[SUGGESTION] Rules of XDA - About xda-developers.com

When I joined XDA on 21st April this year, I too hadn't read the rules and ended up posting warez two days later for which I received an infraction. Then I became aware and read the rules. Spammers don't generally spam intentionally. They just don't care to read the the rules or the stickied topics (about 90% of 'em). I have a suggestion that might reduce a lot of spammers (only my opinion).
Every person before registering SHOULD acknowledge the rules. Like whenever we install any software on PC, we have to accept certain terms of agreement during installation. So just before the completion of registration, the rules should be laid down before them and they have to click on the "I accept" button. Many of them won't care to read, but some will. They then might become aware of the rules of XDA and post accordingly. This way, noobs won't be able to say things like "I didn't know this was wrong" or "I didn't know these rules". This might result in the reduction of spammers, and the stress on the moderators will be reduced.
Just my suggestion guys!

My opinion is that I don't think it will make a difference to be honest.
I say this because, the biggest lie told on the internet is that someone has read the terms and conditions. Probably 95% of people, at the lowest, will actually read the rules/Ts & Cs.
I think the way we currently have it, where the forum rules are pinned to the top of each forum is better, because this way, whenever someone is scouring the forums they'll see them there. Granted, it doesn't mean the person will actually read them, but it's more likely if they're constantly there.

I have to agree, the only way to actually force somebody to read the rules is to add a test into the registration process based on them. I'm not sure how feasible that is though....
On another note, it's good to see somebody learn from their mistake and try to prevent others from doing the same. Kudos to you sir.

That actually sounds good. Maybe a few (3-5) simple questions. If anything, people would be forced to search first and read even a little bit (which could actually help). I'd gladly take that test if you guys would implement it.

Could always sandbox new registrations until the rules have been registered as read.

I too mean it to stay that way only.....just a little bit addition of introducing it during the registration process....then they might come to know the true purpose of this site and its members.....

Maybe something that doesn't test everything, a question like
"What number was the rule saying that you must not post warez in any forum?"
Then even if they didn't read that rule or still don't when looking for the number, the question says it. You could also change the wording slightly to force the user to read through the rules to find that specific question

[Q] Alternative to 10-post rule?

Instead of 10 postings, how about asking the new user to answer a developer-level question, before granting posting privilege to developer forums?
e.g. What is the name of the Virtual Machine used by Android? etc.
Should I suggest other similar questions?

I have considered this before, but the issue is how we add this into vBulletin in a non intrusive manner... I guess a quiz to get access to a non "new member" group would do the trick though...
I wondered about that myself. As good as that would seem, what about the people that are not really into developing, just love the work which other developers do. That would be unfair to people like them.

Well, implement both rules then. Do one or the other. I personally don't do a lot of developing, but sysadmin type stuff (how I love Linux ) and something like that question could be found using a bit of *cough* googleing *cough*. I mean its only 10 posts, its not like its gonna kill you. I got that in less then a day.
My 2 cents.

The 10 post rule is pretty hard for someone like me. I love certain mods, and am a developer of embedded software. I really only have a few forums I would like to post in, but I'm required to make other posts I could care less about just to post to topics I care about.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
there are many ways to gain 10 posts without spamming.
developers that want to develop here shouldnt have any issues answering 10 questions of noobs in the Q&A section or find a general thread that is related to you or some of your interests and ask some questions or share your experiences with that subject.
it is really easy to get 10 posts.
and you are 4 away...
Still, the 10 post limit is quite annoying and .. i'm still unable to post on the dev forums.
completely agree ...
it should actually be increased to 25 posts IMO
10 is too little
the correct place to post are in Q&A or General of each section
DEV is only for actual coders (programmers)
While I agree that the case can be made for 10 posts being a small amount, the problem is the sheer amount of people posting. I am unable to check XDA during the day, so most questions that are ones I would answer are already answered. The devs are good at that. Also, the "find something to post about " exactly the problem. I could care less about what case is better, or what skin looks good, or whatnot. Weeding through all the fluff is exhausting. Especially after a long day if development at work.

I agree, I am constantly moving threads out of Dev from users in the 20 post range. If only we could implement some kind of redirect to the rules when when someone under 10 post count attempts to post in Dev, or even a redirect to 12anons 10 post explained
The 10 post rule needs to become stringent IMHO.
Or even a quiz to determine the level of experience

I'm sure they mean for mobile platforms. That is what this forum is for, right?
Still -- ask me anything about Mumps and I'll answer it! And the first person who knows what Mumps is without searching the internet gets a cookie.
Another problem is if I've been a member for a certain amount of time, it should be a factor. I've been following these threads since my touch pro 2 days but never posted. Now when I need to post, I have to go through this initiation to even begin posting. And on to of that o have to wait five minutes between each one? Lol.

