[Q] Choosing a ROM/Radio - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I own a Bell Desire Z (Canada). I'm new to rooting and I've been checking out this forums for a few days. I'm wanting to root my phone shortly and I'm wondering which ROM I should use.
My motivations for changing my ROM is mostly because I :
a) Can't stand the HTC skin anymore because it's waaaay too unresponsive
b) I want to get a more optimized OS
c) I want to increase my phone and mobile internet signals, if possible
I've came to the conclusion that EXT4 is the best recovery but I'm still confused about ROMs for Desire Z. How can I compare ROMs against each other ? For example, why is there so many different Andromadus ROMs? I read minicry was good, but I see the tests ones (JB if I'm not mistaken) and there's also Audacity, etc.
I don't want to lose features (GPS, Camera, Bluetooth). The cam is a little less important but I'd still rather keep it.
I'm also having a hard time understanding the radios "roms" (is it a rom too? I'd guess so). Is it a good idea to change it. If yes, what's the benefits, where can I find them for the Desire Z, are they the same for the G2, how can I know which are compatible with my carrier, etc. Is there any thread for up to date Desire Z radios?
Thanks a lot.

4ext is, in my opinion, the best recovery for our device; as for ROMs, it's best to just try them out for yourself. Cyanogenmod is the most one of the most widely used ROMs for a reason, it's solid and heavily supported however, there are many based off of CM that offer even better speed at the expense of eye candy.
As for radios (which aren't ROMs but basically device drivers), there is a thread that is stickied in the dev forum with all available radios. Updating your radio can offer better reception and better battery life but, it depends on your carrier and location as to which is best.

Since people on XDA are [often] tragically uninformed, I'll give you the scoop on ICS/JB ROMs specifically. I apologize in advance for being uninformed myself about the HTC Sense-based ROMs available. I gave up on Sense a long time ago
Since you seem a bit keen to know more about AOSP based ROMS, the two types of AOSP based ROMs available for our device are AOKP and CM9. Andromadus Audacity and the ROM titled "CyanogenMod 9 RC2" (currently) are both based as much on CM9 as possible. They use as many of the CM9 branches as possible filling in the missing pieces where necessary. Those missing pieces are device specific branches that CyanogenMod currently does not provide for our device. The ROM titled CM9 RC2 by jerl92 is as much unofficial CM9 as Andromadus Audacity. The only difference is that jerl92 named his ROM "CyanogenMod", and as such people are under the impression it's more CM9 than Andromadus Audacity, when that's simply not the case. Both ROMs use the Andromadus kernel by fyodor (as a base), as does the AOKP ROM by adamz667. That said, the Andromadus ROMs, jerl92's CM9 ROM and AOKP are the only ROMs for our device based on compiled Android source code.
As for the other Andromadus ROMs, the Test Builds are alpha Jelly Bean builds based on CM10 primarily put together by Flinny and the rest of the Andromadus dev team (though at this point mostly darkspadez, fyodor, Flemmard -- I've done very little myself w/ JB so far).
Andromadus Mimicry is Andromadus Audacity, which means it's CyanogenMod 9. The difference is I've branched off half a dozen branches and have tried to add features specific to our device as well as community requests on XDA/IRC. Mimicry will move to CM10/JB when it's matured enough to provide a ROM experience similar to what we've achieved with CM9/ICS.
As for radios, search XDA for the .19 radio (as it's typically called). Look up EdKeys' thread and flash the radio/rcdata package for .19 and be done with it. You only have to flash it once and the .19 radio works great on Bell/Telus/Rogers' networks.

Thanks a lot for clarifying all this, I wasn't aware of the how the branching worked for specific devices.
I get it you are the developer of the Mimicry branch and that's what I'll go with.

I still haven't got the time to root my phone but reading further I realized in the XDA wiki that the Clockwork Recovery was flash using a gfree command and passing an img file as a parameter. However, looking at 4ext recovery, I could only find a package installer (apk). How do should I flash the 4ext recovery then?
I was also wondering if there's any guide on how to install Mimicry? I've downloaded the 2 files (the actual image and gapps). I have absolutely no idea what to do with those files.
Thanks a lot!

