Need to know if anyone else is having this issue and if it's hardware related or just at&t tower related.
I'm regularly getting a censor type logo where my signal bars would normally be (it's a circle with a line through it) basically saying I have no network connection, similar to if you were to take out your sim card. This doesn't seem to be related to signal because it will happen out of the blue and I'll have 4 bars prior. It only lasts for 5-20 seconds, then kicks back in. I haven't had any data drops, but when this happens, I can't call, text, do anything.
Has anyone else experience this? Need some input because I have two days left in my return window and was going to swap it out for a new unit if this sounds like a hardware defect.
Had the phone on for 2.5 hours and was without mobile network for 7% of that time according to cell standby stats. Doesn't seem normal.
Look below for a picture..

Could be your sim card, do you have other at&t phones on your account, if you do are they having issues too?

Only other phone we got is my mom's basic flip phone. I still have two days to swap it out and had at&t tech make note of what's going on on my account, just wondering if this was a issue on their part of my phone's.
I'm in central NJ and in nyc for school (NJ right now) so i'm in a strong service area, but the phones just dropping the network randomly. I can be on xda browsing one second and have that symbol up the next.
Yea, i'd say try swapping it out first, that being probably the easier option at the moment. Then again, if they already have a note of it, they'd know it's a recurring issue should it happen again shortly thereafter.... so i don't think that would be a problem then, either Either way, better to be safe than sorry.

I already flashed back to stock and got everything on dropbox, so if I can I'm gonna go the new phone route. I'd rather know it's something with the towers around here then find out it's my s3 after my return period is up, ya know.
But have you guys ever had this issue like at all? Cause this happens quite often on my phone, once every ten minutes at least, usually more.

It's not your phone.
It's happened to both of my devices (one replacement due to crashing) while I'm at my cottage. (No service zone)
It's the towers.

But I'm in a strong service zone, HSPA+ where I'm at, and 4GLTE a few towns over. Dropping service while at your cottage in a no service zone is a bit different I'd think.
It's worth getting a replacement just in case.
I got the same issue. Happens to both my one x and s3. Lte just started rolling out here and I'm blaming it on that. I rarely get 2g signal anymore

Probably the towers. This was a issue with galaxy s2 also on sprint. Had to do with tower switching

Yeah that would be the best thing to do, and you get a new device lol.
I would request a new sim card just to get a new fresh start... just another thought. lol.
Mine is doing the same thing in good signal area after the signal comes back it goes down to 2g, I'm just returning the phone.

I experienced that issue when I was using Juice defender. For some reason my phone went to airplane mode quite few times. If it would have happened frequently, then I would have thought that I somehow messed the settings for juice defender. It started happening abruptly. After uninstalling that app, I haven't seen that occurring again on my phone. At least for me it was the app rather than the phone that was causing my phone to go to airplane mode.

So I'm having issues with my phone and sprint wants me to bring it in. I have an Odin count of 5. Will they see that and if so do I just play dumb? Maybe tell them I took it to a different store and they looked at it too thus the Odin count is up?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
If they're smart enough to look at the ODIN count, they're smart enough to know that another Sprint store "looking" at the phone isn't going to increase it. That only comes from flashing the phone via ODIN. Really, from what I understand, it's luck of the draw. But someone else who's actually been in this situation would need to tell you whether they had them look.
Personally, I bought the USB jig and reset mine to 0 so I'm no longer at risk.
Ya I bought one too, but it hasn't showed up... Its on a slow boat...

dang that sucks so if you dont have that tool you cant reset your odin count?
Do you have to flash by odin or can you do in recovery I'm coming from an evo And have always used ra but only cwm is on this phone correct?

Follow this guide if you don't have a soldering iron, really need it done, and can't/don't want to wait for the Jig.
Had to use the "tie them all together & tape them up" method shown in that video to unbrick a friend's Captivate. If you're patient and have a very sharp eye for tiny microUSB pins, it should only take slightly less than forever to line up the resistors to the port's pins and get it to clear the count..
What are your problems that you need to take it to sprint? Also I have read in threads that sprint can't deny your claim for rooting. Maybe search for more info on warranty and rooting.

