Hello everybody!
My question is simple.
Should i wait for the official Froyo for my HTC Desire, or should I usw a custom Rom from this Board?
I am very disappointed with the battery-time of my normal stock 2.1 rom...
My Desire just lasts for about one day with normal usage.
Is the battery-life going to be better with the official froyo (an with roms out of the section of rom-cooking in this board) ?
Would you recommend me to wait for the official Rom, or not?
Are there some reasons against an unofficial froyo-rom?
Wich rom you would recommend at the moment?
(dont need htc-sense...)
Thanks for you help, and sorry for bad english
If you haven't done so already, I'd recommend checking out "Juice Defender" in the Marketplace. You can fine tune your APN/WIFI settings and such to get much more out of your battery. Best of all it's free. If that doesn't satisfy your battery hungry needs then I suggest you stop listening to my advice as I know squat about custom Roms. What I do know though is that battery life is reported to be greatly improved in Froyo.
Even if you wait for official froyo, the devs here will make it better and add more features make it faster etc and you'll be back here in no time you can always unroot your phone of you change your mind.
the proper answer world be depends on how you use your phone, I too would suggest using "Juice Defender" if your battery needs are not met, however note that even if you w8 for the official froyo rom you will probably not notice a major power saving effect over the existing rom. In fact I doubt that you will notice any improvement in battery life whatsoever considering you seem to be a proper power user.
Some custom roms run less services/process so you will be able to save up some battery life, its the only proper way too cut down on power consumption I would imagine the closer to the vanilla system the better.
With HTC straight out lying about the release date for the update (as usual), yesterday I took the plunge and have moved over to DeFroST after rooting.
Based on my initial impressions, battery life has improved. Rooting opens up the possibility of using the brilliant application that is setCPU to very finely tune many battery consuming aspects of the device and should make 48hrs achievable without switching off push and sync. There's a thread in the dev section about this.
I would do it. DeFroST is a brilliant ROM, but there are plenty of gems in the Dev section

I'm guessing you needed an unlock code to upgrade your radio since your on orange?
i flashed yesterday and , oh boy, what can i say - its great.
you root your phone with unrevoked, then flash a custom rom, then the new radio ( for froyo ). easy, peasy, painless. froyo kicks ass, i chose leedroid and its so speedy, an battery life has improved, altough not too much i think
@ bedeabc
When did HTC lie about the release date:???: the only official announcement I heard was 3rd quarter... there is still weeks/months to go yet. Any reply you see posted via some ones uncle who told my mother that apparently honest to god customer service said two weeks...is not 'official' lol.

So, you guys think, that its not be worth, to wait for the official froyo?
There will not be some "new" things, i will miss in the froyo, I can get in den Dev-Area?
Cause i dont like it, to change the rom every 2 month ;-)
ATM I have a rooted desire with ocuv kernel.
Untouched radio.
Is the upgread "heavy"? (dangerour, time-expensive?)
Thanks for all of your Help
I just upgraded to Froyo, Android 2.2, yesterday.
Well i think i love it. Extra functions and the speed is incredible.
When rooting & new rom - do you lose HTC Sense?

Well me personal I'm waiting, if I had a branded phone I probably wouldn't wait as it'll be X amount of weeks after HTC release until you carrier release its version with bloatware.
I am obviously one of those easily satisfied people, I think its a great phone as is with just a few tweaks here and there (voice search, keyboard etc..) which didn't even require root

depends on the new rom. If it has Sense you don't lose it Rooting doesn't concern Sense or anything else on interface
what's important for everyone who's considering to move on new froyo sense roms (2.06) - they're stable and fast, I'm using them for a week and haven't noticed one error or reboot.
You can try them out and then decide for yourself whether to return to eclair, or use them until htc releases official version. I'm certain you will choose second option

you should check the radio thread in development subforum, last version of radio doesn't lock Orange phones...
I have tried numerous custom 2.3 roms but each one eventually causes me a headache in the end. I honestly do appreciate all the hard work going into these roms but unless somebody can point me in the direction of a 99.9% troublefree 2.3 I will have to stick to 2.2 for the time being.
no, 2.3 is not officially out yet, i know the roll out time in the UK as at some point at the end of the year (after all the naff branding the carriers have to put on them)
end of this month (or sometime in the next few months) is the most proposed theory at the moment.
when the official 2.3 release/RUU etc. comes out that'll probably lead to a few more stable roms IMO
AdamG's Oxygen and his DevNull have both been 100% trouble free for me.. Tried one of those?

