What is this exactly? Is it a kernel to flash with roms for no more los? Or is it just a stock rom update? And is there an Odin?

It is the kernel, modem and rom. However, you can only use the modem if you are on eg30. It will not work with eg12 or eg31.

EK02 can only be flashed from CWM.. It is a modem update. I am not sure what the roms and kernals are exactly, other than renamed.
I flashed ek02 from CWM about 4 hours ago and have had phenomenal service results. Data is quicker, no LOS of any sort, etc.
If you are not on EG30 right now, then don't bother even trying to flash this as there is no way. You can check your current modem by checking your baseband versions in setting, about phone.

Not exactly. Only the modem can be flashed with CWM. The kernel and the rom can be odin'd. EK02 is the modem, kernel and rom (file system).

I still have EG30, latest sensation. The 31 problem causes hesitation to mess with modem. Should it? What's safe.

EK02 is official as far as it was pushed via OTA. So it is safe to install. I have been running the whole package since early this morning and so far am happy with it.

Only for the modem. You can't go back to EG30. The best you could do is to go back to EG12 or EG31. But so far EK02 is much better than EG30.

Also, sorry, but the development team put a lot of options up. With EG30, what would you recommend; the latest and greatest/stabliss?

WiFi Speeds EG30-EK02
I just flashed my EG30 to EK02
I did a quick WiFi test first. I have attached a before and after.
Not sure if this is 100% the modem update. The phone had been on for 15+ hours and I did a complete cache wipe before the update.
Either way, It was interesting. My computer always gets between 19000kpbs - 30000kpbs but, my phone was never close....Not the case anymore.

is there a difference in 'modem' and 'radio'. i keep reading on this ek02 and some people use the words in the same sentence others use it as if they are to seperate items.
also, i am on eg30. can someone point me to a link that will update the actual modem

They are the same. Look up about 5 posts and you will see a link for the modem in one of my posts.

Mainly the modem but I don't see any negatives over eg30 for the system. It was already super fast and smooth for me so I don't notice much of a difference there except when it comes to modem. use.

[ ROM ] Stock Rooted FC06 System [ ICS / OS 4.0.3 ]

This ROM is completely stock with exception that root/busybox is included and it uses the stock(No CWM) kernel. Also no new modem for this build, so FC05 is the correct modem for this build.
All must be flashed through CWM

Nice, can't wait to try this out. FC05 was great for me with the exception of no GPS. That's the first time i've had an issue with the GPS not working in any ROM for me.

[Q] New around here looking for Roms

As title says I'm new to this site I have only got Calkulin's E4GT 2 ICS Rom. Looking into getting a blend, I have a White E4GT back on GB EL29. Already rooted obviously. All Roms will be looked at, I'm looking for something like ICS but battery saving and themes and such are applicable.

What is the difference in these kernels/modems? Like mine is EL29, and there is EL26 and stuff, when flashing a new rom will it change by itself or do I need to self flash a new kernel, and I had the issue with Calkulins ICS where the yellow triangle appeared, so I followed qbking77's guide on how to fix that, if I were to flash say, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538848 this rom, or so other that needs a new kernel, how would I (if possible) keep my kernel to make sure that yellow triangle stays away?

I'm not sure how to keep the triangle away with ICS but, with gb I've flashed almost every rom, and el29 is the most latest release for the epic touch.
Assuming you know what modems are, each and every modem reacts differently on every phone(I'm pretty sure no one knows why).. So you'll just have to play around with modems to find your best combination,
as far as the kernels go, some roms come with a certain kernel others use the one previously on your phone(I beleive), just read the rom info an it should tell you if it includes a certain rom
Edit: ah sorry.. a modem is the radio in your phone, it's what communicates between the tower and phone for service, wifi and what not

Ah, this is helpful for the second post, thank you. I'm still wondering as to what Roms I should try next, I liked Calkulin's but I'm one for trying everything till I find the one for me. Any suggestions will be nice.

Everybody has different likes and needs when it comes to roms. I just flashed the fd24 leak earlier today and so far its very nice. My main need is stability and the official leaks are the most stable in my opinion. Read a lot and ddcide for yourself. Ths nocturnal venum rom has also caught my eye once they get the rest of the bugs out.

Eh, I found the review, but I mean it looks nice, but I also found Mijjz's blend which looks really nice. How would I install it if I'm running EL29, but it says FD19? Just go into recovery and format all then flash it? Or do I need to odin my phone and flash a FD19?

