When i turn on my phone or disconnect from the computer the app icons that are loaded to the sd card take an average of 3-5 minutes to load. Any ideas as to the problem?
The SD card is likely a lot slower than the phone storage. Do you have a 32GB card?

I am running the stock rom but am contemplating going to the Cryogene's rom or someone others. I haven't researched them to much yet. My phone has done everything I have asked it so far.
Well it might be an issue with the stock ROM. Haven't used it myself for a while though, so I can't say
What ROM are you using? I am thinking i should just root the damn thing and be done with it.
Thats a pretty standard problem with stock stuff, i would root it....theres at least 1 kernel that has sdcard speed fixes. The one i use is chad0989's incredikernel...it takes maybe 1 min now

Right now I'm on Uber Sense RC2.0.0.
It's the Desire Z Sense with themes support, and the only issue I've had with it is no HD support in camcorder (800x480 max) and to mount to PC you need to use the included Uberscript app. But, those are VERY minor things, and I love it
And unrevoked couldn't be simpler to use. I strongly recommend rooting.

Hi All,
Bought myself a new Kingston class 4 32gb microsdhc the other day. Love my music and vids, and also find that travelling a bit, downloading the maps through the HTC locations app is useful, so i'm loving the HD roms.
However, tried to load up Cool V4, and Insertcoin last night and really really struggled. Bootloops galore. Eventually got Cool V4 to work after flashing the extra bit to remove apps2sd.
Both roms load up fine with apps2sd if I switch back to the supplied 4gb card.
Also tried Cool V4 with apps2ext, but had similar issues.
So it works, but of course it means i'm hampered by reduced space for apps.
Has anyone else had similar issues and found a way around them?
Sounds like you've not partitioned the card correctly. How did you do it?
I've tried both with amonra 2.0 and with parted. Same result. also tried both 1gb and 2gb ext4. same result. oh, and with and without swap partition. guess what?
I'm sure the card is a genuine one. It formats on windows and the phone and checks with h2testw just fine.
I was thinking of completely starting from scratch again... new s-off, new nand etc, but not sure if it would change anything as it does seem card related.
Other thing could be with it not supporting cards that fast, have heard others saying you NEED class 2 32GB cards but that was on other Android phones
What happens if you try a non-HD ROM?
no problem with a non-HD rom as they don't "require" you to have an extx partition. But then they don't have the locations app which is one of my main reasons for using an HD rom. I don't have/want a data contract, which means all my maps should be preloaded and rerady to go. Equally I don't want to have to pay for things like co-pilot, or route66 when It's there and ready in the HD rom.
I am assuming they use the ext partition as an extension of the onboard memory as they are obviously designed to a phone with a much larger memory.
The strange thing is that I can move some apps to the SD card through the applications settings. But with only 28Mb free, and half the things I need to install not there, and knowing the way my luck is, they will be the type that can't be moved, I'm gonna run out completely pretty soon.
As for the speed, I would assume that as it's being used as a memory extension it would require a fast speed rather than a slow one. But then I guess the desire wasn't designed when fast big cards were in the market, and of course weren't intended to run roms from a different phone.
If you want A2SD+ they do, try a non-HD ROM which uses it
Hmm yeah, good point. Will try that this evening thanks. I suspect it is A2SD+ that is causing the issues rather than the HD part, but that will narrow it down.
Did I read somewhere than A2SD+ requires a class 6 minimum? I thought though that there was no limitation on A2EXT, which also failed.
Will report back later. (would have just been nice to not be the guinea pig on this one )
I have a Class 2 16GB card and A2SD+ is fine - DATA2SD needs at least 6 to work properly, mind
So I've tried to logically go through some stages each time to check if I can get any of the roms that need storage space on the sd card to work.
I've tried 3 roms. One with A2SD+, one with DATA2SD and one with DATA2EXT. only one i didn't try was D2Whatever.
Each time I tried twice. Once using a 1gb partition created by amonra, and once by creating a partition with parted. No swap areas at all. Each time I also used the aligned-ext4 script that's knocking about. With the D2EXT rom, I only used the recommended settings for 2 EXT4 partitions of 268 and 768 (exactly the numbers i don't recall, but it was what was written in the thread as "working").
And yet, I get absolutely no joy each time.
The only way i can seem to get a rom to work that requires extra space is to use the script written for D2SD that removes the A2SD part of the rom, which allows me to load up fine. Obviously though i'm then very low on storage space for apps. This all points at some error that is affected by the SD card to me. However, when this does load up, I can use the standard froyo A2SD to allow moving of some apps to the SD. Again though, it's not very effective and can only be used in certain apps... ones which i seem not to be using so much!
I'm basically at the limit of my knowledge (limited admittedly, but i've flashed roms enough times on the desire and on other phones to kinda know what's up). This thing has me beaten. There's no obvious reason why they don't work. People have used faster cards, people have used slower cards, People have used the sandisk 32gb which is supposedly the same size AND slower.
Can anyone help? Has anyone successfully loaded a rom which uses A2SD, D2SD or D2EXT onto a desire with a kingston 32gb class 4 card? Can they share how they created partitions, and any extra steps the made to get it to work?
I can't take my phone out of action tonight as i'm expecting an important call in the morning, but I will absolutely wipe my desire from nand up tomorrow, and also double check the h2testw scores on my card. If that doesn't work, then i can't see how anything will.
Hey i just thought i'd add my experiences to this thread as it is similar!
I went for iNsertCoin Desire HD Rom Data2ext version. Formattted the memory with gparted as 6113mb FAT32, 1024mb EXT4, 256mb EXT4 and 255mb unpartioned.
Installed rom etc fine, installed a few apps but phone started lagging so i looked in titanium to see the following screenshot. This can't be right so i reformatted and did it all again. But after reinstalling, my apps installed again that i thought i deleted when i formatted memory card and phone (did full wipe, cache, delvik etc etc).
Any ideas?
Hi all,
I am new to flashing custom ROM but am glad that I manage to do it and have LeeDrOid 2.3d installed now. Flashed a custom glass theme and also flashed the fly-in animation and a customized color of notification bar for better viewing, too. Really love it a lot and thanks a lot to the developers!
However, I found that my Desire would lag significantly and also unable to pull down the notification bar during any installations of apps. Don't recall they on my stock ROM.
So, my question is, what is the cause of this, and is there a way to rectify this?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
It is because of the A2SD+. Having that lag too, when installing.
Basically the phone copies the app to the ext partition and it's get laggy (since the SD card is under heavy use). Nothing to worry about.
Could that be the class of my SD Card? It's a terrible Class 2.
So, any A2SD+ ROM would suffer from this issue? Will a better class of SD card be rectified?
you may experience lags if using a2sd+ rom on a class 2 sd card while installing
however it is also ROM related
on old baadnewz dhd roms (like 1.5version) i also had a big lag while installing an app but right now on 1.9 version it is totally gone despite my class 2 sd card
ps. yes - better SD card will improve situation
I had a general question about SD card speed. I used SRF 1.2 for a long time, switched to a Gingerbread ROM a month or two ago, and eventually went back to SRF 1.2 for the stability. During my time using a Gingerbread ROM, though, I noticed that my SD card seemed to be a lot faster. Like, a LOT faster. I haven't done any file copying tests or anything, but for instance when loading a list of apps, on Gingerbread it would only take a few seconds, whereas on Froyo it takes a minute or more.
As far as I know, SRF 1.2 uses EXT4, and so does Gingerbread (I don't remember the exact ROM but I do remember it was based on EH17 and also used EXT4). Anyone know why this might be? Does it have to do with some tweak that was in my EH17 ROM that may not be present in SRF 1.2, or is it Gingerbread itself that is faster?
The filesystem is on the phone not the sd card. Your sd card should be FAT32. Yes Gingerbread has quicker calls to the sd card. And I imagine Ice Cream Sandwhich will be even quicker than that.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Okay, thanks a lot for the explanation! Haha, I feel silly now, I should know the SD card is FAT32.
Contemplating a switch back to Gingerbread now! It's so hard to decide!
There are apps to increase speed of your sd card on the market. Your sd card needs to be capable of reaching those speeds before they work. Class 6 SD cards are usually enough.

