Alright, here's my issue..
I'm really wanting to go to either Blu Kuban or Phantom's Blazer rom. Both of them look really amazing and they seem like they'd fit my style.
Now before anyone says, "Go read this, and that". I have read this and that over and over again.
I know the eMMC bug is out there and I don't want to end up with a bricked device from a stupid error. I know that I have to start by getting CWM installed; which is where I'm stuck. The rest sounds almost as easy as booting into recovery and flashing through CWM. But getting to CWM; that's the confusing part.
First, I want to rid myself of the chance of an eMMC brick as I've read there are patched kernels out there with CWM that nip that bug in the bud. But here's my issue. I've read so many posts and watched so many video's and still haven't came up with a positively right answer here.
I'm running sfhub's Odin oneclick for FF18 and it's rooted as of now. Other than that, it's stock basically.
Do I need to odin oneclick back to el29 to get to the blu kuban ff18 build? And if so, how do I go about installing CWM so I can? I've read GB kernels won't boot ICS and vice versa. So if I went to EL29, I'd have to flash to a ICS kernel with CWM? Haven't found out much about that honestly as every post that I've found via that pretty little search box is just ridden with warnings about the eMMC bug.
This is the closest thing I've came to find about installing CWM on FF18, but the thread (near the end pages) are ridden with people having issues getting that to run properly?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
I'm not a novice when it comes to electronics and hardware; just extra precaution is my goal. No brick = good LOL
So what's the best way for a Rooted FF18 install to go to CWM and be able to flash the ICS version of Blu Kuban or Blazer?
Thanks ahead of time as it's annoyed me for over a week now trying to find the right solution.
Just odin or if you have mobile Odin the touch wiz version here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28474639 and you should be good to go.

From ff18 you can just flash agat recovery and flash from that recovery. Recoveries that have been deemed safe won't brick your device. Or you can Odin the el26 kernel with cwm and boot into that recovery and flash from there. The last one was the standard method for flashing when safe recoveries weren't around. You can do this if you want to be extra careful. I got into the habit of flashing the el26 kernel before flashing any ICS ROM because I did it so much that it became "muscle memory".
Edit: in order to minimize the chance for error keep in mind flashing an el26 kernel from an ICS ROM will not allow your phone to boot. However you can still boot in cwm so after Odin finishes flashing the kernel be ready to hold the power button and the volume up key. If you miss your chance, no biggy just battery pull and try again. Try searching for a direct boot cwm kernel v3 I think. It does what the name implies.

Alright, I used the autoroot package from sfhub here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
and chose option D for the ICS kernels and then chose the next option E which installed agat-cwm-src (the one which I've seen is "safe") lol Currently watching my phone do a nandroid backup!
Just to make sure though, it shows AGAT_Recovery tREC_v0.2.1 Does that sound right?

Yes you will be able to safely flash blazer rom with that kernel/recovery. Also when you flash that rom. Flash the kernel right after. To keep the safe recovery.

On a side note, don't use any super wipe zips such as caulkulins format all from an ICS recovery it ignores any safeties that a recovery might have and you might brick. Just use the wipe options from the recovery.

Ok i'm officially on blu kuban and i'm enjoying it fully. Love the dark theme and all the nooks and crannies. Question though.. Since I flashed using agats, do I need to rehash a safe kernel?
And on a side note, if I want to go back to stock I can just use an Odin one click correct?

If you are on the blu kuban you can grab any kernel you want I'd recommend the kuban kernel in the rom updater.. But agats safe kernel is in the rom updater as well... And if you grab the kuban kernel in the rom updater it is safe as well since it is based off agats kernel just with more tweaks and what not

yea good luck with that, on the prevail/admire/replenish/precedent people were getting bricks left and right because of rom manager. in fact the only safe option for them was "reboot to recovery". we have numerous threads about how not to use it all over android forums. myself and a few others came up with a way to fix cwm (because they are all arm6 devices and koush's rfs modules are arm7 and higher only...) and make it official.. he told us no he didnt like it and to come up with a new way to do it. instead now we have to try and figure out a new way of doing it all while more people get bricks.
so, for you to request he pull support on a product that makes him money and sometimes causes bricks, is a VERY unlikely event.

