If he's on the newest update which would give him hboot 2.18 , htcdev.com is what u would need to unlock it

Just use what I posted above, its the easiest method to root 2.2. All you need to do is restart to clear the temp root.

Unrevoked will install clockwork, then you can install amon RA. Lets not jump the gun you still need root lol.
the way your rooting right now is the way i rooted my phone! i think i ran into that exact same problem back then too....i think i pulled my battery and started over....i cant remember...its been like 7-8 months.
also...what you can do...is run the RUU for 2.2 to wipe your phone (also do a factory reset beforehand too and back up your sd card on your comp) and then start over.
or try a different way...try unrevoked or xHausx's method: [ROOT] ~~~ HTC EVO - Auto Root ~~~ v2.5 (4/25/11) - xda-developers
after you got your evo rooted....flash Amon_RA recovery ([Recovery] [09-Feb-2011] RA-supersonic-v2.3 - xda-developers)
hopefully this helps ya out!
So I have already heard that you do not want to do the ota update because it has not been unlocked. I'm not sure which version it is but my phone came with 2.2.3, 4.24.651.1. Which version is safe to attempt root?

You cannot root if you have 2.3.3 with s-on.
(To check if you have s-on or s-off you go to your bootloader and look next to the radio version)
Being has your preloaded with 2.3.3 you're probably s-on and out of luck.
With all due respect, search button is your friend.
Only 2.2...so you can't root.

....and to get S-OFF, you need to follow the guide in my signature.
I am finally ready to root. I want to root for one purpose only......wifi hotspot. I know it has risk, but I'm eligible for an upgrade so worst case scenario.....I'll upgrade. I really don't want to, though.
Soo......I really don't want to try this if the risk is too great for bricking. But if the risk is minimal, then could someone tell me the best step by step guide out there? I'm not that savvy but follow directions well.
I have the very first EVO 4g that came out on June 4, 2010. I have upgraded to 2.3.5 ota. Baseband version 2.15.00.12.19, kennel version 2.6.35.10
Build number 4.67.651.3 XL239674 with software number 4.67.651.3. PRI version 2.33_003, PRL version 60687
Imho its hard to brick your evo and if all you want to do is use it for tether I wouldnt bother with the s-off process untill u get more advance in rooting..here's an awesome guide by captian_throwback make sure u think him

Bricking is actually difficult to do unless your screwing around with your system lol. Its actually quite simple. After you root, you download a ROM(Its basically a UI and how the phone works) and then you Flash it(install it). Youl have a lot of terms to learn lol
I finally rooted mine today for the first time with 2.3.5 and h-boot 2.18 and I used HTC Dev to unlock the bootloader and I must say that it was a pain in the butt. I got it unlocked and tried using the PC36IMG.ZIP to install a Amon RA Recovery and it kept telling me that the main version is newer or something like that. I ended up having to use fastboot to flash the recovery image. Then after installing recovery I had to use the option in recovery to install superuser (really glad that was there)
Then after all that I found the thread using revolutionary plus to root h-boot 2.18 which I'm sure would have made it a lot easier.
I too just wanted root for one reason, to remove bloatware

Well you can just stay unlocked flash a recovery and then require root by flashing it through recovery or android market or you can try to gain s- off with taco root in one of the threads here somewhere which where you can follow I would totally recommend getting S-Off tho

Why are you using taco root? That tool is for downgrading to s-off. For that to work, You need to re-lock bootloader and follow the instructions to s-off. Having a unlocked bootloader will cause errors. htcdev is something pretty useless because we have s-off, just my opinion.
My software is up to date so no root or s-off methods work I read taco root will work but I myself am not talented enough apparently to do this. All the one click methods including a one click downgrade method does not work (vivow hack). So I assumed HTC tool would get me to at least be able to flash a custom Rom. Does anyone have any suggestions to make me a happier dinc2 owner?

After you click the green button that says "Begin Unlock Bootloader", there is a popup. If you're not getting that, maybe your browser is blocking popups? Maybe you can temporarily disable that?