Hi Guys,
Sorry for posting here but because of the 10 post rule I can't post in the Runnymede AIO thread.
I have an HTC Desire currently running on Seb's Runnymede AIO newest version(as of now). I have a 16GB SD Card with a 1GB EXT4 partition then the rest are FAT32. Other details are as follows.
System ROM 30/262MB free
Internal 50/154MB free
SD Card (a2sd) 361/978MB free
Note: Details above were derived from Titanium Backup.
Also I didn't install XD2SDX since it says that it is only for CM7 users which I'm not. Also didn't flash any kernels radio or anything in particular just flashed the ROM threads download link for Stock HBOOT users. OC settings says smartassV2 which from what I've read is the default. Playing games on my phone is perfect however it is a little laggy when doing all that usual stuff i.e. messaging, phonebook, settings etc.
It would be really great if there is a way maybe by kernel or safe OC settings that could improve the phones performance.
Thanks so much!
What class is your sd card? Since runneymede is partially installed on the sd card, a slow sd card can be causing this lags. I had a class 2 sd card and had some lags too, now I got a class 6 one and the performance has greatly improved.

Try to use a min value that is one or two steps higher than now (say 384000 or higher). You could try a different governor as well, e.g. lagfree, ondemand.
Try to wipe cache and dalvik, reboot, let the phone to settle fully without touching it, reboot again, and see if it still lags.
And yes definitely use class 6 card.
Hope this helps.

Are there any bad effects if I tried to up the min value by two steps higher in terms of hardware?
@evertorN Yeah...I have a class 2 SD Card. You think this is the problem? If so is there any other way to fix it except to get a new SD Card?
If your SD card is too slow, the only fix is to buy a new one. And here I would also guess this its the case.