You might have to use CWM during the root process but, after that you can download 4ext Installer and flash 4ext. As far as installing a ROM, you'd do that via recovery by selecting "install from zip file" (or whatever similar option is in the recovery you're using)

Hello, I will put here a few of my thoughts regarding your issue.
I am using clockworkmod recovery all the time and did not have any issues flashing/backup/restoring etc on my Desire Z, when you root you firstly end up using clockwork mod recovery, so you can as well stick to it - it does all you need. It text by text interface and it's to me - easy to use and clear. Once you have a rooted phone and you are able to boot into cwm recovery, you put a ZIP with your ROM on your SD, as well as your google apps for ICS, you navigate into clockworkmod's menu, press "install zip from SD card", find the ROM ZIP, and install. You do the same with gapps zip before you reboot. Simple as that.
Now for the ROMs. I personally am in favor of Andromadus Mimicry 1.4 ROM. It's the fastest, most complete (every device feature like camera/gps/etc works) Ice Cream Sandwich ROM out there, comes with a pre-installed memory optimizer script, so it's really really smooth and fast, it comes with a nice graphical and feature rich installer (similar to PC installers to be honest), you can manually chose which feature to install during that, and also is equipped with the .19 radio (which you also can chose upon installation), which boosted my GPS signal and my GSM signal by far. Seriously, this is to me the best ICS ROM out there for our Desire Z. It looks and feels great.

Are you stuck on the idea of using an ICS or JB ROM? I have tried Mimicry 1.4.0 and the JB test builds, as well as EliteMod ICS, but have settled for now on the the EliteMod CM7, and find it very good...fast, stable, all apps in working order, low battery usage. No, the available launchers are not quite up to Apex...but for me it's not about aesthetics, just functionality. There's a thread about it in the Android development section:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1246682
Flashing the .19 radio is easy and very good. It _is_ a separate step from ROM flashing...the files are downloadable from the EdKeys thread mentioned above...start reading here:

Rom manger's poor selection for G2/HTC Vision

Why does rom manager only support two different roms for the g2 but has a much larger selection on other phones such as the droid or evo? I would like a little more selection than a kernel, nightlies for one rom, and one sense based rom to choose from. Anyone have some insight to why this is?
Sent from my word hole to your ocular cavities via my CM7 G2 1.5ghz
I never use Rom Manager to flash any Roms, I personally like to flash new Roms from recovery and actually go thru the process of wiping and installing the Rom myself. As for your question of why it only supports 2 Roms, I'm really not sure why.
EDIT: If found this LINK that might explain why, it looks like the ROM Dev's need to go thru the process of getting there Roms on Rom Manager, and maybe some of them haven't or dont want to go thru the process.
Exactly what he said. Its up to the rom dev to put it in rom manager and work with koush.

Is there more ROMs on the premium version of ROM Manager or does it just make it easier to update?

Premium just gives you access to the nightlies, sadly ... start asking the devs to submit their ROMs

I also manually flash my roms, and wipe caches and battery stats, but its just handy to be able to download it like a cm7 nightly and be notified about rom updates. Then from there I take over and flash it myself. But would like to see a variety up there that's all. I would be more inclined to try different roms I think. I've only had cm6.1.1 and about 75 different cm7 builds, between gridlocks build and when they became official nightlies.

[Q] Gingerbread roms question ???