Honestly, I have not played around with the ICS leaks.. So I couldn't tell you, I do know that if you restore a backup from gb you can mess your phone up pretty bad. No one wants a bricked phone lol.. I might get the "ota" a shot though

I restored a GB backup when I was running Calk's E4GT 2... So, there's no way for me to use this rom? I'm really confused.

You can use an ICS Rom and flash it through cwm but you'll have to use Odin to flash if u wanna go back to a gingerbread rom

So, I can just put it on my sd card run Calk's flash all and flash the rom from CWM? Sorry I'm making this complicated, don't want to risk bricking my phone.

If you are using a GB rom you can restore a GB rom, but if you are on ICS you cannot restore back to any roms. You need to go back to Gb then installing the rom. In order for you to go back to GB you can follow QBking77 video (youtube) on how to root your samsung epic 4g touch. (by re-rooting it brings you back to a fresh GB rom, with no worries of bricking your phone).

I suggest reading here How Not to Brick your E4GT

You can nandroid from an ICS rom back to a GB rom, I did when I was on Calk's ICS rom to get a gps fix.. Although, there is a risk in bricking it, its up to you. Personally I'm on Venom's ICS rom and it is by far the most stable ICS leak I've used, and has great battery life as well.

Just flash the rom after format? Or Flash a new kernel? Cause my current kernel is stock but last time I flashed an ICS rom it gave me the annoy I1900 triangle boot up thing, is that going to be an issue?

Wipe cache,dalvik then format system and then wipe data. If going to ics rom make sure you are on a gb rom with CWM. Or I believe you can flash through odin, but definitely do some research.

Last question on your pic of your about phone, your baseband is FD19, would I need to flash to that before trying that rom? or could I just wipe like you said and flash from EL29?

This ROM is AOKP 32 based and needs EL26 with CWM(found in first post on above thread). As for baseband, that is just the modem and any doesn't need to be flashed unless you want to try a different modem. To do so just Mobile Odin el26 with cwm wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache/dalvick, flash modem of your choice, rewipe cache/dalvick, flash rom, flash gapps and reboot to AOKP Goodness

Need some help with CWM

Alright, here's my issue..
I'm really wanting to go to either Blu Kuban or Phantom's Blazer rom. Both of them look really amazing and they seem like they'd fit my style.
Now before anyone says, "Go read this, and that". I have read this and that over and over again.
I know the eMMC bug is out there and I don't want to end up with a bricked device from a stupid error. I know that I have to start by getting CWM installed; which is where I'm stuck. The rest sounds almost as easy as booting into recovery and flashing through CWM. But getting to CWM; that's the confusing part.
First, I want to rid myself of the chance of an eMMC brick as I've read there are patched kernels out there with CWM that nip that bug in the bud. But here's my issue. I've read so many posts and watched so many video's and still haven't came up with a positively right answer here.
I'm running sfhub's Odin oneclick for FF18 and it's rooted as of now. Other than that, it's stock basically.
Do I need to odin oneclick back to el29 to get to the blu kuban ff18 build? And if so, how do I go about installing CWM so I can? I've read GB kernels won't boot ICS and vice versa. So if I went to EL29, I'd have to flash to a ICS kernel with CWM? Haven't found out much about that honestly as every post that I've found via that pretty little search box is just ridden with warnings about the eMMC bug.
This is the closest thing I've came to find about installing CWM on FF18, but the thread (near the end pages) are ridden with people having issues getting that to run properly?

I'm not a novice when it comes to electronics and hardware; just extra precaution is my goal. No brick = good LOL
So what's the best way for a Rooted FF18 install to go to CWM and be able to flash the ICS version of Blu Kuban or Blazer?

From ff18 you can just flash agat recovery and flash from that recovery. Recoveries that have been deemed safe won't brick your device. Or you can Odin the el26 kernel with cwm and boot into that recovery and flash from there. The last one was the standard method for flashing when safe recoveries weren't around. You can do this if you want to be extra careful. I got into the habit of flashing the el26 kernel before flashing any ICS ROM because I did it so much that it became "muscle memory".
Edit: in order to minimize the chance for error keep in mind flashing an el26 kernel from an ICS ROM will not allow your phone to boot. However you can still boot in cwm so after Odin finishes flashing the kernel be ready to hold the power button and the volume up key. If you miss your chance, no biggy just battery pull and try again. Try searching for a direct boot cwm kernel v3 I think. It does what the name implies.

