[Q] Some questions about RAM - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im currently using CM 7.1 stable rom, i noticed with Android Assistant that total available RAM shows 367,96mb is this normal? Should not be 512mb?
I have no slow issues and rom works great, from your experiences i would know if it's suggested to use V6 Supercharger (and if yes what settings) even if i use a non Sense ROM.
Thanks in advice

Yes, thats normal. While the device has 512MB of RAM, the Graphics and radio hardware share that leaving around 384MB for Android

Maybe a parallel question : How did you know if the swap partition works?
What it really does?
Thanks

Use the Terminal Emulator app. Type "free". If the swap row is not 0 then its worked.

As in "how does SWAP work?" Same as on a desktop PC. When available memory gets low, Android will move less frequently used data from RAM to the SD card. It can then move the data back if an application requires it.
Performance gain is changeable depending on what apps you run but it will shorten the life of your SD card. Its best to test it and see if you get any advantage.
Craig

It will not only shorten the life of the sdcard but also eat up more battery. Swap should only be used in Sense 3.x ROM's, but I advise against it entirely since Sense 4.0 is coming out and it's a lot lighter than it's predecessor. On AOSP ROM's (like CM or MIUI) it's rather pointless as they already have lots of free RAM.

I never experienced more battery consumption when I ran swap but that was on the stock Sense 2.1 ROM.
There was a little performance benefit for me on 2.1, apps would load really quick and app switching was quick.
I've never really tried Sense 3.x but have read its pretty much a requirement.
Sense 4.0 is very nice and light so shouldn't be needed. ICS and Sense 4 appears to use less RAM than GB and 2.1
If you need swap on ASOP (CM) you're really doing something wrong.

[Q] Favourite ROM with Sense UI

Hi just about to to root my Desire - I wonder if anyone could tell me their favourite ROM with Sense UI included (I like it!)
bump! anyone? ... going to step in randomly in bit otherwise
I have Leedroid, it's pretty good, fast and stable and has apps2sd+ (for my the main reason to root and flash) but I dislike the duplication of many apps for which sense has an alternative (eg an android and htc dialer and phonebook) so you are confronted with a choice between these apps in many instances. I would choose teppic74's rom if I hadn't installed leedroid. That said it isn't annoying enough to go trough a a reinstall and setup of the phone, so I will stick with leedroid
I also tried Aurax-Sense but really didn't like the theme otherwise it seemed quite okay
Go for Aurex T-sense...Its the best, flawless and fast I have come across so far...
Alright cool thanks... I just DL'd Aurax - what was it about the theme that bugged you godutch? WIll check teppic74!
Btw whats' the advantage of apps2sd? surely the Desire has enough storage built in for a bunch of apps? And isn't the internal RAM faster?
If you don't like the theme of AuraxT you can always replace it with another one of stock. I did that and even imported the Rosie of Leedroid which has Drag and drop function.

No actually it does not have a lot of memory for apps it gets full really fast, that's why everybody is using A2SD. Froyo has it's own A2SD but it's not as good as it can't install all apps to SD only those designed for it.
Personally I think it's a must.
I'm using the Alex-V 1.7 Rom, I like it as it is not too far off from an official Rom and has a couple tricks to save power. Now with S-OFF we can delete apps we dont want directly from the phone too so everything has become a lot easier.
pinky desire is also a stable one. with sense ui, no FC, and somehow long battery life. IMO. but it really depends on how you will use your phone. different people. different tastes. anyway you can try different roms. that's Android for you!

Well for starters it misses the little indicator to show you on which homescreen you are and I didn't like the transparent notification bar, looked too messy with the background and I didn't like the exorbitant use of color in the notification icons, also too messy
btw I would also stay away from roms that undervolt/underclock it's generally bad for your battery life because the CPU is much more energy efficient when it can enter its sleepstate. Underclocking makes tasks take longer and prevent the cpu from sleeping
Thanks for the advice everyone some good tips there I guess I'll do a bit more reading and try one out! Alex, pinky, Leedroid - ok!

[Q] Most stable and fluid ROM?

My HTC Desire is currently unrooted (I had it rooted once, but it started crashing all the time and the battery drainage was awfull..) but especially the limited capability of installing apps is getting on my nerves.
Since I ain't felling like trying around for weeks, I'd like to hear your opinion on which rom ist the most stable and fluid one.
So, my question is now, which rom is right now the most stable and fast?
From the looks I really liked the MIUI ROM I tried, but I also liked the cyanogen mod one.
Additionally: Is it usefull to change the kernel? If yes, which one and how am I supposed to do it?
-Nascor
Any ROM that is small, and fits into the internal memory.
Obviously if the ROM needs an ext partition it will be much slower.
So basically any AOSP ROM will satisfy you. (CM7, Oxygen, MIUI, dGB etc.)

what do you mean by that, just ROMs which need an ext partition for "themselves" or also ones, which use it for apps?
Also, CM7 and MIUI started crashing pretty occasionally and often after a time...

