Just bought a GSIII yesterday, and my friends have been complaining about my texts coming in late, and me getting their texts late as well. I'm running the latest CM10, but this has been a constant issue with me and Android phones.... ever since I had the EVO 3D on Sprint, to the Xperia Play/Xperia S on AT&T, to the One X, to the GSIII, I've always had an issue with receiving texts hours late on those phones. That's across two different carriers, across five different phones, from stock ROMs to heavily modded ROMs, and from AT&T's 3G APN to its LTE APN. However, using an iPhone for the past few weeks (before switching to the GSIII), I received EVERY text the second it was sent, and all my texts delivered on time. Note this is with the exact same SIM I just put in my GSIII. So... why? Why is this happening? Please, someone tell me... why is it that the only phone that will receive texts on time is the iPhone? That literally makes zero logical sense.
bump.
still an issue with me everyonce in a while. anyone have any more info?
The area coverage where you live? Data speeds.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Wouldn't be data speeds cause sms doesn't require data
The iPhone uses data to send text messages between iPhones. hence why some messages are blue, and other messages are green when you send to other types of phones. This could be one reason you had zero lag with iPhone if the majority of your friends have iPhone as well.
If you are experiencing this across phones and carriers it is a problem with your area. you would need to contact your current carrier for a resolution. Your phone isn't the problem they are.

Read this thread in AT&T's support forums and see if it is what you are experiencing. I had same issues and AT&T put me through many hoops, new sim, new phone, etc.

I put in the ST APN settings, letter for letter, on my GSM Gnex according to the insert that came with the sim. I am using the ATT sim, fyi.
For some reason, when I go to any page in Chrome, the page will not render correctly... for instance, on yahoo.com, it will only show a white background with blue links, no pictures... kind of like HTML 1.0 back in the early 90's if that makes since.
Now, if I do a webpage refresh, sometimes the entire page will load correctly, some times it's back to blue links. This happens about 75% of the time, even on several apps like facebook.
I have NO issues on any wifi network I am connected to.
I am in a HSPA+ area with full bars. Same issues seen from southern Ohio to Philly on a business trip I went on last week.
I did not see any issues while on AT&T post paid or on the Tmo 4G $30.00 plan.
Any ideas? Thanks guys.:good:
Unfortunately no answers as to why but the problem does exist. I have had the issue for a few weeks now on ST Att SIM.

Straight Talk is still having some major problems. I've been experiencing the same thing.
I've been having issues like that as well. And for the post several days my data has been very unreliable. I often have to turn it off and on a few times to get it to work, if it even starts working. Never had issues like this before, and I've been on Straight Talk for a few months now. Hopefully it's just a temporary thing. I'm in the Canton, OH area btw.
So far my new service(two weeks old) has been flawless. Signal could be better in spots but that's any cell provider you can name. Never had the problems you are having now. Just checked Yahoo, working fine! Still yahoo though, so not sure why you'd care! hehe
I too am having issues with it switching from umts to hspa constantly, have any of you called customer service?

I'm on an ATT straight talk card and I was wondering if anyone got double texts from people on other att networks. I'm trying to text this girl but my phone makes it seem like she has a speech impediment.
I'm on tmobile prepaid and my gf is on att and we both receive multiple texts from each other. Her texts more often then mine. I don't know which service is at fault, but I assume att is the issue.

Some times I'll get like 8 texts. But I think it's when coverage weak or switching from edge to h. I'm in TMobile and this is from all other carriers. I had this happen when I was on att too.
This has happened to me on VZW, but I was never able to determines a cause.
Since I purchased the phone in October I figured it was normal to NOT be able to talk and use your data... Wifi worked fine but I could never browse when I am on a call (4g etc), which was frustrating while trying to use maps. My phone was literally the first in the door at my store.
This was pre-root, and even now after Root and custom (Jedi Rom). Other than that my phone works flawless, not problems ever.
Now I may have to flash to stock rom, Reset my counter and unroot my device (such a hassle)
I am on the Monthly 4G plan with T-mo ($60)
Suggestions?
Any basic tests should I run?
Can Technical service tell I am rooted if I call them up?
Are you sure you're not on EDGE?
EDGE doesn't support simultaneous voice and data.

This is the first time I've ever heard of this since I've been able to talk and use data even since the G1 days. I thought the only one who couldn't do that was Verizon.
Are you sure you were on EDGE back in those days?
Do a little Google search, there's hundreds of pages saying the same thing. There's even an ATT FAQ addressing it.

+1 been doing it since the mt3g phone after the g1 if you don't know lol I think its funny seeing those lame at&t iPhone commercials talking about surfing the web and talking at the same time... Been doing it for years you guys are a little behind lol
Was able to do this back on my g2x, usually be able to use Internet for couple minutes while on a call and then I guess the network would eventually "catch me" and it would stop working..

Not to be a jerk but made me laugh lol we've had this for many many years.... I'm sure it worked with the g1 can't confirm cause I didn't own it but it worked with the original mytouch3g basically a g1 with no keyboard. Been talking on speaker and googling at the same time for years... Can even use the multi window and talk and surf if you wish to do it that way ...
I always thought the difference was in the technology the carrier used,
it was my impression that companies that relied on CDMA technologies, such as sprint, verizon, boost, etc, couldn't, but GSM companies could, i.e. at&t, t-mobile.
either way, if it never worked for me, i would just flash the stock rom available in the forums and hop on the phone to have a nice long conversation about what we would do to rectify this situation.
You're all missing the point, all the phones you're talking about are 3g phones, Even the venerable old G1 was 3g.
3g phones can talk and data at the same time as long as the data is on the 3g network. If you're in an area without any data service available besides edge, you will not be able to talk and do data simultaneously, whatever phone you have. That's true on any GSM network, unless you have some kind of phone that has multiple radios.
The reason the original non 3g iPhone could not do voice and data simultaneously was because it didn't have 3g. It was an edge only device. Nothing to do with being AT&T or anything like that. CDMA phones have some more limitations until the recent inclusion of multiple radios in the device, which I think started with the Thunderbolt.
The original iPhone was an amazing device for its time, big screen, no keyboard. I was happy to have one for years, but when the Nexus One came out Android has pulled studly ahead and never looked back.

Yup. Even the g1 that I had could talk and use data at the same time. I was excited when I got the g2 because it had 4g ...until I realized the location I had moved to only got edge. Lol.

Yes we know we are talking about 3g phones android had it right to begin with unlike apple... I did though have the first iPhone till I dropped it and half the screen decided to stop working... Lame crap! all in all we could talk and surf web for a long time and when phones were made with only edge there was not many devices that had worthy web browsing capabilities anyway. Don't think I'll ever go to CDMA I enjoy my sim cards and not relying on calling customer service to switch phones...

You're not being a jerk I could care less everyone's entitled to their own opinion. Other then my GS3 I've only ever used iPhones with TMobile, and running on edge I know for a fact that never worked because I've tried it. This is the first time I tried it since I've been away from the iPhone

The G1, the first Android powered phone, wasn't released until 15 months after the first iPhone; it better have done things better with that much longer time to market, don't you think? iPhone users were happily using large screen, thin form factor phones for a very long time while Android was just a dream. Your also not up to speed on VZW's current phones it seems. While they do use CDMA for the voice, the data side of the phone is GSM (LTE), and you no longer need to call customer service to switch your phone as long as you're on an LTE device, which all their newer phones are. I routinely swap SIMs among multiple VZW phones, it works just like GSM, number and account go with the SIM, not the phone.
You're still missing the point. The original post complains of not being able to talk and data simultaneously. I asked if he was sure he wasn't on EDGE, then the thread devolved into a bunch of "iPhone and AT&T sucks because my old 3G phone has always been able to do voice and data simultaneously." Totally irrelevant, even if you think iPhone and AT&T suck, because it has nothing to do with the original problem. Great, your old G1 did talk/data same time, how does that help the OP fix his problem?
As for all the Apple/AT&T hate from others, whatever blows your skirt up, I guess. AT&T has its faults, and its wins. Their network is a hell of a lot better at pushing a signal into every large building/mall/structure I go to here in Los Angeles' suburbs; most of them I get ZERO signal with my T-Mo Note 2. Verizon beats both, you pay a premium, but if you need a signal, VZW is best at getting it to you. I have high-end active phones on all three networks, and often do side-by-side compares. In my office building in Santa Clarita I have to use my VZW GS3 as a hotspot to get data flowing to my Note 2!
Re: the iPhone original being EDGE only. As I recall, in 2006 when the iPhone was being developed, and in 2007 when it was launched, 3G was only in a few major markets; releasing a 3G phone then would only have benefited a lesser portion of the customer. Apple tends to play it safe on a newer, more power hungry technologies to save battery. It's a design choice that most of their customers are happy with.
Anyways, back to the original post, technical support can tell you're on a different ROM if they ask questions about software details from the About screen and they don't match what the non-root phone should have.
I just moved and have been notice a lack in signal on my Note 3 and plan on trading a friend Friday for his G3 and was curious how everyone's signal has been affected switching to the G3.
Service isn't horrible but there are certain rooms I drop calls. Yet my family members with their iPhone 4 have no problems making calls everywhere I struggle.
Of course I have Verizon and different carriers may see different results. But just want to get an idea if I should worry about having worse service and not being able to use my G3 at my new house.
Thanks for your help!!