I think they released a document the same day or right around the time of the E4GT release stating they could terminate your service for having a rooted phone.
Most techs aren't even aware that Odin exists. Only reason I know is because I have an E4GT.
I just made a USB jig today, literally took like 5 minutes. There's a bunch of how-to vids. Plugged it in and it worked first time. No Odin count.

It'd be very easy without a soldering iron as well, twisting the resistors together well and just touching the appropriate pin contacts.

Ive been having issues with not getting text when the phone "hibernates". The moment I touch the power button, and go to the lockscreen it pops up. Im also having slow 3g connection speeds. I'm at about 500 kbs with 3 to 4 bars. Is that normal? My brother was getting 4mbs with his IPhone 4s in the same location! Which really pissed me of. ... Thanks again for all the help.

For what it's worth, coming from a Sprint tech, very few people at Sprint - much less techs - know anything about ODIN, and most wouldn't take the time to verify. In our area (and ASAIK, nationally), we aren't technically allowed to use ODIN since it wasn't built by and for Sprint, but I've used it if it meant getting a phone working again.
Point is, unless the phone is obviously rooted (e.g. has custom ROMs or still has root apps installed and root/ROM files on the SD card), I've never seen nor heard of anyone being denied service or a new phone. As long as you put your phone back to stock beforehand, you should be fine!

I'm sorry if any of these are insulting to you intelligence, but do you have Green Power or Juice Defender (or any app that claims to save battery life and may turn off radios to do so)? Also, have you noticed if the DL speed issue is restricted to one locale, or are you experiencing ****ty speeds pretty much across the board?
It's kind of hit or miss... As for the apps the only similar one would be a battery calibration app. Could that cause my missed text? That's probably my biggest gripe.

I have that app on this phone and another and used to use it on my Epic. I don't think it should be causing you any problems. That being said, its always there for free on the Market. You could uninstall it and just add it back after a flash of something

Sorry I've had spotty internet at my house lately... thankfully there are things like tethering after I give up trying to fix it!
JohnCorleone is right, it's probably not the battery app, but you could try uninstalling and seeing if that makes a difference.
On top of that, I would uninstall any 3rd party texting apps if you have them (e.g. Handcent or Go SMS), seeing if that fixes the issue, and proceeding from there. Not all of them cause problems for everyone, but some of them do cause issues for some people.
Try to update your PRL and Data Profile (Menu --> Settings --> About Phone --> Update PRL and then Profile), and beyond that, someone will probably have to get their hands on the phone and determine if it's a phone issue or a network problem. The only thing besides that you could try doing would be calling into tech support and asking them to check the latency times on messages if you seem to be having problems specifically with other carriers (esp. Verizon).
I hope that helps, but I have a bad feeling it won't take care of things...

I can tell you are using a case for your phone when you did your gps test, because I have an otter box case and it is interfering with my gps signal. When I have my case on my phone can see 2 satellites with 0 locks but when I removed my case my phone can see 7 satellites with 7 locks from the same spot.
What I am most impressed with is with the case on outside I can get a consistent gps lock. I drove home without losing my signal and I drive over 30 miles.
So in short if you are using a case for your cell phone it can interfere with your gps signal. So this is just another element to consider if you are having gps signal problems.
I am just think since having a case interferes with the phone signal it can also decrease somebody's battery life I am assuming.

Get GPS lock on Gingerbread and keep it on.

What if you cant get gps lock on the gingerbread rom??
I think a lot of us with GPS issues are suffering from a hardware issue. On my first phone, I never got a lock. Literally maybe only about 2 or 3 times; didn't matter if it was GB or ICS. After I hard bricked and got a replacement, GPS was smooth as butter out of the box on stock GB or 4.0.x without pushing any files. For the record I did get my lock on GB before I flashed CM9 but I don't think it would've mattered. At least for me personally, I think it was hardware related.

