Need to take my phone to Sprint with 5 Odins - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So I'm having issues with my phone and sprint wants me to bring it in. I have an Odin count of 5. Will they see that and if so do I just play dumb? Maybe tell them I took it to a different store and they looked at it too thus the Odin count is up?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App

If they're smart enough to look at the ODIN count, they're smart enough to know that another Sprint store "looking" at the phone isn't going to increase it. That only comes from flashing the phone via ODIN. Really, from what I understand, it's luck of the draw. But someone else who's actually been in this situation would need to tell you whether they had them look.
Personally, I bought the USB jig and reset mine to 0 so I'm no longer at risk.

Ya I bought one too, but it hasn't showed up... Its on a slow boat...

this is what passes for "cheap" and "easy" these days. LOL. Looks kind of fun if you're the DIY type.

dang that sucks so if you dont have that tool you cant reset your odin count?

Do you have to flash by odin or can you do in recovery I'm coming from an evo And have always used ra but only cwm is on this phone correct?

Follow this guide if you don't have a soldering iron, really need it done, and can't/don't want to wait for the Jig.
Had to use the "tie them all together & tape them up" method shown in that video to unbrick a friend's Captivate. If you're patient and have a very sharp eye for tiny microUSB pins, it should only take slightly less than forever to line up the resistors to the port's pins and get it to clear the count..

What are your problems that you need to take it to sprint? Also I have read in threads that sprint can't deny your claim for rooting. Maybe search for more info on warranty and rooting.

I think they released a document the same day or right around the time of the E4GT release stating they could terminate your service for having a rooted phone.

Most techs aren't even aware that Odin exists. Only reason I know is because I have an E4GT.

I just made a USB jig today, literally took like 5 minutes. There's a bunch of how-to vids. Plugged it in and it worked first time. No Odin count.

It'd be very easy without a soldering iron as well, twisting the resistors together well and just touching the appropriate pin contacts.

Ive been having issues with not getting text when the phone "hibernates". The moment I touch the power button, and go to the lockscreen it pops up. Im also having slow 3g connection speeds. I'm at about 500 kbs with 3 to 4 bars. Is that normal? My brother was getting 4mbs with his IPhone 4s in the same location! Which really pissed me of. ... Thanks again for all the help.

For what it's worth, coming from a Sprint tech, very few people at Sprint - much less techs - know anything about ODIN, and most wouldn't take the time to verify. In our area (and ASAIK, nationally), we aren't technically allowed to use ODIN since it wasn't built by and for Sprint, but I've used it if it meant getting a phone working again.
Point is, unless the phone is obviously rooted (e.g. has custom ROMs or still has root apps installed and root/ROM files on the SD card), I've never seen nor heard of anyone being denied service or a new phone. As long as you put your phone back to stock beforehand, you should be fine!

I'm sorry if any of these are insulting to you intelligence, but do you have Green Power or Juice Defender (or any app that claims to save battery life and may turn off radios to do so)? Also, have you noticed if the DL speed issue is restricted to one locale, or are you experiencing ****ty speeds pretty much across the board?

It's kind of hit or miss... As for the apps the only similar one would be a battery calibration app. Could that cause my missed text? That's probably my biggest gripe.

I have that app on this phone and another and used to use it on my Epic. I don't think it should be causing you any problems. That being said, its always there for free on the Market. You could uninstall it and just add it back after a flash of something

Sorry I've had spotty internet at my house lately... thankfully there are things like tethering after I give up trying to fix it!
JohnCorleone is right, it's probably not the battery app, but you could try uninstalling and seeing if that makes a difference.
On top of that, I would uninstall any 3rd party texting apps if you have them (e.g. Handcent or Go SMS), seeing if that fixes the issue, and proceeding from there. Not all of them cause problems for everyone, but some of them do cause issues for some people.
Try to update your PRL and Data Profile (Menu --> Settings --> About Phone --> Update PRL and then Profile), and beyond that, someone will probably have to get their hands on the phone and determine if it's a phone issue or a network problem. The only thing besides that you could try doing would be calling into tech support and asking them to check the latency times on messages if you seem to be having problems specifically with other carriers (esp. Verizon).
I hope that helps, but I have a bad feeling it won't take care of things...

Excessive inexplicable battery drain? Look here.

