I would try the EK02 modem here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367695
The EK02 modem may cure LOS and could potentially cure other problems such as what's discussed in this thread.
If you changed from EG30 to EG12/EG31, you cannot at this time go to the EK02 modem because it is not a full modem, just a "patch" to the EG30 modem
Background: Previously I was experiencing absolutely horrid battery life with the Epic Touch, Sprint even replaced the device with a brand new replacement and it still occurred. (When I say horrid battery life I mean I would watch a 21 minute show on Netflix via wifi and go from 100% to 72%) A full battery, phone untouched, wouldn't last 6 hours.
Anyway, I know that others have had this issue as well, and from what I've seen they are running the EG30 modem. (As was I)
When I odined to EG12 my battery improve significantly. (Not perfect but much better)
[Discharging from 99%] with constant usage/screen on the phone used 11%.
That's about what I'd use in 10 minutes previously.

I don't claim this to be the end all be all fix for battery issues, but try it and report back.

Open odin, place modem.bin in phone slot, boot into download mode and start the process.
Important note, you cannot go back to EG30 at this point as it hasn't been successfully pulled from a phone.
Well just a word of warning, currently if you flash EG12, you can't back to EG30 and some people are reporting problems receiving calls when the phone is in sleep mode when using EG12.

I forgot to add that you can't go back at this point, I will add that to the OP.
As far as problems receiving calls? I have had NO ISSUE with that whatsoever and my phone has problems sleeping whether I have EG30 or EG12.
I think this "fix" is more of a remedy for a certain percentage of phones that are experiencing inexplicable excessive battery drain on the EG30 radio.

Sorry, I thought I sent you an pm back. The method we have to pull the modem doesn't work properly on our CDMA phones.
No one has been successful on pulling the EG30 radio.

I can't wait for Samsung to update the radios. I'm jealous of all the people getting 16-20 hours of battery life. My battery life is the same as my evo4g, maybe worse

So this makes me wonder ... WTF is different from my EG30 bin, where I've gotten excellent battery life out of the box, and people like matty's? Is it possible that the hardware and/or software on the cell towers in matty's area is different from in my area, and the config in his area doesn't play nice with the stock radio firmware on this phone?
It's the only thing that makes any sense to me on these signal related battery issues. matty has even gone through two phones with the same issue. I'd think the chance of that is rather low, unless his region received a bad batch of phones.
I just don't get it.
hmm the eg12 was pulled from the rom/root hub thread in android development section. saying it borks some phones. i guess ill just wait on this. knowing my luck ill be the % that gets their phone borked

Where are you reading that?
I think we should have a thread where people post what major city they're in, their battery life for a full charge, and their modem. Maybe gathering this data could help resolve if its a tower thing.

I don't think it has anything to do with the towers. I had my phone in airplane mode when I was playing with different settings [with EG30] and the issues still existed.
I would be interested in knowing if there are different hardware versions besides the D710.10.
I still think it's a modem/kernel combo issue.

This thread has the folks who are reporting the issue that calls aren't coming through with EG12 when their phone is in sleep mode. If they connect their phone to USB power, they come through.

I'm not suggesting it will happen to everyone, just that these folks are reporting this experience for their setups.

I see that.
Obviously I wouldn't recommend flashing this if you aren't having the issue.
But to be completely honest with you, if you're having the battery drain that I'm talking about [and I've seen others with this issue too], it's pretty useless.
I mean, 6 hours of battery life with the phone not being touched dude.
But yeah, no call issues here.
Ensure those that are having call issues don't have there phones face down as the call will be silenced I believe if they have that setting enabled.

So I'm having issues with my phone and sprint wants me to bring it in. I have an Odin count of 5. Will they see that and if so do I just play dumb? Maybe tell them I took it to a different store and they looked at it too thus the Odin count is up?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
If they're smart enough to look at the ODIN count, they're smart enough to know that another Sprint store "looking" at the phone isn't going to increase it. That only comes from flashing the phone via ODIN. Really, from what I understand, it's luck of the draw. But someone else who's actually been in this situation would need to tell you whether they had them look.
Personally, I bought the USB jig and reset mine to 0 so I'm no longer at risk.

