My HTC Desire is currently unrooted (I had it rooted once, but it started crashing all the time and the battery drainage was awfull..) but especially the limited capability of installing apps is getting on my nerves.
Since I ain't felling like trying around for weeks, I'd like to hear your opinion on which rom ist the most stable and fluid one.
So, my question is now, which rom is right now the most stable and fast?
From the looks I really liked the MIUI ROM I tried, but I also liked the cyanogen mod one.
Additionally: Is it usefull to change the kernel? If yes, which one and how am I supposed to do it?

Any ROM that is small, and fits into the internal memory.
Obviously if the ROM needs an ext partition it will be much slower.
So basically any AOSP ROM will satisfy you. (CM7, Oxygen, MIUI, dGB etc.)

what do you mean by that, just ROMs which need an ext partition for "themselves" or also ones, which use it for apps?

#1 Yes ROM's which use SD Card to store apps/system files will be always slower no matter what.
#2 Never had issues with either one so cant really help you, when does it happen?

well, but that's the main reason for flashing, on the stock ROM I'm just able to have really few apps installed until the internal memory is full.
The crashes where most times completly random. Sometimes it just rebooted in my pocked, another time it froze on the lockscreen, and then it froze while using it. And after some time I got stock in a bootloop (on both ROMs)

Using sd-ext doesn't mean that you'll get slower rom, as long as you have sd card with higher speed (class 6 or 10). You can try CM 7.2.0.1 from Proz0r's thread (with int2sd support) no difference with stock version trust me.

Go with OxyZM1.2 or MildWild v4.3, both Oxygen based and very smooth n stable
Sent from my HTC Desire
got OxyZM1.2 right now, I like it so far...just 2 quick questions:
How can I move whole apps to the ext4 partition on my SD card? I'm running pretty low on memory again...just like 30MB left...
I can also backup the login data of the stock email programm, so I don't have to reenter everything every time I install a new ROM, can't I?
by the way, what's the difference from OxyZM to MildWild?
Thanks for the answers till yet!
Hi,
My experience so far is very limited but:
CM7 is bullet proof, but my experience with using the app S2E to expand internal storage was variable.
One the one hand, you can just install anything you like and not worry about space (within reason)
Downside is after a few months use it was laggy as hell. It was taking 5 seconds to open up swiftkey.
Now, I've since tried the following:
BCM, a version of CM9/ICS for Desire. It's ludicrously fast and comes with a very nice built in script for using the sd card second partition as internal space.
It's still laggy, BUT I've now learnt how to align partitions correctly and that my SD card is badly aligned.
I've got the 4EXT recovery so once I've backed it all up I can re-partition the card correctly and see how much that improves things.
BCM's a2sd script (called Mounts2SD) also allows you to disable writing file times, good speed up from that too, I use it on my desktop PC's SSD.
So far though, BCM is chomping my poor battery, even when idle.
BCM benches about 50% faster than CM7 on AnTuTu (3000 vs 2000)
It's noticeably smoother for UI interactions, my one 3D game (Monopoly) it also noticeably smoother (higher frame rate)
So, I've got to now fix the battery drain and repartition the card and then my good old Desire is all good.
There's also something called Supercharger V6 which bodes well, unless all it's tweaks are already in CM7/9/BCM.
J.
not alot between the 2 really. download attached file and put on ur sdcard, boot into recovery and flash it (install from sdcard) this will give ya more space

hes looking for most stable rom lol also antutu scores are pointless and mean jack s*** imho
Benchmark scores mean nothing, just a bunch of useless information that are not right. Usually all roms that I used and had big scores on benchmark apps were running much slower then the ones with lower scores. As you all can see and try roms with swap support get much higher scores but doesn't run nor smoother nor better.

I am running the stock rom but am contemplating going to the Cryogene's rom or someone others. I haven't researched them to much yet. My phone has done everything I have asked it so far.
Well it might be an issue with the stock ROM. Haven't used it myself for a while though, so I can't say
What ROM are you using? I am thinking i should just root the damn thing and be done with it.
Thats a pretty standard problem with stock stuff, i would root it....theres at least 1 kernel that has sdcard speed fixes. The one i use is chad0989's incredikernel...it takes maybe 1 min now

Right now I'm on Uber Sense RC2.0.0.
It's the Desire Z Sense with themes support, and the only issue I've had with it is no HD support in camcorder (800x480 max) and to mount to PC you need to use the included Uberscript app. But, those are VERY minor things, and I love it
And unrevoked couldn't be simpler to use. I strongly recommend rooting.
Hi Guys,
Sorry for posting here but because of the 10 post rule I can't post in the Runnymede AIO thread.
I have an HTC Desire currently running on Seb's Runnymede AIO newest version(as of now). I have a 16GB SD Card with a 1GB EXT4 partition then the rest are FAT32. Other details are as follows.
System ROM 30/262MB free
Internal 50/154MB free
SD Card (a2sd) 361/978MB free
Note: Details above were derived from Titanium Backup.
Also I didn't install XD2SDX since it says that it is only for CM7 users which I'm not. Also didn't flash any kernels radio or anything in particular just flashed the ROM threads download link for Stock HBOOT users. OC settings says smartassV2 which from what I've read is the default. Playing games on my phone is perfect however it is a little laggy when doing all that usual stuff i.e. messaging, phonebook, settings etc.
It would be really great if there is a way maybe by kernel or safe OC settings that could improve the phones performance.
Thanks so much!
What class is your sd card? Since runneymede is partially installed on the sd card, a slow sd card can be causing this lags. I had a class 2 sd card and had some lags too, now I got a class 6 one and the performance has greatly improved.
Sent from my HTC Runnymede using XDA App
Try to use a min value that is one or two steps higher than now (say 384000 or higher). You could try a different governor as well, e.g. lagfree, ondemand.
Try to wipe cache and dalvik, reboot, let the phone to settle fully without touching it, reboot again, and see if it still lags.
And yes definitely use class 6 card.
Hope this helps.