Alright, I used the autoroot package from sfhub here

and chose option D for the ICS kernels and then chose the next option E which installed agat-cwm-src (the one which I've seen is "safe") lol Currently watching my phone do a nandroid backup!
Just to make sure though, it shows AGAT_Recovery tREC_v0.2.1 Does that sound right?

Just to clarify, i flashed a rooted stock ICE FF18 rom to my phone recently with AGAT recovery v0.2.1, will i be able to flash Blazer rom with this recovery? Sorry if its a basic question im still trying to learn to ropes as well

Yes you will be able to safely flash blazer rom with that kernel/recovery. Also when you flash that rom. Flash the kernel right after. To keep the safe recovery.

On a side note, don't use any super wipe zips such as caulkulins format all from an ICS recovery it ignores any safeties that a recovery might have and you might brick. Just use the wipe options from the recovery.

If you are on the blu kuban you can grab any kernel you want I'd recommend the kuban kernel in the rom updater.. But agats safe kernel is in the rom updater as well... And if you grab the kuban kernel in the rom updater it is safe as well since it is based off agats kernel just with more tweaks and what not

Doesn't matter what you started or flashed from.. When you flash the blu kuban, the kernel is installed by default "out the box".. Which is the first one shown in the screen shot

I didnt mine blu kuban ...but couldn't find settings to display any battery indicator on status bar... or the Clock time for that matter ..anyone know if that is a option on blu kuban
Also when I went to Rom updater after flashing ... I t did nothing but screen stayed blank and went to 1x

I've found all of that in the ROM updater. I suggest reading into the ROM updater problem on the blu kuban post. I've not had any of those problems myself so i'm not sure. I love this ROM so far, and don't plan to change any time soon!

How to get custom recovery?

Hi guys. I know this is probably a stupid question, but I would love to get a recovery on my phone. I'm coming from the evo3d which as super easy to work with. Right more I'm on fk23 I believe it's called through Odin. Really want to try cm10

Get mobile odin and flash the el 26 kernel. Really simple
Before you boot cm 10 don't forget to flash an ics or gb modem first in the same time of flashing the Rom

Best thing to to would be to read the stickies and how tos. And then read them again. Improperly rooting and addding a custom kernel (Recovery is part of the kernel on this phone!) can brick your device!
Not saying this to be a smart ass. Really it's that important; read the stickies, wikis and how tos. And once you've done that you will surely enjoy this phone.
Then read through the ROM OP you wish to put on your phone and read the the following posts - all of them.
You will save a whole lot of frustration and get 99% of your questions answered before you go and ask.
You don't quite say how you got to FK23 and what version - I assume you used PC Odin and via the One-Click Stock Rooted method. If that's the case you can, as the previous poster suggested get Mobile Odin (via playstore - my recommendation to support the dev, or go to the devs post and download the xda only app and kernel part there) and flash the EL26 CWM kernel that way. Or you could even use the One-Click Kernel method rwilco12 has them all here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662295 or the 'Direct boot to safe recovery - CM team has info here http://e4gtcm.blogspot.com/p/cm9-install-guide.html
Either way, and espeically with Cyanogen builds follow the install directions - EXACTLY or you'll be making an expensive paperweight.

Cool, thanks for the quick replies guys! I saw a FK23 packed with AGAT recovery floating somewhere, my question was, if I flash that with Odin, is that firmware compatible with cm10? Or Miuiv4.1? Or any rom for that matter if it doesn't specifically say built on fk23?
And so only the ICS kernel will work on those roms, eventhough they are JB? I thought I read somewhere that modems and kernels werent backwards compatible. Appreciate the quick responses, I'm not a total noob I've flashed and rooted lot of other phones, just got these phones in the mail wednesday though.

DO NOT use the TW kernel repacks on CM builds. That is a brick waiting to happen.
Modems that is another story. JB modems are needed for JB TW builds but some have been able to use older ones, most notebly on the AOSP ROMs.
My best advice stands read through the OP of the ROM you are wishing to use then read through the entire followup posts. The CM team golks suggests EL29 direct boot or EL26 'safe recovery' and then using the kernel supplied by the ROM - CM10 kernel. The Miui also has the same explicit instructions. I'd heed them. But the choice is yours
search is your friend.