I have Sprint, and just switched from a note 3 to the g3. My office is a fringe service area and the G3 is more reliable and seems to grab a signal better than the note 3.
The note 3 would sometimes error out sending texts and occasionally not ring on inbound calls (I have my office phone twinned to my cell) The g3 is relaible enough where I don't even enable wifi calling at work. $.02
I came from the Galaxy S4 and the cell reception with the Verizon G3 is slightly worse.
I have also found that in mountain areas (where the phone can see numerous towers but only the closest one works) it bounces between cell towers constantly and will never stay locked on the cell tower that works. Quite frustrating actually.
terrible on tmobile. but im pretty sure it's just tmobile.
Well thanks for the info guys! I actually ended up trading and thought I should make an update with my results.
So far this phone hasn't had any issues with phone calls in my house which is all I wanted. As far as I can tell the signal in dBm is the same or maybe a little words but only by 1-3 dBm.
I know there was some kinda issues with the last update for the note 3 that broke something in the phone that hurt the service and the only way to fix it was to get it replaced. So not sure if that was my issue or what.
Ran into a little issue when we traded our phones at the Verizon store. I was on my way home and my phone was downloading all my apps and started getting alerts that I hit 50%, 70% n 90% of my data usage when I previously had unlimited data. Looked on my Verizon and some how I went from unlimited data to .723 GB.
So after being on the phone with Verizon for 30 minutes the gentleman said there was nothing he, or his supervisor, or even his supervisors supervisor could do. But there seemed to be some glitch in the system and I shouldn't have lost unlimited data and they have to fill out a form and I should have my unlimited data back in 1-3 days.
Overall I'm loving this phone wayyyy more than my note and really want to root it but figure I should wait till my data issue gets resolved incase Verizon can somehow check stuff out on my phone Just really hope everything works out with my data.

Coming from a moto droid maxx and liking the native super fast Google experience with Marshmallow.
Phone is dropping data periodically on Verizon and will only pick it back up by changing the preferred network type. Anybody else having this problem? If not, maybe I just have a bad device.
Thanks

No issues here but my house is in a poor reception area. A quick toggle to airplane mode when I get 3g will get me back on to 4g. I'm used to doing that for as long as I can remember, not just this phone
My Nexus 5x on Verizon comes Mon or Tues. I sure as heck hope it doesn't do that. That would be a major problem, as I'm finally getting a real Nexus on Verizon to get away from buggy aosp/cm roms for Samsungs on Verizon.
I just saw this thread. The same exact thing is happening to me.
Is there any negative to having the preferred network type set to "LTE / CDMA". Technically, that is what Verizon's network is.
Do you still sporadically drop data when your preferred network type is set to LTE / CDMA? I just changed it this morning. So far so good.
I was set to LTE/CDMA when it first happened and was not on WiFi.
Since then, tried different apn settings and Global instead of LTE/CDMA with no luck. Just tried setting cellular data to on, even when connected to WiFi.
Over the past 2 days it has happened 3 times, so frequency isn't that high but definitely an annoyance.

That sounds pretty frequent to me.
Hey, my quoting function isn't working, from Tapatalk app.
I just stuck my VZW nano SIM in, didn't adjust any of the options, no problems with data drop thus far
Ya I've had my 5x since Tuesday at 11 am. No network problems
No problems here, signal strength is better both at home and work as compared to my prior phone.
Maybe try a new nano sim from Verizon? The corporate stores will give them away for free. (Have seen posts where folks say the customer service line will mail them for free as well.)
Just adding my experience to the thread: my Nexus 5X on Verizon network is struggling daily with maintaining a cellular connection. I have no issues if I'm in an area where you would typically have a strong signal. However, when I'm in the 1 or 2 bar range, I cannot even receive text messages, much less data. The phone REALLY struggles with group texts. I'm going to full reset and see if that helps things.
Noticed that dropping data seems to coincide with incoming MMS messages, specifically group texts.

Having the same problems. I spoke to a tech at Verizon and they said the SIM card I'm using is being "retired" (their words) and I should go to a retail store to get a replacement. This was after trying to dial their automated smartphone activation number and ending up on the line with a tech. Going today to get a new SIM card and will post the results.
Experienced this with both hangouts and messenger. Hopefully the SIM card resolves it. Keep us posted !

Same issues here even with a new SIM...I also noticed it doesn't go to 3G, its either LTE or nothing? Group messaging is pretty much worthless... Sending phone back and going back to Moto X Pure...had that previous and absolutely no issues
Update: new SIM seems to have fixed the problem with drops. Tested several group MMS and it seems to be OK. Verizon reps were clueless on activating the SIM and took a while to finally give in to my request to just take the card home and activate in my old Moto X. I activated it with a Verizon rep on the phone and then transferred the SIM to the N5X with no issues. Got immediate LTE and was able to do everything as expected.

Is your signal strength any better or worse with the new sim? My nano sim is ancient and wondering if it's one getting retired...
Signal strength is the same and unfortunately the problem came back. It's actually my wife's phone. I bought one for her and one for myself. Mine has been fine on Verizon since I switched from my M8 but she's been having the signal drop problem. The new SIM did not resolve it permanently. I'm requesting a new device from Google today.