Are there any bad effects if I tried to up the min value by two steps higher in terms of hardware?
@evertorN Yeah...I have a class 2 SD Card. You think this is the problem? If so is there any other way to fix it except to get a new SD Card?
If your SD card is too slow, the only fix is to buy a new one. And here I would also guess this its the case.

Ok thanks guys, I think I'll get a new SD card afterall.
I don't think it will help much. I have given up on sense 3.x. these roms just use too much memory, so the phone inevitably starts lagging...
See my signature for a tip on really fast rom ;-)
Yup, thats my conclusion too. With a new (class 6) SD-card, 3.x roms run faster than before, but it is still far from lag free.
Just using my SD Card delivered with my Desire, runnymede aio works great ( V4.0 Special Edition )
Hi Guys,
You can also check if your partitions are perfectly aligned as well. New version of runnymede let's you choose what to install which is a very nice feature for a gingerbread with htc sense 3.5.

Sorry, but you're wrong. Just flashed Seb's 4.0 with AD2SDX using a 16GB Class10+ Samsung and performance is amazing! Just to give a clue: Quadrant reports 1810 - out of the box, no tuning at all. On a Desire. And the ROM is _really_ smooth, never ever had such a smooth scrolling. Even the stock ROM felt laggy compared to this one.
Just got a major poblem with widgets ... :-(
But apart from that it's the greatest ROM I've ever used. And there have been a few, believe me ... ;-)

I've just made a fresh install of android 2.3.3 but the phone keeps saying I have low memory (<20MB) on it. I've used app2sd to place ALL of the apps on the SD but no help still. I've tried some forums allready but I still have no idea how to fix this. Sometimes it can't even open my sms as it says the problem again is memory low.
If anyone can redirect me to some page or forum where this is resolved, or help me solve the problem.
Really sorry for taking your time if the solution is easier to find on google than I thought but I had no luck finding it.
Thanks in advance.
Other info: s-off-ed, android installed from http://htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads , for any other info just ask.
Also SD is 4gb.
With app2sd you will be able to move apps to SD (FAT32-partition) if the developer of the app included this feature. So I recommend to partiton your SD card with a FAT32 and an EXT4-partition with at least 1 GB (partition either with GParted or your recovery, if it supports it) and flash an A2SD+ or a DATA2SD-script via recovery.

Thanks but I'm really keen on keeping this version of android on. I was actually wondering what could be causing this problem of low memory space as there is almost no apps on the device (I've moved everything to SD).
Could my problem be that I haven't formatted the device while I was reinstalling android or something????
So how can I solve the problem within this OS?
I can't believe that the internal disk is full when I have nothing on it. Could sms and e-mail really take that much space as I see only those two could be making the problem.
My phone says that there is 137mb used and 11free since I've installed the new OS. I thought the internal drive should be larger than that.
Really if there is no other way of solving this I might be willing to install the supernova but I'm really hoping there's some easier way.

Ok, seriously: Rooting and flashing is not that hard and worth the effort - but I would highly recommend Seb's Runnymede over Supernova, too, as it's way more smooth than Supernova, which was extremely laggy - at least on my Desire.

P.S.: You may have heard already that there are a couple of different hardware combinations out there. And perhaps my Desire is on the slow side and probably my combination of phone and card may not be the fastest around, but, nevertheless, a phone/card, being on the laggy side, is an even better meter for the performance of a ROM than a phone/card which is fast anyway and will run at lightspeed with even a croppy ROM.

As in "how does SWAP work?" Same as on a desktop PC. When available memory gets low, Android will move less frequently used data from RAM to the SD card. It can then move the data back if an application requires it.
Performance gain is changeable depending on what apps you run but it will shorten the life of your SD card. Its best to test it and see if you get any advantage.
Craig
It will not only shorten the life of the sdcard but also eat up more battery. Swap should only be used in Sense 3.x ROM's, but I advise against it entirely since Sense 4.0 is coming out and it's a lot lighter than it's predecessor. On AOSP ROM's (like CM or MIUI) it's rather pointless as they already have lots of free RAM.

I never experienced more battery consumption when I ran swap but that was on the stock Sense 2.1 ROM.
There was a little performance benefit for me on 2.1, apps would load really quick and app switching was quick.
I've never really tried Sense 3.x but have read its pretty much a requirement.
Sense 4.0 is very nice and light so shouldn't be needed. ICS and Sense 4 appears to use less RAM than GB and 2.1
If you need swap on ASOP (CM) you're really doing something wrong.

If it's non tech user then I would suggest you take a look at Oxygen rom. Less menus to navigate, less mistakes. CM7 can get most non tech lost with all the options available. It can even be overwhelming for casual users in my opinion. :highfive:
