So I will be upgrading my phone in Sept and want to give my son my Epic. I'm currently running latest ACS rom, but was wondering if there was a version without the phone / Messaging software installed or if there was a safe way to remove these features myself? Reason being is because when I give him the phone, it will be deactivated.
Thoughts?
Thanks!

Install the free Applocker and lock it along with Settings so he can't uninstall it without a password or code.
LOL
You could flash the midNIGHT BYOR ROM. It comes with only the base and you have the option of either installing "standard" apps or just the ones you need. Fast, stable and based on EC05.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126163
If you're rooted, just uninstall (delete) Messaging.apk and Phone.apk from /system/app with root explorer or just use uninstaller for root and delete phone and messaging.
I want this too. But if u don't find a way to turn off the radio the phone will constantly search for a signal. And when in airplane mode u can't use bluetooth

Right... Searching for a signal will kill it. Airplane mode is interesting and I doubt at this point my son will need bluetooth.

Actually he could really turn this thing into a game machine with bluetooth and sixaxis control app from the market as well as some emulators.... about 3 hours of play time overclocked to 1.2 and smooth as if it were really that system

Sorry to revive an old post, but I find it interesting that there is only this one post on taking an old Android phone and making it into a pure PMP. I'm currently looking to do this with my old HTC Aria and was looking for suggestions for apk's to remove once I get a lean ROM installed.
Also, I noticed in an above reply that someone said BT wouldn't work with airplane mode on. It does work with my Aria.
Thanks for any suggestions
I can confirm that bluetooth works while in airplane mode on CM7

Hello,
Does anyone have any guides on how to root a Samsung Epic 4G Touch?
My wife and have ordered this phone and it is set to arrive this Monday.
I am trying to get a head start on the rooting process, so that I can get remove the Sprint bloat apps (Sprint Navigation, Sprint NASCAR, etc.) and also install the Mobile Hotspot hack. Currently, I have a rooted HTC Hero (Android OS 2.1) with the Wireless Tether app. The rooted HTC Hero has been a great phone. Due to its older Android OS and hardware, it cannot seem to handle the demand of current apps and the Wirless Tether app is pain slow. My previous Android phone was the Samsung Moment, which I thoroughly despised. I experienced nothing but problems with it. In face, I swore that I would never get another Samsung phone again. But alas, the features/specs of the Samsung Epic 4G Touch impressed my wife and I. I was eligible for a phone upgrade and we decide to take the plunge.
I would like to be as prepared as possible before the phone arrives.
As previously mentioned, I'd like to root the phone, remove Sprint bloat apps, and install the mobile hotspot app.
I also heard there is a wi-fi issue after rooting the phone. Is there any way to resolve this? I will be using wi-fi very often.
I do not have any previous flashing ROMs, other that the stock 2.1 ROM that was provided on the HTC site. I was able to root this 2.1 ROM with the Z4root app.
Thank you in advance for all your help.
Sfhubs auto root in dev sticky. Easy as pie. For a stock look rom with hotspot, try calkulins rom.

qbking77 may be a great asset to you if you're also more of a visual learner. Here's his latest vid on how to root the E4GT (sfhub's method) on EL29 which your phone should be on when it arrives.

Thank you for the quick reply.
I have read that the wireless tether app is problematic and the Sprint Mobile Hotspot hack is faster and more reliable. Which do you all recommend?
The Calkulin ROM looks great. The hacked Sprint Mobile Hotspot is already preloaded in the Calkulin ROM? Are the Sprint bloat apps already removed?
Since the phone will NOT be activated and straight out of the box, what would be the recommended steps to ensure the best rooting/flashing results.
I am trying to ensure the best possible result.
Thank you again in advance.

Since you have some time its quite simple go into development and read the OP of different roms and of course the stickies normally have the most reliable methods. This is what I normally do. Honestly its best to read for yourself which can always make trouble shooting in the future easier. Also don't Use Rom manager. Good luck and happy reading....
Just remember development has all your answers
Thank you for your help.
I am currently running Calkulins ROM via Mobile ODIN.

Hi all,
My phone is rooted. Not a fan of the Sense 4.0 SMS/MMS app. I know I can download the default ICS 4.0.3 MMS.apk from the market.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.concentriclivers.mms.com.android.mms
When I go to install it, it says it will overwrite the existing application. Before I get reckless...
Couple questions:
- Why is there no existing mms.apk in /system/app ? I can't find it. Does HTC call it something different or...?
- How do I backup the current Sense version in case I screw this up and need to restore it?
- Is the Sense one tightly integrated into the rest of Sense? Will it break other apps, widgets...?
So far I got this working.
1. installed stock ICS SMS from market
2. backed up and removed /system/app/Message+CRC_1.apk
3. rebooted phone
Haven't tested MMS nor any sense features that might bomb (I hope not)
I'll update thread if there are any problems and I need to roll this back
Any Update
Hey. Just wondering if you had any update on how this worked? Everything still fine? I want to go to the ICS MMS app, cause the sense one isn't as nice.