I would try the EK02 modem here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367695
The EK02 modem may cure LOS and could potentially cure other problems such as what's discussed in this thread.
If you changed from EG30 to EG12/EG31, you cannot at this time go to the EK02 modem because it is not a full modem, just a "patch" to the EG30 modem
Background: Previously I was experiencing absolutely horrid battery life with the Epic Touch, Sprint even replaced the device with a brand new replacement and it still occurred. (When I say horrid battery life I mean I would watch a 21 minute show on Netflix via wifi and go from 100% to 72%) A full battery, phone untouched, wouldn't last 6 hours.
Anyway, I know that others have had this issue as well, and from what I've seen they are running the EG30 modem. (As was I)
When I odined to EG12 my battery improve significantly. (Not perfect but much better)
[Discharging from 99%] with constant usage/screen on the phone used 11%.
That's about what I'd use in 10 minutes previously.

Open odin, place modem.bin in phone slot, boot into download mode and start the process.
Important note, you cannot go back to EG30 at this point as it hasn't been successfully pulled from a phone.
Well just a word of warning, currently if you flash EG12, you can't back to EG30 and some people are reporting problems receiving calls when the phone is in sleep mode when using EG12.

As far as problems receiving calls? I have had NO ISSUE with that whatsoever and my phone has problems sleeping whether I have EG30 or EG12.
I think this "fix" is more of a remedy for a certain percentage of phones that are experiencing inexplicable excessive battery drain on the EG30 radio.

So this makes me wonder ... WTF is different from my EG30 bin, where I've gotten excellent battery life out of the box, and people like matty's? Is it possible that the hardware and/or software on the cell towers in matty's area is different from in my area, and the config in his area doesn't play nice with the stock radio firmware on this phone?
It's the only thing that makes any sense to me on these signal related battery issues. matty has even gone through two phones with the same issue. I'd think the chance of that is rather low, unless his region received a bad batch of phones.
I just don't get it.

I think we should have a thread where people post what major city they're in, their battery life for a full charge, and their modem. Maybe gathering this data could help resolve if its a tower thing.

I don't think it has anything to do with the towers. I had my phone in airplane mode when I was playing with different settings [with EG30] and the issues still existed.
I would be interested in knowing if there are different hardware versions besides the D710.10.
I still think it's a modem/kernel combo issue.

I see that.
Obviously I wouldn't recommend flashing this if you aren't having the issue.
But to be completely honest with you, if you're having the battery drain that I'm talking about [and I've seen others with this issue too], it's pretty useless.
I mean, 6 hours of battery life with the phone not being touched dude.
But yeah, no call issues here.
Ensure those that are having call issues don't have there phones face down as the call will be silenced I believe if they have that setting enabled.

My goodness, I must have been pretty irked to have made this thread from phone... where I couldn't even see the difference in sizes..
I hope the sarcasm was obvious enough that people aren't setting everything to the settings in the pictures...
I was pointing attempting to point out that, by default your settings are in kill-the-crap-out-of-battery mode and that a few simple adjustments
easily got me 4 hours of screen-on time.. and you guys aren't me (definitely not proud of this addiction).. you'd probably get 4-5 off the jump with a clean install followed by turning off the nonsense.

I am definitely going to regret this and will probably throw in the towel after a while.. but for the love of (insert special individual or super deity) please stop making new threads (yes.. Like this one... jerk..) about the same tired things..

If you want to layer on top of what you did for even more performance + battery like you can grab tegrak (I know you got pay for it but worth it) switch governer to wheatley (assuming you have the latest TM Kernel installed) undervolt each step to -50mah (-75mah at each step works for me but can be unstable for other -50mah seems to be pretty universal) THEN overclock to 1.252ghz (let your ROM settle and do some usage tests) if 1.252 hold (which it should) push to 1.3ghz. Also for wifi go to setting advanced and set your sleep policy to either Never or Only when plugged in.
This is what I personally did that seems to fix all my major issues as far as huge battery drain. Finally allowing me device to go into a deep sleep and leave wifi on plus killer battery life & performance. And I am not running any custom scripts or anything......
SIDE NOTE:
After applying all these settings I left my phone off the charger last night. Went to bed with 95% battery. (mind you all my sync and even location services + maps everything is on) woke up 8 hour later and was down to 91% now that is some sexy deep sleepage and killer battery drain. This is what I would expect to see.
I try not to advertise when possible when I'm on here.
Just a preference, and I have exceptions.

How's the battery life on this one?? :victory:
This is an odd post. But I am using some of its advice!
i feel like i just read a post written by nicki minaj.