Can we please have any alternative method, I'm a developer myself who specifically registered to post a reply in one of the threads over there and it's incredibly annoying that I have to find some ways to hunt for 10 other threads and post something before being able to do so!
I do agree that it's a good thing to have some limitations, especially on opening new threads, but surely there must be a better way to grant access to just simple replies.
Does being in the top 1% for reputation on Stackoverflow count?
How about "Using Paint, point to where the Search button is."

Not trying to be mean or anything just trying to help answer your question a bit better so the trolls don't eat this up, as these types of threads always seem to just turn into to flame wars and *****ing. I'm pretty sure I know who you are talking about and it has been discussed several times in other threads. I guess they may have been closed, now that I think about it, either way i'd recommend just a pm to dec3dace (I think thats how you spell it) he's our new epic only mod. He's pretty good and should get back to you.

Thank you, I searched, but its very possible I just missed them, though the thread was locked at 5am or so this morning.
Pretty much just looking for an official comment, not really a discussion.
In a perfect world, a mod would post up the "why" then lock this thread
Another developer, how many have been banned thus far?
And maybe thats why I can't find the rom I'm looking for. I guess it dosnt matter. So this seems like a friendly place?
I am a little surprised because I had heard he had talked things out with them. The Roms are all over, it'd suck if the forum went empty or shifted somewhere else.
I heard his thread was mistakenly closed then he cussed out the mod, then I think it was reopened then he got banned for the cus out.

Thanks.
I wanted to know if it was a XDA Rules issue, (not a concern) or an issue with the software he posted (major concern)
Wish mods would just post a little note letting the community know the basics.
Don't need all the details, but a basic, a XDA rule was broken, or there was an issue with sw, or some such, which would be hugely helpful.

Understanding Multi-Windows

I just flashed a TW rom yesterday with the 4.1.2 release, and now have multi-window.
The thing is, it only has about 10 or so apps in it. How do I add more apps to it?

Unfortunately, and it has been noted in many other threads on different forums about the search function on XDA......:
The "Search" function on this forum is one notch up from a shot in the dark and many users have been chastised "Use the search before".....
That's so uns, man! using the search is just about a waste of time!
Google search from OUTSIDE the forum finds stuff better than the "search" of this board... Those individuals that spend their life on this board and know where everything is, and where everything "should be posted" need to develop a new life.... Playing in the streets is a good start!

You're both missing the point here, and it is prolly my fault. The point I was trying to make, is that the "SEARCH" engine really needs to be somehow upgraded so that it actually finds what is being searched for. I appreciate the good intentions of giving a user a link to locate anything, but adding the "use search" after that given tidbit detracts woefully from the good intentions. Seems like a scolding after a cookie is offered to a child. Give the info, and reserve the "use......." comments SURE IS A MORE PLEASANT APPROACH, don't you agree? That makes for a much more pleasant forum attitude and makes for a warmer atmosphere in this forum. Same with when a user posts a question in the "wrong" place, it's easy for Moderators to MOVE the thread and just leave it at that... No need to reprimand with a comment of "post in the right place" etc.... We are all in the same boat here, and are or maybe it would be nice to think we are in a concerted effort to have all of us come out with a gain..... So, please come back in from the street, and it's a good thing there was no traffic!
Sorry, was not trying to offend anyone, but make a small point.

You know id have to agree. At least with stating "wrong thread" or "search". I always see the mods post their own warning when they move the thread. So why waste space with a redundant post when its easier to report and not take the job away from the mods. As a hint. I search in google with these key words " xda and my search terms. " that way If I'm specifically looking for something on xda I get only xda related searches.

It's true that Google search works better than XDA search.
I don't report things every time cause the mods have a life too and considering almost every thread created has been discussed before, they'd be busy for ever. I can usually find 5 threads already made for a new subject by searching... nothing was confused with your last post, you said people should have things handed to them and not reminded of the rules, and then to go play in the streets if you know where things are in this forum lol. His question was in the Dev thread only 5 post back from the top, he simply didn't look that time.

Have to agree about search button not working as expected here. I sure do use google to search on xda, lol.
I too really hate when mods ask you to "search" after you already searched but most times people dont search before asking usually. I do understand the point about rules, but, man, I have a couple of devices, very common devices, which threads could contain thousands of post and most times search wont bring a relevant answer. I end up reading a whole lot. In the end I would find my answer, or not.
What I mean is that is easier to ignore a stupid question if you dont want to help that helping and then telling to search, so in a way you are telling them lazy without really know if they used the defective search button.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
At the same time they are creating a thread thats going to the top thats sometime useless and we might not spot someone else who really needs the help.basically its a large community with every phone available, you have a pouplar phone meaning you better get ready to read a lot through pages comes with the territory. Use Google and to be honest if m3tg or anyone else decides to help someone that person can choose to say what he wants ,bottom line this thread should die we can go back and forth forever.

I search fine, I don't know if I have more patience or what but when I have a question I find it. It does need work but not that hard to try 3 to 4 different key word combinations, and than post what you tried to search for and an elaborate explanation of what you want. Not this thread, but a lot of threads go like this
Need help
How do I root.
Those get posted all the time, and that's just ridiculous. Most are around the same context, "flashed this rom, now it won't boot" or " what's the best rom" those are the most common, and I've made resource guides for a reason, and a couple q&a threads, they could use more work on the OP I know, but it's a great place for people to start asking those questions, there are plenty of stickies for people to not make mistakes and read before having a brick, or making lazy new threads. Simple as that, that's why mods ask for them ti search. Again none of this is towards Kamau54, just in general towards the whole threads "not searching" thing.
@executioner I wanted to see if anyone would actually report a useless thread, lol. People don't have to be a RC to report useless threads that should be dead, they just like to chime in about it.
Now to enjoy my day off of work and have Sunday Funday.

This is a legitimate question for the q/a forum...if they choose to lock it that is their prerogative. I have never made any trouble on this site...there is little reason. This post is not meantt to be inflammatory, I just genuinely want to know if XDAS part in our quest for root is over or not...I am not breaking any forum rules in posting this.
So do people still plan to work on the note 4 using this forum or is there somewhere else I should be focusing my attention to?

Because of the nonsense that goes on in root threads, no developer in their right mind will post any efforts in one of the threads in General. This is why developers have taken their efforts off of XDA and in private chats...and now no one learns anything here.
And no, you are not breaking rules by asking but you opened a thread where all the non-helping people from the other threads will have a place to go. So I am sure they will be quite proud to post something here to get this locked too.

As Kenny stated here. This is the best course to take. We know most of you guys think we are being jerks, but the bottom line is that thread is/was and would continue to be out of hand. Just because that thread is locked for now, does not mean devs are going to stop collaborating and find a method.

Whoa, excuse me . I read your post and found no value in it. I merely made a statement (not even remotely regarding your profound post.) We paid a substantial amount of money for this phone. I also paid for the stupid XDA premium app to support the XDA community. I also have contributed much money to many devs in the past for previous phones I've owned. I believe I have a right to be kept in the know. Whether the know is what exploit developers are using to find root or useless banter from idiotic foreigners and newbs who have no idea what is going on is completely regardless. It's a public forum. The thread was posted in the general section. There was no warning in the title that it was a "Dev thread only." It wasn't just the idiots who were posting dumb comments, it was a lot of the ATT Note 4 Community that would post 4-5 replies after the "are we there yet?" posts that got the thread shut down. I enjoyed the thread, I learned a lot about exploits that I wouldn't have ever thought to research on my own. It was purely entertainment for me and it was taken away because the moderation can never handle anything properly.

Thanks for the boost of support from the Mod team. Did you have to watch a video before becoming a mod? Cheers.

Actually yes we do. And please read those rules you so reverently talked about. Having more than one account is a rule violation.

Man I usually don't post but **** I am so glad your gone. Best wishes
Wow...well you were right about having a place for people to cry...I was genuinely looking for a place to go keep learning and hopefully obtaining root...if you want to stop and close this thread I approve. No need for mods and users to be fighting and disrespecting eachother. I will continue my pursuit in other threads this one is finished for me.
Closed at OP's request.

Have a great day!

So no one collaborate on root now.