Hello, noob here, so be gentle. I want to install gingerbread on my desire but not sure which one to go for. What's the best one Oxygen 2.0 RC7, cyanogenmod cm7, etc.
Also one thing I'm not sure, when I go to the page of roms for the desire and click on the Gingerbread roms I'm given a list of different rom so I though I think Oxygen 2.0 might be the best so I might try this one but then I go to another page and it's about the rom and the download link is there but I have two options and not sure if I need to download only the first one (Oxygen 2.0 - RC7) cause below I also have this link to download Oxygen v1.0.4 (Froyo stable).
So do I download the first only, or both or oxygen v.1.0.4 only ?
And do i need to bother with any other files like radio, gapps...
I'm running 2.2 vodafone
Thank a lot for any advice.
What you like best is up to you.
Oxygen comes with Gapps, on Cyanogenmod you have to flash them yourself. If you go for Oxygen just download RC7, not the old froyo one, and flash it. No real need to change the radio but if you want you can change to the recommended one.
oh, i get it now. Yeah, will try oxygen as i want gapps. Exciting... Thanks a lot
Try Cm7 Its really getting stable by the day.. and it does not stop at rc7
I've had GingerVillain for a couple of weeks and I'd recommend looking at this too. Video camera working (although not yet at 720p), everything else works fine (wifi, gps, bluetooth). Included are lots of the cyanogenmod tweaks as well.
Very stable and runs well with eViollets 'battery efficient' kernel for longer battery life.
Personally I'd do some more reading up first on these.
Anything AOSP based is going to have boot-loop issues, video cameras are hacks at best etc.
I'm still running oxygen (latest test build) but it doesn't come without it's warnings.
Next couple of weeks should see the N1 OTA update and some fairly significant progress in GB for desire.
Excuse my ignorance but what is asop based ?
I also read somewhere that froyo is the last update for the desire. No more...
AOSP = Android Open Source Project...that's what all of these custom ROMs (CM7, Oxygen, etc.) are built on.
FroYo may be the last official update but, as you can see, the AOSP devs have Gingerbread running on it so you will see support for the Desire as long as the hardware supports it.

[Q] The FASTEST DHD ROM?

Hi guys,
What is, in your opinions, the fastest ROM for DHD, Sense or nonsense? I'm currently using Virtuous Unity 2.35 which is quite fast, but I'm wondering if there is anything faster.
Also important to me is battery life.
i will say...ARHD 5.2.6........---almost 2 days of battery life with MY regular usage......
Well if For Sense roms You can Try the leedroid
and android revolution hd
For no sense of course cyanogenmod
Remeber to always wipe before installing a new rom
Not always its necessary but for a clean and fast install
I'm using RCMix 3D bliss with sense 3.5 from capy, running very well until now, just BT don't turn up
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
hydrogen mod does it all for me. blazing fast, battery life can be great depending on kernel and its lightweight. cm7 - crap. you can feel the difference imho