About to return mine

Need to know if anyone else is having this issue and if it's hardware related or just at&t tower related.
I'm regularly getting a censor type logo where my signal bars would normally be (it's a circle with a line through it) basically saying I have no network connection, similar to if you were to take out your sim card. This doesn't seem to be related to signal because it will happen out of the blue and I'll have 4 bars prior. It only lasts for 5-20 seconds, then kicks back in. I haven't had any data drops, but when this happens, I can't call, text, do anything.
Has anyone else experience this? Need some input because I have two days left in my return window and was going to swap it out for a new unit if this sounds like a hardware defect.
Had the phone on for 2.5 hours and was without mobile network for 7% of that time according to cell standby stats. Doesn't seem normal.
Look below for a picture..

Could be your sim card, do you have other at&t phones on your account, if you do are they having issues too?

Only other phone we got is my mom's basic flip phone. I still have two days to swap it out and had at&t tech make note of what's going on on my account, just wondering if this was a issue on their part of my phone's.
I'm in central NJ and in nyc for school (NJ right now) so i'm in a strong service area, but the phones just dropping the network randomly. I can be on xda browsing one second and have that symbol up the next.
Yea, i'd say try swapping it out first, that being probably the easier option at the moment. Then again, if they already have a note of it, they'd know it's a recurring issue should it happen again shortly thereafter.... so i don't think that would be a problem then, either Either way, better to be safe than sorry.

I already flashed back to stock and got everything on dropbox, so if I can I'm gonna go the new phone route. I'd rather know it's something with the towers around here then find out it's my s3 after my return period is up, ya know.
But have you guys ever had this issue like at all? Cause this happens quite often on my phone, once every ten minutes at least, usually more.

It's not your phone.
It's happened to both of my devices (one replacement due to crashing) while I'm at my cottage. (No service zone)
It's the towers.

But I'm in a strong service zone, HSPA+ where I'm at, and 4GLTE a few towns over. Dropping service while at your cottage in a no service zone is a bit different I'd think.
It's worth getting a replacement just in case.
I got the same issue. Happens to both my one x and s3. Lte just started rolling out here and I'm blaming it on that. I rarely get 2g signal anymore

No LTE rolling out here. Anyway, I'm going to pick one up tomorrow and I'll let you guys know if it's problem solved or not. If not, we'll continue to trouble shoot.

Probably the towers. This was a issue with galaxy s2 also on sprint. Had to do with tower switching

Yeah that would be the best thing to do, and you get a new device lol.
I would request a new sim card just to get a new fresh start... just another thought. lol.
Mine is doing the same thing in good signal area after the signal comes back it goes down to 2g, I'm just returning the phone.

I experienced that issue when I was using Juice defender. For some reason my phone went to airplane mode quite few times. If it would have happened frequently, then I would have thought that I somehow messed the settings for juice defender. It started happening abruptly. After uninstalling that app, I haven't seen that occurring again on my phone. At least for me it was the app rather than the phone that was causing my phone to go to airplane mode.

Sprint repair store question

Ok so my e4gt power button is messed up so I'm taking it to a repair center is there anything that i should watch out for that they lie about? Like my circuit board got water in it even though the phones never been near water. Also can i just complain and try to get a Galaxy Nexus? I also have a buldged battery, so wouldnt that help wirh getting a Galaxy Nexus considering this is my 3rd battery
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
Funny, my power button was acting weird yesturday but all of a sudden fixed itself. Good luck...i have never had an issue with Sprint techs lieing to me. However there are water indicators inside the phone, so if they say it shows water damage...just ask to see the indicators
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
Did you take it in? If so, how did trying the complaint route go? If you got it repaired, was it just a sticky power button?

I would take it in if its having issues, the people that repair the phones are generally quite nice, if they say it has water damage, ask to see the indicators like someone else has said. When I was getting my E4GT, I was looking at the Nexus, and personally preferred the E4GT over it (but that could just be personal preference)

