Hey Everyone,
Recently I've been wishing for a side-by-side multitasking app that would allow you to view two (or more) applications side by side (or with one above the other), similar to the 'Snap' feature in Windows 7. Whilst investigating this, I came across a piece of software called 'Cornerstone' by Onskreen. To be honest, I know little about software development, but does anyone know if this/something similar could potentially become available from the Google Play store? I think it's been included in Cyanogenmod but no other ROMs as far as I'm aware...
Thanks
There is a web browser named OverSkreen that is floating. I use it when I want to make notes from an online resource -- have word processor open behind the OverSkreen window, with OverSkreen using top or bottom half of screen and word processor the other half.
The 10.1 note will launch with side by side multitasking, I played with one recently, it works pretty well.

I wrote hovernote, a floating notepad app for $0.99: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mjlim.hovernote
There are some other apps that exist for different niches, like overskreen (browser), aircalc (calculator), and airterm (terminal emulator) but I'm finding for some reason that the play store won't let me install them on the nexus 7.
Onskreen by Cornerstone and overskreen and other "floating" apps aren't the same thing.
Onskreen has to be built into a ROM as it modifies framework heavily to give your system true windowed apps.
Really a great concept, open source and possibly being added to Cyanogenmod in the future.
For those that have no clue what this really is, check this:
http://www.onskreen.com/cornerstone/
Cornerstone is probably not going to be added to cm9 in the future. See the comment by Dianne Hackborn here for rationale against: https://plus.google.com/100275307499530023476/posts/ViCME1bb8F6
I thought I saw somewhere a comment specifically saying cornerstone wasn't going to be included in cm9, but I can't find it.

From what I've read, Cornerstone on CM9 is too 'clunky', but Cyanogen was keen to implement something similar...
There is some cornerstone work going on, it's too early in development for me to promise they will keep working in it but I know some people that have started working with it to bring to the N7 if possible.
I found a need floating calculator app the other day that will sit anywhere on the screen and can be moved around and stuff. I'll have to go back and look to find the name of it.

I think you are talking about darkcalc. It's pretty handy, for me anyway.

Yeah I've had a look through various floating apps for different tasks, such as note taking and calculating, but it'd be nice if I was able to use the apps I have already and not be limited to just floating apps. I was really hoping that something like Cornerstone would be widely available so that I could have a game open in the main section and perhaps a website or two open in other, smaller, panels.

AirCalc...works great.
We have Cornerstone nightlies on the Xoom (teameos, ICS builds, iirc).
I used them, but there were eventually too many conflicts with my third party launcher. Great idea, though.
I've used a rom a few months ago on my touchpad that someone added the cornerstone functionality too. It was actually awesome and cm at the time was playing around with it too and was gonna incorporate it I thought for cm10,but haven't heard anything in awhile. It really makes a true multi tasking environment.

You can see the video samsung released today for the device.
Basically you pick an app to fit the left side of the screen and one for the right

I would love the Nexus 7 to do this,
Supposedly only a few apps work side by side. I don't think any app will do it. Probably Samsung apps only... at least what the hands on review said. Maybe more apps loaded later.
Its also releasing with ICS with no date of JB. With Samsungs track record it could be a while. LG pulled this stunt with the G2x and it was months. Samsung don't update their devices very fast. They rather throw out a new device first.

Best not to make a guess. Working in electronics and robotics majors, with programming, things don't go the way you want, especially with programming, scripting, ect. So my guess would be the day they post it ready.
Ya i guess ur right don't want to be let down. This is just the one thing ive always wanted on my phone

the phone is damn near a year old, we should of had this already!
Probably soon. I think it could end up in CyanogenMod 7 or 7.1 and someone will likely get it going in Sense shortly after.
Soon on Sense
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pj1wMQ10xDA
I am sure that many people (including myself) bought this phone with the same dreams as you with HDMI, we have waited this long, another month cant hurt.
It will be here sooner than later. A developer has it done. I have tested it myself and it's pretty amazing. He is close to having an even better version, and close to releasing it publicly.
Right now he only has it coded for Sense Rom's, but you don't have to be rooted, and you don't have to have anything custom. It's a simple APK that just runs in the background and fully mirrors the UI.
It gets enough frames to play emulators, and it's close to having enough to watch video files that aren't supported natively (.avi, .mkv, etc.)
As one person above posted, they tested it with Hulu with good results. Another guy has tested it with Slingplayer and it looked great.
This app opens up so many possibilities. If you are on a sense based rom watch for it to be out soon.
If they video above is legit it seems fast enough even for the show her was watching id love to see a release soon

This
LTE EX Galaxy Nexus - 4.0.3 AOSP
Asus Transformer - Revolver OC/UV
Agreed, it won't be an every day use on GN. But at 4.7" I think I can squeeze two every now and then if it serves a purpose, like a copy/paste or replying to one thing while looking at another scenario.. For sure will be useful on tablets. Kind of reminds me of the video app "Stick It!", which is a cool app and worth checking out.
Pretty neat. but not for me. Hopefully its an option. But definetly best for a tab.

That's awesome news. my old Nokia n900 multi tasked in a similar way. It wasn't as elegant as corner stone though. n I just couldn't enjoy it. I personally enjoy the ics style. Reminds me of webos
I want this............
Nice, while probably not practical for phone use, would be EXTREMELY useful on MHL output?
imagine linked to your TV and having skype and say the browser open? or iplayer and Skype?
this has some pretty useful features.
Looks great! Like other posters have said, i want this for my tablet over my phone. None the less, thanks for sharing OP!
Dianne Hackborn seems to be agaisnt this. But hes alright with carriers and OEMs modifying the framework but not CM.
Main reason? incompability that will make people give apps bad reviews but they didnt work with the modifty framework

People will always give bad ratings for silly things. It's not the app, it's the concept that people don't understand.
Android is open source. People are entitled to do whatever they want, but there are consequences and cons for everything.

