Hi all,
My phone is rooted. Not a fan of the Sense 4.0 SMS/MMS app. I know I can download the default ICS 4.0.3 MMS.apk from the market.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.concentriclivers.mms.com.android.mms
When I go to install it, it says it will overwrite the existing application. Before I get reckless...
Couple questions:
- Why is there no existing mms.apk in /system/app ? I can't find it. Does HTC call it something different or...?
- How do I backup the current Sense version in case I screw this up and need to restore it?
- Is the Sense one tightly integrated into the rest of Sense? Will it break other apps, widgets...?
So far I got this working.
1. installed stock ICS SMS from market
2. backed up and removed /system/app/Message+CRC_1.apk
3. rebooted phone
Haven't tested MMS nor any sense features that might bomb (I hope not)
I'll update thread if there are any problems and I need to roll this back
Any Update
Hey. Just wondering if you had any update on how this worked? Everything still fine? I want to go to the ICS MMS app, cause the sense one isn't as nice.

I use it daily, the SMS app works perfectly. Love this change.
The HTC SMS widgets that display your messages on your desktop may not work (don't think mine do) but this is easily remedied by just finding other widgets in the market etc. Just don't put the default HTC ones on your desktop.
Won't uninstalling the app just automatically put stock sense app back in there?

No. The stock ICS app does not play nice with the stock Sense app, you can't have them both on the phone at the same time. Its not like when you install GOSMS or something.
I had to actually delete the sense app right off the phone completely for it to work properly. Otherwise I had strange problems such as messages being sent twice.
Since I physically deleted the sense app there is no going back without re-installing the sense APK.
Did you save the stock apk? No joke one of my hesitations is the messaging app. If I can switch to stock ICS for messaging I may be ordering mine yet tonight.

Honestly no why would i? I updated this post to be kind but I'm not building something here, this was for my own use and it works perfectly. I'd that's not what you're looking to hear, find another thread. I won't lose sleep at night.
As for backing up the original sense app, yes I did see step 2 above. I used adb for this just pull the file.
Again this works perfectly If anyone cares to try it. nothin to lose, if you don't like it just put the sense file back and reboot.
I installed both the calendar and the sms app today and they seem to work fine. Haven't tried mms. Haven't uninstalled anything yet, will see if I run into trouble. Thanks for posting readk, been searching for this but didn't find it until now
EDIT: Ran into problems immediately of course where pressing the Messaging app launched the HTC Messages app. Following your instructions for backup and removal seems to have done the trick though. Next step will be to do the same for the calendar

Wow, get out of the basement once in a while and realize how to communicate with humans. I simply really liked the idea of stock ICS messaging on the HOX and since I don't have mine yet I was just asking to see it because I imagine it would look really awesome. Why would you? I guess since you were sharing what you were doing I thought you wouldn't mind. Guess not.

anyway to get that apk file to work on other roms, Sense and or AOSP? i searched around and same people were asking same question as me but for the desire. they had no help in the thread (dated back in 2010)

Have you tried extracting the apk and pushing it via adb or root explorer? If I'm not mistaken miui is like sense in a way, some of the core apps won't function without the launcher and main components. I mean the music app and a few others will work on other roms but main apps like phone, setting, SMS, all need the miui framework to actually work. I could be wrong but that's why no one ever mentions it because they'd rather just run miui itself.

Im sure many people have tried it but why run the sms app and not just the whole miui. It's just going to force close because its missing the other miui components. The sense mms.apk is the same way; it wont work without the HTC framework. Someone tried to get the miui sms apk working back when I had my cdma heroc and failed. Moral of the story: just run miui (which I hate lol).

So I downloaded this and I've never used Beautiful Widgets before, so this was my first. I found a very nice skin "Ice Cream Sandwich" by Tama-Chan.
I go to Settings as I'm not sure if you can change something, and when I go into General, it just Force Closes everytime. I un-installed and installed again and it's still FC'ing.
Also, is it possible to edit an existing skin? I just want to get rid of two black boxes surrounding the clock and the blue border, but I'm not sure you can. I have googled as much as I can and I can't find anything.
Any guidance would be very helpful, thanks in advance
What version you on for ICS and BW? BW had a update just a little bit ago and not sure if that fixed what you are having issues with or not as I already updated. I did install the skin you have and I was able to get to the settings no problem and no FC at all. I am running 41D for ICS.
Well it was pretty recent as I snapped it up during the 10p sale. I'm using the standard ICS no custom ROMS flashed or anything. Do you think I should uninstall and install again? Or does that mean I have to pay again? I'm such an Android noob lol...this is my first true Android phone

It is possible to modify the skins. Go to /sdcard/data/beautifulwidgets. The sub folders will be like: tskins (toggle skins), wskins (weather skins) etc. Those folders contain the image(s) for the skins

Hi, I just flashed CM9 and I'm loving it.
The only thing I miss though is the feature
when you had a new text message, it woke up your screen.
Is that possible with CM9& the stock messaging app?
Is there some kind of mod or modded mms.apk or
something that when you get a new message, your screen will light up?
I apreciate the help, but No, I don't want a Third Party SMS app.
I'd like to keep it stock so no "GO SMS, CHOMP, HANDCENT", etc!
Thank you so much!

I would actually suggest a third party messaging app such as gosms pro.
*Very Nice and Extensive List of Features
*Themes
*Private inbox (password protected)
*Emoji plugin for iPhone emotions
And more.
I used to not like third party messaging apps but this one is very well developed.