How long have you been using the rom if you don't mind me asking? It's just after a week or 2 I start getting problems with gingerbread roms.
Gingerbread update for Desire by the end of May
"Three, a carrier based in UK has responded to one of its customers saying that the Gingerbread update for Desire would arrive by the end of May on their carrier locked phones." If that's true we should have it here on xda soon

The popular stock android roms out right now are very stable and if you do happen to find a bug, there's usually aa update within the week to fix it.
I'm running ReflexS 2.0.7 and it's actually running very fast considering that it's running sense. I'm running it with cm7 hboot but it worked great with stock hboot too. I find that you really just have to try a few roms to try and get a feel for which one works best with your phone and your needs.

I wouldn't bet on the end of may.
They have always been mentioning end of month but june, not may.
Its about time for the update to come out we waited so long now and all other models have gotten just do it already im sick of waiting.
Honestly, if you don't mind losing Sense, then AdamG's Oxygen and Devnull are top of the shop. Both updated now to 2.3.4 and as hack-free as possible.
DevNull is as plain-jane as you can get, I personally prefer the extended power controls and pull-down notifications menu on Oxygen.
I've been using Oxygen since the first 2.3 build (since end of February) and have had one restart in that time and no freezes.
I have it running with LauncherPro 0.86 and it is smooth, bug-free and has very good battery over Froyo stock. I hammer it with wifi browsing, couple of hours of mp3 a day and my office has terrible signal. I generally finish the day on 40%+.

Well, when the Desire came out at first it was the best Android device around.
Add to that Sense is the least bad of all the custom UIs out there.
And like me, they might not have tried an AOSP rom until after having a Desire for a while.

I agree with you.Word.
Leedroid 3.06 works very well as stock gingerbread with sense, i used it for a while with no issues. But.... my absolute favorite which has not given any issues is insertcoin 1.05 stock. it uses cm7 boot and ultra stable

Spot on
This week I'm presented with a choice: purchase a HTC Desire HD or a Samsung Galaxy S. I already gathered some info on the Galaxy S phone but I cant seem to get a hold of much about the Desire HD.
So I wanted to know which is the latest official Android version for the Desire HD? (no custom mods, no "leaks", just interested in the latest one released)
I plan to use my new phone mostly for games so I'd also appreciate it if anyone can give me details on how the phone performs with those aswell.
2.3.5 I think. Gingerbread.

I personally am not a far on the custom ROMs...I know some of them work really well, but I prefer the stock debranded ROMs...cant explain why but I just do...and I read that HTC actually said that Desire HD won't be getting Ice Cream Sandwich for sure. =/

I'm not sure how reliable this is though.
Current latest android version is 2.3.3 GB + Sense 2.1
Games would probably run smoother on the SGS since it has a better GPU, however most games still run smoothly on the DHD.
Please search before opening a new thread. This info is everywhere and doesn't need its own thread.
I bought the AT&T One X the day it came out. I ended up taking it back because of the Multitasking and SMS bug and the issue with receiving exchange mail.
Later, I missed it and decided to buy the International, Tegra version. For the most part, I have been liking it better this time around, but I wonder if I'm missing out. I have LTE in my area. I can live without that, but it's certainly nice.
I also don't necessarily NEED 32 gigs of internal memory, so that's a wash. For me, I wonder if the better performance and battery life on the S4 version are worth it. I'm contemplating sending my International back and taking the plunge on the AT&T version again. ROM Development isn't really crucial to me, either. I usually stay stock.
My question to you all is: Which do you prefer? Posted as a poll. I'd like to see which version you either have or plan on getting and why you think that's the better one.
I looked around and can't find any really good comparisons between the two. I only see the benchmark tests, which don't tell the whole story. There is also the battery, heat, gaming, etc.
Edit: I also find that the International version has Skydrive integration, where the AT&T version does not.
gaming is better on the T3 edition thanks to THD optimizations and quads
battery and temps are better on the s4 edition, thanks to the 28nm CPU
Personally i think we & the other phone makers are going to be surprised by the T3 One X when the drivers are sorted out to use the ICS kernel, don't forget at the present moment it is running on a Gingerbread kernel.