Follow this guide if you don't have a soldering iron, really need it done, and can't/don't want to wait for the Jig.
Had to use the "tie them all together & tape them up" method shown in that video to unbrick a friend's Captivate. If you're patient and have a very sharp eye for tiny microUSB pins, it should only take slightly less than forever to line up the resistors to the port's pins and get it to clear the count..
What are your problems that you need to take it to sprint? Also I have read in threads that sprint can't deny your claim for rooting. Maybe search for more info on warranty and rooting.

I think they released a document the same day or right around the time of the E4GT release stating they could terminate your service for having a rooted phone.
Most techs aren't even aware that Odin exists. Only reason I know is because I have an E4GT.
I just made a USB jig today, literally took like 5 minutes. There's a bunch of how-to vids. Plugged it in and it worked first time. No Odin count.

It'd be very easy without a soldering iron as well, twisting the resistors together well and just touching the appropriate pin contacts.

Ive been having issues with not getting text when the phone "hibernates". The moment I touch the power button, and go to the lockscreen it pops up. Im also having slow 3g connection speeds. I'm at about 500 kbs with 3 to 4 bars. Is that normal? My brother was getting 4mbs with his IPhone 4s in the same location! Which really pissed me of. ... Thanks again for all the help.

For what it's worth, coming from a Sprint tech, very few people at Sprint - much less techs - know anything about ODIN, and most wouldn't take the time to verify. In our area (and ASAIK, nationally), we aren't technically allowed to use ODIN since it wasn't built by and for Sprint, but I've used it if it meant getting a phone working again.
Point is, unless the phone is obviously rooted (e.g. has custom ROMs or still has root apps installed and root/ROM files on the SD card), I've never seen nor heard of anyone being denied service or a new phone. As long as you put your phone back to stock beforehand, you should be fine!

I'm sorry if any of these are insulting to you intelligence, but do you have Green Power or Juice Defender (or any app that claims to save battery life and may turn off radios to do so)? Also, have you noticed if the DL speed issue is restricted to one locale, or are you experiencing ****ty speeds pretty much across the board?
It's kind of hit or miss... As for the apps the only similar one would be a battery calibration app. Could that cause my missed text? That's probably my biggest gripe.

Sorry I've had spotty internet at my house lately... thankfully there are things like tethering after I give up trying to fix it!
JohnCorleone is right, it's probably not the battery app, but you could try uninstalling and seeing if that makes a difference.
On top of that, I would uninstall any 3rd party texting apps if you have them (e.g. Handcent or Go SMS), seeing if that fixes the issue, and proceeding from there. Not all of them cause problems for everyone, but some of them do cause issues for some people.
Try to update your PRL and Data Profile (Menu --> Settings --> About Phone --> Update PRL and then Profile), and beyond that, someone will probably have to get their hands on the phone and determine if it's a phone issue or a network problem. The only thing besides that you could try doing would be calling into tech support and asking them to check the latency times on messages if you seem to be having problems specifically with other carriers (esp. Verizon).
I hope that helps, but I have a bad feeling it won't take care of things...

I won't say that it made me unhappy, as I already had an amazing phone...but...it certainly doesn't have me thrilled.
The EK02 rom is different, feels a little weird. Something about the over-scroll-glow execution feels funny. Sloppy or slow or something. But not bad, just different.
The EK02 kernel feels snappy and battery life seems a tad improved...though it's hard to tell this early in. It also does not play nice with EG31 modem from my experience. More LOS than I've ever experienced ever....in 10 minutes. EK02 kernel/modem should definitely go together. (though admittedly I haven't tried EK02 modem and EG30/EG31 kernel).
The EK02 modem is very unimpressive. I seem to get less signal and lower data speeds than with EG31. I mean, we're talking a very very minor difference here...only noticeable in fringe locations. But. I live and work in 2 of those very locations and I noticed it. Perhaps radio power is scaled down or something...just a tad...this might explain the seemingly better battery life and less-than-spectacular signal quality.
YMMV, and likely will...sometimes a lot.
I have called sprint twice asking to get this update sent to my phone and they tell me I have to wait my turn. What should I say to them when I call tomorrow?