Ok. I think I just found something out. I have been running a custom prl. I just flashed back to stock el29. Still runnning the custom prl, forced roam. NO lock. I went ahead and updated my prl in settings, rebooted. Stood near my back door, got 6 satellites and locked with in 10 seconds. Maybe someone can chime in and tell me why using a custom prl in force roam would keep me from getting a lock?? Thanks.

After receiving my replacement yesterday, i have to agree that most of the gps problems are hardware related.
The first e4gt i bought developed a usb issue so it was replaced with one that had a very weak gps. I tried everything to get it to work. I was able to get sprint to replace it again, and the one i have now works great, even on fc07 which is what i have installed now.
I would suggest to anyone that has an issue with gps to try and get a replacement if clearing the agps data with gps status doesnt solve the issue, which is what i had to do with my first phone.

Is this normal for the GN? Do I have a faulty device? On wifi, my download speeds are horrible for this type of device. At home, I have comcast broadband, and a comcast router. My GS2 destroyed downloads at a ridiculous rate. We're talking MBs a second. Full wifi signal. My GN barely holds 3 bars. Consistently downloading at a couple hundreds kb/s
Before you say anything, no it's not my router. I've 2 laptops, a PS3, a kindle, and a TV, all hooked up to the router, and they've no problem.
If this is the way it's going to be, and exchanging the device won't help, I guess I'll cancel verizon, and head to sprint and pick up another sg2. IDK.
Anything guys? For a device like this to be faulty in an area like downloads via wifi, especially when verizon charges up the butt for data, it's unacceptable.

I am actually going to say it. It could be your router. The GN is finnicky as hell with wifi channels. Wifi channels will affect signal strength, stability of connection, and speed of intarwebz.
Now before you say it: Not all wifi chipsets and devices are created equally. It is a phone, it doesn't exactly have a hi gain antenna in it
For a $750 phone, you think the parts would be equal to other phones. If it is my router, I have like 6 other devices on it that work just fine, so I think it I can safely blame it on the phone. Deal breaker I think.

To each their own.
To not even consider my suggestion of checking out other wifi channels is a disservice to the device and yourself.

Sounds like you should swoop an iPhone. If you are using a N Draft router you need to select a certain channel range (Google it, you'll find it). I pull 10-20 MBPs on WiFi. Its not that hard to change your wifi channel btw.
Ya well I had a gs2 and absolutely no problems. This phones a bit laggy, battery life seems much worse, even with juice defender. Paying more per month for it. I guess I expected more.

Here's a question, with data disabled, and only text messaging, why did my battery drain 5% in 6 minutes? I literally stood and had a conversation and looked at my phone, and it went from 38% to 33% in 6 minutes. This is also the extended battery
In fact, it just drained 3% in the time it took me to write this post out.
Ridiculous.

You aren't looking for help, so why are you continuing this thread?
If it took 3% to post this, you are either the world's slowest typer or lying. I am sorry but you lost your credibility with me when you refused a simple suggestion that would have taken you all of 3 minutes to test and instead decided to bash the device. Your agenda was not to come here for help.

Yes I did come here for help. I would have liked another suggestion other than one pertaining to messing with my router channels. Which in turn would probably interfere with the other 6 devices on my router and I'd end up going around in a circle.

I guess we will never know, seeing how you know better without ever trying
What other solutions did you think you would find for your device? A cantenna? Changing channels is the first thing you should try in these cases.
Could we have determined that maybe something is wrong with your device? Sure. But you can't teach someone who knows it all.

I understand that you're in love with this phone. But because you might not have problems doesn't mean others don't either.
Yes, my battery is draining as fast as I posted. If you don't have any viable solutions, I would like to hear what others have to say.