Is the ICS Kernel known to be much more power efficient? I find it hard to believe that the 'official' HTC One X doesn't have an ICS Kernel, while carrier-branded ones already do. I'm not doubting, I'm just saying that seems odd.
It's because Nvidia hasn't written drivers for their processor for kernel 3.x and Qualcomm has. The new Asus Transformer also has a Gingerbread kernel. If you check your software about screen the kernel version will be listed there. Under 3 means it's a Gingerbread kernel while over 3 is Honeycomb and ICS.
We'll likely get USB OTG with a 3.x kernel as it's natively supported. With 2.x kernels manufacturers had to backport it or write their own.
someone know if nvidia will release the driver for the community like qualcomm?
yes, but nobody knows when!

I can't compare the intl hox vs the att hox but I can compare the intl hox with the intl hos and I think the hos is much much smoother and responsive and (screen off) battery life is much better, I would have gotten the s4 version of the hox if it would have been available here in the netherlands
Hi all,
I am a LG G2x owner that foolishly bought the phone knowing it was a dual core phone at a cheap price. After exploring forums, I later found out LG never updates the device and there are coding problems so we will never get fully working ics/jb on it. Thankfully, there were no glaring hardware flaws.
Is there any software/hardware flaws that I need to know about before I buy one off of ebay? I know a bit about the wifi hardware issue. How many people are affected by it? I just don't want to be caught in a dead end phone with constant problems.
On another note how is the battery life?
Thanks guys.
No s-off....
I've had no wifi issues. Most phones have the JB update. I wouldn't hold your breath for anymore though. ROM development is pretty good. AOKP/AOSP have ironed out most bugs so you have lots of options there.
Battery life is on par for phones with similar screen size etc. It should easily get you through the day with "normal" use.

Do most people or minority have the WiFi issue? Is there any road blocks that would stop development? (Like driver stuff not hardware) for example the radio on g2x has weird coding or something that stops call audio to work in cm development.

Our phones are still semi-locked. We couldn't install SENSE roms without the firmware update from HTC, which was rolled out slowly and is limited to very specific regions. The majority of unbranded handsets and some branded have the latest firmware so are good to go.
AOSP/AOKP roms don't have this limitation, so we've been able to install them all along.
HTC releases their kernel source eventually, so I think we're OK on that front. We are still waiting on the JB kernel, however.
I think the wifi issue was more of a problem when people were installing the leaked JB firmware. It wasn't a final product and had a few issues, wifi being one of them. Now that the official firmware has been released, I haven't seen this issue so much.

The Taiwan phones got the official update first (it turned out to have issues).
A few weeks later the Asia WWE (world wide english) versions got a newer update that doesn't seem to have any issues followed by International WWE version.
Now India, Philippines, Egypt, Romania, Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong unbranded phones have updates.
The ones that are still waiting are carrier branded like H3G, Orange, Vodafone etc.
(There are some brilliant roms based off the official sense roms with a few tweaks here and there)

Just looked up what s-off meant.. I'm still a little confused. What types of ROMs are s-off and what are s-on? I didn't face these on the lg threads
Sent from my sexy G2x
S-On means that we can't flash boot.img files from recovery. We have to do it from fastboot. Generally, all except a special few are s-on.
We also don't have full access to parts of the phone like radio or hboot.
The issue with the Sense JB roms is that they were dependant on a new hboot, which had to be rolled out officially. This doesn't affect AOSP roms, it was only to do with a restriction HTC had on their Sense modifications.
As long as the phone you're buying isn't carrier branded, you will be able to flash just about everything. (you may need to update it first)

Custom roms that are modified from the sense roms require a certain hboot version. Hopefully the one you're getting is one that has the update rolled out.

Lol I wanted T 3 version and one x+is too expensive . I don't like the display on s3 and how hyped it was. I would have gotten optimusg but not much DEV support. The nexus 4 would have worked but overpriced on eBay. I'm on T-Mobile and don't use data so 4g doesn't bother Me. If I was to get data. I don't have any issues with battery running out. (I can get 1.5 days out of one charge) I don't do anything special like underclocking... Actually, I do use advanced power mod to reduce automatic brightness levels.
I think you'll only run into issues if you love playing games, or don't have a job and use your phone aaaaalll day.