On CM7 camera shoots video best
No jerks!
Im also running RCMix 3D bliss with sense 3.5 from capy, i think it is running really well and its running pretty smooth.
Most non sense roms are pretty smooth and fast, while every sense rom i've used has been slightly choppy - especially with the app drawer. (Installing a custom launcher fixes it, but it kinda defeats the purpose of using a sense rom)
I would recommend pretty much any cyanogen or miui based rom for speed. (Scrolling homescreens is much smoother, and benchmarks are around 1.5x higher (with quadrant standard - most sense 3.0 roms get around 1.5k @ no o/c, while rd-miui and hydrogen both get 2.2ish), but there actually isnt much of a difference in gaming - laggy games such as fast five lag (it pretty much runs on the same FPS on most ROMs i've used) regardless of what rom)
The only problem with no-sense roms imo is the lack of a proper camcorder - i have yet to see a camcorder with touch to focus support
I must say the perfect ROM doesn't exist. RCMix is somewhat acceptable, ARHD and Leedroid are very good ROMs for day to day use, but now I'm stuck with Virtuos Unity, which does the job flawlesly regarding smoothness, battery life and so on.
In the end, you must decide what's the best ROM for you
as far as i have seen, the best rom has to be determined by you, whether you want looks, or just speed..
i have tried many different roms, and they all have their ups and downs...
Stock Looking ROM
at the moment i have been using Android Revolution 5.2.6, and just upgraded to 6.1.0 with Sense3, this rom is veryfast and of course has Sense3 and has little battery consuption, i am very happy with it..AR is very simple and looks like a stock rom, but with a few tweaks..
TB and Synergy ROMs also are good, if you looking for stock look..
Good Looking ROM
but if you want some "eyecandy", try Coredroid.. version 7.5 looks awesome, but drains abit of battery, version7.6 has sense2.1...and version8 has sense3 both are very stable and good on battery..
RCMix KINGDOM ROM is also impressive and looks good, but i have yet to test it..
Simple
if you want real simplicity i would go for CyanogenMod Roms, they have good battery performance as they dont have HTCSense...
but also remember to use the recommended "Radio" for the ROM you install, as this can have a huge impact on your ROMs battery and performance..
what i have done is purchased an app called BootManager (ROOT required), and it allows you to have your main ROM, as well as 4 other ROMs, you can install on your SDcard, this way you can install multiple roms and test them out to see what you personally prefer..
Personally no ROM has even come close to having all the features I would like until recently. None were as fast or as smooth as I would have liked.
Then along came the 2.3.4 and 2.3.5 releases. Every one of these I have used (they have all been Sense ROMs) has been graphically smooth and fast to use/respond. I'm loving the rotation animation in Sense 3.5 - A small feature that I have wanted for a very long time.
Battery life seems to also be improved since I recently flashed Radio_12.62.60.27_26.13.04.19_M and it's matching RIL.
- If you want a ROM with Sense then check out ARHD.
- Want something that's super fast and light? Go with CM7
- Want something that's super fast and light, and has eye candy? Go with MIUI
hi guys,
first off im not very good when it comes to this sort of thing, ive jailbroken an iphone thats about it.recently i bought a dhd and it has virtuous unity 1.31 and android 2.3.3,im happy with this its working well but reading about all these roms and how easy people are saying it is to change them i wanted to try something different,i like sense and i would like something that looks really good, what would you recomend and more important how do i do it,thanks and sorry for the long post!
- Find a ROM
- Download the ROM
- Copy the ROM (the Zip-file) to the SD card
- Open ROM Manager
- Hit "Reboot into Recovery
- Choose "wipe data/factory settings" (you only need to do this if you are flashing a new ROM. Not when you're updating)
- Choose "wipe cache partition"
- Go to "advanced" and choose "wipe dalvik cache"
- Press "Go back"
- "Install zip from sdcard"
- "choose zip from sdcard"
- Find the ROM Zip you downloaded
Wait for it to finish then hit "Reboot". Now wait for it to boot up, and voila! You're done.
thanks alot for the quick reply, your instructions seem very straight forward, will i lose my contacts and pictures and so on?and is there any way i could mess the phone up if i do it wrong?
Yes you will. So back it up before you start. Use Titanium Backup or something. Just remember that everytime you do a full wipe you'll lose everything. You won't lose anything when you wipe cache partition and dalvik cache
That's great thanks, one more thing I've noticed 2.3.4 and2.3.5,if the ROM I choose is for one of these will I have to update first or will the ROM include it so I will only have to flash once?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
You'll only need to flash once. If the ROM is 2.3.5 then it's 2.3.5. If you flash a ROM that's 2.3.4, then you'll get 2.3.4.
Edit: If you flash a 2.3.4 ROM and want 2.3.5 then you'll have to flash the new ROM and wipe the phone again. If the ROM you're using updates from 2.3.4 to 2.3.5 you don't need to wipe everything but it's better to do it so you won't get any weird bugs or anything like that.
Currently ARHD is the fastest with the official sense 3 base

Why several CM10 thread ?

Hi,
I'm considering switching on HTC one X, and so to install cm10 on it but as i read the forum, i'm wondering : what are the differences between this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1786696 and this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1784185 ?