#1 Yes ROM's which use SD Card to store apps/system files will be always slower no matter what.
#2 Never had issues with either one so cant really help you, when does it happen?

well, but that's the main reason for flashing, on the stock ROM I'm just able to have really few apps installed until the internal memory is full.
The crashes where most times completly random. Sometimes it just rebooted in my pocked, another time it froze on the lockscreen, and then it froze while using it. And after some time I got stock in a bootloop (on both ROMs)

Using sd-ext doesn't mean that you'll get slower rom, as long as you have sd card with higher speed (class 6 or 10). You can try CM 7.2.0.1 from Proz0r's thread (with int2sd support) no difference with stock version trust me.

Yeah, then make a video when you're opening large application.
First with the app on internal memory, and then with the app+dalvik+data on SD and lets see.

So I should probably add: Which A2SD script or whatever should I use? The internal memory for apps is much too less...

Go with OxyZM1.2 or MildWild v4.3, both Oxygen based and very smooth n stable
Sent from my HTC Desire
got OxyZM1.2 right now, I like it so far...just 2 quick questions:
How can I move whole apps to the ext4 partition on my SD card? I'm running pretty low on memory again...just like 30MB left...
I can also backup the login data of the stock email programm, so I don't have to reenter everything every time I install a new ROM, can't I?
by the way, what's the difference from OxyZM to MildWild?
Thanks for the answers till yet!
Hi,
My experience so far is very limited but:
CM7 is bullet proof, but my experience with using the app S2E to expand internal storage was variable.
One the one hand, you can just install anything you like and not worry about space (within reason)
Downside is after a few months use it was laggy as hell. It was taking 5 seconds to open up swiftkey.
Now, I've since tried the following:
BCM, a version of CM9/ICS for Desire. It's ludicrously fast and comes with a very nice built in script for using the sd card second partition as internal space.
It's still laggy, BUT I've now learnt how to align partitions correctly and that my SD card is badly aligned.
I've got the 4EXT recovery so once I've backed it all up I can re-partition the card correctly and see how much that improves things.
BCM's a2sd script (called Mounts2SD) also allows you to disable writing file times, good speed up from that too, I use it on my desktop PC's SSD.
So far though, BCM is chomping my poor battery, even when idle.
BCM benches about 50% faster than CM7 on AnTuTu (3000 vs 2000)
It's noticeably smoother for UI interactions, my one 3D game (Monopoly) it also noticeably smoother (higher frame rate)
So, I've got to now fix the battery drain and repartition the card and then my good old Desire is all good.
There's also something called Supercharger V6 which bodes well, unless all it's tweaks are already in CM7/9/BCM.
J.
not alot between the 2 really. download attached file and put on ur sdcard, boot into recovery and flash it (install from sdcard) this will give ya more space

hes looking for most stable rom lol also antutu scores are pointless and mean jack s*** imho
Benchmark scores mean nothing, just a bunch of useless information that are not right. Usually all roms that I used and had big scores on benchmark apps were running much slower then the ones with lower scores. As you all can see and try roms with swap support get much higher scores but doesn't run nor smoother nor better.

[Q] Cyanogen 7.x stable enough for non-tech user?

Considering installing CM on my wife's Desire because of the not enough space limitation for new apps etc. Will CM work for a non-tech user (my wife is NOT very keen on new tech) in an everyday use situation? Will this solve the "out-of-space-problem"?

If it's non tech user then I would suggest you take a look at Oxygen rom. Less menus to navigate, less mistakes. CM7 can get most non tech lost with all the options available. It can even be overwhelming for casual users in my opinion. :highfive:
I solved out of space issues by partitioning my SD card and installing S2e. On my old Desire running CM7 my free space went from 12Mb to 74Mb!
lol i got 1.1gb internal memory left :what:
fairly easy with cyanogenmod7 and has no effect on speed. from what iv noticed anyway. but like stankyou says cyanogenmod7 has a few settings in the cyanogenmod settings that if u didnt what they did, it could make it unstable, crash etc. like performance, CPU min - max etc

She would never mess with the settings, so I would just like to install the most stable ROM with memory issue sorted out. So, what to choose?
Oxygen with Oxygenr2 hboot
OR
An-droid with Oxygenr2 hboot if she prefers sense UI.
OR
Nikez JB p11 of course. It is going to be recommended anyway so I could be first too.

Not really, though AOSP ROMs will show more RAM available than Sense-based ROMs will. Also, most AOSP roms like CM will let you do things like enable zRAM and some other tweaks that can help with memory management. Also there are hacks out there that will let you set up a swap file on your sdcard, but that will wear out an sdcard pretty quickly. But it's not like the Galaxy Nexus where you can reclaim some memory that is normally reserved for 1080p video recording.
Thank you. I'm running the newer pacman and gapp for this phone. I've seen that its what takes up most the ram on this phone and its lacking in the ram department lol

If you are concerned about maximizing the RAM on this phone, use a Sense 1.0 ROM (Gingerbread) or CM 6.1/7 or as they are lighter on RAM for this device as compared to newer ROMs.
If your goal is to gain more space to hold more applications, you might want to try the Ext4 mod. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1623038