Whatever dude. Battery in this thing sucks. Not worth it. I have to be afraid to turn on my Nexus or my battery will drain. I timed it for about 20 minutes. All I was doing was moving around in my settings and in my phone, no browsing, no games, etc. My battery drained 1% every 2 minutes, probably take a few seconds. Just to roam around my phone, my battery was dying practically by the minute. This is with the extended battery and NOW juice defender ultimate. No network, wifi only, full brightness.
Why would I lie? I have no reason to lie. Truly I was looking for answers at first, then you got all upset because this phones your baby. If this phone's charge lasts you all day, you apparently don't use it the way it was made to be used.
I'm now turning on auto brightness which will obviously make a difference, but will totally offset the ENTIRE point of purchasing this device, which is the screen and it's beauty. That is, unless you're sitting right next to a charger.
Whatever. No help here.

Can't help the helpless. You did not post battery stats, you were never open to any suggestions with your first problem. Now we can glean from your post that you were likely at max brightness and are confused the battery was being drained by the screen. Derp.

Changing wireless channels is normal troubleshooting for any wireless device with connection issues. I got upset because this phone is my baby? Mine works. Not upset in the least!
I used to do Microsoft support when I was younger--
You know what we used to do with difficult folks like you who refused to try troubleshooting due to them 'knowing' so much? Format their machines and send them on their way. You just can't help those who know it all. Why ask for help if you already know everything?
Move on, Mr. Troll. Another device awaits you.

if you had tried the suggestion of changing wifi channel, people would continue to help. if you cant even understand/are willing to try basic troubleshooting, you are right... there is no help for you. no one wants to deal with someone who wont even think about trying suggestions.
battery drain issue
I started experiencing the same kind of battery drain issue you're talking about (if I was reading a kindle with screen brightness at minimum in airplane mode my battery would last less than an hour, and that was extended life battery) and it turned out I had a bad phone. Verizon replaced it (finally, after I showed them a screen dying with dead pixels and off colors) and my battery life increased. But not as much as I would have liked! Turned out bad phone ruined my extended life battery. Got a new one, no longer have "battery anxiety" - maybe call the company, explain what's happening, and try a replacement before you decide "all" GNEX are crap.
WIFI reach on phone is not as good as on my Galaxy 10.1 Tab, but my D/L speeds are pretty much consistent with everything else on network, so all your problems could be the same.
LOL @ This epic fail of a thread. The OP is beyond help as there's no helping the intentionally obtuse.

Hi all, this is my first post here, just thought I would share my experiences with the LG G3 (D855)
...probably the worst phone I have ever owned, so far I have had the Nexus one, Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4 and a Nexus 5. My nexus 5 got destroyed at work, so took this as an opportunity to upgrade, but didn't want the Nexus 6 due to its size.
Now, where to start with the G3...
Signal- it is unbelievably bad, going from the Nexus where signal was nearly full in my room to barely getting any now. It is impossible to make calls or browse the net with the phone unless connected to the WiFi, I could download on H+ at about 1.2 mB a second, where as the G3 will barely refresh Facebook. My phone gets used at work quite a bit, but the signal isn't the strongest- however, all phones worked there to make call, apart from this one
Keyboard- Who the hell designs a keyboard without the comma on the front of it without having to go into a menu? This is where you tell me to install another one, but seriously?
Battery- yes I can understand it is a big screen etc, but for 3000 mAh it a atrocious.
Airplane mode- yes I know what it does, why the hell does it tell me every time I select it.
McAfee- we have a play store, I am not a chump and don't download from unknown sources, give the option to remove it.
Vibrate- yes it is harsh, but I work in a noisy environment, I need a strong vibrate function, however, one thing I DO NOT NEED is for it to vibrate in my ear when someone texts/whatsapps me during a call. This makes hearing the other person impossible, they can even hear it on the other end of the phone. I see no way of dulling the vibrate but only when in a call?
-Camera lag
-OS lag (Severe)
Yes, they have wowed their customers with a qhd display, but seriously, they need to start spending money on where it matters like antenna research. After a quick Google, it turns out to be a huge problem with this phone. Not just mine personally.
I am returning this phone after 18 hours of having it. Sorry LG, but they have lost me as a customer.
Dave
Looking for your previous phones I still think this "lag" is a placebo.
Came from a GNex and I must say that LG G3 does NOT lags.
Thank you for your judgment on how I percieve lag, my last phone was a Nexus 5 with CM, it did NOT have lag. This phone does.
UPDATE
Ok, after doing some more reading up, I decided to give the phone a bit more of a chance. I was headed on a 60 mile drive with my brother to see my family this Christmas. Before I left, I gave it a factory reset just to make sure I started with a clean slate.
Anyway headed on my way, 85% battery, I sent a friend a whatsapp message that would sit there ready to send and then go when I got signal. 40 miles traveled, checking very often here and there and it still hadn't sent. The battery had dropped to 25% in this time. Rather than waste any more time or battery in the hope that it would eventually get signal, I put airplane mode on. Guess what, I know what airplane mode does, because it told me AGAIN.
Now, I know this journey well, I know where I get signal and where I don't. All previous phones would have worked numerous places where the G3 didn't.
Oddly, instead of getting signal in some of the places around home where it should definately get it, the phone just constantly displayed roaming and wouldn't allow data. This happens with the Three network from time to time, but always happens in certain places where the network isnt available and allows voice calls only, not at home where there IS reception.
UPDATE
Just discovered that the stock charger cannot supply enough current to use the phone at the same time as charging. This phone is just brilliant...

