I just got the Epic 4G Touch from BOOST (White version). Right now I am bone stock, 4.0.4 FI22. I'm looking to ROOT it and run this ROM
([ROM] [TeaM VeNuM] RUJELUS22 The Blu Kuban FI27). Now my question is, since its on Boost, is there any difference in rooting and rom'ing? Will the methods work for mine?
If there are any differences please let me know. I have searched but Im not really finding anything.
Links would be much appreciated.
Thanks! Joe
I have the same problem .. Have you found anything? I was reading the threads and saw an interesting one with a guy named codegerm i believe . He said f122 can be rooted. I tried a pm but never got a reply

I haven't found anything yet I'm debating about trying a one-click-root for the closest build to FI22. BUT, I dont want anything bad to happen. Not being a full tester, I cant just pull a new phone out of pocket to test it. Would be nice though, haha.

Or you can just flash agats kernel. Then from his recovery flash a su zip that contains binaries and the superuser app. Then you will be using stock rooted

Links? And I read somewhere that using that Kernal on FI22 has a bug of No 3G.
Go to my link in my signature about rooting ics. I can't link you as I'm away and don't remember the link.

You can use agats kernel to get root, once you have root you can flash whatever rom and kernel you want as long as its for the EPIC 4G TOUCH and is compatible with the rom. Im running the BLU KUBAN rom on my BOOST MOBILE EPIC 4G TOUCH. It comes with the KUBAN kernel, and I can confirm 3G,4G work flawless so does GPS and every thing else. hope this helps you
As said before, if my simple to follow guide is followed, you can be rooted in no time without much hassle, even the most novice user can do it.

Ok, I got it rooted, now Im actually trying to get Blu Kuban. What kernal did you use to flash that ROM? I read that you cant use Agats kernal to flash Roms. Ive seen the the GB kernal EL26 is safe. But that confuses me honestly.

It shouldn't matter. In my personal testing and daily usage, Agats is safe for flashing most ICS ROM's, but some say that when it comes to AOSP or AOKP to use the EL26.
If you want to be extra safe use the EL26 CWM kernel.
Ok. So Im on Blu Kuban now. Its going to take some getting use to. But what is THE best ROM for the E4GT? Best battery life, like the #1 option for users of this phone.

I reckon that there is no such thing as a "best ROM". I personally don't like blu kuban as it has the damn blu kuban wording everywhere like if I'm playing blues clues an a lot of menus are dark, making it impossible to see unless highlighted. See how easy it is for others to have different views of ROM's when it comes to picking a best ROM?
I suggest you take a look around for a ROM in your taste. There is lots of ROM's to choice from and in the end only you can decide which works best for you with a mixture of tweaking. OFC lets also remember that certain applications you use may affect your experience with battery life on ROMs.

The OP said he did not want to use odin and upgrade the modem.
But, I do agree that the latest viper rom is great. Using odin to upgrade the modem is not difficult and the epic is pretty much impossible to brick so I would encourage you to try upgrading your modem to dk28 and going with viper or bonsai. Both are great roms. If you don't like them it is easy to use odin to return to stock.

Oh my bad, I thought the DI18 viper rom was still available but I just checked and it isn't. So then my next opinion is Syndicate or Epic Experience.
If you're looking for a DI18 ROM, OP, just click the link in my signature.
If you want 2.1: Go with ACS rom
If you want 2.2: Go with midNIGHT, bonsai, or viper [in that order]
I was on midNIGHT for the longest and it is fast, stable, everything works! I'm currently on viper. I def like the rom. I find that the battery seems to drain faster than midNIGHT even though i'm getting about 9hrs on viper. Navigation is not working atm, but i'm sure it'll be fixed by the weekend.
That said, being a former hero owner, it may seem confusing and hard at first but its really not difficult at all... just read up and drop a reply, someone will be willing to help!
Hey man I came from a Hero and I felt really intimidated too. I actually thought I bricked my Epic first and then had to learn how to use ODIN. Its actually pretty sweet because as long as you can boot into "download mode" on your phone (the number 1 and power) you can restore back to stock via ODIN. I would suggest you take the time read up on how to use ODIN and flash the dk28 build with the modem. Just be aware that it can mess with GPS.
I finally have a ROM I like "Truley Epic Rebirth" its the only DK28 Rom that has a modified kernel that will give you full adb permissions. Every other Rom only gives you root permission via shell with is annoying if you do any font customizations or custom boot-screens etc...
Bonsai ROM definitely! 4G Sprint hotspot app works, nav, gps, no force closes. I'm running it with ADW on top and it's quite stable.