Yeah, I know I was talking about GOSMS. But I installed the one you recommended. I loved it, until I found out that unlocks your screen too. I'm using cm10, aug22 nightly and tried both applications. they both worked only when the phone is not on silent. but what i really wanted was the screen to turn on when in silent mode. it'll be really useful especially if you don't want the phone to ring or vibrate, yet you want to know that a text came in just by seeing the screen turn on. i'm also using a galaxy s, so i don't have led lights. any other apps i could try?

Thanks, I've tried that, and it works for everything except when my phone is in silent mode... which is the only thing I need. I just need my screen to turn on when I get a text, using jelly bean's stock sms app.
I am looking for a ROM for my EVO 4G that has:
1, JellyBean and Sense 4.0,
2. Sprint VVM working,
3. Facebook profile picture sync to contact's picture (I think this is a sense feature hence why I want sense, honestly I prefer the look of CM10),
4. as much stable and working as possible, especially flash, don't much care about WiMAX and FFC.
I am currently on AlienMOD Solar Flare Series V, which I like for the most part. However, I can not get Sprint VVM to work, it sends me texts about voicemail but I don't want to call voicemail as it uses minutes and I don't always get the texts. Additionally I can't seem to get my contact's picture to sync with Facebook.
Honestly if I could disable the text VM notifications, get Sprint VVM to work, and figure out how to get the contact's pics to since with facebook, I would be happy as is. But I have searched and searched and I can not find a solution that works.
Any help with either of these would be awesome.
Well if that is all you need my suggestion is get a new phone. There will not be any jb sense roms for this phone. Sense for the og stopped with gingerbread.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda app-developers app
Anything after Gingerbread will never have EVERYTHING working. If you want to flash ICS of JB you have to make compromises.
For Facebook contact pictures, I remember an app called Photo Unlocker but it was removed from the Play Store. I haven't had any luck locating it.
Honestly if I could just get VVM working on this rom and remove the text notifactions for VM I would be happy. I can work around the facebook issue.
Haxsync works good for Facebook sync. Or if you want free use free Facebook contact sync.

Actually I think I am going to try this out...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2166856&highlight=swap&page=8
Does it support swap?
By swap do you mean like an a2sd or something similar? Or as on a RAM swap partition?
There are a few miui issues. Stock mms will error if more than 160 characters are sent. You also have to change resolution of front camera. When first opened you get green picture. I think that is it.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda app-developers app

I am also going to give this one a try:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1612933
Honestly I think TNN is becoming my goto ROM dev team.
That is dependant on the kernel. Lionfish will work with this ROM and give you the swap feature. It is what I run on all my AOSP roms. Just be sure your sd-ext is not an ext4 file system. 2 and 3 will work but the the lionfish kernel does not support 4.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda app-developers app
LOL. Always a compromise.... Want sense? Then no JB... Want Swap? No EXT4.... This is a very delicate back and forth... Oh well. I can't complain too much...

Even the best of us get problems. Problems we can't solve with our own knowledge.
Basically, running newest Facebook Messenger on my Xperia Arc S. Even though messages come in perfectly, I do not get any notifications about the received message. A tiny 1 appears on the Messenger icon, but that's all (attached screenshot). Chat Heads does not appear, no notification in the status bar (SystemUI) nor any vibration or sound. I have checked all notification settings, everything is turned on and should be working.
The only vibration, that happens at all, is when the Messenger is already open and someone else (than current conversation) sends me a message.
Current phone setup is Gin2JellyBean ROM (Android 2.3.7), version 2.5.2, with GB Lupus v2 kernel and 64 baseband.
I have tried clearing app data, reinstalling Messenger app, reinstalling ROM and kernel, changing baseband, tried also DooMKernel v22. On the internet, I found recommendations to not use more than one Facebook Android app, though it did not fix it either.
Does anyone have any ideas, possible solutions? Or has anyone occurred similar thing?
Just to add, I will not move over to another ROM.
Well, GB is quite old, and the apps keep getting updated so there may be something in GB breaking the notification mechanism. Did you check with someone else on the same ROM if they had the same problem?
You may also want to try with an older version of Facebook messenger and see if it works.

I was expecting people with same ROM to post here, if they have such issue or not.
GB is the only firmware, that currently works out for me, thereby I do not wish to change ROMs. None of the ICS ROMs has satisfied me yet.
Will try out older version of the app.
EDIT: Older version (2.7.2) made no difference, old design, but still same issue with the notifications.

try flashing framework-res from another rom. If problem is still there, include systemUI. I had this one problem before about notifications because frameworkxml doesn't stack with custom systemUI.
Did you freeze google play services? Its the main cause of not getting notifications. Btw i had done that so i didnt get.
Edit: on ics roms also the same stuff. Not get notifications. Maybe the app has some issue.

Hmm, this may be a problem, as framework-res is tightly linked to many parts of the system and changing it may cause issues. I will try it out and see if I can fix it.

I doubt the issue lies there, though will try it out.
EDIT: I must have misread the first time. I never froze that app, as it is vital at my daily usage.
Time to update on this issue. I just installed an ICS ROM, Anzumi 1.3, and the issue is still around. Using stock kernel and stock baseband from .587 firmware (which is 77, if I am not mistaken) and newest Messenger.
Gonna do a last try with stock firmware some time soon...
EDIT: Attached picture of logcat when I receive a Facebook message. Starting with the first line of 12-15 20:37:22:801
EDIT again: Using older version (2.7.2-release) now works, will try it out for more time.
So its app issue or maybe we are missing some lib files for them to work. We have to check it on stock ics. If it works there then we can confirm the rom developers removed some libs for space or whatsoever reason