I understand you are about to return it already, this is more for people who is experiencing your issues.
The 2 issues above can be solved:
-Keyboard: it is configurable. Settings-> Language and input-> Lg Keyboard-> Keyboard height and layout-> Bottom row keys.
-OS lag: I got the phone 2 days ago and I was quite pissed off about the touch panel lag. The issue was the Touch zoom in my case. Go to Settings-> General-> Accessibility and disable Touch zoom.

I am not sure what do you mean here. I used the phone for a couple of hours yesterday from 0% battery to ~30% while charging.
I hope this helps.
R.
Ok thank you, installed the google keyboard for now, used to it so feel at hone
I can live with all the issues (as I would most probably ROM it if I kept it anyway) but cannot abide the very very poor signal and the charging. It is currently on charge and has dropped 2% in the time I have written this. Screen brightness is on its lowest.
Have raised an RMA, just waiting to hear back. It is such a shame, it has its good points, love the screen, volume isn't as bad as most make out. Just a lot of other issues (mainly software) that seriously need to be addressed.
Did i just read you complaining about LAG comparing the LG OS with a nexus 5 that was on ****ing CYANOGEN?!
Well just install CYANOGEN on your G3 and be done with it....

And that will cure my hardware signal issues will it? I think not.
UPDATE
Tried three different chargers tonight, none of which make any difference to its inability to be charging while being used. It just keeps slowly running out.
Yeah I just upgraded from a Nokia Lumia 1020 today, and I have to admit...I am unimpressed. This thing is, on paper, WAY more powerful, so why the hell is it so. goddamn. LAGGY?
The lag, I can live with, as said, if I was keeping it I woukd probably ROM it anyway.
The thing is there are a lot of issues that need to be addressed, and with us all being techy types we could sort most of the issues with some modding, but here is my question, what does the average end user do with the problems? Accept them? Talk to LG and get told that the phone should vibrate like that when getting a notification during a call? Get told that the signal issues are because of the carrier. Get told that the reason their batteriy is going flat is because of apps they have installed? When after all this it is a combination of bad software and hardware that lets this phone down, no one else's fault.
UPDATE
Battery full notification, during writing this, every time I paused for a few seconds the phone vibrated, left a notification and bleeped to tell me the battery was full- this gets highly ***king annoying after a while, can this be turned off?!
Oh, here is the graph of the battery during my drive yesterday that I explained about. The drop is when the phone was looking for signal duringn the journey.