do as he says! if you don't want to upgrade to dk28 modem then syndicate ROM is def the way to go.. smoothest dkI18 rom out.
Flashing zips is easy with the epic. I say try em all and decide for yourself which one you like best. Load up your sd card and while watching your favorite tv show flash away until you find one you like. I will tell you this though, all of the 2.2 roms are based on the same kernel until we have an official source so there isn't a whole lot of difference. As far as appearance goes you can theme over any rom. Personally I'm running midnight rom with the emotionless beast theme but I change my rom out from time to time, one thing I don't change is my theme. Love the emo beast!
If you want to go to froyo then def. Bonsai. A new version is getting ready to be released and its fast and very stable.

so i just rooted my epic using [MOD][One Click Root]ClockworkMod version 3.1.0.1[RFS & EXT4] this method...
i was just wondering is there only certain roms i can flash with this method or is this universial, coming from the evo and everthing was compatiable.. if this is true i was looking for a rom wiki but can't seem to find one so i am wondering was everyones suggestion for rom would be for this method...
Welcome and yes every ROM is compatible with this root method. Here are some good roms to try:
Simply ASOP (my current fav.)
SFR1.2 (flash rom, then kernel, then journaling on, reboot)
RandomRom (known for best battery life)
Revolt Rom
UrbanLegend
strictly battery life, go with RandomRom. most of the mods are included like hotspot and vibrate/silent. It is using an older version of genocide kernel but you can upgrade if you please..

It's outdated, thats why. Also, there was another thread exactly like this. In that thread there was some talk of baked snack...but the developer moved on to evo 3d. I'd go with Syndicate Rom Frozen or any ERA rom.
Well, exactly what the title says. What do you guys think is the most stable kernel is with the best battery life out right now?
Pulled stock, LoSt kernel or stock with CWM. Go with a Shane or bubby kernel. The LoSt kernel has 2 versions. One has overclock

I had several Los's with Zedomax over clocked kernel. Sofar the stable Lost kernel has been great for me with zero Los. Stock also had zero Los on my phone.
Does the e4gt really need to be over clocked? It sure seems fast enough for me, especially if I turn off all animations. Turning off animation is just habbit I picked up from when I was running Android on the HTC Vogue, just got use to a utilitarian environment.
Well I would like to run loStkernel, but I never once got loStkernel until I did. I've had the phone since release.
Either lost kernel or the stock pulled and stock with cwm.

WHAT?! I LOVE YOU MAN!!! Thanks so much!!!!
So.. is there just not enough interest in keeping a tabUI/hybrid rom current??
When AoKPm5 fell off the dev table, I was a little bummed, then PA was ported, and I felt like there was some promissing hope that we would be able to keep the development cruising along for the tabUI/hybrids..
Well.. maybe its just a matter of having the source for the ICS kernel for the E4GT, but with the "source" already floating around.. I'm thinking that the kernel source wasn't the hybrid answer.. I hope I am wrong here though..
Maybe if we have enough voice to say the hybrid roms are still wanted, the development will continue.. :/

Hey Chris, I've been avoiding TWRP cause I thought it had a more "heavy" process to replace your recovery from TWRP. Is all that is needed to restore back to a backup with agat or cwr recoveries would be to just go back to stock first with a one-click or something? Or is that even needed?
This is the only thing keeping me from testing anything with TWRP.