I use it daily, the SMS app works perfectly. Love this change.
The HTC SMS widgets that display your messages on your desktop may not work (don't think mine do) but this is easily remedied by just finding other widgets in the market etc. Just don't put the default HTC ones on your desktop.
Won't uninstalling the app just automatically put stock sense app back in there?

No. The stock ICS app does not play nice with the stock Sense app, you can't have them both on the phone at the same time. Its not like when you install GOSMS or something.
I had to actually delete the sense app right off the phone completely for it to work properly. Otherwise I had strange problems such as messages being sent twice.
Since I physically deleted the sense app there is no going back without re-installing the sense APK.
Did you save the stock apk? No joke one of my hesitations is the messaging app. If I can switch to stock ICS for messaging I may be ordering mine yet tonight.

Honestly no why would i? I updated this post to be kind but I'm not building something here, this was for my own use and it works perfectly. I'd that's not what you're looking to hear, find another thread. I won't lose sleep at night.
As for backing up the original sense app, yes I did see step 2 above. I used adb for this just pull the file.
Again this works perfectly If anyone cares to try it. nothin to lose, if you don't like it just put the sense file back and reboot.
I installed both the calendar and the sms app today and they seem to work fine. Haven't tried mms. Haven't uninstalled anything yet, will see if I run into trouble. Thanks for posting readk, been searching for this but didn't find it until now
EDIT: Ran into problems immediately of course where pressing the Messaging app launched the HTC Messages app. Following your instructions for backup and removal seems to have done the trick though. Next step will be to do the same for the calendar

Wow, get out of the basement once in a while and realize how to communicate with humans. I simply really liked the idea of stock ICS messaging on the HOX and since I don't have mine yet I was just asking to see it because I imagine it would look really awesome. Why would you? I guess since you were sharing what you were doing I thought you wouldn't mind. Guess not.

I have ROM toolbox lite on my galaxy, I've noticed most of the features you need the paid version to be able to access them. My question is are those features really worth the $4 price tag? I'm starting to think it's worth it but since I've never used those features I don't know for sure, so I just wanted you're guys opinion whether I should buy it or stick with the lite.
Thanks in advance.

Yeah, definitely worth it. A great app and, assuming you would buy only 4 of the pay features it has from other devs for 99 cents each you are already ahead.

One last question, I bought it and I'm trying to change my icons, for example I tried to change my battery icon. I I picked the one I want and hit install it did nothing I pick the one I want again and hit download it did nothing. What the heck am I doing wrong? The only icon I'm able to change is the signal.

Are, that is tough one, sorry. No simple answers.
What ROM are you using? Gingerbread, ICS, JB?
After Gingerbread everything changed and most apps cannot handle the newer resource files. GB is easy - most icon changes are fine.
If you just want to change the battery icon and running ICS look up UOT KITCHEN. It works well for GB, it can do battery icon for most ICS ROMs, don't know about JB.
Whatever you try make sure you have a good nandroid backup! Some of the processes can damage resource files.

I just made my very first nandroid backup last night. Right now I am on the stock rom, and come to find out it's not just the battery icon that I can't change or download it's all icons. I can download other icons and after I install them I reboot my phone but still have the stock icons its just the battery icon that wont even download, even though I can download and install the other ones after rebooting the phone I'm still on stock icons. I guess I just don't know enough about the Android operating system I probably shouldn't be playing around with these things until I learn more. I'm actually thinking about getting a refund around tool box not working on my stock rom and I'm very happy with the stock rom and have no intention on flashing a new one. Sorry for my spelling and grammar and punctuation but I'm driving right now in using voice to text lol.

Pro version is definitly worth it. It is in my opinion the best all around tool to have for android. It has many very useful features and can replace a handful of different apps and puts them all in one. For example sd boost. Cpu control. Not to mention the font and boot animation installers. Very good tool to have.

Hi, my names Chad and im a flashaholic. It all started when I got my Sprint Galaxy Note II. After rooting and flashing my first rom there was no looking back.
I have found a daily driver and I'm not going to drop any names. Every dev involved with creating these mods and roms for this device are amazing. While performance is important, I like moding, EVERYTHING.
I would like to know what everyone else likes about flashing roms. What is important to you? Maybe some screenshots of mods you've done to your phone?