I ran ek02 with eg31 modem since the leak came out. No LOS at all. I would say it is case by case. All in all I would say it is just like almost every other update. Slight differences but nothing to write home about. That's why I love Samsung. Updates are over rated....hardware is where its at and Samsung never seems to disappoint in that arena.

I have a feeling this is going to end up proving to be true. I got a signal boost (slight) on EK02 modem and EK02 kernel but after 24 hours I think my phone liked EG31 modem/EK02 kernel combination better. I didn't have a single issue on that setup and I think I am starting to see little issues using the EK modem/kernel combo on a 2.3.4 ROM. Now, things may be different when using EK 2.3.6 ROM but i love my current setup and am not ready to change it. This only applies to my setup but this may end up a find what's best for you thing in the end.

Right now I am on calk's 2.0.1a with the EK02 and the EK02 modem. The interface has been pretty glitchy but it might have to do with me running the new adw launcher ex update.
I went to disneyland tonight and I had the strangest thing happen... it showed no bars with a 3g signal, then it went down to an edge signal, back up to normal 3g with bars. It would continue this cycle even though I was sitting in the same spot. I restarted with no changes. Starting to doubt this ek02.
On eg31modem with the stock eg30 kernel it was running like butter.

Are you saying that Sprint/Samsung actually fixed the UI to accurately reflect what data connection you have, or were you monitoring it some other way?
Right now, the 3G icon shows whether you are on EVD0 or 1xRTT... It would be nice if it showed you were on 1x when you were on 1x! It probably would eliminate a lot of the "my 3g speed is crappy!" posts.

Disneyland has a problem with their towers. I have two friends that work there and experience the same issue. I also went there last Saturday and experienced the same. For some reason, if you are in or near Tomorrowland, your phone will get no service and kill its battery life trying. Anywhere else in the park, I seemed to get service perfectly fine but had data issues.

No benefits of any significance. They just used this maintenance update as an opportunity to update the ROM to Gingerbread 2.3.6 and make a few other minor tweaks that probably don't matter to most. The real meat of this update was about the kernel and modem.
Ya know, I was going to post a topic with something similar.
I have been watching and reading every thread since the leak last week of the EK02 and of all the reading I have done, I have not really seen anyone exclaiming about how much better their phone was after updating to EK02. I've seen a few remarks on slightly better quadrant and little to no LOS, but that's been about it.
After reading the Sprint official release info on this update, to me it seems like nothing was really addressed in this update, other than LOS and a move to 2.3.6. While I agree the LOS is a big, big problem and have experienced it a few times myself, I have much bigger issues with the phone that really needs to be addressed.
1) Does this release actually do anything for the crappy reception (both cell, data and wifi) that this phone gets compared to all my other android phones?
2) Does this fix the issues with gps not locking or taking forever (rather than me trying one of the 20 fixes posted that have not seemed to have worked for me yet)?
Maybe this is a dumb or n00b question, but is this just a quick fix bandaid for only LOS or is this the actual MR that we were hoping to come? If it's a bandaid, should we expect an actual MR to come anytime soon?
I guess I am just trying to figure out like the OP, what's the benefit? I was unfortunate enough to screw up a flash and had to Odin to E31 so I am trying to figure out now if it is even worth the effort to flash the E30 (that is finally available) and then upgrade to EK02.
Another n00b question, since the E30 was the missing part of the puzzle that was hampering progress for developers, will this mean that now that it's available, maybe some of my issues that really need to be addressed will probably get fixed first by a developer/xda before a MR ever happens or are these issues that will have to come from sprint/samsung?
Wowww. Sorry! Maybe there wasn't q&a section when I favorited a while back.