I might be wrong but this is what i think
The 1st link you posted is managed by the CM developers, the second link is Tripndroid who based his/her/their rom on the base of the CM developers rom. Basically adding and removing tweaks that this person/team likes and dislikes
If your considering rooting and installing a custom rom. I can recommend the 1st link been using their roms for more than a month now and it's very good rom. If there is anything about sense that you like and will miss try the Sense roms. (Viper and ARHD) are the two major ones that i looked into, before settling on CM10.

hi there just adding to the above post. the first rom is developed with an ultimate goal of becoming the official CM rom, and is ready for everyday use soo far from my experience. The second one is Tripndroid, and he adds his own tweaks as far as i know. however i havent used his ROM yet to know for sure.

Hi there, I am running the ROM from the first post and it's brilliant. I have tried the second one and found it had quite a few bugs and was not nearly as finished as the first ROM. I am busy downloading alpha 5 now to try and am sure it will be just as great as the rest of his updates have been.
Thought I would give my info based on user experience of both ROMs. Also depends on what you looking for; quick ROM or fancy looking, awesome features or a stripped out version.
Well thanks guys, i think i'll go for the TeamNDVRu when i receive my phone, but still waiting september to see if it's worth it or not.
And what about the known issues ?
- Occasional soft-reboots with GPS On + Facebook ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...postcount=2184 )
- WiFi direct doesnt work
- MHL output is rotated incorrectly to portrait in horizontal mode (but workaround added since alpha 8 for hw decoded videos/youtube. Use bsplayer from playstore, almost all videos play with it in correct rotation in hwoverlay)
- No FM radio app in ROM. But Spirit FM works from market (it's commercial!)
- USB storage copies slower than normal
- Some paid apps loses settings/acconts due to this android jellybean problem: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=34880 Solution is to backup with Titanium Backup and restore to internal memory, not to sd

Some of them will only occur if you have special need for something. (e.g. wifi direct)
Some of them don't occur for everyone. (facebook+gps reboot)
None of them are really a huge concern if you are willing to try jelly bean. And for most of them there is a workaround, fix given in the text you quoted. I have a jelly bean rom installed and I have to say that I don't really feel any negative impact by those known bugs/issues. But do note, that most of these ROMs are not as stable as the 4.0.4 ROMs like ViperX.
I have been using tbaldens ROM and it has been quite good. The ones by trip I have found to be a bit unstable.

Snagged a bargain.

So saw a DHD come up on eBay for.. very little money.
Its already running a custom rom - Nexus 5 Experience ROM apparently, I cannot find it anywhere on XDA so I'm assuming its called something else or its on a different site.
I'm planning on installing CM on it anyway so thats no issue.
Now I have a few questions -
I've had a HTC One in the past, and from what I remember S-OFF and a certain HBOOT were a requirement, is the DHD the same? From what I can find S-OFF Isn't a requirement to install custom ROMs, but I'll need a goldcard? Is that correct?
Obviously with it being a single core clocked at 1Ghz I'm not expecting anything like the HTC One, however is it possible to get a decent overclock? I've seen a few threads with people running 1.1 - 1.2 Ghz... has anyone pushed it any higher to see what the CPU can really do?
Thats all really... should be here monday.. looking forward to having another android device to play with.
Nexus 5 Experience ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2632012
Project is closed due to OP. Last time i've seen him active with Desire HD with his new project named "Gimme-A-Break". And by far the most Stable and Slimmed CM11 ROM till date. I've used all his builds and very nice dev.
Now to use Custom ROM you need to have nothing else require than rom.zip file itself and appropriate GApps. Since you received device with custom rom on it. It's practically doesn't require anything else regarding rooting or making it S-OFF.
If your hboot is unlocked(S-ON) you may still able flash custom rom on it. Just bare in mind that after every flash of rom you need to flash boot.img of that rom, which you'll find in that folder.zip, Also try looking for latest recoveries and rom of you choice.
GApps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2397942
Due to BaNKs is out, PA GApps has taken it's place.
Overall WELCOME to never dying world of Desire HD.