You can see at the -5 and -3 hour mark where I put the phone on charge, a small spike in the graph, then immediately while being used, the level continued to drop with it still plugged in.
Yeah, the average user is pretty much ****ed. Thing is, there is NO excuse for it. If Microsoft, the former king of bloat, can make a smooth, fast, stable operating system that flies even on low end hardware, why can't Google make it fly on high end hardware? Why can't LG?
I will keep experimenting with Roms, but right now it's very likely I'll return this and go back to a Windows phone.

It is such a shame, the phone does have some good bits going for it, but I am definately returning mine, the RMA has been raised with Ebuyer, just waiting to hear back.
I would have rommed it, but seeing as it's going back I couldn't be doing with the hassle of doing it and putting it back to stock again. Also, not being able to utilise the 4k and other camera features in aosp. Maybe someone can sort that, but either way, a phone not being able to get signal is a big problem for me and for some reason this issue seems to be getting more and more common nowadays (why is this?).
A quick question, which smartphones ACTUALLY have good signal? Once this one has gone, I'll be looking for another phone.
I just bought my G3 Monday, switched from an iPhone 6. The stock rom was slow.
Today rooted and installed Candy5. This phone is a beast. I haven't had one thing today phase this.
You can't compare CM to stock.
Works very well paired the Lg w110 watch.
Also this phone has much much better coverage then my iPhone and has the same that my Note 2 had.

Alright so the back up, reset, and restore went smoothly. And the battery is at least counting upward when plugged in so I think I'd call that some pretty intense progress. Though even then it not definite proof that it works 100% how I'd like it to, it's too soon to tell. I'll keep everyone updated if it starts acting up over the next few days.

Well I can say for sure that the battery is better than it was. I still have all the same apps and use it just as much as I did - if not more. I charge it to 100% before leaving the house for the day and usually the phone would be dead before I got home but it's currently at 32%, so it's progress. Used to be at like 70% when I got home before the update but at least it gets me through the day. I think it's worth giving a try.

I had a thought as to what might be causing my battery drain. I'm wondering if it might be because I don't have a SIM card in the phone? I have been using my nexus 5 as a daily driver for the last couple weeks. I'm wondering if because the phone doesn't have a SIM that it's constantly searching for a signal or trying to maintain connection to at&t's servers for software updates or something? Do you think this may be what's keeping the phone from sleeping?

Coincidentally I also got an update in the security policy for my phone from at&t and it said it changed around app permissions so maybe it kept them from staying awake because I just checked the graph thing and my phone isn't awake as much. Right now there are too many factors to single out what one thing it is that is helping the issue.
I was having the exact same issues. At work I was sitting at my desk and after about a half hour, with my phone in my pocket and not touching it, my leg would start to feel warm. So, since I'm not allowed to pull my phone out and look at it, I waited till I was on break. In 2.5 hours my phone went from 98% to 68%. So, I restarted my phone and went back to work. After an hour, my leg started warming up again. I tried to ignore it but I was getting scared it might blow up in my pocket. I went to the bathroom to just shut the phone off until break and it was at 36% after just 2 more hours.
This all started after the 5.1.1 update and only at work. So I downloaded Gsam Pro and Usage Timelines Pro and tried to find out what was going on.
Turns out it only was happening when I was at work AND had Bluetooth turned on. I guess that's because I turn on Bluetooth while at work to watch movies off my Plex Server and listen with my Bluetooth headphones. I turned off Bluetooth and use my tablet (running 5.1.1 with 0 problems) at work instead. So far so good and it's been a week.
I would like to point out that in 8 hours at work, before the upgrade, my phone used to go from 100% to 75 with light usage and bad wifi signal. It's now back to those percentages after turning Bluetooth off.
Also, neither battery monitoring program showed Bluetooth as the culprit.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using Tapatalk
I have had my Bluetooth settings turned off today. The phone seems to be sleeping perfectly and I've had 3.5 hrs SOT with 35% battery left. Considering much of the SOT was gaming I think that's pretty acceptable.