This was what my signal looked like using EG30 modem then EK02 modem. Notice all of the green in the signal now. Also, I pay for Hotspot. On 4g, if you were tethered and received a call, it would disconnect. That was also fixed.. LOS, that's really to be determined. I am still on 2.3.4 ROM but using EK02 modem and kernel. Only difference in the 2 screenies is the modem. As for the ROM itself, someone else would have to comment on that. I am waiting on flashing...for now

Like I said, the ROM update appears to definitely be the least important update of the three major pieces. Which makes sense. The EG30 ROM is/was pretty damn good.

I updated the modem to ek02 yesterday and it made a big difference in reception. I had to rely on an airave to make and receive calls since I had the Epic Touch. After the update I can actually have a conversation without relying on the airave. I can also use wifi at full speed without the need to stand next to the router. Only glitch is that I have had 1 LOS since the update. I will keep close eye on it to see if it appears again.

Well, you have to take into account I live in a GREAT signal area. I have 4 bar 4g service sitting on my couch. It seems like the signal strength is improved but if you are in a terrible signal area, it may only improve from terrible to bad.

Ok, flashed back to E30 with no issues...........other than I am getting SD Damaged issue after reboot. Was I supposed to pull the SD card?
Anyway, on to EK02. I don't know if I am getting too old but finding anything in these forums nowadays is becoming increasingly a pain in the arse with all the clutter. So far, the only EK02 modem that I see is for flashing with CWM.
1) Is this the one I am supposed to use?
2) I thought you couldn't do a full install with CWM, only a patch.
You either get the EK02 modem implicitly in the OTA patch update or you flash it manually through the CWM updater.
The EK02 CWM modem.bin update.zip is a patch install. It patches EG30 modem.bin to give you EK02 modem.bin.

That's GPS Test app from market.
This is indoors, 3rd(top) floor, 6 feet from a window.
EDIT: In the middle of a thunderstorm.
If you are using a gps case this can mess up your gps signal.

I can tell you are using a case for your phone when you did your gps test, because I have an otter box case and it is interfering with my gps signal. When I have my case on my phone can see 2 satellites with 0 locks but when I removed my case my phone can see 7 satellites with 7 locks from the same spot.
What I am most impressed with is with the case on outside I can get a consistent gps lock. I drove home without losing my signal and I drive over 30 miles.
So in short if you are using a case for your cell phone it can interfere with your gps signal. So this is just another element to consider if you are having gps signal problems.
I am just think since having a case interferes with the phone signal it can also decrease somebody's battery life I am assuming.

I'm not getting any GPS lock.

If you are willing to take the time to do it, this seems to work for everyone:
Odin one click back to Gingerbread
Odin flash kernel w/ recovery
Restore nandroid (optional)
Get GPS lock on Gingerbread and keep it on.
Boot to recovery and flash format all zip and ROM.
I have walked several people through it and it has worked every time

What if you cant get gps lock on the gingerbread rom??
I think a lot of us with GPS issues are suffering from a hardware issue. On my first phone, I never got a lock. Literally maybe only about 2 or 3 times; didn't matter if it was GB or ICS. After I hard bricked and got a replacement, GPS was smooth as butter out of the box on stock GB or 4.0.x without pushing any files. For the record I did get my lock on GB before I flashed CM9 but I don't think it would've mattered. At least for me personally, I think it was hardware related.

Ok. I think I just found something out. I have been running a custom prl. I just flashed back to stock el29. Still runnning the custom prl, forced roam. NO lock. I went ahead and updated my prl in settings, rebooted. Stood near my back door, got 6 satellites and locked with in 10 seconds. Maybe someone can chime in and tell me why using a custom prl in force roam would keep me from getting a lock?? Thanks.

After receiving my replacement yesterday, i have to agree that most of the gps problems are hardware related.
The first e4gt i bought developed a usb issue so it was replaced with one that had a very weak gps. I tried everything to get it to work. I was able to get sprint to replace it again, and the one i have now works great, even on fc07 which is what i have installed now.
I would suggest to anyone that has an issue with gps to try and get a replacement if clearing the agps data with gps status doesnt solve the issue, which is what i had to do with my first phone.

So my least favorite part about running custom roms on this phone is the "freeze at 45%, reboot to 6%" bug. Does anyone know if this is ever going to be fixed? Or if it is even a real"bug"? Do other phones experience this or just Galaxy S? I don't remember it being an issue when I ran stock, though honestly it was probably only for like a week.

