ICS Performance - Desire General

Good morning guys.
I'd like to know why the ICS version to HTC Desire is not as responsive as it is to Motorola Defy+, which have the same basic configuration.
Just to compare:
CM9 to Motorola Defy+ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1353003&highlight=ics
CM9 to HTC Desire http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1403113&page=686
Could anyone explain me why?
Thank you.

Before you compare apples from oranges. Can you tell me why Gingerbread is more responsive than ICS on Desire? They are basically running the same hardware.

Well, ICS depend heavily on the GPUish chip, and our old Desire ain't so fast on that department (it was build for Eclair).

[Q] is the defy capable of android 2.3?

Hi All,
Sorry i have a slightly noobish question.
is the moto defy hardware capable of running android 2.3 gingerbread ?
regards
Ani
I have an old HTC Hero that has lower hardware than Defy and it handles GB just fine. Custom made GB that is, as the last update HTC did for Hero was Eclair(2.1). The problem with Defy is the bootloader if Motorola won't upgrade Defy to GB.
Ofcourse it's capable of running 2.3 but it's going to take about a year from now lol because there are still 4-5 months before 2.2 comes out...and btw Optimus one is getting 2.3 (slower then defy) so ofcourse defy can get 2.3
Gingerbread 2.3
Defy is fully capable of running GB. You can easily overclock it upto 1.2 ghz. Has plenty of RAM and space like other high end smartpohones.
And so far the leaked version of Froyo 3.4.2 is fairly snappy, fast and pleasure to use. The biggest problem is that motorola won't make any GB ROM for Defy, so we have to wait for some moded ROMs.
Defy has the potential to 2.3, yes ... but this will probably take us a time.
EDIT: Yes, Motorola is "very close" in this area
Sorry for my english...
The HTC Dream is capable of running Gingerbread and it's not crawling, nuff said.
Any maker who tells you that its phones aren't capable is probably not because of the hardware.
Is there any chance that we could get official 2.3 gingerbread ? I would not like to use any custom ROM's coz' Im bit newbie with android....
^ no Motorola releases new phone and Defy will not get official 2.3
If LG P500 can handle GB, Why not DEFY and Spec wise Defy is far better than P500

We may not get it officially but the leaked Gingerbread firmwares for The Defy+ work perfectly on the original defy(red lens). I'm currently on it as the matter of fact.

Thank you for that! I may try it

I use to have an old HTC TyTn II (aka HTC Kaiser) which has 400mhz and 256 mb RAM (i think) running windows mobile 6.1 officially... it was possible to install CM7 (Android 2.3) ROM on it and it ran quite OK!!! Not much of a lag, i used it as my day to day ROM for some months after finally getting a new phone.
So i guess you can say that the Defy DEFINITELY has the hardware for 2.3 maybe even honeycomb and ice cream sandwich (if a port was ever possible)

if you happen to have the green lense, it works great as well. i am on green lense with the leaked 134 gb supposedly for mb526. easiest way to know is to flash the leaked gb, and if camera doesnt work then you are on green lense. if you are, use the greenbread patch to enable camera (you will lose the live wallpaper function). the best gb so far for me is the leaked 134, very stable with magnificent battery life.
Motorola DEFY has a 1GHz TI 3630 chipset on it. but it will be functional if u install a 2.3 version. i have tried it, it works. because TI(Texas Instruments) doesn't produce a 800MHz 3610 chipset. that chipset doesn't even exist. the DEFY with the stock rom uses a downgraded 1GHz 3630 chipset. DEFY is very powerful... I don't even think of buying a DEFY+
The only problem to defy was the Gingerbread rom itself. But now we have some good gb roms that works very nicelly!

[Q] What will ICS add to our device?

Hi friends,
I wonder what we will get with ICS. I think it will let us to have much more free ram at startup. Maybe smoother than virtuous affinity... So more what? I've read it would be more useful than sense based roms. I really can't wait to have an ICS rom which is really smooth; but i don't know why and for what i wait
Why would it give us more free RAM ? Surely it will be less, e.g. hardware acceleration uses more RAM.

in my opinion, base android roms (no sense) don't use much ram. somebody said we will not need sense with ICS. So it won't use much ram. as i said, these are my opinions... BTW doesn't sense based roms have hardware acceleration? is there any ram usage difference between gingerbread and ICS roms?
ICS is the newest operating system for android, which is definately alot to look forward to (eg. gingerbread made froyo absolete). But you're comparing it to a sense rom, which is a completely different thing. I think the best way for you to learn what you want to know is to google it.
yes but icsi with sense is impossible in G2 because have poor ram for this dual
I have found this page http://chromloop.com/2011/11/ice-cream-sandwich-first-boot-on-motorola-defy-aosp/
It says ics uses about the same ram with gingerbread. So it should be possible to have ics rom with sense. But i don't think that i need it, i only want ics based cyanogen 9. Thus it will be fast i though. Am i wrong?

