring future updates or hit the ignore button several times a day.

You can be stock rooted on the current over the air build if you are happy with touchwiz ics. When I use touchwiz based roms stock rooted is the way I go. You don't need to worry about tweaks or custom kernels if you want to keep it simple. We all started stock rooted, its a little scary at first but its really the way to go if you want the most from your phone. Its one of those things that you kick yourself for not doing sooner when its finally done.
I have been able to surpass my battery life on EL29 GB with various ics roms for months with similar customization done. Bone stock though I think you are right GB is a little better. A new official ICS update should be released soon FI27 though and they only get better. Give it a try stock and really consider rooting. We will help if you need it.
FYI this is a normal days battery for me. I'm currently running an AOSP rom with stock battery