LOLOLOLOLOL you must be a former evo owner?
on the OG Epic rjmjr69 (ACS team leader) sent him an epic for recovery purposes, 4 months later he still had yet to make it or reply about sending it back. he finally got it back after a few more months and we got a 2.5 version "fake flash" which im sure many of you are familiar with (its how he does all of his samsung recoveries) when version 3.x was made by dameon and we broughtin ext4 support again took forever and then we had just ext4 cwm.. from there drockstar spent MONTHS learning cwm and getting dual fs cwm made. in teh 4.x series drockstar was teh champion of cwm whipping out all sorts of versions and improving on many things. after almost a year he finally got cwm official status again to go from 2.5 to 3.0.0.1 now to 5.0.2.0
my point is all the work was always done all he had to do was sync up their repos, from my experience if you want a cwm that works and is updated, do it yourself... dont rely on him. the atrix has been supported since months after it came out, photon just got support 2 months ago despite it being the SAME phone...
Captivate. But I guess the story is different here. He worked with designgears and had a recovery within days. Same story with SGSII.
lucky you guys
Factory restore was the culprit for me. use the format all zip and that seems to be much safer.

I just bricked my Epic Touch on Saturday. I used Rom Manager to back up the phone. The phone now is in the dumpster. I've used Rom Manager on my EVO 4G, and my EVO 3D for a long time and found the app very useful. I've heard others bad mouth ROM Manager, but I never experienced any problems until now. Any how, I strongly suggest everyone STAY AWAY from Rom Manager if they have an Epic Touch.
I have been using Rom Manager on every ICS leak..I am also very safe in that I don't backup anything as well as flashing back to GB before going onto any other ICS build..User error is the issue, not Rom Manager.

I mean I am no pro, but I am sure those devs use every method thinkable when flashing to make sure all methods are compatible. It is inevetible that they will have some bricks. Rom Manager has worked over and over and over for me is all I am saying.
I am not using the touch recovery btw. I flash CWM with Rom Manager and then reboot into recovery with it.
It should also be noted that when I flash CWM using Rom Manager, I do not choose epic 4g touch when it asks what phone I have. I select the bottom option, which I believe is just Galaxy SII

As title says I'm new to this site I have only got Calkulin's E4GT 2 ICS Rom. Looking into getting a blend, I have a White E4GT back on GB EL29. Already rooted obviously. All Roms will be looked at, I'm looking for something like ICS but battery saving and themes and such are applicable.
also
What is the difference in these kernels/modems? Like mine is EL29, and there is EL26 and stuff, when flashing a new rom will it change by itself or do I need to self flash a new kernel, and I had the issue with Calkulins ICS where the yellow triangle appeared, so I followed qbking77's guide on how to fix that, if I were to flash say, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538848 this rom, or so other that needs a new kernel, how would I (if possible) keep my kernel to make sure that yellow triangle stays away?
I'm not sure how to keep the triangle away with ICS but, with gb I've flashed almost every rom, and el29 is the most latest release for the epic touch.
Assuming you know what modems are, each and every modem reacts differently on every phone(I'm pretty sure no one knows why).. So you'll just have to play around with modems to find your best combination,
as far as the kernels go, some roms come with a certain kernel others use the one previously on your phone(I beleive), just read the rom info an it should tell you if it includes a certain rom
Edit: ah sorry.. a modem is the radio in your phone, it's what communicates between the tower and phone for service, wifi and what not
=D Double edit: this might help out to..

Everybody has different likes and needs when it comes to roms. I just flashed the fd24 leak earlier today and so far its very nice. Ths nocturnal venum rom has also caught my eye once they get the rest of the bugs out.

If you are using a GB rom you can restore a GB rom, but if you are on ICS you cannot restore back to any roms. You need to go back to Gb then installing the rom. In order for you to go back to GB you can follow QBking77 video (youtube) on how to root your samsung epic 4g touch. (by re-rooting it brings you back to a fresh GB rom, with no worries of bricking your phone).
I suggest reading here How Not to Brick your E4GT
You can nandroid from an ICS rom back to a GB rom, I did when I was on Calk's ICS rom to get a gps fix.. Although, there is a risk in bricking it, its up to you. Personally I'm on Venom's ICS rom and it is by far the most stable ICS leak I've used, and has great battery life as well.

