Rather new to the Kindle Rooting..but....not to rooting in general. Rooted my kindle fire....installed TWRP....and then used the Alien Droid ROM. No problems, except trying to figure out how to change volume level? I have searched forums...can't find anything. Anyone know how ? I appreciate your response in advance.
Make sure its in tablet mode!!! Or you can just go to settings and/volumes/ and change it there
I recommend installing Volume Control by RubberBigPepper from the Play Store. Allows volume control from any app, any screen, any time.
Thanks everyone. I didn't have it in tablet mode. Once I figured that out it was all good.

So I will be upgrading my phone in Sept and want to give my son my Epic. I'm currently running latest ACS rom, but was wondering if there was a version without the phone / Messaging software installed or if there was a safe way to remove these features myself? Reason being is because when I give him the phone, it will be deactivated.
Thoughts?
Thanks!

Install the free Applocker and lock it along with Settings so he can't uninstall it without a password or code.
LOL
You could flash the midNIGHT BYOR ROM. It comes with only the base and you have the option of either installing "standard" apps or just the ones you need. Fast, stable and based on EC05.

If you're rooted, just uninstall (delete) Messaging.apk and Phone.apk from /system/app with root explorer or just use uninstaller for root and delete phone and messaging.
I want this too. But if u don't find a way to turn off the radio the phone will constantly search for a signal. And when in airplane mode u can't use bluetooth

Right... Searching for a signal will kill it. Airplane mode is interesting and I doubt at this point my son will need bluetooth.

Actually he could really turn this thing into a game machine with bluetooth and sixaxis control app from the market as well as some emulators.... about 3 hours of play time overclocked to 1.2 and smooth as if it were really that system

Sorry to revive an old post, but I find it interesting that there is only this one post on taking an old Android phone and making it into a pure PMP. I'm currently looking to do this with my old HTC Aria and was looking for suggestions for apk's to remove once I get a lean ROM installed.
Also, I noticed in an above reply that someone said BT wouldn't work with airplane mode on. It does work with my Aria.
Thanks for any suggestions
I can confirm that bluetooth works while in airplane mode on CM7

I have been more than happy not rooting and really enjoyed using the Screen Orientation Control app from Eflow Inc.....until updating the other day.
Now they have updated the app and the landscape screen now sets in the total opposite side of the Nexus 7. Now the bottom is the side where the power and volume buttons are. Because of the case I have and they way i use the Nexus, I cant accept this odd change.
Does anyone have or know where I could get the the Ver.1.1 apk? I could not find the 1.1 version file anywhere and do not think it is possible to "undue" an app update.
EDIT SEPT 19th. Now after uninstalling and reinstalling this app works correctly like it did originally.

You could always try emailing the app developer and asking them for it

Without root you can use the default launcher with full home screen rotation, gotta look for it, but its here somewhere in the n7 app section. They put it on the market I believe.
I'm using full home screen rotation with the default launcher and it works great! I did it the root way (adding a small one line text file) but its the same thing as if you use the launcher apk.

Can't you just uninstall the update?

Like theoneabove said.
Then use a backup and restore app to save the previous version that worked for you.

fixed.
I had uninstalled the app...then later the next day or two re-installed it. Seems to be back to normal now with the new 1.2 version, working correctly like it did from the start. :good:
Been a while since I've really looked at ROMs since I quite enjoyed the 2.55 version of PA (didn't feel like going up to 4.2 yet).
However, my power button seems to have physically broken for no apparent reason (I think it might be stuck on the 'in position... because it showed the power menu once and then hasn't worked since)... So now I need to find an alternative way to actually use my phone. So what out there has touchwake as a feature and is nice and stable?

So I figured out how to root and install a custom rom without much difficulty. I'm running the latest Energy ICS rom from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1528024 and I haven't had much trouble with it. I managed to make and install my own boot animation manually and change my unlock sound effect to a Star Trek Communicator, but when I try to change the Volume-1.ogg file located in /system/media/ui, it does not change the sound so that I don't have that somewhat annoying beep when I adjust the volume. Deleting it or replacing it does not do anything, it remains as a beep after I reboot. Is there still anyway I can change the sound effect?

Has anyone found a good app to boost the volume on the kindle fire with jellybean installed? I've tried a few apps and none have any impact. I know jellybean fixed the flaw these apps were exploiting. Is there any way to boost the sound on jellybean on the KF?
Try volume +

I tried that one made absolutely no impact.

any if not all of the jellybean roms are running some form of hashcode's kernel. he recently just put new drivers for the speakers in and mine are pretty loud half way. maybe factory reset and update your rom if needed
which rom are you using?
I'm on the stock 4.2.2 rom from february, put it on and had no issues. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2041694 Verizon just released a streaming live TV app so sound is only just now something I care about to be honest.
I like everything just how it is I just would like more volume, if there's an updated stock rom I'd like to put that one for sure.
