how to disable updates? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Is it possible to disable OTA updates? I'm routed and don't wasn't to update to the newest OTA but my phone I'd pestering me and I don't know if the update will install without me telling it to. I know roms don't have to deal with updates so can I do something to disable the OTA?

I think you gotta freeze fota.client.apk and fwupgrade with TiBu...someone else maybe able to confirm..

Freeze or remove all three of the apk packages that start with wssync, as well as the FWUpgrade.apk in /system/app. To safely remove and back them up, just rename the .apk extensions to .bak
Then, if you want updates at a later time, you just rename the extensions to .apk
If an update has already downloaded, and your phone was prompting you to install it, you can remove the update file from /cache/fota. The update file has a .cfg file extension. By the way, if you ever want to pull the update off your phone for other purposes, pull it to your PC and replace the .cfg file extension with .zip. You then have a zip file from which to extract the latest update.

Thanks. Worked great. I'll update when a real update happens.

Help needed - missing ODEX files on UK T-mobile HTC Desire

All,
I am trying to update my rooted phone with the latest OTA patch from T-Mobile. The patch checks for some ODEX files and fails because I have removed them. I have tried copying in a "dummy" file with the required name, but the update looks to be using checksums so still fails.
Does anyone have the following they can email to me, so I can complete the update? I need:
Mobilbox_Pro_1.5.2.odex
Mediencenter_aligned_1135.odex
SIE_Bravo_TMI_Navigon.odex

rooted phones with custom recoverys cant flash ota updates anyway.....
Ah, but I can as I have the file downloaded and there is a workaround (maybe posted here on XDA) whereby you rename the downloaded OTA file (in /sdcard/download) to update.zip and move it to the root directory of the card.
I agree before that it would not run. But now the update does start to run. It just barfs when it gets to the missing files.
Any copies of the ODEX files will help me.

get hold of the ruu or the ota for your network and remove the .odex files from /system/app/
Can I extract the ODEX files from the RUU then. I need to have them on my phone's /system/app folder. The OTA does not have them as it is removing these files not installing.

yeah you need to extract the rom.zip from the ruu, unzip it and it will be in /system/app/
I think you may be screwed as there is no RUU file yet available, as far as I have been able to detect, for the Froyo T-Mobile UK distribution. All I have see are OTA updates from 2.1 to 2.2 and then the 2.2 update that "removed" the German applications.
Z.
I have seen a RUU titled:
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_TMO_AT_2.12.112.1_Radio_32.46.00.32U_5.10.05.17_2_release_143754_signed.exe
Could this be the one?
Or this one?
RUU_Bravo_TMO_UK_1.15.110.11_Radio_32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11_release_122755.exe
My phone is rooted using the Unrevoked method, with ClockworkMod Recovery. Will running the RUU confict with this?
I'm OK if it just means the phone goes back to unrooted. I can then start with 2.1 and do the OTA updates to get back to 2.2, then 2.2 without German apps, then re-root phone.
Or I guess I could use a stock 2.2 HTC Sense RUU and unbrand the phone?
Thanks for all the replies!
Debranded in the end...
All - thanks for the help. In the end I made a gold card, and RUUed the latest stock HTC Sense ROM which obviously also debranded the phone. So can keep current with HTC and now not worry about T-Mobile updates!

OTA Update Problems Rooted Nexus

I've now had two OTA update notifications but both have failed.
The update downloads and then when the phone restarts it shows the robot with a red triangle, I have to pull the battery and once the phone restarts the update hasn't been applied.
Is this because I'm rooted or is there something else going wrong?

Do you have the stock recovery installed? If not, that is what is causing the problem. Have a read of this thread for more info.
Yeah that must be it. I've tried using the method in the post but I get an assert error. I think it's because I've updated system apps. Am I right in thinking I need to modify the build.prop in the update?

No. You need to replace the files you updated with the stock ones.
Ah. Okay. Can you point me in the direction of the best way to do that? Or is it just a case of finding all the apks and replacing the updated ones

What build version are you currently on, and how many files are you looking for? If it's not too many, I'll extract them for you.

Currently I'm on ICL53F. The one that stops the update is Books but then there could be more... Would disabling CWM be an option as I've just got an OTA notification.