Looks like root threads are getting shut down due to negative comments. Well they are a part of forums. Go look on everyone. You have to take the good and bad XDA is no different. I've been a member for 7 years and to see such a vital thread shut down makes me think the moderator is a tmobile user trying to derail us. No thread is perfect at all. Are the moderators helping with root or just using their opinions on posts to say whether or not they are valid. So hundreds and hundreds of users are dependent upon the thoughts of 1 or 2 people whether or not a thread is valid? Take the good with the bad people. Your not going to change anything except maybe losing people on XDA as they go to Android central or anything other forum. I'll probably get an infraction or banned but I'm staying an opinion just like forums were meant for along with information and facts.

I can understand the ppl working hard to achieve what we all want( root) getting Pissed off about useless coments. I have to say the good outweighed the bad And was harsh to shut it down because of a few ppl trolling or have had nothing to contribute to the thread. Why do we all suffer because of very few ppl?

I PM'ed the moderator staff about this and was assured the current lock is only temporary. They also acknowledged the concerns you all are expressing. I would guess it is a TOS violation to copy & paste the private conversation here, but do know that they were not only appropriate in their response but also highly supportive of reinstituting the thread. However, there have been major issues with people not following instructions and posting off-topic and inappropriate messages. If you want to see the thread open back up, perhaps a better approach would be to do what I did and write a polite, formal request to the moderator staff rather than post threads complaining about their actions. The latter will only tick them off but lots of requests done in a professional, persistent but considerate manner is more likely to push them in the direction of unlocking that thread.
I understand your guys thoughts but this isn't the way to go about. Us people ready to do what we can with root just have to stay quite and wait say nothing.....
Idk if this will help out getting to root but there is a hidden menu in the dailer "*#0*#" to access camera functions. Idk if it would be easier to use that to access the exploit that was discovered because i don't dig that deep when it comes to tinkering with android but that's what I came cross.
1156 posts, what 100 useless, I was following the good and skipping the bulls#i+ it's not that hard... Common sense... No one has any anymore...
I hope it's not out of line to comment about this, but I would really appreciate the ban being lifted, too. I get that there were a lot of bad posts happening, and I understand why the moderators were forced to lock the thread, but please lift it soon. Developers were just making progress when you guys shut all conversation down. :/
Awesome way to stop development! Good job xda admins way to in force your dictatorship and stop the delopement of the GN4 since we didn't have enough trouble already
Ok, I know everyone is feeling distressed, I as well, once learning that a "Highly Productive Developement Thread" was closed down due to what reason(s) the moderator posted.
All that aside,
I have emailed the Administrator of XDA with my sincere expressed concerns reflecting to the "Loss of Developement" for not one, but several possible Samsung Note Variants. (I will not disclose or discuss the email.) Based on past experience with the person I emailed, I truly feel that person(s) will take the upmost and sincerest actions to best decide how to best handle this type of situation.
In the meantime,
I would ask that you Please keep this thread POSITIVE and Productive, and to to refrain from making "negative comments." Nothing will be gained from that except the locking of another thread...
If you truly want root,
Let's make it happen.
However go about it the professional & correct way.
Please let my post, be the last post,
So others will possibly read it and understand what it is we are trying to achieve. My sincerest thanks.
Developers don't need no stinkin' signature!
If I've been able to help you, please hit the "Thanks" button.
Most people with skills to root the note 4 aren't talking about it/brain storming on XDA. There is pretty good money involved, you can bet stuff isn't getting shared in a public forum. my last two devices that took a while to root were completely silent in the forums. not a peep till it was tested and ready to roll.
Profess = claim openly but often falsely that one has (a quality or feeling).
Profession = an open but often false declaration or claim.
Lets go about it the professional & often false way. Ehh?

It's because a bunch of stupid people have to put their two cents in where it's not needed. The thread should have been strictly for discussing the exploits and code needed for rooting, not a bunch of "OMG CANT WAIT FOR R00T!" and whatever other nonsense bull**** that was being posted.
Because of a few idiots who need to have their keyboards taken away, we can't have nice things. This thread should be locked. Next person who makes a thread about root, or about the previous root thread should get banned.
</rant off>
One thing Xda admins need to learn is that there are people of all nationalities and ages on here. To think you're going to stop people from posting useless comments is stupid. You're not fixing anything XDA admins if anything you're making it worse. Don't punish thousands for something WE cannot control. There will always be people posting stupid crap get over it. The developers that were actually working on things probably didnt even notice the extra crap.

Also thanks to Xda admins blocking our root progress page people are pulling money out of the root bounty. Xda admins = awesome job
Seriously?
And you wonder why the threads are closed!