I just thought I had read before that the only way to not run into issues after using TWRP was to go back to stock and then reinstall rom or backup after getting back to stock first.
If you don't have to do that and just factory reset is done from within FF18 (TWRP, CWR or Agats), then my concerns were mute at this point and I should have no problems going back and forth.
I am assuming that you are saying the latter is correct.
Edit: so if the latter is true, then I can flash kernels with different recoveries and they will overwrite eachother no problem? Does mobile Odin work the same if you have TWRP recovery?
The onther thing is that I didn't realize is that you helped or built TWRP, if that is the case, I would feel very comfortable using it, and I also didnt realize you built an FF18/CWR kernel.. I will have to grab that too..

yes i helped Dees_troy with twrp for this device, and I continue to help work on it, I consider it to be a great recovery...
I include it in my AOKP builds.. it includes safety features implemented and designed by Dees_troy and myself..
Those same safety features have been implemented in CM9 alpha6 and recent nightlies as well, so they are also safe.. which means those CWM versions are safe.
Any recovery made by me, Dees_troy, or TeamEpic since the release of TWRP would be considered safe..

I know some do not like it, but I personally think it looks better smaller, and compact. I do not find it difficult to read as some have described. There are many was to increase font size and still use the compact UI. I don't need to increase however as I like the size it is .. and even though most of the development for that mod has slowed, some roms still have it incorporated to use if desired. I myself have an excellent backup of AoKPm5 with the modded system apps so that everything works perfect.. but its stuck with FF02 as the latest kernel, I haven't tried the latest AoKP kernels with it yet.. maybe m5 will still work with TI, dees_troy & Chris's kernel but I'm not sure..
But anyways, my point is as with most every mod and customization we have for this device, ppl use what they like cause of personal preference and what they like.
You are more that free to not like the tUI mod, but there are still some that like it..

Hey all, long time lurk, first actual post here though. I used to jump rom to rom back when I had the original Droid on VZW, but that was so long ago, at least in terms of Android Development anyhow. So ffwd to today, I've had my E4GT now for perhaps 2 months, and I've already rooted it, flashed a Team Rouge Recovery to it (cause it was the latest I think), and am on a stock GB EL29 Rom, and I think an EL26 Kernel.
Now, I know that things have complicated so much more since the last time I was savy doing all this, so I'm vague and still learning about all the different things that can be switched in and out, here and there. But I've been too caught up with all of the recent ICS issues that were presented with the leaks and the actual release. I've since found a rom that I'm comfortable with, AOKP 7-13 , but I'm not trying to mess anything up despite having done nothing but read for the past month and a half about what to do and not to do. One thing I am absolutely sure about is that I came into this scene at a horrible time lol, things have been changing as I read them!!
Now! With this rom, is it completely nessasary to use this specific recovery, CWM5? And, is this the recovery in question? If not, please point me in the correct direction.
And "the normal route" that is mentioned in the first information post in that AOKP thread, would that be the flashing of an ICS rom from a GB rom to prevent the emmc problem that was happening, even though such this rom has that feature removed (at least if I read it correctly)
I'm not stupid nor am I completely horrible at following directions, but after feeling like getting the run around just by attempting to piece together information from different sources, it would really just put my mind at ease, and stop the headaches lol, if someone whom this wasn't so...new to could provide me an outline to follow, or at least do this, don't do that pointers.
I know this is long, and thanks for reading. I'm just hoping to get back into the scene, I hate being anxious and not know, <-- ie. my current state

Okay, first of all, AOKP already comes with a recovery (TWRP). However, if you would rather use clockworkmod then you can use this: http://tinyurl.com/7ysnylg Also, in any case where you want to flash a different ICS ROM, I suggest you use el26 CWM.
I'm aware of the TWRP that is included with the AOKP rom (listen to me, slinging around slang like a pro, lol) I only felt I needed to use CWM5 because it specified it in the instal instructions for the rom.
I would assume that I would need the CWM just for switching ICS's in the future, if that does turn out to be what I'll be doing, seeing as how ICS looks like it'll be nothing but improvements from here on oot.