I actually flash a lot less than I did when I have the Evo 4G. I'm more modded, but I'm mainly just changing files.
I'm running doexidezed stock MC2, Persues Kernel 3.6, with the 4-1 reboot, all mutliwindow mods. Changed the Spen detection sounds to ligh sabler, changed boot anmination to Andy's Pee On Apple, changed boot sound to Lexus ISF start up and engine rev, disable shut off animations, using only one homescreen page (no widgets), use the Trev E Mod WiFi tether beta 3.3 and folder mount.
I'm interested in the cyogenmod when it's out of alpha. I'm waiting for the mutliboot mod to get completed. It's getting closer on the international. BootManager on the Evo4G was the best app for flashaholics. You could have a daily and as many ROMs as your SD card could hold. I usually had three--barebones Sense rom, Cyogenmod (Android 2.3), and Cyogenmod (Android 4). Here and there I would have a forth or fifth to fiddle with.
The other rom I'm interested in trying out, and it's extremely early, is more of port of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. I've seen a couple screen shots, pretty sweet if you're into the mutlitwindow/mutlitask thing.
Right now, deoxidized stock meets my needs well. Nothing, other than Google Wallet, appears to be borked. And a few mods, I able to more.
My name is Jamice Welbon and I am a flashaholic I first introduced to flashing through my friend Treo Central.com he get me hooked flashing my Treo 600, 650, 700p and 710wp but soon after that treocentral.com was not cutting it for me so I tried ppc geeks. com and started flashing my touch pro 2.
I tried every windows ROM I could find and even experimented with some android. With the introduction of Windows phone and the stifled future future ROM development I knew I needed something stronger.
I went to Xda developers.com and started using Android on a regular bases. I first purchases the Samsung Epic then I tried the Epic Touch 4g and I am currently using the Galaxy Note 2. I have customized my boot animation (My Little Pony FIM), converted my phone into tablet mode, changed my font, added a hack version of Google Wallet, but I am currently using a non hack version since the Note 2 is now an official supported device. I have a hacked mod to remove the unsupported device message from Google Wallet since my device is rooted.
I am currently using a ROM which is half touch wiz and half stock Android. The dialer and contacts are stock Android. I even put a mod on my phone where I can customize the DPI for every app on my phone. I can even open up as many apps as I want and have them floating on my phone's desktop. I am fening for the Galaxy Note 3.
I am currently thinking about modding my shut down screen.
I need help and that is why I am on this forum. It has affected my job and my relationships in a negative way.

It seems like there are alot of different versions of this phone. I assume im in the right spot with a sprint note 2? The mackrom allstars has been working great.
Thank you much!
Flashing adventure
So i ventured off to my flashing adventure. I first tried jelly 16.0 which was pretty awesome and the flash works in regular browser which is AWESOME but it didnt seem to have floating window. I tried installing the apk switcher thingie and it didnt even show up. I found the thread for the floating multi window installed it and nothing..... I flashed the sprint zip file for it and then the phone wouldnt boot.
I installed wolfpack and i still dont have floating windows...... i am going to install the apk next and will update my progress
Ok so im supposed to have a toggle icon which i dont and waiting for answer in the rom forum. Also the flash doesnt work in the desktop version of the browser something that worked in jellie rom 16.0 =(
Im running MacksRom (Plain Jane MA7) at the moment and have multiwindow desktop mod. It's in xposed settings.

No. It's a framework work. As mentioned above, you just need install the Xposed framework APK. I've used it on a deoxidezed MA7 stock rom. MC2 is just more performance tweaks and bug fixes.
Ok i understand more but now i lost multiview
i did the installer i activated the plugins in teh installer i set the resolution on android system to 1280x800 i have rebooted and no multiview now. i cant get it back =(

I finally got it worked out
I checked out the OP in jellyroms post where it talks about installing the framework. I factory reset cleared caches dalvik etc and reflashed. Once flashed i did exactly what it said minus the downloading the items because they were alread in the rom. Now i have multiwindow. I didnt mess with the DPI though only set the resolution to 1280x800 and it works. I am scared to use the DPI changer though because although it looks really super cool. I lost the multiview doing it. I even tried setting the multiview to the same dpi. the com-flash whatever file and reboot still no luck... So it does work but im in regular phone resolution which isnt bad i guess because you dont have to mess with all the apps dpis etc? the internet built in was FC'n during my mess of flashing etc.....
Any ideas or suggestions on why i lost the multiview? I would like to change the dpi at some point but i dont want to factory reset (which is what i had to eventually do to get the multiview back anyway.
Thank you for all that put up with my frantic questions.
Glad you got it up and working!

I have an old Sprint Evo 4G sitting around and wanted to turn it into a media device plus GPS for geocaching. As always, I came here and looked around but I am absolutely overwhelmed by the number of ROMs to choose from.
I'm looking for a stable ROM that does the following:
1 - Preserves Wifi, GPS, Bluetooth, and maybe emergency calling (but with an option to turn it off).
2 - No bloatware, but includes Google Apps and access to Google Play
3 - Great battery life
4 - Very stable and also a ROM people are still updating
I found a few that are interesting including Ubersonic RC3, Jellybread, Thundershock, and Stock Barebones. In the past I ran CyanogenMod 7.1, SprintLovers, and it's currently got Stock Sense on it.
Can anyone please point me in the right direction? I'd really appreciate the help.
Ubersonic seems to be the one people are using for a media device. Might want to give it a shot