Because this question does not retain to the Atrix 4G (though I am curious as to whether the flashable in that thread would work on cm9 for our phones.) and the other thread you posted is just more lames like you thinking this problem has been solved for the Epic. Now the whole point of a forum is to be able to ask questions in Q+A because others might know the answer already.. but I HAVE googled this (yes even with the site:xda-developers.com filter) and all I can find as far as the epic goes is people telling others to plug their charger in while its off to calibrate it. That doesn't help if you don't have a charger and it doesn't answer my question about whether or not it will be truly fixed for the epic and not "handy manned".. so basically unless you can post a thread that has a flashable software fix or a thread containing above said fix for this then please don't bother and keep your smart ass responses to yourself.

Your lucky... I've had it run down to 2-3%. It sucks when your nowhere near a charger.
never had a problem running my battery all the way down to 1% with the stock 1500mah and the et4g 1800mah batteries. I do remember a couple of the GB leaks that would occasionally shutdown before they hit 5% but lets be honest, that was expected of buggy leaks. Since moving to CM7/CM9/AOKP zero battery issues. Sure, some days i barely make it through the day off the charger, but most days i'm good to go. I do on occasion see the "reboot your phone with 40% battery and boots back up at 15%" "bug" but i don't reboot my phone that often like that, normally i'll shut it down and don't have that issue.

Yeah I've never had it just die on me because it was reporting juice and was actually dead.. and I'll have to test and see if it does it when I do a complete shutdown cause I almost never shut it down. Almost always involuntary reboots for me that come back up with anywhere from 2%-20% .

OP, are you undervolting? If so that is the probable cause of you freezes when your battery gets under 50%. It is not a glass full of energy. Percentage is a direct correlation to voltage. 100% is 4.2V, I believe 0% is 3.7V. As you get below 50% that undervolting will drop even further. As for the percentage fifference it is usually a false reading based on the heat of the battery lowering the voltage reading during the intense drain of rebooting. Usually taking the battery out for a few minutes to cool will bring it back to the 40% or so.

And as to not "pertaining" to the Atrix, you DID ask if other phones were affected.
But to the point, I mistook your question to be simply asking why the phone misreads the battery level upon reboot as mentioned:

I see now that you quite literally mean that your phone is failing to report below a certain level until it dies. To answer your question, I've never seen this, but it would help if you would provide basic information.
1. Rom Tested
2. Undervolting/Overclocking settings
3. Any additional changes you've made after installing a rom
This doesn't sound like a typical battery reporting error others have experienced. Are you undervolting?
P.S. Grow a sense of humor. You'll live longer.

My bad your right. I never work mornings and am in a horrible mood because I happen to be working with my *****y manager (who never works mornings either) and we are clashing hardcore. Sorry I jumped down your throat. To answer ya'lls question I am on cm9 beta 3, but have always had random reboots once in awhile so honestly while its an experimental build I don't think that's the cause of my reboots I'm on the latest Shadow kernel. No undervolting. But anyway the purpose of this thread isn't really to find out why I'm getting reboots (though I appreciate you guys trying to help me find that out too) but rather to find out why my battery drains so much afterwards. So yes you were correct in your original assumtion.

Fair enough ;-).
All I can say is that with the full battery circle mod, rebooting often shows a really low percentage. If you leave it, it usually slowly rises back to where it should be... not sure that's your problem.

I understand what the OP is saying, and I too have this problem. Mostly when I go to cwm and return. My battery sometimes goes from a 60 or even 70 to a 5-19%. Exactly. and today I did a little experiment. I drained to 50% percent and did a manual reboot. I did like kenny and random suggested and let it cool down before I rebooted and while it was better.. it was still not correct... I rebooted to around 25%. Now the atrix folks in that forum apparently have a flashable software fix for this that works. Does anyone wanna take that apart and see if they can work for us? Sorry this just seems so fixable I'm honestly surprised that with our kickin dev community nobody's worked on it.