I bought an A-DATA class 6 sd card. I could really recommend it. The rom runs significantly faster than on my class 2 Samsung sd card.

Ok thanks guys, I think I'll get a new SD card afterall.
I don't think it will help much. I have given up on sense 3.x. these roms just use too much memory, so the phone inevitably starts lagging...
See my signature for a tip on really fast rom ;-)
Yup, thats my conclusion too. With a new (class 6) SD-card, 3.x roms run faster than before, but it is still far from lag free.
Just using my SD Card delivered with my Desire, runnymede aio works great ( V4.0 Special Edition )
Hi Guys,
You can also check if your partitions are perfectly aligned as well. New version of runnymede let's you choose what to install which is a very nice feature for a gingerbread with htc sense 3.5.

Sorry, but you're wrong. Just flashed Seb's 4.0 with AD2SDX using a 16GB Class10+ Samsung and performance is amazing! Just to give a clue: Quadrant reports 1810 - out of the box, no tuning at all. On a Desire. And the ROM is _really_ smooth, never ever had such a smooth scrolling. Even the stock ROM felt laggy compared to this one.
Just got a major poblem with widgets ... :-(
But apart from that it's the greatest ROM I've ever used. And there have been a few, believe me ... ;-)

Edit: You, of course, should know about alpharev.nl and have flashed CM7 with data++ ... ;-)

My HTC Desire is currently unrooted (I had it rooted once, but it started crashing all the time and the battery drainage was awfull..) but especially the limited capability of installing apps is getting on my nerves.
Since I ain't felling like trying around for weeks, I'd like to hear your opinion on which rom ist the most stable and fluid one.
So, my question is now, which rom is right now the most stable and fast?
From the looks I really liked the MIUI ROM I tried, but I also liked the cyanogen mod one.
Additionally: Is it usefull to change the kernel? If yes, which one and how am I supposed to do it?

Any ROM that is small, and fits into the internal memory.
Obviously if the ROM needs an ext partition it will be much slower.
So basically any AOSP ROM will satisfy you. (CM7, Oxygen, MIUI, dGB etc.)

#2 Never had issues with either one so cant really help you, when does it happen?

well, but that's the main reason for flashing, on the stock ROM I'm just able to have really few apps installed until the internal memory is full.
The crashes where most times completly random. Sometimes it just rebooted in my pocked, another time it froze on the lockscreen, and then it froze while using it. And after some time I got stock in a bootloop (on both ROMs)

Using sd-ext doesn't mean that you'll get slower rom, as long as you have sd card with higher speed (class 6 or 10). You can try CM 7.2.0.1 from Proz0r's thread (with int2sd support) no difference with stock version trust me.

Go with OxyZM1.2 or MildWild v4.3, both Oxygen based and very smooth n stable
Sent from my HTC Desire
got OxyZM1.2 right now, I like it so far...just 2 quick questions:
How can I move whole apps to the ext4 partition on my SD card? I'm running pretty low on memory again...just like 30MB left...
I can also backup the login data of the stock email programm, so I don't have to reenter everything every time I install a new ROM, can't I?
by the way, what's the difference from OxyZM to MildWild?
Thanks for the answers till yet!
Hi,
My experience so far is very limited but:
CM7 is bullet proof, but my experience with using the app S2E to expand internal storage was variable.
One the one hand, you can just install anything you like and not worry about space (within reason)
Downside is after a few months use it was laggy as hell. It was taking 5 seconds to open up swiftkey.
Now, I've since tried the following:
BCM, a version of CM9/ICS for Desire. It's ludicrously fast and comes with a very nice built in script for using the sd card second partition as internal space.
It's still laggy, BUT I've now learnt how to align partitions correctly and that my SD card is badly aligned.
I've got the 4EXT recovery so once I've backed it all up I can re-partition the card correctly and see how much that improves things.
BCM's a2sd script (called Mounts2SD) also allows you to disable writing file times, good speed up from that too, I use it on my desktop PC's SSD.
So far though, BCM is chomping my poor battery, even when idle.
BCM benches about 50% faster than CM7 on AnTuTu (3000 vs 2000)
It's noticeably smoother for UI interactions, my one 3D game (Monopoly) it also noticeably smoother (higher frame rate)
So, I've got to now fix the battery drain and repartition the card and then my good old Desire is all good.
There's also something called Supercharger V6 which bodes well, unless all it's tweaks are already in CM7/9/BCM.
J.
not alot between the 2 really. download attached file and put on ur sdcard, boot into recovery and flash it (install from sdcard) this will give ya more space

hes looking for most stable rom lol also antutu scores are pointless and mean jack s*** imho
Benchmark scores mean nothing, just a bunch of useless information that are not right. Usually all roms that I used and had big scores on benchmark apps were running much slower then the ones with lower scores. As you all can see and try roms with swap support get much higher scores but doesn't run nor smoother nor better.