Well you can play around with the ICS port that's still in the works. You'll get a general idea of new things to come. I can't wait till we have a nice, fully functional rom. Don't think I'd even want anything from sense after that

i've been playing with the ics port rom ever since the alpha version. so far it's the greatest. can't imagine (wait) what it will feel after a stable release
Have they implemented Hardware accelerated UI in the Desire S port?
It seems rather slow.
Of course it's in beta, so it's all cool and I don't expect a port to perform well in the long run either way. But I'm just curious since "3D acceleration" is kinda vague. Is it only for game apps and some fancy effects?
As far as I know hardware acceleration is fully working on the desire s port. I'm pretty sure, that most performance issues are simply due to the fact that it is a beta port of ics from another device.
Once we have a fully working aosp build or cm9, performance should be as good as expected.
I think you can get a good impression of ics without hw acceleration by trying out v 0.1 from andromadus, which redefines slow.
Ah I see. Thanks.

[Q] Desire vs Desire Z?

Hi.
I want to buy cheap used phone for min. 1 year. The phone must be able to support stable ICS/JB ROM or has many custom ROMs. It would be great, if the battery last good. I see that Desire and Desire Z are quite good for my expectations, but there're few diffrences.
Desire Z's CPU has almost same performance as Desire, but uses less power.
Desire Z's GPU is a way better than Desire's (Adreno 200 vs Adreno 205).
Desire has AMOLED which uses more energy.
Which do you prefer for me?
I would go for the DZ.
It's just faster and it has a nice keyboard to.
Battery lifetime will be just the same.
I have both of them, so if you have more questions, don't hesitate to ask!
Desire z for sure
its newer and the hardware keyboard is nice to have tho android versions beyond gingerbread dont support it
however devs are hard at work to bring ICS and Jellybean to the device and many are quite stable
Desire at this point is old, even older then the desire z

[Q] As of 2013, what is the fastest and snappiest ROM for the HTC Desire?

I know, typical question, but I haven't been keeping up with roms much for the past year or so. I have an old rooted HTC Desire and I thought I might as well give it some life. My primary concern is speed as the title suggests, I'm looking for the rom that gives the smoothest and snappiest experience possible, that is, the least amount of lag and highest frame rate that one can possibly squeeze out of the device, don't care what version of android it is and what features does it have, as long as it's crazy fast and stable enough to be a daily driver. What I should I be looking into? Cyanogen? Oxygen? some jelly bean rom?
Flashing a rom, partitioning the sd card, customizing it and install all the esential apps takes time, so I would rather do this once instead of trying a few roms and see what sticks, hence the question. Thanks in advance
I would say CM10 is the fastest out there for your Desire. I may not have an actual Desire but the phone I have, the HTC One V is almost identical specs wise to your desire and CM10 blows any ROM I've seen out of the water. Their Trebuchet launcher works hand in hand with project butter and even with my phone's ageing Adreno 205, it is much smoother than my friend's Galaxy S3 running Jellybean Touch wiz.

Well, HTC one v isn't the desire. Cm10 kind of sucks on the desire in terms of speed.
Any GB based ROM should be running smooth and snappy. My personal favorite is Cool Droid V3.
I am using Nikez JB 4.2.2. in my signature. Does the job fine for me!

Hi,
I used Mildwild 5.0 during more than 1 year, and all was smooth, fast, and stable.
Only problem i had was sometimes loosing data when battery low. (ok after reboot but a bit annoying).
Now testing 4.0.4 from Marius.a, quite satisfying even if it's only in English or Chinese (quite smooth), main functions work (a few bugs sometimes but nothing really bad).
The thing is it's the only 4.x with camera recording working fine, and i need this so...

[Q] Extreme lag on Evervolv-based ROMs

Hey guys,
Just wondering, why do ALL 4.1 and 4.0 Evervolv-based ROMs have massive problems in 3D performance? Scrolling is often not an issue, but window animations and transition animations are horribly laggy. It's reminiscent of the Froyo/GB Sense window animations (the ones that zoom in/out but don't quite finish), except much worse.
Can someone tell me why this is happening? VJ's AOKP 4.2 also suffers, while his CM10.1 4.2 does not. Cyanogenmod007 (4.1.2) suffers but Cyanomod007 (4.2) does not.
What you've got to realise that on HTC Desire, the board carries an Adreno 200 GPU with a stupid 1GHz single core Scorpion CPU, that isn't even close to the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4 or any other devices released with ICS and JB. We are using a 3 year old phone, that was nearing its end, but thanks to VJ, Nikez, CM10 and Evervolv team that we are able to enjoy the ICS and JB flavors on Desire. Those guys are already working hard to make the best possible use of resources on our Desire. Those ROMs are not, I repeat: ARE NOT, for daily use. Its just when you want to have a change of flavor on your weekend. The best and stablest are CM7.2 builds. All the ICS and JB are awesome, but they won't satisfy you. I often suffer from the change of flavors in a week and that's what those guys are devloping for. If you have a good phone, with HTC Desire as a backup one, then you can use those flavors.
Launcher can be an issue. Try Nova or Apex. Did speed up for me considerably.