No, that wouldn't be an option. The update will still fail. For any update to work, all the original files need to be present in /system. You will have to do this in an iterative process. Replace one file, try the update again, replace the next file giving you an error, try the update again, ...
It may be easier to just flash a fresh full image. (You may even be able to keep your data if you do not flash the userdata.img file -- only flash the boot.img and the system.img files from the IMM76I factory image.
I've attached the BooksTablet .apk and .odex files for you.
Lesson to be learned: back up the stock files to your computer if you plan on changing them.

System update downloaded, where is the file located?

I'm on a rooted stock rom, with unlocked bootloader. Somehow, a notification came up for the 4.4 upgrade, saying System Update Downloaded, click to install. I don't want to upgrade just yet, anyone know where the update file is located so I can delete it?

Can stock recovery reflash ota?

When you get and accept the ota update it downloads into your storage, would it be possible to use the stock recovery to find it and reinstall?

Can't you pull the recovery.img out?

Sorry but I don't pull anything.
I just download.

I've posted the G925T's OF6 stock recovery over in the OP of this thread. Is that what you're looking for?

Was wondering if I find ota download that I accepted when I updated, can I use that downloaded ota file and use stock recovery to reinstall update.
When you accept ota a file is download into your storage (don't know where ) just wanted to find and reflash.
After ota phone went from great to awesome, but decided to play with smartswitch and reinstall / restore after back up, but after restore I lost the ability to disable tmobile my account app.
After ota I had the ability to disable, after smartswitch no option to disable? ???
Pp. Thanks for input.
Still no answer to my question. ???

Sorry, I must have accidentally marked this as "Read" or something.
To answer the first question: no. Even if you found the OTA update.zip, it's useless once you are already updated. The update.zip files only contain patches for files, and patches for whole partitions. The first thing it does is check to see what version you currently have, and if it doesn't match what it's expecting, it will abort. Past that, even if you fool it somehow, it verifies every single file that it is going to patch. If it finds something it is not expecting, it will abort.
As for disabling the T-Mobile app, I don't really know. I think on 5.0.2 I disabled it, but then I rooted right away and started freezing all the bloat soon after. On 5.1.1 leak, I think I still had that disabled. By the time OF6 came around, I believe it was still disabled. Don't know for sure now, because I'm rooted again and have all this stuff frozen with TiBu.

OTA

Running lolli 5.0.2 on my 8.4 Tab S. I'm rooted with CF Auto with TWRP recovery. Can someone please tell me what this OTA they're trying to push on me will take me to. I'm guessing I'll probably lose root if I go ahead and let install. If I do , can I just reroot with CF combined with TWRP again? I remember that there's a way to disable this OTA by deleting or editing a file or two and I'm searching for that. Appreciate any feedback.

The OTA file is found in your /cache directory so obviously you need to use a file manager with RW privileges to / or the one in TWRP to delete the OTA file. Before deleting uncheck Settings - About - Software - Updates - Auto update. As you have likely altered the contents of your /system partition the OTA may fail to apply as it does a detailed check of that partitions contents before it applies changes.
Once you are rooted and OTAs fail then you can use Flashfire to selectively update the boot and system images from the latest firmware for your device but any changes to /system will need to be reapplied. Flashfire will re-root your device during the upgrade. By being selective in which images from the firmware you apply you preserve recovery and userdata.

The ota.zip was in my fota folder. Deleted it and unchecked auto update like you said. I'm gonna leave it like this as some of that other stuff mentioned is a little over my head. Will check out flashfire but unsure which version to look at as they have a couple of betas. Thanks for your help.

Right now Flashfire is in beta so the Dev (Chainfire) includes software which forces you to always use the current version. That helps him with support, so you need to use the latest version of flashfire the previous versions have expired. Join Chainfire's Google+ group for Flashfire for links and news. You should also read what Flashfire does by following its XDA thread.

You could have flashed that OTA with FLASHFIRE and kept root.

Still may get a chance to do that. Even though I deleted update.zip from my data/fota folder and unchecked auto update in settings, there's the annoying reminder when I turn back on that update has been downloaded and is ready to be installed. Except now there is no update.zip or I can't find it. Did a search with root explorer and turned up nothing. Tempted to go ahead and touch install and see what happens. It may abort because there is no update file now but if there is I would much rather take your advice and flash it with flashfire if I can find it. Would be happy just to get rid of the pop up.