Hello fellow E4GT owners! This thread is intended to introduce the idea of a "ROM market" idea i had which has a compilation of all the roms, themes, mods, etc..SO I made a somewhat working concept app that will convey what my idea is. It is a buggy alpha, but ots enough to show what i want to make IF you guys want it. So here is it:
Introducing ROM market!
Purpose:
To bring together all the workings and information of the xda e4gt forums to one place in a market-esque feel.
Features (Users):
-Up to date download links of all current roms, modems, odin tars, mods, themes, kernels, and recoveries.
-Up to date features list, change logs, and screen shots.
-User friendly market-like experience.
Features (Devs):
-Customize your roms page to seperate yourself from the rest
-Direct links to a bug tracker page (If you have one)
Can a mod edit the second option of the poll to a "No" please?
**Update**
Demo:
http://goo-inside.me/devs/Globalninja/Rom-Market-2.0.apk
Tell me what you guys think...Keep in mind this is still in alpha.
Go:
ROMs->Blazer->Blazer 4.0 to see an example of the page.
Whats clickable:
Back button (Top left)
Mail Button (Top right)
Download button
The change log and features box.
You scroll through the images, but I have not added the full screen version yet.
This would be like a "Cydia" but for android right? I've been waiting for something like this. Were we could install mods and stuff like that. Thanks OP

It looks cool, but the E4GT wiki is sorta the same thing, I guess the difference would be a more simpler approach and exclusive to the E4GT? Makes sense if you can get all the developers on board I Imagine.
would you be able to handle the workload? acs updater has a place where people can submit stuff and we are always behind on it... (very very behind)
i use goo-inside.me's app, it has any stuff i do organized very nicely, the admins have it setup so new stuff is automatically added in. it supports automatic updates as well so long as devs set their roms up nicely. plus all teh files are hosted on their server so no worries about old/bad links.
plus they threatened to beat me up unless i endorsed them :O

Very true, but to tell you the truth i have never used the wiki. Ever. I feel this would be very convinient.
As far as exclusive to e4gt. For now yes...in the future i hope to include other devices.
Im building the framework in a way that you have a database of all the information and all you have to do is switch out variables

Greetings fellow S2 users. I hope I'm not too late to the party and this phone still receives much love. I come from the OG Evo 4g side of the forums and after 2 years on sprint, I decided to high tail it to something moderately priced, more current hardware wise, and a plan that is more affordable.
And now with the release of the new OFFICIAL JB update from good 'ol Samsung, will there be any TW kernels or only AOSP? On the Evo, Sense was terrible and slow as all hell, but after playing with TW for a while I've actually become quite fond of the layout compared to AOSP. I will eventually make the switch to AOSP, but for now am LOVING the features of TW. The Music Square is nice for mood based music, I like that the video player plays pirated movies without the need for codecs/apps, WIFI calling is great and works flawlessly, and free visual voicemail without the need got Google Voice.
Sad to see that Facial unlocking is now gone with the new JB update, and there are no music controls on lockscreen for default music app, but those are minor flaws. Would like to see S-Voice but IDK if it's a GSIII thing or not so not too bent out of shape.
So without much further ado, I am here to ask did I make a mistake picking the SGSII, and what I should know about ROM and Kernel wise compared to the OG Evo 4G. In other words, I assume that instead of Sense, it's now boiled down to TW (touchwiz) and AOSP based roms? Furthermore, is SBC still a thing; As in trickle charging? And are there any other news/tricks I should know about?

The kernels themselves wont be in the stickies...they'll be in the development thread scattered throughout.
As far as JB custom kernels...source has only been out a couple of days...gotta give the devs time man lol. I know ptmr3 and Jamison are both working on one.
And I dont know what you mean by sbc...
Sbc means superior battery charging. In other words, a trickle charge. It gives your battery a true full charge. So when you unplug your phone it won't drop a few %.
It was a thing with HTC Evo 4G. I haven't been able to find anything regarding such feature in this section of xda

Been a while since this question was asked flooded the forum daily, but the general consensus then was it is not possible w/o a touchwiz port. If you want more info, do a search, it's been talked about multiple times.

Most of us here agree that nobody wants TW/BLUR/etc, we bought Nexus for "pure Android" or AOSP or an enhanced AOSP ROM. That is why you wont likely see fully functional ports of those skins/overlays/bloatware, we bought Nexus to get away from that bs. No offense to anybody who likes those skins or the features that they might come with, but the Nexus community is more AOSP focused.
hardware doesn't powerful enough, so if you run two window in GNexus, you will feel that works too slow
I think AOSP is great indeed! im not one for sence, unless its sense 5.0, and TW just has the neat window effect. Im sure eventually it could be created natively eventually. The Halo idea is a step towards it i think. Maybe one day!
What about Cornerstone? I loved it on my tablet, while I used it. Not sure how well it would work on a smaller screen though.

Yeah, sorry if I created any confusion. It definitely needs to be baked into the ROM source. "He who we do not name" had an Iconia A500 ICS ROM with Cornerstone built in. It was nice but he didn't include it in future releases of ICS or JB. My understanding is, is that it's really designed for larger screen devices like tablets. I'm pretty sure text etc. would be too small to read in the smaller multitasking windows. But running 2+ apps at once on a GNex and being able to bring them to the larger window at will would be pretty darn sweet. :highfive:

In all honesty, why? The device's age is clearly showing with the ongoing firmware updates that are optimized for higher end devices. The GN, while still a great phone, is becoming somewhat slow and I can't see a mod like this being any better.
It would be indeed a cool idea for the N4 though.