Well, I would ask to see the indicators, but honestly those indicators can be triggered by anything, such as humidity, sweat, etc. Plus, some of the lazier techs will just look at the indicator on the battery, which doesn't necessarily mean the phone has been in water, and they'll consider it water damaged, when the device itself is still eligible for exchange. What you want to ask for is the actual evidence. Is the indicator tripped? Yes? Doesn't necessarily disqualify the phone. The tags are used as a point of reference, but a lot of techs (yes, I'm guilty of this too admittedly) will just use that as a reason to refer you to Asurion or just not service your phone. (Usually I'd only do it if the person had an upgrade or another option like Asurion and they were a douchebag.) Back to the point, ask to see corrosion (white powdery buildup on ports/board) or any other evidence. I've actually seen rust, lol. If they can't show you that, demand that they exchange the phone and/or get on the phone with customer care, or talk to their manager. (This works best at a corporate Sprint store, but in a retailer you might get away with it. I'd just laugh at you but I'm an a-hole =D) All in all, if you can take apart the phone BEFORE you go to the store and make sure there's no damage, do it. YouTube has tutorials on this, watch the whole thing through and if you're comfortable enough doing so, go for it.

You're lucky. Or really pleasant to deal with. At some point or another we will lie to you and laugh about it later. (Okay, not really laugh but we won't feel too bad. Again depends on your demeanor.) Like I said above, don't go by the indicators, ask to see the actual evidence, which is usually corrosion. If they try to say "oh there's no corrosion but there's blah blah blah indicating that it's been near water", a good tip is if it sounds like bulls---, it probably is. Use your common sense.

Hey. Yeah, honestly, I'd say it's probably the update that did it. Gotten a lot of reports of screwy features after the update, one being the phantom charging issue (which I once managed to fix halfway, but then the customer's phone wouldn't turn OFF lol.) power button's been an issue as well, which kind of went away sometimes just by downgrading the software back to GB. I'd grab one of the unrooted OC's off the repo and keep it on your tech rig for such an occasion, easy way to turn a swap into a repair. =)

So out of those 18 hours you never turned your screen on? Then you have a ghost of a phone bro! I've never seen that or anyone report that their phone turned on by itself with out getting a call or a text (if your phone is setup like that)... Maybe someone else will help you with more knowledge. No need to make multiple posts about your stuff either. Either here are or in the CM10 thread would've sufficed.
My phone will do this sometimes aswell, only thing that has worked is a reset when I discover it happening.

Just fyi, the phone in my sign is wrong. Sgh-t999 is current phone.
Are you sure you don't hit the home or power button while it is in your pocket?

Unfortunately, I remember having this problem too, but I experienced it on stock ROM both before and after I rooted. I'd have my phone sitting idle nearby and the screen would come on for no reason and would stay on indefinitely regardless of the screen timeout settings, until I manually turned it off. Sometimes it would only happen every couple hours, other times it would happen every 10 minutes or so. Was a major pain in the ass.
Every time it happened, there was never a message or alert of any kind received that would explain the phone waking on its own.
Sadly I was never able to figure out the cause but the issue resolved itself much later on after I had to revive my phone from an unrelated soft brick.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
So the moral and solution to this story is soft brick your device then recover it should come back to normal lol jk

Yeah, mine was doing that at one point too. Not sure why, went away after I flashed another ROM and stayed away even after I reflashed the same ROM back. Randomness.

Now that people are providing some useful posts it will be figured out, oh wait, not one post has given any insight on the matter lol. People saying it happened to me too does no one any good besides upping their post count, and putting some comfort to the OP that he's alone... Maybe fart apps are the cause! My guess is something with in the stock firmware, as I stock and read every post of most of the AOSP based roms and never seen that before, but I occasionally read TouchWiz based rom threads and I might have something like that before. I've ran stock for maybe a total of a week since this phone came out, so it's easy for me to have never seen this before.

Hey buddy, I meant no ill words or anything. I usually am not hostile, I just don't text with attitude (Good or bad) really. People misunderstand that all the time, this is the internet, put your emotions away. I'm 100% serious. If people were to be more helpful then just saying "me too", the issue can be solved or at least have a reason of why it is happening. Post what roms/apps they are using, when the awakening happens, and what apps are running in the background.... those kind of post are helpful and can help pin point what is going on.
I'm having some type of similar issue as yours. Except my phone randomly reboots or just doesn't turn on at all. I've noticed this more recently then in the past.
My phone isn't over clocked or under volted. Governors that I am running are On demand and scheduler is on deadline.
I, too also get random and I mean random screen wake. I thought maybe my phone may be faulty? I read somewhere in the FAQ's section stating S3's with faulty power buttons? Does that have anything to do with this?
Also, OP, did you check to see if any apps are running in the background keeping the phone up? Or is it just randomly keeping the phone "on"?