Just flash the rom after format? Or Flash a new kernel? Cause my current kernel is stock but last time I flashed an ICS rom it gave me the annoy I1900 triangle boot up thing, is that going to be an issue?
Wipe cache, dalvik then format system and then wipe data. If going to ics rom make sure you are on a gb rom with CWM. Or I believe you can flash through odin, but definitely do some research.

Last question on your pic of your about phone, your baseband is FD19, would I need to flash to that before trying that rom? or could I just wipe like you said and flash from EL29?
Read this threads first 4 posts first: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24733831
This ROM is AOKP 32 based and needs EL26 with CWM(found in first post on above thread). As for baseband, that is just the modem and any doesn't need to be flashed unless you want to try a different modem. To do so just Mobile Odin el26 with cwm wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache/dalvick, flash modem of your choice, rewipe cache/dalvick, flash rom, flash gapps and reboot to AOKP Goodness
Rather ask then break something, but running MJJz's blend 1.6 which is currnetly under FE22 but no cwm. I've been out of the flashing world since then (May) so a bit behind on the what/why. I'm looking at my windows VM with Odin which when I start shows
E4GT - FE22 Restore - Rooted. So can I get a 1-2 refresher.
I have the new MJ ROM which contains has the updated FF18, but can't install that (or any other ROM w/o a recovery).
So do I need a newer version of Odin, or do I simply run that, connect, and go? Time is getting more forgiving so I will have time to play a bit more often and keep up.
Tnx
I hope you got your flame suit on cause a flame war is about to begin.

Well since you have asked something in wrong section, let me just answer it..
Use mobile odin to flash EL26 Kernel with CWM and then flash ANY rom you would like from the recovery.
You could use Sfhub's auto root package to flash EL26 kernel with CWM and then flash ANY rom you would like.

Really? Pretty sure I answered this on Facebook for ya.

Get either of the last 2, Odin it and flash the rom update.

Hey, I got nothing else to do while I read up on mobile odin (actually pretty cool) or just go straight odin .. so bring it on >
ok so if I have a problem do I keep it in this comical one or post a new one in the Q&A?
The problem, well since you asked, I used odin 1.85 and the stock el26 with CWM. Flashed, rebooted and the boot screen now has the model along with a nice yellow triangle. The good is that I was I did get into CWM (doing another nand backup) but I have some new ROM's to test, do I simply format and install? I will read up while I await the comical (yet deserved) comments or post in the q&a!
Regardless, you guys are great, so thanks!

Reading up it seems it's a known thing, but everything works fine, so I am reading here;

I was hoping this was moved by now but anyways..
Thats why I posted the 2 methods. Auto root package and mobile odin. They don't trigger that triangle. You can use usb jig or triangle away app to get rid of that ugly triangle.

I just got the Epic 4G Touch from BOOST (White version). Right now I am bone stock, 4.0.4 FI22. I'm looking to ROOT it and run this ROM
([ROM] [TeaM VeNuM] RUJELUS22 The Blu Kuban FI27). Now my question is, since its on Boost, is there any difference in rooting and rom'ing? Will the methods work for mine?
If there are any differences please let me know. I have searched but Im not really finding anything.
Links would be much appreciated.
Thanks! Joe
I have the same problem .. Have you found anything? I was reading the threads and saw an interesting one with a guy named codegerm i believe . He said f122 can be rooted. I tried a pm but never got a reply

I haven't found anything yet I'm debating about trying a one-click-root for the closest build to FI22. BUT, I dont want anything bad to happen. Not being a full tester, I cant just pull a new phone out of pocket to test it. Would be nice though, haha.

Or you can just flash agats kernel. Then from his recovery flash a su zip that contains binaries and the superuser app. Then you will be using stock rooted

You can use agats kernel to get root, once you have root you can flash whatever rom and kernel you want as long as its for the EPIC 4G TOUCH and is compatible with the rom. Im running the BLU KUBAN rom on my BOOST MOBILE EPIC 4G TOUCH. It comes with the KUBAN kernel, and I can confirm 3G,4G work flawless so does GPS and every thing else. hope this helps you
As said before, if my simple to follow guide is followed, you can be rooted in no time without much hassle, even the most novice user can do it.