Ooooh I get you! yes its best and suggested to flash any new ics rom from el29 stockrooted
Odin el29 stock rooted
Then flash el26 cwm kernel
Reboot to recovery then flash the ics rom
If your already on an ics rom MY method is to always Odin el29 stockrooted
AOKP M6 "Friday The 13th Edition"
also if I helped you in anyway, Lets have some manners and hit the thanks!
Righteo, that helps some. Now I just gotta back everything up. I made my original backup once I first rooted, I shouldn't need to make additional, right? You can find rooted, stock GB roms to go back to...right? Lol its late...I need another doobie :cyclops:

Actually, I'm already halfway through that. I am at el29, stock rooted. And I have the el26 kernel. I just need the CWM recovery, then the actual piece de resistance, the rom. Right Krazy?

I was actually in a similar situation as you. I came from flashing on the HTC Hero(which is running AOKP at the moment, and I'm soon going to flash the new Jellybean rom that was just released for it), and that phone is completely different from the E4GT. Although i didn't start flashing from GB, I started on ICS.
I actually went from FF18 Stock Rooted to AOKP milestone 6 Friday the 13th using Agat's recovery from source, and it's a safe recovery, without problems. I am now loving AOKP

What about the yellow triangle thing I have been reading about. What causes this and how do you prevent it? Its kind of confusing to me.

The yellow triangle is Samsung way of telling the techs an unofficial kernel was flashed to the phone. People use a jig or if your on ICS you can use triangle away to reset the binary counter.

Thanks. I am looking to flash for the first time on this phone also, just got it a week ago. I came from the Vibrant which was so much more simple. Another question if you don't mind. I am on the now running stock OTA ICS. Do I just need to Odin a safe kernel then flash which ever ROM I choose or are the ICS kernels that are built from source now safe to flash from?
The kernels built from the source are safe. Agats kernel with recovery. You can flash that kernel being on stock FF18 and flash from there.
Edit: the agats kernel I have is for TW roms. So just do some research on what kernels you can use. (Cm9 and AOKP use different kernels.)

I have done a ton reading, just stuck in the old ways of my old phone and simplicity of flashing on it. It was all a little confusing because even some of the updated ROM threads still say flash back to EL26 first, which is also a TW kernel isn't it? But then I read in another place it is safe to use Agats kernel built from source and so on. I was a little shocked at considerably less custom ROM options on this phone compared to the Vibrant. Granted the Vibrant has been around longer, but there were so many more options at the start which kind of leads me to think it is just that much more work to do that on this phone. By no means is this a negative remark toward any developer, just sort of expected a lot more because it is a nice phone. I was looking to flash the Platinum version of this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1712362 since I love the color red. But, thanks for help. I really appreciate it when someone actually gives an answer to a question instead of bash people new to a phone.

And if I remember right, doesn't it only trigger if you flash an unofficial kernel through desktop Odin only? I know the Auto Root Package won't trigger it, and neither will Mobile Odin.

Your correct only desktop triggers the yellow triangle.
Also just my steps to flashing roms 4 the e4gt
1. odin stock el29 rooted
2. flash the el26 cwm kernel (I provided on a few post back)
3. boot into recovery!
Flash what ever you want!
If you want to flash something else repeat those step! As you venture on you will get the hang of things! I hope!

I can vouch for AOKP M6. I have had two problems, both have fixed themselves(with time for the rom to settle in). Haven't tried Paranoid Android or CM9 yet. And I don't plan on it, as AOKP has everything I want in a rom.

I had all these on the Vibrant, but non are as stable as they were on the vibrant (as least by what I have read). AOKP would probably be my first choice because I am very familiar with Romanbb's work since he had a Vibrant at one time and is one of the best dev's.

Paranoid is a great ROM but some things are just a little to small for my tastes. But if I had a Galaxy Note then Paranoid would be the one for sure. But still my question wasn't answered, not getting smart, just looking for an answer...Do I need to flash back to EL26 or 29 before flashing an ICS ROM, or can I use the new safe kernels built from source? I think I need to be held by the hand on my first one.

You should be good from one of the safe kernels from source. I used Agat's recovery from source to flash AOKP from stock FF18 with no problems, did the normal factory reset instead of one of those format all zips. Not a problem with it. It should be safe to do as many factory resets/data wipes as you want from what I understand.

The agats kernel is safe. Flashed two ICS roms already. If you like red, check out the hooligan rom by MaNuFaN721. Themed red.