Ok, I got it rooted, now Im actually trying to get Blu Kuban. What kernal did you use to flash that ROM? I read that you cant use Agats kernal to flash Roms. Ive seen the the GB kernal EL26 is safe. But that confuses me honestly.

It shouldn't matter. In my personal testing and daily usage, Agats is safe for flashing most ICS ROM's, but some say that when it comes to AOSP or AOKP to use the EL26.
If you want to be extra safe use the EL26 CWM kernel.
Ok. So Im on Blu Kuban now. Its going to take some getting use to. But what is THE best ROM for the E4GT? Best battery life, like the #1 option for users of this phone.

I reckon that there is no such thing as a "best ROM". I personally don't like blu kuban as it has the damn blu kuban wording everywhere like if I'm playing blues clues an a lot of menus are dark, making it impossible to see unless highlighted. See how easy it is for others to have different views of ROM's when it comes to picking a best ROM?
I suggest you take a look around for a ROM in your taste. There is lots of ROM's to choice from and in the end only you can decide which works best for you with a mixture of tweaking. OFC lets also remember that certain applications you use may affect your experience with battery life on ROMs.
I was very proficient at flashing custom ROMs onto my old HTC One V, but this past weekend I got a Virgin Mobile Galaxy S2, updated it via the Samsung official downloader to JB 4.2.1 (GB28) immediately. then, I downloaded the Framaroot apk onto my phone via play store and rooted with the Aragon hack. SuperSU is on my phone.
So, I've been reading and reading and READING in order to make SURE that I understand the process involved with customizing my new S2. Here is what I want on my phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2051513 (Paranoid Android) and in the instructions it says that I simply need this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26295021
So, since I currently have GB28 and it is a Virgin Mobile phone, all I need to do is download this?
JB - Virgin Stock/Touch-Wiz Kernels
Available Kernels (ZIP Format): GB28 (Virgin) / FL14 (Virgin)
Available Kernels (TAR.MD5 Format): GB28 (Virgin) / FL14 (Virgin) <---and this one I can install using Mobile Odin, right?
Available Kernels (One-Click Format): GB28 (Virgin) / FL14 (Virgin)
And that will put CWM on my phone and I can then flash PA from recovery as I'm accustomed to? Nothing else? No need to worry about the stock modem?
I really appreciate the help!
No, those are stock kernels. You already have that on your phone. You need to flash a custom kernel. I recommend chris41g's el26. Flash the tar with pc or mobile odin, reboot to recovery, wipe everything, flash rom, ics modem(if needed), reboot, profit.

Yes an ICS modem is needed, that's the only thing I couldn't tell her in the other thread, I don't know what VM uses for the ICS modem.

Any ics modem will work for VM. It's the same principle as the GB27 modem working on my Boost phone. But I think the rom is a ctually FL26, but not sure there's a stand alone modem, which came out at the same time as Sprints FL24. But FL24 modem should work just fine. It works on Boost, no reason it shouldn't work on VM.

You are currently rooted - next step is custom recovery.
Download EL26+CWM tar from the repo (check the stickies)
Download FL24 modem zip, also from the repo
Download the AOSP rom of your choosing (ParanoidAndroid it looks like)
Download whatever gapps you want to use
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mobile Odin -> EL26+CWM.tar.md5
Pull battery when you see the Galaxy S2 logo.
Reboot to recovery by holding Volume Up and Power
Make a nandroid
Wipe Data, Cache, and Dalvik-Cache
Flash FL24 modem zip
Flash ROM
Flash Gapps
Reboot system

So, the Gingerbread kernel (Chris41g's repacked GB EL26+CWM5) is one that works with AOSP ROMs properly? Up to date, there has been no ICS or even JB repacked with CWM or TWRP that works with AOSP ROMs?

ICS repacks have the super brick bug. Generally anything with the word brick in the title is to be avoided.
Jb repacks and source built kernels for touch wiz work great as long as you stay on touch wiz. They sometimes have issues flashing aosp ROMs.
El26+cwm is the only kernel i am aware of that can flash anything, from any setup, with no issues.
Edit: you get a new kernel when flashing the ROM anyways. El26 is only to get you from tw to aosp.
